B.l. News Radio 1098 f.m. 101.5 in the. Mobile way something interesting happened on Saturday that it wasn't it wasn't new necessarily I think everyone kind of saw the writing on the wall the announcement by former Mayor Sheila Dixon that she was going to be seeking her old office again and she had a campaign announcement in normal thing a lot of people are supporters around her people with their signs behind her and she was making her plea for her case for being made mayor again being voted mayor again now like I said this isn't necessarily unexpected I think a lot of people there been rumors and rumblings and Facebook posts and I want to be honest with you know when I 1st heard this I kept my I just rolled my eyes like you're serious you're not serious are you and then of course there was you know some of that she was going to be officially announcing and you remember that scene in Troy when Brad Pitt's character is challenged by the biggest guy on the field and he just he just killed him it's done in one hit. Wonder. Is there no one else when she made the announcement that well I could think . Of really people given the history of Baltimore city given the corruption scandals even the last 2 mayors not even this one but starting off with this particular Mayor Sheila Dixon and the level of corruption that we have seen and by the way it seems it's not even. Just the mayor's office is right it is the commissioners one it felt like we couldn't get a commissioner in without there being some sort of federal indictment involved or some issue with taxes and then never mind that but then there's the City Council issues there's all sorts of political issues and all sorts of corruption and you're just thinking Ari we need to make a clean start we need to start over fresh when I talked about this the 1st time I told you about a girl friend of mine from college and she is absolutely gorgeous one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen in my entire life and she had this amazing ability to pick the worst guy in the room I mean just like does he have a criminal record cause if he does that's probably who she's going to go for it was almost incredible her ability to do this so I'll never forget we were in college and we had an intervention we were also in the kitchen table and we were like Allison need to come sit down because this is gotten out of control you are no longer allowed to choose your boyfriends we're going to do it for you you don't understand how to do this and I feel like Baltimore we had to do something very similar you know you have chosen the same politicians in many cases year after year election after election and what have you gotten for it. A lot in that it's been ridiculous corruption scandal indictment I mean for heaven's sakes you wonder why the trash doesn't get picked up on time when you've got political officials who are being indicted left and right haven't sake stop and then we've got an election coming around the corner and say these candidates coming up and your god these ideas and all these different faces some old some new faces some who are new although they've been in the background for the last 20 years so I don't know if they're necessarily call that new and then you have former Mayor Sheila Dixon and my initial thought. For heaven's sakes Baltimore City is there no one else. But then but then I listen to her speech on Saturday you know to be fair right you can't just assume things and so like I can I listen to the speech that she made and I'll be danged if I didn't stop I'm not saying that I would vote for her and of course I don't live in the city so it's irrelevant anyways but I'm not saying that I would vote for her but listening to her speech gave me pause I'm sorry for the mistakes I made. My turn to and that is the cause to leave office there were 3 times as. For your. To be the next leader. So she started off saying I'm sorry and if I could just be human for a moment I appreciate that I'm not saying that I would go for you but how many times have we seen especially elected officials but just people in the in the limelight people in the spotlight they get caught doing something and they tell you everything except I'm sorry it's more like I'm sorry I got caught I'm sorry that I hurt your feelings because I got caught in this case just a flat out I'm sorry for what I did thank you thank you for acknowledging that that was actually a pretty big black eye on the city and thank you for acknowledging that you know you will have to work much harder than any other candidate because of what you did to yourself and to the city so at least off with that somebody who can stand up and say I'm sorry. I'll listen to the rest your speech is the cause and it's illegal. To greet each day with the sense of urgency holding much so there's an. Impressive forward for their actions. Well good Ok good you said least she's recognizing that what she did was pretty bad. It was a solid black eye for the city and especially at a time right now when what we need is a clean slate out of revisiting that is the best idea but at least she's acknowledging which again is so much more than I can say for a lot of so-called leaders who get caught and the very last thing they tell you is I'm sorry and even then it's usually like I'm sorry I have to resign Ok but are you sorry for what you actually did that's a big step it's a big step one there was more. Me it was just absolutely all right. Well see Dang it now this is where I got a little bit. I felt like I needed to look myself in the mirror here you all know I'm a huge fan of redemption stories I'm just a huge fan of underdog stories rocky one of my favorite movies Braveheart. All of those Crotty kid all my favorite movies I love the movies or the stories of underdogs of redemption. And then there was the fact that we talked about Michael Vick last week which we're not going to get into detail but I will tell you listening to her speech I felt like there are certain times when especially being on the radio you talk about topics that seem to have a connection in this sense it's redemption certainly not the details of what each person did Sheila Dixon and Michael Vick I'm certainly not please please if you listen to nothing else understand I am not comparing their actions Sheila Dixon and Michael Vick I'm certainly not comparing their actions but what I am looking at is the fact that I sat here on Thursday and talked about redemption and now here is a candidate who is talking about redemption and how could I on the one hand advocate for a person being able to. Redeem themselves from the horrific act event as Michael Vick and then on the other hand say I won't even listen to a person who has been indicted or who was charged or who had to resign from office because of what she did and the truth is no I'm not going to do that I will listen to both and I do believe that people can be redeemed Now here is the difference and here's what I think is an important topic. The problem or I guess the difference is that with Michael Vick It is a personal issue he can redeem himself personally perhaps he can reenter society perhaps because it doesn't affect anyone else but him in this case it's a little bit different because not only are you asking to be redeemed but you're asking to be in leadership again to be the leader of Baltimore City and you might say well wait a 2nd you know on Michael bit it isn't a leadership position he's going to be a coach was an honorary captain at the Pro Bowl ask yourself what that does other than being named an honorary captain do you make the decisions does he make any policy does he have any influence and honestly if we can just backtrack for a 2nd I am convinced of the only reason that the that they named him and are a captain of the Pro Bowl is so that somebody would finally start talking about the Pro Bowl who in the heck has cared about the Pro Bowl in the last couple of years and the last decade or so nobody and maybe this is just a way to generate discussion and look here we are doing it for the listen to the c 4 show on demand 24 hours a day at w.b. . Want to 1.5. P. a Rewind continues here is here with Seymour on the news radio 1090 f.m. 101.5 and the. Mobile App I absolutely believe that Sheila Dixon can be redeemed I believe that she can be forgiven I believe that she can make a new name for herself but this is not about her this is about what Baltimore needs and I believe what Baltimore needs at this time is somebody who is saying a whole lot of the things that former Mayor Sheila Dixon is saying but is there no one else is there no one else who can say those things or who can accomplish those things or even more things with out the blemishes that come with it because if you have to work 3 times harder not for the city of Baltimore but just just because. It's you just because of what you have done in the past and that means that the city is already starting off in the negative and folks already so far back that's not I don't think that's what we need so I just want to be clear on how those 2 I think are different but as I was saying she did bring up some things that I think are very needed there are things that we need to hear for example in dealing with the trash Scott Pressler as I had him on my show on Friday and you remember Scott presser come to Baltimore is now his 4th time coming to clean up the city and by God if he does not come back and clean up tons of trash for all those people who turned around and said Baltimore City Oh there's trash What are you talking about when she has got in the folks that are with them in the tons of trash that they have what miraculously found beyond his people the city needs help and here she is talking about the trash but we also have to educate our communities as they are to be a part of the process when you know that May God knows they will that when these Bagwell that chick fil a hey I want to live in a no plays out of the farm you are contributing to a dirty street environment and it doesn't matter where you live you can live in the poorest communities doesn't mean you have to be dirty or. Are we allowed to say that because that kind of thinking this is what gave me pause as I said I criticized Mayor Dixon before I criticized the fact that she's going to be running for office again but because I do believe that people individually can be redeemed that doesn't mean we necessarily put them in leadership positions or to run a city. But I'm going to give you a shot I'm to listen to you and what I heard there was somebody who was willing to call balls and strikes you know my biggest problem with these whole these banned these plastic bag taxes are these plastic bags bans is that it does not get to the root of the problem call me an environmentalist or whatever you whatever but I do believe that we need to protect the environment I am a whole hearted believer in protecting the environment and being responsible with what we have if you are a plastic bag and you come to my house you are going to be reused at least one more time to find your before you find yourself going into recycling or the trash which is more likely the case because I use them for doggy bags. I believe that we need to protect the environment but these plastic bags bans in taxes don't do it you know why because they don't get to the root of the problem why do you see plastic bags in trees in parks or in waterways or in rivers or on the side of the road I just got there themselves you know it's because people put them there because people have bad habits and they throw garbage out of their window and if you don't address that let me tell you a little plastic bag ban is not going to fix that and you might think Oh well of course it will because if they don't have plastic bags and they won't put them in the trees or in the parks you know what people who have those bad habits will find other trash to put in trees or in waterways and what are you going to do you just outlaw all trash you know ban all trash you see why your little proposal does not exist solution and here you have a very flawed candidate coming out and saying to folks in her. In her introductory speech in her campaign speech basically saying you're going to pick up the trash if you are throwing trash out of the window you are part of the problem thank you thank you 1st saying that thank you for having the common sense approach to say yes we need to be. Careful but folks you are such as can't be throwing trash out of the window so I kept listening more to her speech to schools construction infrastructure is great we need to know what's good in a new building when you have only expectations how can we play a new school and that includes health suites or health care programs in these schools. Be honest when I heard that I was like oh really. Old ideas Ok let's hear what you have to say because the health thing I'm quite interested in how this will work out for schools but here is the money throwing money at a problem as the normal response it's time to create an amazing opportunity. I'm sorry what are Democrats allowed to say that I'm just curious because she is running as a Democrat the rowing money at a problem has been the solution but she's saying that may not be the whole story. As a former school teacher I know many of our heroes call teachers know very well education is more than bring some order it's more than reactionary policies and school policy from school policing education is that the poor is the ability and the ability to inspire our children to the level that they look beyond their personal circumstances in condition to believe in themselves. Man I agree with that you know how exactly do you feel like we need to do that now I understand what she's saying here because the 1st time when I when I listen as I listen to it pretty intently and one of the 1st phrases that jumped out at me was reactionary because that to me says that she understands the problem when everything that we do is simply geared towards reacting to what is happening in our schools and that means we're always playing catch up you're always on the defense if y
