this is "way too early." this is my second job. i'm glad you're up with me this morning watching on msnbc or listening live or sirius. shoot us an e-mail or send us a tweet and let us know why you are awake right now or you can do it what louie does and text the word awake followed by your response to 622639. get louder, guys. we'll read the best responses later in the show. the next 30 minutes will be your cram session for this monday, april 9th. there's a lot going on today, including north korea preparing a long range rocket test that had the entire region on high alert. plus a night with the boss. bruce springstein comes to madison square garden and gives the crowd a show to remember. even momma springstein gets involved. let's get to the news live here at 5:30 a.m. here at 30 rock in new york city. the broadcasting world has lost a legend. mike wallace known for his tough, abrasive questioning died at a care facility on saturday night surrounded by his family. throughout his 60 year career, he was at the forefront. whether he was pressing world lead deers or scolding celebrities, he perfected the art of the interview. his style mixed extensive research with a fair share of skepticism. although wallace was an early champion of the ambush interview, he later said the best information was oaks posed one on one. wallace started his career in radio as an announcer when television emerged in the 1950s he hit the air waives starring in commercials and game shows. his first stint in news came at the local level in new york. new york show called "night beat." it was his hard charging interview style that got him to launch 60 minutes in 1968. a token that would define journalism for generations. he won 21 emmy awards, 5 dupont columbia journalism awards and five pea body awards. mike wallace didn't hold back for anyone. during the iranian hostage crisis in 1979 he asked the ayatolah to respond to questions that he was crazy. >> president sadat of egypt, a devoutly religious man, a mus m muslim, says that what you are doing now is, quote, a disgrace to islam, and he calls you, imam, forgive me, his words, not mine, a lunatic. >> translator: sadat states he is a muslim and we are not. he is not for he compromises with the enemies of islam so that has united with our enemies. wallace was close friends with ronald and nancy reagan. he admitted he had to be extra tough on them in interviews. >> how many blacks are there on your top campaign staff government? >> never. >> and never anna bol lick steroid? >> never. >> swear? >> swear. >> wallace retired from public life in 2008 after undergoing triple bypass surgery. he is survived by his wife, son, two stepchildren. mike wallace was 93 years old born one year after j.f.k. now to politics where a growing number of republicans now say the question is becoming not if but when mitt romney will lock up the party's nomination. romney currently leads his fellow candidates with a total of 573 delegates. that's 361 more than his closest competitor, rick santorum. and a recent poll by the ap shows the republican super delegates are slowly coming around and supporting the former massachusetts governor. romney has 35 super delegate endorsements, far more than any other candidate in 11 since super tuesday. after spending the better part of the campaign calling romney, quote, a massachusetts moderate, it now appears newt gingrich is joining husband party leaders and accepting romney as the nominee in waiting. >> i think you have to be realistic given the size of his organization, given the number of primaries he's won. he is far and away the most likely republican nominee. and if he does get to 1144 delegates, i'll support him. i'll do everything i can to help him defeat obama. the primary goal of the entire republican party has to be -- i mean, this is the most important election in some ways since 1860. barack obama's a genuine radical and if he gets re-elected with this economy and these gas prices and this deficit, who knows what he'd do in a second term? >> ah, the great newt awakening. the most important election since the civil war and mitt romney might just possibly be the man to lead his party to the promised land. gingrich also responded to a report that he was $4.5 million in debt. without giving a number the former house speaker acknowledged his campaign owed much more than he had ever expected. rick santorum, meanwhile, will be off the campaign trail today to care for his young daughter bella who was hospitalized late last week. looking forward, the former senator has a light day planned. they battle for pennsylvania, santorum's home state. the romney campaign and its super pac allies see april 24th, the primaries on that day, a as the potential game changer. they're expected to spend up to $2.9 million in pennsylvania in an effort to knock the other competitors out of the race once and for all. in other news, chuck grasser took to twitter to attack president obama's remarks last week about the supreme court's, quote, judicial activism. grassy treated, constituents asked why i am not outraged at president obama's attack on supreme court independence because american people are not as stupid as their ex-professor of constitutional law who is their president. interesting spelling there by chuck grassly. he is a proon the twitter. even tweets from his tractor in iowa. david ak axlerod was not impressed. >> i think a 6-year-old hijacked your account sending out foolish tweets to embarrass you. >> he says the use of the word stupid was his own. he spoke about his tweeting style spelling errors and all. he told the legal times that his iphone is partly to blame. there are a couple of factors involved. a lot of it has to do with the automatic correcting done by my iphone. i love tweeting but i don't like to type so i probably type and hit and send it out just a little too quickly. overseas some of the final preparations are underway in north korea, ahead of a planned rocket launch. the regime says it's for scientific research but with the country's history of nuclear activity, it's raising new tensions in the region. in a rare move. >> north korean officials, get this, allowed reporters to look at the test site. the launch will coincide with the 100th birthday of kim il sung. his grandson is in charge. south korean officials say satellite images suggest the north is also preparing for a third nuclear test in what can be another show of force. still ahead on "way too early", the masters living up to its reputation as one of the greatest events in sports. coming down to a sudden death overtime and ending with a tearful winner. we'll show you the full highlights next. plus, up is down. left is right. cats and dogs living together. the red sox and yankees are winless and the mets are undefeated. socks and yankees go 0-3 for the first time since 1966. down the twilight zone that is major league baseball and a check on weather when "way too early" comes back. where else would you rather be at this hour in the morning? to baseball now where the red sox were trying to avoid a sweep in detroit. top of the 11th, boston already up a run when dust tin singles in a run. they're looking like they might get their first win of the season but in the bottom of the inning, bullpen whoas strike again for boston. alex sneaks it over the wall for a walk off homer and the red sox are still hunting for that first "w." with the red sox going down, how would the winless yankees respond. carlos pena gets all of the fill hughes and sends it deep, deep, gone. rays go up 2-0. raoul grounds out to end it. it will leave the yankees to start the season 0-3. in an early season surprise the red sox and the yankees find themselves in the cellar being with those mighty orioles. the devil rays are topping the division. they'll face off against the orioles tonight and i ses s suspect they'll get a win. the mets are a surprising 3-0 after a surprising sweep of the braves. with 1 a 59 games to go the mets remain undefeated. miami marlins manager ozzie apologized for comments he made about cuban leader fidel castro. he lives in the part of my a.m. any known as little havana said in part in the article, i love fidel cast throw. i respect fidel castro. you know why?
