Thank you students and thank you appointments to the committee by the Board Members one from the Community Advisory committee for special education and have the representatives come up. Hi, im katie the chair felt Advisory Committee for special ed and this is joan on the executive committee the executive board for generations i think were here to do a short recap of what is coming up for this year and kind of tying it into what we presented at the end of last year in terms of some of the issues that we were 90s workplace special ed so joan will take it away good evening superintendant guerrero and members im joan as katie russel mentions well do a recap of what our last report to you on june 28 of this year. What is the cac the cac the state Education Code mandate that each special education local planned area as sever fiduciary needed a Advisory Committee the cac the purpose of cac to advocate for special Education Programs and services and advice the board of education on the excelsior requires a majority of cac members be parents. Were going to skip this one our cac Guiding Principles if the last june report im doing a quick overview 70 percent are served in general education parents are an International Part of every single i e p team meaning individualized Education Program the i stand for the individual so areas of focus for 20162017 were monitoring staff levels of vacancies at all conditional sites, monitoring special education departments prelims of new protocol for faith meaning free Public Education implementation of con planning at all schools, broadening of candidate bias consideration for students with i e p and approved ac services and support were also continuing on the area of focus implementation of evidence based 3 reading for inclusion and placement the development for other writing disabilities for inclusion and class placement and timely innocenceness for transmission of services and katie will take over. To support those points of focus this year we have split out our meeting topics and first of all, we invite all interested families in coming and advice the commissioners and invite the school staff particularly teachers and the last two meetings had happened in august 7th level and Staff Professional Development ill talk about Staffing Levels shortly i want to thank the people that who arranged for the budget we had there was quite a few of the of Staff Development over the summer i really appreciated the parented and im sure the staff appreciated 2 far more than in the past september we had a meeting on the protocol for intensive services and the protocols are new and they were extremely well presented to the families therapy you know there was a lot of port for it so if any parents that wanted information information on it ask their whoever is leading on the i e p team for the new protocol that will be rolling out as people request the protocols will be rolling out the purpose of protocols to have Fair Distribution appropriate direction not only for the parents with the lawyers and the people that are squeaking wheels but the whole community were encouraged by this protocol in october coming up were having candidates site for did you San FranciscoUnified School District board of education and the majority of candidates are coming theres. Few i havent heard from by the way, a few people maybe in the room ill be contacting you again i know but in november were doing a presentation by the school on issues of their preefshg in regards to special ed we have the administration you know the topheavy present but we want to hear how the units and teachers view the special education particularly in light thought how were trying to have the bulk of the special ed kids and if thats presenting issues or something we can workout together in december we dont have a meeting that makes everyone happy at the cac in january we have another new program you know the sdruths has been working hard with new initiative the dispute resolution in conjunction with San FranciscoBar Association and the special ed for the San FranciscoUnified School District and in which case a volunteer lawyers oracles as a third party neutral party to work on some of the issues that come up with families in regards to their i e p and the meeting the needs of the students and also getting you know hitting the points on the i f p anyway we are hoping that we will this will result in less lawsuits and result in happier families i do know where we work we use the tentative dispute resolutions it is very successful and the lawyers are very encouraged the skblth is it doing that in february were talking about an update in pilot tier 3 intervention and assisted technology for students with 45 owe 4 programs in march the Transmission Services with students of i e p and the timeliness of the transmission in april were going to do a program on the candidate bias and education that has an issue with communities where the feeling about special ed it is a place you send the inner rule kids a place you send those unlaw school kids theyll not be educated, of course not the purpose 6 special ed and the district historically theres been suspicion of the special ed programs but the idea is for us to really like discuss that openly and honestly and in may were having an unanimous advocacy worthy of excellency and we have not invited him yet but ask the superintendent to give a state of the union and in june and mini fair with different speakers that will come and talk about what is available to families okay our meetings are at one six 63 Mission Street 7 floor again families are invited we have childcare and interpretation please call ahead of time starts at the 5 30 and 6 30 if you have a specific program 6 30 to 8 regular meeting of with specific topics we encourage people to come we have a lot of good information okay. Now we have a pop quiz it is the question how many parents and teaches and related providers positions are currently open in the special Ed Department anyone want to venture a guess. Or even a word a what. Ill guess lots. Youre right i got is this is september 23rd now ill say it was a lot a lot a lot at the beginning of the school year and the Human Resources department has done a great job i heard them on the radio trying to recruit people im not people people down but a constitutional right with you know educators and special ed and 2, 3, 4 particularly as of september 23 september 23rd uncertified teachers we have 18 out of the Central Office we have like 8 positions im talking about positions for long term and one for middle school and one high school i think that is the Central Offices is suffering and as far as paraprofessionals their divided throughout the variance pre k and high school and others so with gets me to the next slide as of 5 oclock gosh if youre listening you havent signed this bill he did im not going to im going to this is one of the piece of the puzzle to get housing for teachers now make sure it happens very good gosh, i want to announce a couple of things a coming to fruition at the same time the survey will surveying families with i e p it is disgusted they were anonymous theyre starting the rollout the special Ed Department can get feedback from families and my friend here she mentioned something that friday the place we have the meeting support for families a fantastic 501 does so much with families with disables and offer the Services Free having a demo thats great but honoring the cac as recipient we must be doing a good enough job were thrilled and lastly this was a couple of parents asked me to put this on first, i got a hoe hum learning the sdranlt Ronald Reagan find the awareness and dyslexia the budget of kids that have i e p reading and writing problems and math problems that one executive functioning difficulties and ah d and adults too by the way, i know a lot of these conditions are hereditary if you see it in your kids theres a chance you have that a. D. D and it is something i limitations to yesterday just yesterday for my own state of michigan theyre doing terribly in michigan with early reading their status are down and a huge program they talked an hour and talked about 24 and this this they and never mentioned the word dyslexia and kids that need you know interchanges but any kid that cant read at grade level that will be held back im i have to tell you if youre teaching a kid in a way not progressing you, you can teach them this kid maybe has dyslexia thats 20 percent of the population and send them back to school and using the same methodology and the kid feels their stupid this is the the reason there has to be Awareness Month base st
