searching every building at every school looking for anything suspicious or out of the ordinary. district officials acknowledged receiving threats before at individual schools or buildings, but they say this threat was different, a threat against students at many schools. >> i think it is important that i take the precaution based on what has happened recently and what has happened in the past. >> as for the situation here in new york, again, officials received the same threat concluded it was a hoax, decided not to close any of the schools here in the five boroughs. we heard from mayor de blasio >> there's all sorts of hoaxes, all sorts of threats that come in and have for years and years. as leaders, it is our job to protect public order and to keep things moving forward in this city, and to certainly not aid and abet those who want to sell panic. so an everyday hoax is something that has to be weighed smartly. i have tremendous faith in exhibitioner bratton and deputy commissioner and nypd leadership that they assess these type of realities all the time. >> a developing story for sure. here's a tweet that went out. we're very comfortable that this is not a credible threat abc7ny. david and michelle. thanks a lot. york. police say thieves robbed an armored car in the bronx. shots were fired in the robbery. a man in a suit was seen fleeing with cash estimated to be more than $75,000. police are looking for a red vehicle. we have a crew on the way to the scene and we'll update you as soon as we have more information. a shocking turn of events followed an elderly woman's death in brooklyn. >> she lived at a senior citizen's high-rise in brownsville. her death ruled as a result of natural causes but a worker at a funeral home found a stab wound on the woman's body. >> eyewitness news reporter sandra bookman is live in brownsville right now. sandra. >> reporter: michelle and david, police certainly have a murder mystery on their hands here at the woodson houses. they are trying to figure out right now who killed 82-year- old myrtle mckenny. now, as you mentioned, it was body was found in her sixth floor apartment. at the time her death ruled death by natural causes due to some existing medical conditions, but recently just over the weekend, that funeral director was preparing her body to be em balmed when he noticed stab wounds. one of those stab wounds in the neck. he notified authorities and the m. e. later ruled her death a homicide. to say neighbors here at the woodson houses are stunned by this turn of events would be an understatement. . >> situation like that's startling you know, it's a shock for this building. >> very nice, very nice lady. she always speak to me when she would come out with her walker. very nice. >> reporter: again, folks living here tell me they're certainly stunned by a killing right in their backyard, but police, of course, now trying to backtrack. they're going over that apartment with a fine tooth comb trying to figure out who killed this woman and why. we will of course have the very latest on the investigation later today on eyewitness news. for now we're live in the brownsville section of brooklyn. i'm sandra bookman channel 7 eyewitness news. we want to get back to that breaking news we just told you about moments ago, involved gunfire, thousands of dollars stolen from an armored vehicle in the bronx. >> the search is on for a well- dressed thief. lucy yang just got to the scene. lucy. >> reporter: that's right. police right now are looking for a potentially well-dressed armed robber. we're told a man in a suit held short while ago. we believe that white vehicle is the truck in question. it happened around 10:00 this morning here in the 1400 block of westchester avenue here in of the bronx. police report he made off with $78,000 in cash. shots were fired. it's not clear if the suspect was hit. police are canvassing nearby hospitals for any potential gunshot injuries. detectives believe the getaway vehicle may be a red honda. again, we have an armed robber on the run with $78,000 in cash. this after holding up an armored truck this morning. we will have more on this breaking story throughout the day. we're live in the bronx, i'm lucy yang for channel 7 eyewitness news. a 62-year-old woman was struck and killed by an mta bus. eleanora shulkina was hit while she was crossing 17th street last night. the bus was making a left turn when it struck the woman. she died at the hospital. people in the neighborhood say there is a lot of traffic in >> there's a train station very close by. east 17th street there's a lot of traffic especially after work. >> the bus driver remained at the scene and was questioned by police officers. the new york city council's transportation committee is meeting today on new hit and run legislation. mayor de blasio's vision zero traffic safety program has reduced fatalities. this new legislation would raise the penalties imposed against hit and run drivers. french prosecutors say two people have been arrested on suspicion of helping to provide guns to the man who attacked that kosher supermarket in paris in january. the attacker killed -- and separately a policewoman before dying in a shootout with police. prosecutors say the suspects are an accused arms trafficker and his partner. now to vote 2016, the spotlight shifts tonight as the republicans get ready to battle it out in las vegas. the stage, this as texas senator ted cruz is moving up in the polls taking some attention from donald trump who's still doing jersey, a man arrested and accused of touching teens while he was there to help feed the elderly. >> plus the army sergeant held captive by the taliban now facing a court martial and we'll hear from hotel on purpose and caught our attention. let's begin with a violent confrontation. it ends with an employee and a customer throwing hot coffee at each other. it began with a customer asking a worker at a tim horton's drive through to throw out his old cup of coffee. it gets complicated after that. wouldn't do it. the customer drove off. male employee tossed a hot cup of coffee while yelling racial slurs. customer came back. threw two more cups of coffee, spit at them. the customer spit back, tossed coffee at the worker. in the end the customer was charged with assault. hopefully the cops can figure out how this all started. a little anger management in oklahoma. a man plowed his pickup truck right through the lobby. why? because he was upset about his bill. the driver apparently exchanged words with hotel workers and he jumped into hiss truck, drove straight into the building there. it is, lucky nobody was seriously hurt. and finally texas interstate 45 in houston came to a standstill on sunday but for a good reason. some people got out of the car standing in traffic. they were helping a friend propose marriage to his girlfriend on the highway. why this spot, it's a favorite for its great view of the houston skyline. the stunt took about 35 seconds. houston police checking to see if any complaints were made. i'm all for romance but really that's like the worst details about a deadly hit and run crash involving a this is breaking news from channel 7 eyewitness news. we continue to follow breaking news. all los angeles public schools are closed today following an e- mailed threat. we just learned that an ip address linked to the e-mail threat came from frankfort germany, and it was sent to an l. a. school board member. the schools were closed out of an abundance of caution. >> some of the details talked about backpacks, talked about other packages. i made a decision to close all of the schools. >> authorities plan to search all school buildings by the end of the day. i'm michelle charlesworth in for shirleen allicot. >> i'm david novarro. hello again. as we told you earlier new york city officials received the investigators considered it a hoax and all schools here in the five boroughs remain open. >> eyewitness news reporter n. j. burkett is live outside the department of education headquarters right now. n. j., good afternoon. >> good afternoon michelle. outside the department of education where, yes, school officials are working quickly to reassure parents, teachers and students here in new york city that there is no credible threat, that there is therefore, absolutely nothing to worry about. the nypd as you know, michelle has extraordinary resources to track them down, and determine how much concern they ought to have ability them. this is an e-mail that originated overseas in frankfort germany and was directed at a number of municipalities we're told. it was a generalized threat, something that's been described as amateurish and most certainly a hoax. nypd apparently dismissed this very quickly. mayor discussed all of this a few minutes ago. >> nypd has thoroughly assessed the threats that were made including towards our school system, although the threat in that sense is not credible, based on the information we have this was a very generic piece of writing sent to a number of different places simultaneously and also written in a fashion that suggests it's not plausible, and we've come to the conclusion that we must continue to keep our school system open, very important. not to overreact in situations like this. >> now the investigation underway, it's an investigation into a hoax which we strongly believe that the e-mail that was received in new york city which was similar and almost the exactly the same as received in other locales, specifically los angeles, that credible terrorist threat. >> and now the statement just released from the department of education quote, we are working closely with the nypd and there is no reason for alarm. as always, the safety of our students and staff both in and around schools is our number one concern, and any extra needed security measures will be taken the statement just issued a short time ago. again, to be clear, the nypd is dismissing all of this as a hoax. they say there's absolutely no reason for anyone here in new york city to be concerned. live in lower manhattan, n. j. burkett channel 7 eyewitness news. >> thank you n. j. a new jersey man is accused of having sexual contact with more than a dozen teens. >> police arrested michael pritchard. they say he fondled 14 teens while volunteering at calvary temple. anthony johnson there with the details. we just got word from cal temple. they're telling us the man making -- the person that is the suspect in this case was not a member of the calvary temple but certainly the allegations against him at this point in time are considered to be very v unsettling. this all taking place the week before last. michael pritchard is accused of making contact in a sexual nature with a large group of teenage girls, 14 of them who had volunteered to help feed senior citizens during a special holiday season event. authorities haven't said if pritchard tried to abuse the girls individually or when some or all of them were all together. the incident took place mainly in the kitchen at the calvary temple on december 6th questions remain whether the 35 suspect was able to sexually they were trying to be helpful to a group of senior citizens. the suspect charged with 14 counts of endangering the welfare of a child and 14 counts of engaging in sexual conduct. if pritchard is found guilty he could face five years behind bars for each victim and for endangering 18 months for a contact. $20,000. this case is now going before a grand jury. that is the latest live from wayne new jersey, anthony johnson channel 7 eyewitness news. thank you so much. police in newark meantime have identified the tractor-trailer driver responsible for a deadly hit and run crash. investigators say a 43-year-old man from newark was behind the wheel of a big rig that fatally struck a pedestrian. 48-year-old richard william holts was hit around 5:00 last night. a scaffolding overnight. it happened at the 125-year-old mills house number one on bleaker street. the building used to be the club. this morning. no one was hurt but the time. the number of sex crimes reported on new york city investigators say there were 669 sex crimes reported between january and november of this year. that is 100 more than last year. the most common crimes groping, public lewdness and unwanted surveillance, but the nypd says the higher numbers are in part because riders are more serious about taking pictures of the incidents and reporting them. police want your help catching a robber who beat up an 81-year-old man in brooklyn. here's a picture of the person police are looking for. the attack happened earlier this month. the mugger walked up behind the and stole the man's wallet. the victim is expected to be okay. a long island woman is accused of taking a page of the grinch's playbook and stealing some holiday cheer. police say surveillance video shows 31-year-old tiffany fisher plucking light up lollipops from a lawn in island park. the home is just a few blocks away from her own. investigators tracked down fisher but the homeowner says he just wants to know why his neighbor would steal his family's decorations. >> there's little children involved with christmas, you know, they don't think of the consequences of now as a parent i have four girls that i have to explain to my children what happened here. >> good point. another holiday thief was caught on camera in nassau county. a family in massapequa is hoping once again to see an inflatable penguin that was stolen from their home's front yard over the weekend. those stories. it's like stealing this evening into tonight. the winds die down tonight. we'll have this high pressure ridge sliding over us, and that's when the winds will start to calm down. but friday into saturday cold air starts to dominate for the weekend. we get a shot of cold air in here. then as we get to next week the jet stream rides back to the into some near record warmth again next week headed toward christmas. this weekend a chilly weekend, it will feel like the 30s on saturday and sunday but it warms back up starting monday. 60 this afternoon, less wind, kind of chilly tonight, 45. it will be a great late fall evening, and then tomorrow we've got sunshine. it's calmer we've got rain on thursday starting around midday lunchtime through the nighttime. front moves through. there might be a shower friday morning, and then it gets cooler in the afternoon and there's that chilly weather for saturday. it feels like the 30s. that's going to be about a 30 to 40-degree temperature swinging to the cold side. threat sent to school officials in both new york and los angeles. the threat came in the form of a generic e-mail sent from germany. this is what we know so far. out of an abundance of caution
