breeze, swinging around the next couple of hours and the northwest breeze will keep us cooler and keep us dry and eventually help us introduce a much bigger storm system which will be here early next week and that's what i'll talk about with the insta-weather plus forecast coming up in a few minutes. >> our big story this morning, a loss, no ground lost for the baltimore orioles. >> a tough stretch for the birds right now. the birds dropped their first game in the west coast to the oakland a's, the a.l. wild card leading athletics beat the o's 3-2 last night to prevent them from moving into sole possession in the a.l. east. jonny gomes hit a go-ahead r.b.i. single in the fifth to back a's rookie tommy mill own in a key series between playoff contenders. the new york yankees lost 6-4 at home to tampa bay. oakland is part of the o's grueling nine-game road trip that may have some fans going through withdrawal. the o's winning ways have been drawing bigger crowds to the yards which back in town until monday the 24th for a double-header against the blue jays. >> alarming data about the west nile virus. >> creatures are still causing a big health risk across maryland. this year, the mosquito-borne west nile virus has killed two people. a total of 25 have been infected, half with the more severe strain of the virus. more and more people are finding out they've tested positive when they try to donate blood. when you donate blood, it goes to a lab and tested for diseases like hiv, syphilis and west nile virus. >> it's removed from the blood supply so the blood supply is considered protected. >> in 2010, the c.d.c. reported there were no such cases amongst blood donors in maryland. in 2011, three would-be donors tested positive and in 2012, that number has jumped to 10. nationally in 2012, 385 would-be donors had a positive west nile test, nearly triple the number from 2011. these numbers are not included in the total number of confirmed cases. >> just because someone may have a positive test result, that doesn't make them a case. they need clinical symptoms to meet the criteria. >> it's unclear how many of those 10 blood donor cases so far this year in maryland will end up being confirmed infections. all of these would-be blood donors had no symptoms of the west nile virus and that's the case for about 80% of those with the virus. george lettis, wbal-tv 11 news. >> one person is in the hospital after a fire in southwest baltimore. firefighters responded to a home in the 1900 block of bright worth avenue around 9:00 p.m. firefighters discovered flames coming from first floor of a two-story house. firefighters located one victim who was transported to the hospital with possible smoke inhalation. crews say it took half an hour to bring the fire under control. a suspect is on the loose after a stabbing at a light rail station in south baltimore. it happened around 6:30 last night at the westfort station. when a victim refused to give up a cell phone, the fight transferred to the platform the victim was stabbed. >> a break in a case of an elderly couple found murdered in baltimore county. this morning, investigators call the couple's grandson a suspect in the case. >> long-time resident vaughan and margorie pepper had lived in their neighborhood for 47 years. police believe they were killed two days before they were discovered murdered in their home on monday and they think they found one big piece of the puzzle in their investigation. >> we have located matthew long, the 31-year-old grandson of vaughan and margorie pepper. >> matthew long, the couple's live-in grandson, now suspect in their murder, was discovered in oklahoma where police say he's a hospital being treated for a medical condition. baltimore county investigators are also in oklahoma waiting for a chance to interview him. they explained that investigators there contacted them. >> we entered mr. long into the national missing person's damien database. when he was located in oklahoma, they notified the baltimore county police department. >> long was living in the home but was missing when investigators discovered the pepper's bodies. police have described their injuries as traumatic but are not saying how they died or if there are others of interest in the case. >> our detectives have been investigating the case since monday evening. we have conducted a number of interviews, gathered physical evidence and are attempting to put together a timeline of what happened and when. >> the search continues for the man who opened fire on the campus of morgan state university. investigators say the 19-year-old victim was involving his cousin who plays football at the school when he was shot in the stomach on wednesday. police say he was targeted and this morning he's in critical condition. authorities say neither the shooter nor victim are morgan victims. >> security on the forefront of baltimore county school employees after two major gun incidents since the school year began. officials met friday to preview security measures now in place. tim tooten has more. >> the district watch safety meetings were in response to gun incidents both at perry hall high school and stemmer's run middle school. principals were ordered to review school crisis plans already on the books. the school system's communications director says there's a reason why the superintendent is calling for a review. >> we want to make sure people are really paying attention, that teachers are comfortable with their crisis plans in their classrooms and more importantly, the students are included so they know what to do in the event of an incident. >> the district is reviewing how serious incidents are reported and plans to move ahead with the search of for a safety and security director. baltimore county school officials say they'll make sure they do more to report suspicious activity, using a tip line already in place. >> we learned we weren't publicizing it to students and staff as much as we should have been so we will do that with posters in schools as a reminder, if you see something, share it. >> in addition to the tip line, the district is trying to develop a text messaging and email system for staff and students. they're also calling on parents to be more aware and involved in the lives of their children. >> we are askinghe parents to do the same thing, if you see something, if you do something, particularly with your own child, if they seem quiet, out of character, take note, have a
