westchester county, through greenwich. so that gets out of the way in a little while. and it's gone by 7:00. sun comes to out midday, through the afternoon we will warm to about 58 degrees. it's weather and then heather. happy thursday to you. >> happy thursday to you. let's go over to our mass transit chart. and the jfk air train is suspended until 8:00 a.m. long island doing okay. new jersey transit no major problems. and metro north is okay. the subways are running on or close to schedule. and we have the grand central parkway east at the kew gardens interchange being cleared away. the deegan southbound ramp to the westbound side of the cross bronx, the right lane closed down. a debris spill. that has to be cleaned up. and 1st avenue remains closed north 57th up to 65th street because of monday's brick incident. and 63rd closed between york and 2nd. and street cleaning rules are in effect. >> thank you. in brooklyn, streets are closed as crews work to contain a gas leak. >> this led to evacuations last night but families in four homes are back inside this morning. we are live at the scene with the work under way right now. >> reporter: yes, ken, that's one good element to this story. but we have a high-pressure gas main that had a gaping hole in it. it now has a safety bag on it to contain the leak. and families are allowed back in their homes but it was a different story late last night. utility crews faced a tough street here because they couldn't find the source of the we're told this neighborhood also was flooded with the smell of natural gas. four multi-family homes were evacuated. firefighters broke down basement doors in some cases to that leak. the quick action though is understandable in light of the march 2014 gas explosion in people and leveled two apartment buildings. this morning, a national grid crew is here keeping an eye on the high pressure gas main making sure the bag continues to contain the leak until repair crew cans get here this morning. just another reminder, if you smell something like natural gas, call authorities. channel 7 eyewitness news. >> all right. thank you very much. new video just in to the newsroom shows the suspect in a string of arsons in queens. this man was caught on camera walking near the scene just 10 minutes before a fire on 68 drive back on november 8th. it was the second in a series of fires at homes all under construction in forest hills. in the video, you can see the suspect bend down and get a gun from his ankle before putting it into his pocket. family members of a teenager hit and killed by a hit-and-run driver in queens will join lawmakers in a call for increased traffic safety. and junction boulevards where the 17-year-old was killed late tuesday night. last night, friends and loved ones gathered at the scene to call for the driver to come forward. >> i just don't understand how someone could just, you know, take a lifeline that, and you know, as of now, feel -- life like that, and you know, as of now, feel no remorse. >> tomorrow, later, no matter what, we will find the guy. >> police say the car then hit the junior high school student with a black toyota camry. if you have information, you are asked to call crime stopper. despite the firestorm over his comment, donald trump is refusing to back down in his plan to ban all muslims from entering the united states, although on a temporary basis. he insist such a ban is necessarily especially after the recent terror attack in san bernardino. and now he spoke with dave evans during a visit to our studios on the upper west side. look, we're a country of laws. we're a country where you have to behey. you can't knock down buildings and do the kind of things that are happening in our country. happened in california and with the world trade center. >> we asked trump if he might run as an independent. and he down played the possibility saying he is sure he will not only get the nomination, he thinks he can win the whole thing. you can view the full interview at abc7ny.com. there's heightened security at mosques in jersey city. the mayor is increasing police patrols near mosques. an islamic center received letters and phone calls. several of the callers praised donald trump. and police are also investigating threatening phone calls. and boxing legend mohammed ali is did you announcing trump's proposal but he is also ruthless violence of so-called islamic jihaddist. he says their actions go against the tenants of islam and he is calling on fellow muslim, quote, to stand up to those who use islam to advance their own personal agenda. stay with eyewitness news and abc news for updates on the immigration firestorm. paltrow's pop-up store at columbus street. 6:11. new video of the one of the men accused of stealing tens of thousands of dollars worth of jewelry from gwyneth paltrow's pop-up shop. investigators say the suspect pried open a cabinet and took costing nearly $175,000. a section of 1st avenue on the upper east side remains closed to pedestrians this morning and near the scene of a brick facade collapse. businesses near 1st avenue and east 63rd street planned to re- open last night after workers dismantled the remaining bricks. but the crews still deemed it too unsafe. monday night, a large section of the brick fell from the high- rise on 64th street. amazingly, no one was hurt. since this is december, you can call what you're about to see an early christmas miracle, a minnesota high school basketball. the team in red is up by two with 1.6 seconds left. the home team grabs the missed free throw and with a little hail mary help, nothing but net. and won by one point. and then the and then into the weekend. here's a look outside this morning. we look at the cameras here in brooklyn. the lower east side toward the battery and staten island ferry on the left and the brooklyn bridge on the right, 53 degrees. and the winds continue southwest. and that's a warm wind that's going to drive the temperature up. yesterday's high 55, warmer today. and we're looking at 53 around the parks. about 53 toward laguardia airport. and 49 up toward white plains. these numbers are way warm for this hour of the day. some 15, 20 degrees warmer than normal. and that's how it's going to be through the weekend. showers are left in rockland, westchester county and those are sliding eastward. and that will move up into connecticut there and fairfield county. clear and partly cloudy skies and it will slide eastward and warm things up today. by noontime and the early afternoon, looking at 56 and 58 degrees today. tonight, we've got warm numbers again, overnight and then tomorrow, by the time we get into the afternoon once again, warmer air comes in. and we start tomorrow in the upper 40s to low 50s. by afternoon, looking at temperatures in up ther 50s to 60 degrees tomorrow. and you see 61 down in jersey shore there. it's going to be warm. after school, great weather. partly cloudy skies and looking at 58 and temperatures this weekend 60 on saturday. and 64 sunday. and that would tie the record high set back in 1923 as the temperature this weekend, 10 to 20 degrees warmer than normal. and 58 58 with the morning shower. and mild. and then it's very mild tomorrow. look at that, 60 degrees tomorrow. very mild to milder to mildest that could be a record high. and monday it's warm, 62. but a front comes through monday with a shower and a thunderstorm and maybe even thunder. but next week we cool down into the 50s. and those numbers are warmer than normal for this time of the year. it's thursday, right? >> right. >> yes. >> yeah, so thursday. got nobody out first is southbound. and then we have the other one on the deegan, the ramp to the westbound side of the cross bronx the right lane closed down. and reports that it was a garbage truck and a debris spill but looks like that was a tractor-trailer. so we will get more information there. 57th up to a6th street because of monday's brick inspiration kent. and 63rd street closed assault. and this is people were allowed back inside their homes this morning. and new this morning, the search for a group of teenage robbers targeting people in central park. and we are following breaking news on the major deegan expressway where there's an overturned tractor-trailer. we are over the scene in news copter 7. >> good morning. this could not have happened in a worse spot. you can see the garbage hauler that overturned on the common ramp from the north and southbound sides of the major deegan expressway. and now a little bit of good news, at least when it overturned, all the debris spilled over the ramps but right now, all lanes shut down as you try and get to the westbound cross bronx. what you need to know, northbound, the delay that bad. you can see it's really just a ramp delay. we want to show you what's happening on the southbound side. despite an accident by fordham look at the line of headlights. it's a nightmare on the southbound side of the major deegan. and reporting well, starts out mild today. and no question about it, you will feel how mild it is when you walkout side. the temperature this hour, 53 degrees. we've got a southwest wind at 8 miles per hour and gusting up to the 18 miles per hour. so that's just pouring the warm air in here. and northport, 52. 53 islip. that little shower is cutting up throughputtal and northern westchester county now the through fairfield. and that's that. the sun is going to be coming out. check this out, 56 at noon and 58 this afternoon. and normal is 45. so we will run 15 to 20 degrees warmer than normal from this we will talk about the weekend coming up. let's go over what shannon was showing us. what a mess on to the major deegan. and now the delay begins up. and continuing southbound into the cross bronx expressway, you have an accident over here at fordham road but it doesn't matter you're you're stuck this the delay anyway. and that takes to you the deegan, the common ramps to the hamilton bridge where the overturned garage hauler and that's not spelled correctly but it's being cleared away. we have a debris spill on the ramp. this is what happens when you're trying to get the maps done quickly for a report. 63rd closed between york avenue and 2nd. this is definitely causing delays across the ed koch 959th street bridge. and the street cleaning rules are in effect. mass transit not that people can go back into their homes but it was a different story late last night. utility crews faced a tough night of ripping open 64th street to turn off emergency valves because they couldn't find the source of the leak. we are told this neighborhood was flooded with the smell of natural gas. four multi-family homes were evacuated and firefighters broke down basement doors in some cases to evacuate people and search for that leak. >> i think aisle glad they caught it in time. i'm glad that -- i think i'm glad they caught nit time. and i'm glad we're not in danger. and i applaud them for doing the work they're doing. i don't find criticism with it. is understandable in light of the march 2014 gas explosion in east harlem that killed eight people and leveled two apartment buildings. also developing, the search is on for a brown of -- for a group of teenagers targeted people inside central park and robbing them. and just hours ago, there was yet another robbery inside the park. and we are live near the park with the latest. >> reporter: well, good morning, ken. because of the recent armed robbery, the nypd has stepped up their patrolsment you can see behind me an officer stationed here near 9 -- patrols. you can see behind me officer stationed here near 96th street. the most recent happening around 3:00 this morning. here is video of the police searching for the suspects. robbed a man of $2,000 cash, his cellphone and his shoes. luckily the victim was not injured. and now a look at the other robberies that happened this week that are connected. this map shows you where they occurred. the first one happening at 97th and central park west and the second one happening at 91st. monday night around 11:15, police say four young men between 15 and 18 years old robbed a queens man at gun point, stealing his backpack along with his cellphone and several credit cards. the victim in that instance was not injured. about 20 minutes later at 91st and central park west at 11:35 and several blocks away, police believe the same group of teenagers robbed two women who are 26th and 45 years old. again, police say the suspects used a gun to get what they wanted. and in that case, an off-duty police officer happened to also be inside the park and saw the teens acting suspiciously. they got away. so again, the suspects in all of the robberies still on the run and police say they should be considered armed and dangerous. and if you have any information, you should give police a call. live this morning in central park, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> thank you. 6:35. and police are hoping some newly released video will help lead to the arrest of two men wanted for a stabbing in the east village. a video caught on a surveillance camera is very clear. police say the suspect approached a 49-year-old man near 2nd avenue early saturday morning. the suspects then stabbed the victim several times in the back. the victim had to be treat at the hospital for injuries and then released. an arrest has been made in the robbery and rape of a woman in a billing stairwell in brooklyn. the 31-year-old suspect is in custody this morning. police say that he raped a woman in the stairwell sunday night. police say that he is the man after the attack. and he is also wanted for robbing another woman less than an hour after the rape. we are closely following new developments in that san bernardino terror attack. the fbi saying this morning that the couple who carried out the attack use encryption technology to cover their trail. abc news has learned much of the communication between syed rizwan farook and his wife tashfeen malik, much of that was encrypted. this has presented a challenge for investigators as they try to access information on the couple's phones and computers the. the fbi director says encrypted communications are a key method of the islamic state. >> there's no doubt that the use of encryption is part of the terrorist's trade craft now because they understand the problems we have getting court orders to be effective when they're using the mobile messaging apps. >> sources say authorities are working around the clock to decode the encryption. santa-con is coming to town public transit. the log lirr and metro north are bang alcohol during santa- con weekend. alcohol will not be allowed on trains or in stations starting 11:00 tomorrow night through noon on sunday. metro north ban starts 5:00 saturday morning. and this year, santa-con bar crawl kicks off saturday morning and goes to the lower east side. >> yeah, you take a driver in police custody. and ahead, five years later, and the beach murders remain unsolved. the move suffolk county police plan to take today to crack the cold case. and as heather showed us, news scene of a wild crash in lower manhattan that ended with a driver this police custody. this is the top story on our news app. it happened as the driver was getting off the manhattan bridge about 9:00 last night. instead of turn, the driver crashed through the median, knocked down a sign and several trees and then slammed into a police car right outside a police precinct. so the risk of an accident happening is high. and i could have been just walking and not 20 or 30 minutes after this happened. that's insane. like i should be more cautious now. >> well the driver is suspected of dwi but has not been charged. he and one other person are being treated for minor injuries. today marks five years since the gilgo beach murders. and still no arrests have been made and there's been no new leads. the suffolk county police will join forces with the federal government today in hopes of cracking that case. the department will announce a closer collaboration with federal officials and other law enforcement to try to root out new leads. the remains of a woman were discovered in the area december 11th, 2010. nine more bodies were found in the days and months that followed. happening today, police commissioner bill bratton heads to washington, d.c. to push for permanent renewal of the zadroga act with its health he will join senators in calling for the renewal. the coverage is set to run out next october. the push is on to get it passed by tomorrow before the congressional session ends for the holidays. 6:44. new morning, the same old story for power ball. no nobody took home the big off load this and up right it. if you are traveling northbound on the major deegan expressway, a long ramp delay but the southbound side of the major deegan, look at the volume. it's a bumper-to-bumper to jam that takes you back to the courtland park. avoid this if you can. >> i would. now over to a camera and show you how things are looking and see if it's affecting the george washington bridge inbound. you are slowing up on the upper- levels and the lower level. and the maps and talk about the c and f train, mechanical problems at roosevelt avenue. and the r train, some airport. they put together a special flight for patients at st. barnabas and university hospital to a far away land, the north pole. and they must have used some holiday magic because the flight only
