crossfire. >> caval haylett shot last night and tonight dying in the hospital, he and another teen street. >> eyewitness news reporter carolina leid live with the story in the city >> reporter: well, a role model and hard worker is just a couple ways people in the community describe this young man saying that he had just so much potential. coaches say. he was a standout basketball player with plenty of college prospects. haylett died this afternoon after being shot last night on his way home from a game. the standout athlete was with a group of people. several shots were fired and he was hit. police say the student athlete was not the intended target, but the people he was with were. >> friends of these people shooting each other, they have to stop it. we're going to do what we can responsible. high school student just wrapped up playing in the county's exceptional seniors game. he scored 21 points. just before the shooting haylett posted this tweet showing the trophy he earned and saying, "look what god blessed me with." and another 18-year-old young man was shot in the arm. he was treated and released from the hospital. right now as you heard, police are still looking for the suspects. i'm carolina leid, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> thank you. firefighters spending more than an hour tonight searching for possible victims after a report of a building collapse in brooklyn, but it turns out the call was just a hoax. police say someone called 911 claiming there was a collapse at a building in bed-stuy. because the building was under construction it immediately clear a collapse treated for minor injuries. it's not known how they are hurt. police are investigating. we're hearing from the husband of the latest slashing victim in new york city, a random attack in brooklyn, the victim slashed on her neck, surveillance video of the suspect, the husband tonight with his wife in the hospital talking about the vicious attack with eyewitness news reporter josh einiger at the scene in ditmas park. >> reporter: this victim is terrified. she is very startled right now recovering at the hospital after she was walking right here on this sidewalk when with no warning, with no provocation a man came up behind her and slashed her across the neck. >> you never think it's going to happen to you. >> reporter: the victim's husband did not want to show us his face or tell us his name. you wouldn't either if your wife's attacker was still on the loose. >> she was visiting friend and walking alone and somebody slashed her. >> reporter: it was broad daylight on this quiet block of beverly road when police believe this man walked up behind the 53-year-old woman with no warning before running away down argyle road toward the center of ditmas park. he left behind two knives, an american flag bandanna he accused to cover his face and plenty of dna. >> it's always worse for us when we see. this we make arrests on a lot of these. he was carrying a back with him. we have some substantial evidence from that. >> reporter: investigators spent all day searching for evidence and surveillance video after this vicious attack a day after two people were slashed in nearby prospect park, police arresting this suspect today, just another pattern of disturbing unprovoked violence throughout the city. her husband is hoping someone recognizes this man before he attacks someone else. >> tried to find the people who are committing these acts and maybe things will be better. >> reporter: now the suspect in this case was wearing that light gray hooded sweatshirt and dark gray sweat pants. digital properties at abc7ny. the victim is recovering tonight in the hospital and is recovery. eyewitness news. >> josh, thank you. also in brooklyn police looking for the gunman who shot two teen-agers in the crown heights section. the victims are a 14-year-old girl and 18-year-old man. other. both were taken to the hospital and are expected to be okay. turning to the new jersey transit strike threat, both sides plan to resume talks tomorrow, but today's negotiations ended on a sour note. the nation's third largest commuter railroad is making it clear to workers if they strike, existing positions and sick leave compensation will be suspended and insurance benefits discontinued. the union is not reacting well to that notice. >> new jersey transit's notice to the coalition members represents retaliatory action and ma parameter of the co -- harassment of the coalition members. has to put its shoulder here into the effort and be serious about coming to a contract negotiation and averting the strike. >> the clock is ticking. more than 4,000 rail workers authorized the strike to begin at 12:01 a.m. on sunday. now to vote 2016 and tonight the 12th republican presidential candidates debate. a fascinating thing happened in this one in miami florida. gone for the most part was the yelling and 7th grade playground bullying, finally [ applause ] >> reporter: which doesn't mean it was, you know, a tea party. mr. trump was reminded that he said yesterday muslims hate america. >> did you mean all 1.6 billion muslims? >> i mean a lot of them. i mean a lot of them. you can say what you want and you can be politically correct if you want. i don't want to be so politically correct. i like to solve problems. we have a serious, serious problem of hate. politically correct. i'm interested in being correct. i know a lot of people find appeal in the things donald says because he says the things people wish they could say. the problem is the president can't just say anything he wants. >> reporter: there was some difference shown among the candidates on israel. >> donald has said he wants to be neutral between israel and the palestinians. as president i will not be neutral. >> there is nobody on this stage that's more pro israel than i am. i was the grand marshal not so long ago of the israeli day parade. >> reporter: everyone on the stage needed a big night. none had one. best line of the night after trump raised concerns about cuba suing the u.s. >> i don't know whether cuba will sue us, but if they sue us in a court of miami, they're going to lose. >> reporter: with the civil tomorrow tonight, viewers heard a lot on trade policy and the middle east. there were distinctions that might help voters decide for a couple candidates it might also mark the end of this often untidy affair. >> thank you. funeral services will be held tomorrow in california for former first lady nancy reagan. public viewing of mrs. reagan's casket continued for a second day today inside the ronald reagan presidential library in simi valley. their two children patty davis and ron prescott reagan will speak at the funeral and at www.abc7ny.com. work crews in brooklyn tonight repairing a ruptured pipeline that carries jet fuel to laguardia, kennedy and newark airports, newscopter 7 over the scene in east new york as firefighters worked to plug the oil leak in the buckeye pipeline. emergency crews were alerted to smelled a strong odor of gas. the port authority blaming the suddenly warm weather and jet blast from engines for last night's runway problem at laguardia that caused huge delays and cancellations. an 8-foot chunk of coating that protects the runway broke apart. the port authority said the runway was inspected about 30 minutes before a pilot reported the debris. a multimillion dollar plan to make one of the city's dangerous nitro complexes safer is now complete. a new light system has been installed in harlem with entrances and walkways lit with 341 state of the art energy efficient light fixtures, all part of the mayor's action plan for neighborhood safety. it's an initiative to increase security and reduce crime at the 15 nitro complexes with the highest crime rates. >> because there's really nothing more that strikes me as an inequity is not to have all new yorkers live in family. he spent 25 years in prison for a murder he did not commit, but tonight andre hatchet after spending half his life in a cell is finally a free man, his quick overturned. the 49-year-old -- conviction overturned. the 49-year-old was released today after prosecutors admitted he should not have been convicted for the beating and murder of a woman in brooklyn in 1991. all these years he maintained his innocence. >> i knew i didn't do it. i knew i'd be home one day. i just want to be with my family and go eat. >> happy for him. the only witness in the case initially identified another man as the killer and admitted he was smoking crack the day of the murder. hosting a state dinner for canada's prime minister tonight for the first time in nearly 20 years. president obama and the first lady welcomed the new canadian prime minister, justin trudeau and his wife, to the white house this evening. more than 170 guests attended the glitzy state dinner, among them canadians michael j. fox and ryan reynolds. speaking of the white house, it's hoping to help some families afford a basic necessity for their children. the obama administration is launching a new program to make diapers 25% cheaper for low income families. right now diapers are not covered by federal assistance programs. the white house says jeffs.com, cue tizz diapers and several nonprofits are -- cuties become more widespread after midnight. it's very light and then pushes offshore toward dawn. we have more clouds off to the east of dawn and more breaks to the north. in a couple hours we all have sunshine. rainfall amounts very light, .1, maybe 1/4 inch north and west, very light down the shore, we start out at 50 tomorrow in newburgh, 43 monticello, 53 islip, lower 60s in the afternoon. dress
