shore and that's until 11:00 for the high tide cycle this morning. now, we have a few flurries that have been popping up. those are snow showers up the hudson river valley. you see them north of the trains, they're all doing okay. 7 trains we have track work. service is suspended between 31st and 34st street and queensboro plaza. and j trains no service between chambers and broad street. effect. lori, over to you. you. 4:32. we're following two breaking stories. first to long island where part of sunrise highway shut down after a nasty crash. now, the driver of a pickup truck crashed at about 3:00 this morning near great neck road in hauppauge and police say nearby they're looking for that truck after reports that the driver was driving erratically. three people were ejected an rushed to the hospital. we do have a crew headed to the scene. we will continue to bring you the very latest on this breaking story. in the meantime we're also following breaking news in southern germany where two passenger trains collided head on. have been killed and some 150 have been injured about 40 miles from munich. german news reports say that one of the trains derailed and several of its cars overturned. helicopters have been airlifting rescue workers to the scene. there are reports of people still trapped in the wreckage. in newark now, police are investigating the death of a woman whose body was found between two homes. the discovery was made just before 10:00 last night on south 20th street. investigators say the woman appears to have been in her 30s and her death is considered suspicious. 4:33. and mayor de blasio sent volunteers out across new york city this morning to count the homeless. it's part of a program called hope count and these are new pictures of the volunteers working overnight. we've also learned that financial help could be on the way from the obama administration. eyewitness news reporter dray clark live in midtown with the details. good morning, dray. >>reporter: good morning, ken. this is one of the areas mayor morning, west 31st street near 6th avenue. it is a well-known hub for the homeless with at least a dozen people right now sleeping on the sidewalk behind me. they were among those counted for the annual hope count overnight tonight. meanwhile, here is a picture of mayor de blasio talking to one of those homeless individuals here on west 31st street. the mayor was among more than 3,500 volunteers that spread out across the city for a few hours this morning counting the number of unsheltered homeless people living in the city. last year the count was 3,182, and that number is expected to be higher this year. volunteers wrote down some very basic information about the homeless individuals they encounter here on the street in order to help determine what kinds of services and resources they might need to help get them off the street or even survive on the street, if they should refuse help. >> it's very sad, and it's broken down and, you know, there but for the grace of god go i, i think we all have to feel that way. these are people who at some point in their life, maybe not that long ago, had a home, had a more normal situation and -- situation and something went wrong. >> it is ad sad reality and we need to be looking at this in a humane way. we need to have empathy. we need to understand that people need support and resources. not a situation of out of sight out of mind. >>reporter: some critics have said the annual hope count which happens across the country may actually miss some homeless people and that is why mayor de blasio actually launched his homestead program which is a daily canvass of the homeless community, stretching from canal street all the way up to 145th street. again, the idea here is to maintain a connection and establish a relationship between volunteers and the city's homeless community, again, to try and provide them with the best resources also joining the mayor this morning was homeland -- i should say, secretary of housing an urban development julian castro. he was along with the mayor. he said that today president obama will be proposing an $11 billion spending plan to help get homeless families off the streets, and new york city will be receiving some of that money. we're live in midtown, dray clark, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> all right, dray, thank you. closing arguments begin today in the manslaughter trial of a new york cop who shot and killed an unarmed innocent man. an emotional peter lange took the witness stand in his own defense and broke down as he described the night he shot and killed akai girly in a dark stairwell of a housing project in east new york. lange also claim he was startled and accidentally fire his gun. prosecutors say he acted recklessly. well, this morning we have new video of a second person wanted for the brutal beating and robbery of a cab driver. two people accused of attacking saturday. police say the men were passengers in rahman's cab. they're accused of hitting him in the face with a champagne bottle and stealing his jacket. rahman suffer a fractured jaw and required 12 stitches. a man was arrested sunday morning in the attack. the search is on for a man who raped a woman in a bronx stairwell. take a look at this surveillance video released overnight. police say this man followed a woman into an elevator inside a last friday. that's where he attacked her, robbed her, and then taking her into the stairwell where he is accused of sexually assaulting her. the victim is being treated at the hospital. 4:37. a teenager was randomly slashed queens. >> it's a bizarre story, and learning more about the incident. east elmhurst. >> i'm going to be paranoid for a while. >>reporter: vanessa etchberry shoulder for a long time to come. she's nursing a deep gash in her thigh after a random attack when she walked to her car. >> someone was jogging past me, but when they got close to me, i felt a sharp pain on my leg and they started sprinting past, and then that's when i saw the blood. >>reporter: east elmhurst may not be quiet in the literal sense, but if you can bear the noise from round-the-clock landingsality laguardia, people here say it's usually pretty peaceful. this weekend's attack, though, has rattled long-time residents like -- resident like vanessa. top officials say it's likely an isolated incident, but without knowing about the suspect, they can't do it without help from the public. vanessa can't believe it happened to her. >> it's a very safe, very calm place. you don't normally see any of this happen around here. >>reporter: police say this doesn't fit any patterns of slashings that they know of and because no words were spoken during this encounter, they surveillance video of a suspected sexual predator loose on the upper east side of manhattan. take a look at this video, it was recorded inside a store shortly after the attack. police say a man hampshire. in tiny dixville noj, they vote at midnight. bernie sanders won all four democratic votes and ohio governor john kasich sneaked past donald trump 3-2 among republicans. the tiny town near the canadian border has a record of correctly predicting the eventual republican nominee in every election since 1998. clinton has been fight ago double-digit lead by sanders rs r, something that have been some flurries around this morning. that's really what we'll see all day long, a shot at a flurry or two. we look down the beach at asbury park where they just party on right there. i with a couple of flurries, but a light northeast wind this morning as opposed to all that wind we had yesterday, piling up the water, creating that flooding. now, we do have a new moon, we do have a normal is 40. we were right at that. we'll be a little colder than that today. record high is 63 back in '90. we set a lot of record highs back in 1990. but if i am not -- if i am correct, this is the coldest morning ever in the history of new york city. this is the day. it's 15 just tweet me if i'm wrong. i didn't have time to look it up, but i think that is the recordest coldest morning in central park. so we're looking at one to two inches of snow coming in tonight, maybe, you know, more so for the overnight hours. and i think, you know, we're going to have this batch of snow that comes in tonight that's going to be heaviest. so 27 northward towards massapequa, 19 hauppauge, 19 plel, 30, 32 down the shore. it's a cold morning, but the temperatures are pretty close to where they should be for this hour of the day. we still have this northeast wind coming in which comes into the shore. so you'll see we have single digits except for bridgeport at 10 miles per hour. this morning, jfk feels like 17. staten island 27, 10 poord monticello, 25 toward poughkeepsie. so we have a winter weather advisory posted now for much of the area until noon tomorrow. that's with this snow coming in tonight. the weather also -- we still have this flood issue around with that northeast wind coming in, so at the time of high tide there could be some minor koaferl flooding during that high tide -- minor coastal flooding during that high tide cycle this morning. snow showers will be off and cloud cover and kind of chilly. it'll come up, go into some snow showers. this big low pressure system will swing in batch of snow in this evening and tonight which could be heavier to the south. so you see this afternoon from the temperatures it's 31 to 34. tonight there comes this batch of snow we're talking about overnight tonight that could be heavy, particularly in southern new jersey. we'll have some snow showers for tomorrow morning. all right. so we're going to be windy football coach at a miami high school is making history. the coach is the first-ever woman to be named the head coach of a high school football team in florida. brunson is a fhys-ed teacher at the heather, thank you. breaking news on long island. three people were ejected from a pickup truck that slammed into a pole in suffolk county. eyewitness news reporter mallory hoff is live in copage with more for us. mallory. >>reporter: lori, good morning. an i do want to get you straight to the scene right now. as you can see suffolk county police have blocked off this area eastbound sunrise highway is shut down right now. i do want to show you some video of how the scene looked immediately following this accident. at 3:01 this morning, we're told suffolk police received a call for a vehicle swerving and driving erratically. police arrived at the scene and first down a pickup truck crashed into that pole. it appears according to police that the truck struck the center divider and went across the eastbound lanes before crashing. the fire chief on scene says fire crews found three people in the street when they arrived. one of those victims was struck by a car after he was ejected from the pickup truck. that person, we're told, was taken by helicopter to stoneybrook university hospital, the other two victims were taken to good samaritan hospital. now, back out here live, as you can see right now the road does remain blocked off. this as investigators try to determine exactly what happened here in the moments before 3:00 this morning. for now we've live in suffolk county, mallory hoff, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> mallory, thank you. 5:04. germany where at least four people have been killed, 150 hurt when two passenger trains collided head on. the crash involved two regional of munich. this is new video coming in from the scene showing the damage. helicopters are swooping in to speed up the evacuation of the injured. there are reports of passengers still trapped in all the wreckage. at least one train derailed several of its cars overturned. dozens of passengers who were not injured in a frightening bus crash in connecticut are back home this morning. the bus was heading to the mohegan sun casino yesterday when it overturned on a snowy i- 75 in madison, connecticut. about 30 of the 70 people were hurt, none seriously, though. the northbound lanes were closed until the bus could be moved. 5:04. we're learning more about the death of an 81-year-old woman in jersey city. investigators have ruled her death a homicide, saying it to death inside her home. the body was found sun morning after church friends became worried when she did not show up for mass. no arrests have been made. in other news this morning, a group of thieves very fond of fur and police want them behind bars. police say that at least four people are involved in the thefts which started back in october. two suspects were caught on video. the pattern is to distract the clerk and then walk out with a hidden item. well, the crooks have gotten away with a cape, fur blankets and several fur coats. give police a call if you recognize them. time is 5:05. it is primary day in new hampshire and this morning the first votes are already in. ohio governor john kasich and vermont senator bernie sanders got an early boost this morning. they won the vote in dixville notch, that flurries around temperature 27, humidity is at eight. yesterday those winds were at 30 miles an hour, so they've calmed down because the storm that was in the atlantic has pushed on out into the north atlantic, and now we still see the pressure falling, though, 29.67. so it'll abbreezey day and we'll have this atmosphere unstable. yesterday's high was 39 which is right at our normal and we're going to be looking at temperatures today that are going to be below normal. snow showers through tomorrow could bring a coating, but it looks like we're going to have one to three inches of snow that's going to be coming in between tonight and tomorrow and we're going to have a cold 25 in smithtown to brookhaven. 29 in oyster bay. 24 in bridgeport, 29 in monticello. so you add a little light wind, it's just a few degrees colder here. we do have this winter weather advisory. that means for snow showers, cold weather. you know, usually an advisory means light snow amounts and a few inches. that's what we'll have coming through tonight and that lasts until noon tomorrow. coastal flood warning is in effect for this morning's high tide cycles, south shore of long island and jersey shore. some big old coastal flooding yesterday, you know, with the northeast wind and a new moon and, of course, the tide cycle. off to the north those flurries that we're talking about, nothing really going on right now. but another batch to our south poised to come up around this giant upper level low which is like a giant ferris wheel and it'll spin up some snow showers, in particular a heavy batch later on this evening. so as we go into the day, we get to 3:00, 4:00, 5:00 this afternoon, that batch of snow we're talking is just poised off to our west, temperatures in the mid-30s. here comes that batch for this through the morning commute tomorrow. so that is what we'll be keeping our eye on. and then we'll still be seeing temperatures in the mid-30s. after school today, kiddoes, the snow showers, chilly, 34, make sure you dress warmly. i think farther to the south between tonight and tomorrow morning you get a heavy batch in here through gloucester county, middlesex, monmouth, ocean county where you could get three to six inches of snow. snow showers, slick spots this morning, blustery and cold tonight, snow showers, one to two inchts, heavier off to the south. and then we got cloudy skies and flurries tomorrow. the temperatures going to be right around 40. your accuweather seven-day forecast, we've got those flurries on thursday, and then friday, well, katie bar the door because the cold air is coming down out of the arctic for the weekend, coldest weekend so far of the winter is this weekend. real feels in the single digits this weekend. >> is this p.v. weather, polar morning. why honda is recalling one of its best sellers. we have a new video this morning of an active volcano 5:21. new video out of mexico shows an active volcano spewing ash more than a mile into the air. that volcano erupted yesterday morning, forcing a nearby airport to shut down for two hours while workers cleared ash from the runways. it's one of the most active volcanos in mexico and is looking south here down the east river. i don't know, but there is some serious, serious steam coming out of this building. i'll show you. right there, little red line right there. see that steam coming out there? that is some serious -- somebody building some serious heat in that building. you don't have to worry about being cold today. temperatures of 27 exwreas, we got a little -- 27 degrees, a little northeast wind here. 27, 28 around the five boroughs. 19 monticello, 19 around montauk, 30 down the shore. we're looking at a winter weather advisory for a few inches of snow this evening and tonight. that will last until noon tomorrow. glad warning for this morning's high tide cycle. south shore of long island, jersey shore with that northeast wind. so we're looking at snow showers, 34 by noontime, periods of snow heavy this evening and tonight. we could have some accumulating snow tonight and that would be for the commute tomorrow morning. we'll talk about that next. today. lori and ken, over to you. >> okay, heather, thank you. it's 5:32. police are investigating a report of an out-of-control truck and at the time they make a horrific discovery >> that's right. three people were ejected from the truck just after 3:00 this morning on sunrise highway and great neck road. eyewitness news reporter mallory hoff is live now in copiage in suffolk county. mallory. >>reporter: good morning, lori, ken. i do want to get you straight to the scene right now. as you can see the road here is blocked off, and that pickup truck, well, it's sitting exactly where it came to a stop this morning. take a look at this video. this is how the scene looked following the crash just after suffolk police got a call about a vehicle swerving and driving erratically. police arrived on sunrise highway near great neck road. that's where they found a pickup truck that had crashed into a pole. police say it appears the truck struck the center divide and then went across the eastbound lanes before crashing into the pole. the fire chief on scene says when crews arrived, they found three people on the road, the chief says one of the victims was hit by a car after being ejected from that pickup. that person was taken by helicopter to stoneybrook hospital. the other two victims were taken to good samaritan hospital. at this hour still no word on their conditions. and as you can tell, the road remains blocked off this morning, that as more and more investigators appear to be arriving here on the scene, trying to figure out exactly what led up to this accident around 3:00 this morning. live in suffolk county, mallory hoff, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> mallory, thank you. we have new details now on a breaking story in germany. confirmed dead after two trains collide head on. the crash involving two regional trains in bavaia, about 40 miles outside of meun irk. take a look at the scene. the force of this crash destroyed at least one train car. helicopters are flying in to speed up the evacuation of the injured. at least 150 people were hurt and also one train derailed and several of its cars overturned. 5:34. new this morning, the search is on for the man who raped a woman in a bronx stairwell. take a look at this surveillance video overnight. it was released. police say this man followed a woman into an elevator inside a building in university heights last friday. that's where he attacked her, robbing her, taking her into a stairwell where he's accused of sexually assaulting her. the victim is being treated at the hospital. well, a sexual predator also on the loose on the upper east side of manhattan. the nypd releasing this video of the suspect from inside a store. it was recorded february 6th, police say he grab the woman from behind on east 94th street, threw her to the ground an then assaulted her. he also stole her cash. if you have any information on this, you are asked to call police. this morning we have new video of a second person police want for the brutal beating and robbery of a cab driver. now, take a look at this surveillance video. police say this man is one of two people accused of attacking a driver atour rockman just before midnight on saturday. police say the men were passengers in rockman's cab. they're accused of hitting him in the face with a champagne bottle and then stealing his jacket. rockman suffered a fractured jaw and required 12 stitches. a 16-year-old was arrested sunday morning in the attack. also police are investigating the death of a woman whose body was found between two homes. the discovery was made just before 10:00 last night on south 20th street. investigators say the woman appears to have been in her 30s and her death is considered suspicious. closing arguments are manslaughter trial of an nypd officer who shot and killed an unarmed young man. peter leeange got emotional when he took the witness stand in his own defense yesterday. he broke down as he described the night he shot and killed 28- year-old kye girly in a dark stairwell of a housing project in east new york, brooklyn. leange claims he was startled and accidentally fired his gun. prosecutors say he acted recklessly. time is 5:36. thousands of volunteers spent the night fanned out across the five boroughs in the one-night count of homeless people on the street. the hope count is getting extra attention this year due to an increase in homelessness. mayor de blasio sent out this tweet, each person we count had their own path to the streets and each should have their own path away from it. eyewitness news reporter dray clark is live in midtown. dray. >>reporter: good morning, ken. the annual hope count concluded at around 4:00 this morning. the count has been happening since 2003. and according to his staff, new york city mayor to actually get out on the streets on the night of the event and actively engage homeless people for the annual hope count. now, here is a picture of mayor de blasio talking to one of the members of the homeless community here on west 31st street in midtown. about 3,500 volunteers spread out across the city to count the city's unsheltered homeless population. last year the count was 3,182 and the number is expected to be higher this year. certainly in recent months the city's homeless population has been getting a lot of attention. now, some homeless support groups say they don't believe that the annual hope count is a true and real representation of the city's homeless population because not everyone who is homeless is on the streets, especially on mornings when it's freezing cold like we have this morning. so the mayor launched his homestead homeless outreach program and essentially workers block, stretch frg canal street to 145th street to look for homeless individuals in those homeless hot spots. the idea is to make sure those men and women have the resources and necessities they need like medical attention if necessary, services they might otherwise go without. >> we want to constantly not just count how many homeless are on the streets, but literally be able to have a profile of each individual and what they need. it's a whole different kind of concept. we're going to engage each person on the street, every person, we want to know their name, their history, what their needs are and keep coming back in whatever language they speak until we find a way to get them off the streets. >>reporter: and volunteers used these green questionnaires as they engage and approach the homeless men and women on the street, again, to take down notes on their gender, their age and whether or not they're a veteran and what resources and attention they might need as they choose some of them to sleep here on the street. the idea is to keep a database, individuals might be on a day- to-day basis. also back here live here on west 31st street where there are about a dozen or so people sleeping on the sidewalk behind me, h.u.d. secretary julian castro also joined the mayor on this annual hope count and he says that today mayor -- or i should say, president obama will be proposing an $11 billion spending plan that will be carry out over 10 years to help get homeless families off the street and new york city could be receiving some of that money. we're live in midtown, dray clark, her leg. 19-year-old vanessa etchevati was walking to her car early sunday morning on 25th avenue in east el mhurst when she saw someone jog toward her. when that person went away, she felt a sharp pain on her leg and noticed some blood. the teenager says this kind of violence is unusual in her neighborhood >> that's why i was shock. tweas a very safe place, it's a very calm place. you don't really see any of this happen around here. i'm going to be paranoid for a while. >> she was not able to get a good look at the person who slash her, but was able to tell police that the attacker had a gray hooded jacket. they had the most -- i the most magical afternoon at n.j. pack with disney musicals and some super talented young people. i hosted the event with allows disney musicals in schools. some 170 kids participated. they look so cute. n.j. pack is one out of five performing arts centers in the country select bid disney to they then pick five public elementary schools in newark. the $100,000 grant allows schools a production license which can be very costly. and the kids, they make the set, they make the costumes >> wow! >> it literally opens up a whole new world to them, [ laughter ] >> no. he was busy forecasting the weather for the millions. >> here we go. we'll take a look at the camera from the roof of the chrysler building toward roosevelt island, all the way out to flushing bay. we got cloudy skies, some flurries around. so for the afternoon we're going to be looking in the way of more flurries popping up. humidity 78%, the temperature 27. we got a northeast wind at five. so the wind is not as harsh as yesterday, the 30 mile per hour gusts. temperatures near 40. we'll be below that today. and we're looking at what's going to be some snow showers off and on today and we're going to be seeing that might actually get heavier tonight with one to three inches of snow, more to our south and west. and so this snow is kind of wrapping itself around a rather large upper level low that will continue to swing through the area. and so this upper level low you see is going to bring a batch of snow this evening and tonight. and that will continue moving our way. and then this weekend it is going to get quite cold as we get into saturday and sunday, 22 the high saturday with some snow overnight friday and saturday morning, and 19 the high on sunday. bitter cold weekend, the coldest so far. 26 in copiage, 19 around monticello, 24 poughkeepsie. winds are out of the northeast eight down around the jersey shore. 17 is the temperature at laguardia, 18 long island, 26 around the bronx and up to our north we are seeing some chilly numbers. 14 the real feel in white plains. winter weather advisory for a few inches of snow tonight overnight and until noon tomorrow as that winter weather advisory, so that could make the roadways slippery. we have a coastal flood warning this morning for high tide, time. now. this is the radar minus the clouds. we do have cloudy skies. just want to show you where the snow is occurring. you see it's in broang patches here that will swing through today and give us some slick spots this morning with a few snow showers, but tonight we have about one to two inches, maybe three inches of snow from the city northward, then heavier in southern new jersey, maybe even four, five, six inches of snow around south jersey. a few flurries, cloudy skies tomorrow, temperature near 40. here's your accuweather seven- day forecast, 32 on thursday, 29, brisk and colder on friday. 19 for the high on saturday, 22 on monday, 20 degrees on monday, lows at night around the 20s to the teens and the single digits, 7 the low saturday night. so get ready for that. i mean, when i say get ready for that, i mean, make sure that the furnace and the gas heaters, space heaters, electric heaters, all that is working fine. check it out because it's going to really get some wear and tear on it this weekend >> okay. thank you, bill. how about the roads, are they getting some wear and tear?
