and like i said, this building right here. you have a lot of commerce. you get all types of building that come through here now because you have the light rail. >> the shooting happened around 6:30 at monitor and johnston in jersey city. police called it a tragic end to a domestic dispute. they searched for the suspect called armed and dangerous. >> i know i gunshot when i hear a gunshot. >> a few hours and three miles away, a man heard the shot and then ran to the park. at the time, filled with children to find his childhood friend slumped over a bench. the gunman had taken his own life after police say he shot the woman on monitor street. >> i didn't think he would do something like that. we have our moments but i didn't like. that he is a really, you get to know him, you would be shocked, too. . >>reporter: the stranger, the morning, she was cut by a bit of shattered glass from the gunshot. police tell me she was fine. released from the hospital around 11:00 this morning. the woman murdered, we know very little about her or her history with this man. the suspect, who took his own life, police are staying very quiet about that at this hour. we're live in jersey city tonight. michelle charlesworth, channel 7, eyewitness news. >> thank you, michelle. a also in new jersey, crews in hoboken working to repair a broken water main. the break so bad it caused a sinkhole that ended up swallowing up a car. eyewitness news reporter lauren glassberg is in hoboken with how the repairs are going right now. >>reporter: the work is continuing right now, we're corner of 1st andvillea. psych jack hammering and digging right behind me. it is up the block toward clinton. the water was shut off many hours ago. the flooding is long over but digging, and then repaving to be done. >> i knew the second there, is a break. >> tina love land figured how things work but hadn't accounted for what would happen to her boyfriend's sglar it is 66 years old and paid off. that is the good part. i called the insurance company to let them know. so now just go through the motions to wait and see what happens. >> it was retrieved but there won't be any driving in it and there was very little business to be done here. shops closed, no water available and no pedestrians or cars allowed. this doctor had to send patients to another office. >> what are you going to do? just go with the. >>reporter: well, that certainly one way to describe this situation. he normally sees about 60 patients a day at this hoboken office. no word on when he will be able to see any patients here. we're waiting to hear back from the city about how long people street to be closed because of this water main break. glassberg. channel 7, eyewitness news. >> okay, lauren, thank you. now to the weather where it is cold, wet and windy, after several days of above average temperatures it was a raw and rainy start to the work week. forward. meteorologist lee goldberg is outside the studios in the upper forecast. lee, i have to say you look cute out there. >> i appreciate that. what can we expect? anything but this i hope. was it a dream last week? 80 degrees. the gloves and scarf are back and it is raw and disgusting. temperatures in the 40s. this is the first time we've had daylight temperatures stuck in the 40s since the 66th. it is overcast. we're -- 6th. it is overcast. we're only at 40 degrees. 40s and upper 30s to the north and west. you factor in the wind which is gusting up to about 36 miles an hour, that is an east, north windchills. i mean, it feels like freezing in white plains. 33 in the park. 34 in islip. it is truly a raw afternoon and made much worse because of what we have gotten used to. rain fall amounts vary quite a bit. very far north. a third of an inch. half inch in newark and more than 3/4 of an inch down the jersey shore. i notice the rain fall right now it is heavy. sorry about the siren. this point. as we go through the evening hours, we're looking at rain and drizzle but i also think some of the heavier rain fall is going to be returning briefly during the evening before it winds down and after that it will be rain and drizzle overnight to sum things up, basically, one more round of heavier rain, drizzle and fog by dawn and 50s tomorrow. we'll come back and give you the complete accuweather forecast when things calm down. >> thanks, a lot. a family mourning a terrible loss. dead after a house fire in new jersey. the flames broke out this morning inside a house on high street in orange. a 2-year-old and 9-year-old were killed along with their uncle. part of the house collapsed and it took firefighters more than an hour to get the fire under control. >> this is, my family grew up. this is our home of 37 years. this is what little kids, they didn't get a chance at life and sadly, they're gone. they're gone. they didn't get a chance at life. this is our home. we've been here for 37 years. my grandmother owned this house. this is home. this is home f. >> the names of the victims have not been released yet because it is still under investigation. now to another heartbreaking story. a 2-year-old girl has died after she apparently drowned in the bathtub of a home in brooklyn. mel melanie fang died in the bathtub. the home. no charges have been filed. autopsy results confirmed that two people who died in the tug boat crash drowned. the tub boat hit the barge saturday morning and sent a third person missing presumed dead may still be inside the tug boat. westchester county executive says crews are working on a salvage plan. >> the crew that would come in would actually lift the boat up, obviously the water has to be out of the boat and then the police begin their investigation before anything else can happen. >> crews are also working to minimize the environmental impact of this crash. they're working to clean up the fuel spilled from the tug boat. a somber final salute this afternoon for a new jersey state trooper killed on the job. hundreds of mourners gathered for the funeral of officer shawn cullin. the 31-year-old was struck and killed last tuesday while responding to a car fire. after he stepped out of his cruiser. cullin is the third state trooper to die in the line of duty in 10 months. call it super tuesday part three. for the third straight week. voters will head to the polls for the race for president. >> while there will be primaries in five states, two, florida and ohio, could go a long way in determining whether donald trump is the republican nominee. details. marcy? >> no idea where she might be. >> she went to lunch down in ocean township march 8th. her friend says she dropped her off to catch the train in long branch. her son donte called his grandmother. >> told me his mother didn't come home. did i know where she was at. and i told him i didn't. >>reporter: they even tried to contact her cell phone. >> her cell phone last pinged at long branch train station at 7:02. >> that is about the time she should have gotten on the train. >> what makes her disappearance more troubling is that she is still recovering after being shot in a terrifying ordeal with her 15-year-old daughter in november of last year. they were getting into their car in linden mr. when police say tyrena was hit several times and her daughter was grazed. >> she observed a man approaching her, words were exchanged between the man and younger girl and the mother became concerned and told the daughter to get in the car. once the daughter got in the car, they were starting to pull out of the driveway, the man then drew a firearm, a handgun, and walked around to the front of the car and proceeded to fire multiple gunshots at the car. >> since then, tyrena has had a long recovery with suffering effects sdwl. >> she has limited movement in her right arm as a result of the gunshots in november. so she really can't move her right arm as well. >> she was wearing this noticeable shirt with a glitter basketball seen in this photo with her son. she was also wearing this black jacket in a previous photo with her friend, christine peoples. police tell the family they're looking through video to see if they can spot her. >> that is where she is and that is what we want to know. >> the family holds on to hope >> sooner or later she will come home. >> police have also not made an arrest in the original shooting. reporting live in lenden, tim fleischer, channel 7, eyewitness news. tim, thank you. nassau county police are taking action after a spike in home robberies. there were 172 residential burglaries across the county as of march 9th. that is a 28% rise from the previous year. nassau police now are forming a task force to find ways to stop these crimes. a yonkers man accused of murdering his neighbor earlier this year pleading not guilty to the charges. prosecutors say mills and david penock had an on going despite with mills chocking penock inside his own apartment. by the time they got there, he had no pulse. he died weeks later as a result of the injuries. mills is charged with murder, burglary and strangulation. be closed torso students and service covel haylett. he was shot after playing in a game for accomplished seniors. they voted unanimously to cancel classes tomorrow and services will be held. police have not made any arrests in the shooting. they don't believe he was the intended target. cornell university announced they will hold a public funeral for her. she was 52 and the first female president. a memorial gathering will be held on campus thursday afternoon in which friends, family members, and university leaders are expected to speak. it is being dubbed the decisive moment for one of mayor de blasio's most ambitious initiatives affordable housing. the mayor toured an apartment building in harlem where a handful of apartments are being renovated by the city. so far, the city has made affordable housing units in 28 buildings just in harlem alone. >> this is the issue that so many new yorkers care about. can they stay in the home? how did that 2-year-old baby girl drown in a bathtub when both parents were home? some answers as early as tomorrow but police are questioning the parents now. >> reporter: police are still at the home where a 2-year-old girl died apparently drowning in a bathtub while both parents were in the house. >> we're currently investigating that as a child abuse case. there is no history at the reports. we're waiting for the m.e.'s death. >> reporter: police got to the home early this morning. 2-year-old melody phang was transported to the hospital where she was pronounced dead. police removed a 4-year-old sibling from the home as well. that boy had had bruising around his neck police sources say. and he has been placed with children's services. neighbors couldn't believe what happened. >> i was in shock. i work in a school with kids and i love kids and i really feel very sad. really. >> we couldn't find any neighbors who knew the parents who knew the family at all. been charged with any crime here yet in connection with this incident. but the police are questioning the parents and of course they're awaiting the medical examiner's report. reporting live from sunset park, jim dolan, channel 7 eyewitness news. crews in westchester county have taken the first step to create a salvage plant to remove a tug boat. that boat went down after hitting a barge early saturday morning. two bodies have since been removed from the wreckage. and today westchester county executive rob astorino explained what has to be done before the search can continue for a third victim. >> there are parts of the tug boat that are completely inaccessible and only when the tug boat is raised up can they continue with the investigation. >> autopsy results for the two drowning. right now the drilling and jackhammering continues in hoboken to repair the damage from a water main and to restore water to homes and businesses.
