- i'm tom mcdowell, president of concorso italiano. i have been a car guy since i was very young. my cousin brought a alfa romeo to my father and i had never heard of what alfa romeo. i knew ford, i knew chevy and i knew this thing called porsche, but alfa romeo, didn't know what it was. he showed it to me, got my dad infected and then all of a sudden, my older brother's infected. the contagion starts spreading through the family, to me, to my sister. the family's largely been involved in alfa romeos and fiats. concorso italiano starts with the cars. obviously it's italian cars. it's really more of a celebration of italian style and that includes food and fashion and music. we're going to have strolling italian musicians around the grounds tomorrow, that should be a lot of fun. it's always very soothing music, a strolling mandolin. we even got a strolling accordion player. i don't know how you have strolling electronic accordion player, but we're gonna have it. we're gonna achieve that goal tomorrow. the big event that we have at the stage is the fashion show. the fashion show is always the most popular thing the trailing spouse. my spouse probably falls into that category. my wife loves the fashion show, tries to get front and center. we're really trying to celebrate italian fashion. again, just italian lifestyle. we have a bunch of italian executives coming over. we're not celebrating any particular designer or manufacturer this year. as mentioned, it is originals and borne finds. that crosses all marks. we do have maurizio reggiani, the head of r&d for lamborghini. he's gonna be telling us about the lamborghini events. we've got george morel from maserati. after market parts with maserati. we have giordano casarini and andre zagato, both from zagato. they're gonna share some of their stories with us. we're gonna be having of course our favorite is valentino balboni. a long time, now retired lamborghini test driver. he's going to be here. i understand he and jay leno are gonna be on stage for a little bit and have a little talk. there's no shortage of the italians coming over. - i'm tony damato and i'm with meguiar's, i'm the event marketer. meguiar's here at the concorso. got a very special enzo ferrari here today. it's actually one of six black ferraris in the world. six of them were black. black being a color that's very special to meguiar's kind of really showcases our product well. preparing the car is always a special treat. making sure that our product looks its best on the paint, so it's quite the process and it takes some time, but with today's weather, it's been a little bit difficult with the dew, but we made it and it looks great. you know, we're a huge proponent of the hobby. we love car products, we love making sure that the car hobby is supported by the company. it's actually one of a kind, vorsteiner came out and decked the whole car out with a new body kit on it, it's got some tuning suspension. meguiar's wraptivo actually wrapped the car in a matte white. it's a very special car. it was debuted last week at irvine, california. it's a one of a kind car. it's really special to us that we're able to be a part of the project through the whole process. i'd like to show you a special car here today. it's a ferrari enzo. i believe it's the only enzo here at the show today. if you can see, it's a beautiful car. it's got some beautiful paint on it. as you can see, named after the enzo ferrari. it's a very special car, our favorite color black and carbon fibre interior. it's a very light car and it's actually all wrapped in a pure brawl to keep the paint in pristine condition. we wanna make sure that it doesn't get any paint chips and it's able to keep that original paint on there. it's a key to keeping that value of the car. as i mentioned before, we have a very special ferrari 599 here today. it's a wraptivo packaged. it's actually a matte white, meguiar's wraptivo that we have on here. with the vorsteiner body kit on it and some tuning suspension as well. custom one off forged wheels that vorsteiner had made for us, one of a kind wheel. again, some very special stitching inside. matte black finish on the roof. i was actually lucky enough to be at the debut of this car last week in irvine, california. i had to mention to the owner what these letters here meant, 88, and it's actually chinese good luck. so, that's what the significance of those two numbers there have. this is our meguiar's 599. - [voiceover] closed captioning provided by ugh! (mellow music) - hi, i'm eric sands and i am at concorso. i've been here for 10 years, running on and off, mostly on. this is the first year that i've brought a non-italian car with me. i sold my italian car and i bought a porsche turbo. i've been a car enthusiast my whole life. i've always wanted to have a special car. this car appealed to me because it's the right size, feeling sporty car, it's very well built and they handle very well. i was never really a porshe fan before this, but once i really kind of learned about the attributes of the porsches, i was really attracted to them. it's kind of like woodstock for car guys. especially if you like italian cars which i do. i still like italian cars very, very much. you know, it has the famous turbo flares and the wide wheels. it's the top of the line 911 for 1987. at concorso, my friends are here every year, so i wanted to take my car up, let them see why i was a trader and sold my italian car and what i got instead. they still don't understand, but it's a good time. it's a good time and it's a good weekend away from the cares of work and living and day to day. i can come up to our little fantasy land up here and enjoy beautiful design, the sound of these beautiful engines running, see beautiful women this is my porsche 911 turbo. the front of the car, it's very recognizable, it's a porsche, it's the traditional porsche that people are familiar with and they know what it is when they see it. it's very recognizable, although my girlfriend still doesn't understand that the trunk is in the front. she puts her luggage and things at the back for me to load in, but the trunk's in the front. the turbo has the widened wheel wells and bigger highers and wheels. front end rear. they also made a, what they call a turbo look 911 which had the same bodywork and chastity work but without the turbo charged engine, but this one does have the turbo charged engine which is about 300 horsepower. has the famous whale tail. distinctive aerodynamic feature. this car is pretty much all stock and all original. the only difference is that, i can tell from it, are the steering wheel and the stereo. (gentle upbeat music) - my name's sam murtaugh with mecum auction, i'm the marketing and presentation director for mecum. here at monterey 2011, our third year at this event. happy to be here at the hyatt regency on belmonty golf course. got a great show, expanded three days, over 600 cars, nearly 200 motorcycles and a dozen vintage wooden boats. this event here at monterey is really on the rise like the rest of our year at mecum. we enjoy coming to monterey, added it three years ago to our national events that we have from a handful of national events. this event's truly a worldwide event as everyone comes from all over the world to be part of this week in monterey. up in our auction tent we got a great selection of buzz cars so to speak. which is the indie winner of 1931. it won the race and was a prolific performer throughout the '30s. it competed at indie in eight of the 10 years throughout the '30s, which is for a race car is unheard of really. from there, we got two great maseratis. we got a 1960 maserati birdcage. it's certified for vintage racing worldwide by fia. a great gentleman racer. '54 maserati a6gcs, great history, beautiful rare maserati. one of my favorites in there is a 1930 packered 745 waterhouse, it's a gorgeous car. one of the only three known to exist. probably one of only three built ever. yeah, we've really truly got something for everyone. it's one thing that mecum strives to do is really bring a great mix of vehicles for everyone. anywhere from $20,000 cars to multi million dollar cars. we've got 12 of them this year. entry level. we sold a $15,000 boat last night. up in two weeks, there's a boat that's a unique one of a kind garter wood that we expect to have bidding in the range of anywhere from four to 500,000, so some great, great pieces of artwork and great american history in these boats. we've also added nearly 200 motorcyclists to this year's event. thursday night was our motorcycle auction segment. everything from a 1885 penny farthing bicycle to a 2011 yamaha r1 that jay leno offered for charity and was here and helped us sell that. come on down, walk around, it's free to attend this event. plenty of room to walk around, grab a drink, talk over some cars, find something you like and you register to bid and you go on in, participate in the event and sit down and be part of the action. so, it's just a great overall experience. you see it on tv and our television show. when you're here in person, you can really get a real true feeling for what it's all about. it's like nothing else. (intense music) - hi, my name is sean mcrae from san luis obispo, california and i'd like to welcome you to the mecum auto auction in monterey, california. this is my 1969 chevrolet camaro z28. i personally did the restoration on the car. i purchased the car in 1999 from the ford independence indian reservation in owen's valley, california. the car was in pretty rough shape. it was sitting on four flat via split tires with a 1979 registration kit sticker on the license plate. it comes with a standard 302 motor which is in all z28s. that's standard equipment, the only engine you could get for it. it has an m21 which is a muncy four speed transmission in it. 373 posey traction rear end. the motor, the transmission and the rear end the biggest challenge was just talking to people that actually worked for gm or had the technical knowledge of how the cars were actually built. what was true and correct to the car and what wasn't. there's a lot of myths in a car restoration world. people have their own opinions and thoughts. when it comes right down to it though, these cars were put together as quickly as possible on an assembly line that constantly moved and some of the facets of the assembly process, you literally have just a couple of minutes to perform. i've spent 11 years on this car, bringing it back to the state it's in right now which is just as about as close as you can get to a new car. all right, here we go with the car. let me show you what i've done over the past 11 years. the engine compartment has been put back as nearly identical to the day it was born from the factory. what's unique to this car, as with all los angeles or the smog pump which is located down here. the norwood cars did not come with that, only the los angeles built cars that came out of the van ice plant. i've mentioned earlier about the flat top hood. you'll notice that this car has the flat top hood. it was later in the production year that chevrolet made the cal-induction hood standard on all z28s. this car was an early production. at the time it was not ordered with that hood. the back of the car, i spoke earlier, about the stripes on the deck lid. an assembly person at the factory had a very limited amount of time to install a stencil and actually shoot the stripes on the car. i would guess there was very few that have the stripes in the exact position as were specked out in the assembly manual. the trunk area is very basic in these cars. zolatone paint was used to do the black background with the green fleck in the paint. the cars had a basic high lift bumper jack installed (gentle music) - my name is james wallace. i'm from west bloomfield, michigan. and i'm a retired engineer from general motors. i was in a power train system all my life. this car came out of new england area. it was originally delivered in new jersey and then the guy took it rhode island. it was in rhode island all of its life and a friend of mine that lives in rhode island knows i'm into corvettes. he called me and said that hey, he found one in a barn. this car was last registered in 1984. i bought it about eight years ago. it was in quite good condition. it's only got 56,000 miles on it. i did some paint work in the top and cleaned it up, and what have you. it's fairly original car. i virtually did the restoration myself except so you don't want that in your shop. but i did all the prep work for it, but the car was in quite good shape so it didn't require a lot of body work or anything like that. this car, on the low end would probably be around $50,000, the high end would be about $60,000. it'll be somewhere in that market. there's been a fair amount of interest in it, so i suspect that it'll be in that dollar range. it's kind of worth that also, that's what they get for these kinds of original, red convertibles. let's take a view of my '71 lt1 corvette here. there's some interesting facts about this car. it is a fairly rare car. this is a lt1 engine. it's properly detailed everywhere correct. all the finishes are correct. all the hoses, they all have the right part numbers. this is an original engine, so it has the original carburettor on it. it's very rare, it has its original smog system or air system, you don't normally see that on a car this age. most of them have been thrown away this car is unique because it has power steering and power breaks, most of the cars don't. it's a very drivable car, it's enjoyable to drive. another rare feature, a lot of people when they restore cars, they don't get some of these original stickers and things like that on it. that's a nice feature to have on a car. good chrome, we redid the back bumper. front bumper's original, but i redid the chrome on the rear bumper. come around to this side of the car and we can take a look at this window sticker here. this is the original dealer, ar chevrolet out of new jersey. although the car spent most of its life in rhode island. it's kind of interesting. everybody would like to buy a car like this for $6,300 now. (chuckles) instead of 50 to 60,000. i appreciate you taking a look at my wonderful 1971 corvette lt1 convertible, appreciate it, thanks. human coronavirus... hepati- >>c virus. there are a lot of different kinds of yucky germs. but not all disinfecting wipes... are approved to kill the same number of them. lysol wipes are approved to kill more types of germs than clorox. don't pick just any wipe. try that one! this cold and flu season lysol that.
