a violent night, bullets fly, four people shot and right now the shooter is on the loose. good evening at 11:00. i'm bill ritter. >> and i'm sade baderinwa. cops are on the scene trying to piece this all together. the gunfire ringing out late tonight in newark on springfield avenue and irvine turner boulevard. >> josh einiger live at the scene. >> let me show you what's going on back there as investigators start to crawl over this scene. cataloging it for clues and searching among other things for shell casings. i'll show you video we shot in the last couple minutes after we first arrived here at this housing project off at around 9:30 we are told there were multiple gunshots. four people shot. fortunately non-life-threatening injuries. one eyewitness told eyewitness news on the phone he heard as many as nine or ten shots and coming back to a live picture from our camera, you can see as officers with flashlights search this parking lot for evidence that they can find that can link them to the shooter or shooters in this case. we have been told they've not recovered a weapon on the scene and the four people who were shot, it's not clear right now if they were intended targets or innocent bystanders or a combination of the two. all of them taken hospitals where we're told their life-threatening. as the search for the shooters and to why this happened in the first place gets underway. josh einiger, channel 7 eyewitness news. happening right now in long island, crews are working to clear the wreckage of a freight train derailment. regular service has resumed but clearing this mess could take all night. the two-car derailment happened this afternoon, putting one the lirr cars out of service, triggering extensive delays. an act of unilateral violence. a player ripping off the helmet of a player, and using it to hit that player in the face. cops are investigating. it happened in the union county city of linden. aj ross is there with the latest. >> no question, this gridiron clash between immac i'll oughta tem -- item -- immaculata. tempers flared and flags were quickly thrown between the showdown friday night when a dead play at the line of scrimmage led to this vicious unprotected blow to the head. watch as number 73 and 21 get tangled up with the play. his helmet is ripped off by the linden player who swings and strikes him across the head. although the linden player was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct, he wasn't ejected from the game, and now school officials are requesting he receive the maximum punishment. the player received 10 stitches. since the team's dirty play, immaculata members have reached out to the union county prosecutor's office along with state athletic officials. linden police confirmed they're investigating the incident but say so far no charges have been filed. >> things like that happen. it's a brake -- breakdown. any team player that does that should be automatically taken off. >> linden public schools released the following statement, saying, quote, the linden public school district is taking this very seriously, and by no means is this incident a reflection of our school community or athletic teams. live tonight in linden, new jersey, aj ross, channel 7 eyewitness news. a blockbuster disclosure tonight for the man a new york cop was supposedly looking for when he mistakenly and violently took down former tennis pro james blake. sean satha talking to us via skype from australia, says he was not in new york at all last week. he was in australia. and he says the photo the nypd had of him was originally posted online by his brother. >> actually my name is pretty clearly tagged with the original photo. could have been avoided if someone spent 10 minutes researching google prior to the school plan tomorrow. we've learned part of the plan is to have computer science available to all students in the next 10 years. the mayor wants to bring advanced placement classes to all of the city's 400 high schools for the first time. estimated cost, $51 million a year. for the younger grades, increased emphasis on reading in the 2nd grade, plans to hire 700 new reading teachers. annual costs, $75 million. >> only 30% of our kids were reading at grade level by 3rd grade. we weren't in the right place. so we have to do something different. we can't tell our kids you're college bound and not show them we're investing in them by giving them the kind of courses that will help get them there. >> the mayor will make his announcement tomorrow. unprecedented security expected during pope francis's visit to the u.s. tonight we're learning new details about an alleged security threat and arrest connected to the papal visit. the fbi says it arrested a 15-year-old boy from camden county, new jersey. they say he was talking about attacking the pontiff during his visit to philadelphia with an isis inspired assault using explosives and firearms. >> this is not something people should be alarmed about. my definition of what would be credible, something that could be operational, something that is about to take place, that sort of thing, and unless i'm missing something, i california now dealing with the aftermath of record breaking rains. much of los angeles county was inundated today with more than 2 inches of rain. a camera was rolling when a man and his dog were rescued by firefighters from the swollen los angeles river. a heartbreaking homecoming for thousands of people returning to their charred remains of their community scorched by wildfire. up to 700 homes have been destroyed by two massive fires in northern california. a 72-year-old woman was killed when flames engulfed her home in middletown. straight ahead on eyewitness news at 11:00, caught in the driver said he was making a routine trash pickup in flatbush today when the weight of the truck caused the wheels to poke a hole in the parking garage. talk about feeling helpless. a homeowner watches two thieves break in to his apartment on his cell phone but he did more than just watch. now cops releasing the surveillance video hoping someone can help identify the crooks that they say may be involved with other burglaries in the area. here's jim dolan. >> that's him coming through the kitchen window. >> reporter: danny wheeler was at work when an app on his phone called canary alerted him there was someone in his apartment. when he opened the app up he saw a man roaming around, first going in to his bedroom and then moments later walking over to a living room window, moving aside plants and nicknacks to eventually let a second man in the apartment. sitting at work watching it all, wheeler was furious. >> i'm just really, really angry. i can't believe this is happening in my apartment right now. i'm not there and somebody is trying to break in to my house and steal my stuff. that just makes my blood boil over. >> reporter: he called 911 but the real hero of this story is shamus. >> i saw the guy going through the window. >> reporter: he was in the back of the building and spotted the second guy going through the window. he called out for him. >> i said hey, what are you doing? he continues through the window and i said hey again. >> reporter: that scared the man enough to run. on the surveillance video you can see the first guy heads to the front door and the second goes right through the same window he came in. in the meantime, wheeler had sent screen grabs to the police. >> by the time i got here there were helicopters up and 30 cops roaming, looking around the area. >> reporter: take a look again at the two men. police say they have been involved in other burglaries in the neighborhood and they'd sure like any help they can get identifying them. mr. wheeler said he never used that app before. never had any reason to. the two men didn't get very much because mr. mcdade scared them away. jim dolan, channel 7 eyewitness news. new at 11:00, a desperate search tonight for a u.s. veteran's therapy dog that disappeared in harlem. 45-year-old james pardellas says his dog, precious, a 19-year-old chihuahua, was tied to a fence friday when someone took her. pardellas who suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder has placed fliers around harlem. >> i haven't slept. just looking for this dog since friday. you see posters of dogs that are missing all the time in this area and you never think it will happen to you and it happened to me. >> turns out pardellas' brother forgot he tied the dog outside the store. someone possibly thought she was abandoned. lots of questions about tomorrow's commute after a derailment on the lirr tracks in nassau county. let's take a live look at westbury where crews are working right now. normal service has resumed with some residual delays but the cleanup as you can imagine could take all night. they've got to upright that train there. >> there is good news. there was no people. it
