Well start with the news. It all comes down to this, decision day 2020, donald trump versus joe biden. Nbc news data shows nearly 97 Million People have already voted. About 71 of the total vote that was cast in 2016. And of course, millions more are expected to vote today in an election thats been marred by the covid pandemic. As for the candidates, the Biden Campaign will make a final push in states that trump won in 2016. Biden will hold events in his hometown of scranton and in philadelphia, while Kamala Harris makes a stop in detroit. Their spouses also on the trail for the final push. Dr. Jill biden travels to tampa and st. Petersburg, florida, and wake county, North Carolina, while senator harris husband, doug emhoff, will appear in columbus, ohio. Meanwhile, President Trump told reporters last night he expects to travel to his campaigns headquarters in virginia later on this morning. And two sources familiar with the planning say hell hold an Election Night party for 400 guests in the white house east room. Were told testing will be required, but theres no word yet on whether people are going to have to wear masks at this event. Joining us now live from wilmington, delaware, nbc news political reporter ali vitali. Ali, good morning to you. Thrilled to have you with us on this incredibly big day. You have really been on the trail with President Trump from start to finish in what, you know, we all remember was an incredibly improbable run from the primary in 2015 to the nomination and then to the white house. And america has been watching the trump show for the last four years. And in the last eight months, weve been grappling with the deadliest pandemic in history. Put this in perspective for us, as someone who has really followed this man and this politician for the entirety, basically, of his political career. Reporter kasie, i think that the way i think about this election, frankly, because i was on the road with trump from 2015 and then, of course, covering politics straight through these last five years, is this is an election that feels like its been coming for five years. 2016 was one of those moments that trump managed to thread the needle in ways that every political onlooker really was stunned by, even the ones who thought he had a chance to do it. And so, i think that thats the vibe that im picking up right now as i talk to my republican sources and those people still in and around the trump campaign, is they know that theyve caught lightning in a bottle once in 2016. The question, though, is if they can do it again. And when you look at the ways that they think that they can get there, theyre looking to preserve places like florida, that they won in 2016, looking to preserve places like pennsylvania, hoping that they can still make inroads in the parts of the blue wall that they crumbled, and that, frankly, kasie, democrats have invested in, in order to try to rebuild that blue wall, because they saw what happened in 2016. And so, when i think about republicans, theyre bullish on the idea of inperson early voting only helping them, but then if i think about the people who i cover every day now on the democratic side, the Biden Campaign has this cautious optimism around them, where theyre being clear, they think they have multiple paths to victory as opposed to trump having to thread the needle. Theyre looking at a bunch of different paths that they can get to 270. And i know that trump is getting bogged down a lot, and this isnt surprising, as someone whos covered him for a long time, as you have. Hes trying to get into the idea of the way the system could be rigged against him. He loves to lay these traps just in case, ahead of time. Democrats are not necessarily engaging theyre there in court or to but at the same time, theyre trying to say that they think that every vote should be counted. I dont necessarily even take that as partisan spin. You know this, elections in this country, just because we project it on Election Night doesnt mean that ballots arent still being counted after. And so, both sides clearly trying to say that they have a path. But democrats, again, making sure, they want every ballot counted, even after Election Night, because again, thats just the way that elections work in this country. All right. First in pennsylvania, the latest Monmouth University poll shows biden leading by seven, 51 44 . The nbc News Marist College poll has biden up by five, 51 46 . In florida, the latest quinnipiac poll shows biden with a fivepoint lead, 47 42 . The Reuters Ipsos poll has the former Vice President up by four, within the margin of error, 50 46 . In ohio, the latest quinnipiac poll shows biden ahead by four, 47 43 . In arizona, the latest Reuters Ipsos poll has biden with a twopoint advantage, within the margin of error, 49 47 . In the nbc News Marist College poll, the two are tied at 48 . And in North Carolina, the latest Reuters Ipsos poll shows the former Vice President up by one, within the margin of error, 49 48 . It is a close race in these swing states, folks. Meanwhile, the latest National Polls show biden maintaining a substantial lead over President Trump heading into election day. The quinnipiac University Poll shows biden ahead by 11, 50 39 , and Reuters Ipsos poll gives biden a sevenpoint advantage, 52 45 . We just ran through the battleground polls, which are incredibly close. The National Polling hasnt really been close for a long time. And while that means, i think, were all going to be biting our nails through the poll closings and potentially late into the night tonight on the president ial race, if those National Numbers hold, republicans are going to have a tough time, particularly holding on to the senate. How do you see the landscape heading into tonight . Well, listen, the house of representatives republicans are going to become deeper into the minority. Theres no question about that. They could lose between 5 and 20 seats, which would plunge them, you know, almost to 2008 levels, when barack obama won the white house. Thats number one. Number two, i mean, kasie, you and i know this well, they face an increasingly perilous path to keeping the senate. Republicans think theyve lost arizona. They think theyve lost colorado. And then they believe maine could be gone. They believe one seat in georgia, iowa, North Carolina. So, theres just a lot of paths on capitol hill for republicans to lose the senate and democrats to take it. And on a president ial level, the democrats i was talking to yesterday believe that they could win georgia and North Carolina, which would make for, not an easy night, but certainly would clear the path. But again, you know, people are wrong. Weve seen that a million times. But ali put it really well, and you did, too, that theres just a million paths for joe biden not a million theres a significant number of paths for joe biden and decidedly fewer for President Trump. Right. President trump really playing defense. I mean, you can see that simply from the map of travel. Now, granted, biden does have to make sure that he keeps that blue he residence respects that blue wall, which theyve been working hard on. We havent talked too much about house races, but i know youve been digging into this and you tweeted, will the reckoning ever come for them. What are the key races youre watching on election day and the themes on that question . Im looking for a few things. Number one, the key races. I mean, they basically mirror the critical states. I mean, democrats are on the march in states like texas. They are looking to cut deeper into some of these shifting states like arizona. I mean, listen, heres the reality that republicans are going to have to contend with some tomorrow, because election day is a day. Political dynamics flourish for two years, and elections happen in a moment. But what will republicans takeaway be . Because theyre almost certainly likely to lose doubledigit seats today. Theres going to be two different camps. Theres going to be people who say even if trump loses, there will be people who say, we didnt stick close enough to the president , we didnt tie ourselves close enough to his conservative values. And then there will be people who say we need a reimagining of the Republican Party. We saw how that went in 2012. We saw the autopsy after mitt romney lost, and nothing really changed. So, do they just stay as this party thats reflective of donald trump, if he loses, or not . Thats going to be the big question that will drive congressional politics that you and i will be covering for the next two years. It will be driving it to a large extent, going up to a midterm election, which begins the day begins tomorrow, frankly. Thats exhausting. President ial elections, kasie, are fleeting, and governing is a much more lasting dynamic. Well, you know, i think the trick is going to be that the republicans that are left in washington are going to be some of the most protrump republicans in the party. The folks that are going to lose are going to be the ones who might say, hey, we should be learning lessons from this. So, i think thats going to make for some tricky dynamics. Good points all. Turning now to the action on the gridiron and the giants hosting the buccaneers on monday night football. To east rutherford, new jersey. New york facing a familiar foe, but in a different jersey, with Quarterback Tom Brady under center for tampa bay this season. The giants built a surprising early lead, but two interceptions thrown by qb daniel jones in the second half allowed brady and the bucs to rally from a 143 deficit and claim a 2523 victory. A federal judge in texas yesterday tossed out a lawsuit by republican activists seeking to invalidate 127,000 votes in harris county, cast at drivethru voting locations they thought were illegal. The judge found that they didnt have standing to sue. But he also found that while the States Election law allows drivethru voting, it doesnt allow it at moveable structures like the tents being used. Okay. With the electoral votes of texas in play this election, plaintiffs said theyll appeal to the Circuit Court level, hoping votes from the largely democratic county will ultimately remain uncounted. Harris county clerk Chris Hollins quickly moved to protection electionday votes by closing the tents. He announced on twitter monday evening that, in order to allow for drivethru voting on election day while ensuring that all votes will be counted, the only drivethru Voting Center on election day will be at toyota center, which is unquestionably a permanent structure. So, if youre voting today in harris county, it seems thats the place to do it. Michigan voters, meanwhile, can openly carry firearms at some polling places today after the Michigan Supreme Court didnt respond to a directive that would ban open carry near polling places. With voters set to head to the polls to choose the next president of the United States on this election day, yesterday, President Trump continued to bash the Supreme Courts decision to allow the tossup state of pennsylvania to count mailin ballots for the days after the polls close. Speaking from joe bidens hometown of scranton yesterday, trump also targeted the states democratic governor. And when the Supreme Court gave you an extension, they made a very dangerous situation, and i mean dangerous, physically dangerous, and they made it a very, very bad they did a very bad thing for this state. They did a very bad thing for this nation. You have to have a date. You cant extend dates. The danger that could be caused by that extension, and especially when you know what goes on in philadelphia, and its been going on for years. So, governor, open up your state, and please dont cheat, governor. Please, dont cheat. Because were all watching. Were all watching you, governor. Weve got a lot of we have a lot of eyes on the governor and his friends. More of that rhetoric. We are watching you. Trump later took to twitter to spread his, underscore, unfounded, unfounded claims, tweeting that the Supreme Courts decision would lead to violent unrest in the country. He wrote in part, the Supreme Court decision on voting in pennsylvania is a very dangerous one. It will allow rampant and unchecked cheating and will undermine our entire system of laws. It will also induce violence in the streets. Something must be done i think the question here is whether this tweet is actually potentially inducing the violence or not. The president s comments were promptly flagged as misleading by the social media company. President trump accused joe biden and former president obama of, quote, treason, just hours before polls open on election day. So, this is how were going to finish this out, folks. Amid chants of lock them up at a rally in michigan last night, trump slammed his opponents over the russia investigation and his subsequent impeachment. Remember that . We caught them spying on our campaign. We caught them trying to take out a duly elected president of the United States. Thats treason. Thats treason. We caught them. And, some day, maybe somethings going to be done about it, too, you know . Maybe. Boy, oh, boy, oh, boy, oh, boy. They cant we dont want to do anything prior to the election. Well, what about me . They did it to me before the they spied on my campaign before the election. We shouldnt do anything prior to the election. And you know who we caught . Barack Hussein Obama and sleepy joe biden. They were a part of it. We ought to get these reports out. They should get them out before the election, as far as im concerned. So, President Trump going to close out this campaign with misleading and unfounded claims about spying on his campaign in the 2016 election. Again, unfounded grievances, as we close this out. The Biden Campaign believes that there is no scenario, meanwhile, where President Trump will be declared the winner tonight. During a zoom briefing with reporters yesterday, bidens Campaign Manager addressed reports that President Trump may try to falsely claim victory before all the votes are in. Just because donald trump says something on Election Night or suggests he might be winning, that is not going to be based in fact. There is no way he will be outright winning on Election Night. At a rally in miami yesterday evening, former president obama also chided President Trump over the reports that he might declare victory prematurely. Hes been coddling dictators for the last four years. And now, apparently, he says he might declare victory before all the votes are counted tomorrow. Dont boo. Vote thats not something you want to hear in Little Havana or little haiti. Thats not something that a leader of a democracy does. Thats something a twobid dictator does. If you believe in democracy, you want every vote counted former president obama also reached out to disaffected black voters in atlanta yesterday, explaining that, even as president , he was sometimes disappointed by governments incremental progress. He then rested his final argument for voting on the actions of civil rights icon john lewis. Watch. I want to talk to you right now, the people of georgia, right now, who decided not to vote. Maybe you dont like whos in the white house right now, but you just lost faith in government. Youre frustrated. You dont think government makes a difference. I remember talking to john lewis right before he passed. And we talked about all these young people who would come out to start this wave of marches, nonviolent, peaceful protests all across the country. And we talked about how this younger generation, they dont have to choose between protest and politics. If were going to translate our aspirations into laws and practices, weve got to engage in both. John ran for office all those years and kept protesting even while he was in office, because he understood theyre two sides of the same coin. Its us acting on behalf of our highest aspirations, even though we know we wont get there. Were never going to get all the way to the promised land, but we can help lay the path for future generations to get there. Thats what Public Service should be about. Thats what citizenship should be about. Thats what voting is about. Just think about the contrasts there between what we just heard from President Trump and what youre hearing on the campaign trail from the former president obama. Thank you so much for getting up early. That fire looks very toasty, so, youre getting your morning started off right. Lets start with the type of voter that you represent. And you and i have talked many times over the years when i first started covering you. Yes. You were the chair of the New Hampshire Republican Party, a conservative, someone who supported republican candidates. And obviously, that has all changed in the era of trump. And i think yes. One of the Big Questions that we all have is, how many people are there out there who are like you, especially in a state like florida, where were seeing the party i. D. Numbers breakdown in these early vote numbers and we dont know how many people were maybe registered republican, havent bothered to change it, are actually going to vote for donald trump. Whats your sense . Right. First of all, thank you for having me. Its very cozy where im sitting right now. Good. But my sense is that were going to have a much higher percentage of republicans voting for joe biden than anticipated, and than was even our goal originally as the lincoln project. We have been going, following these numbers through the past year, and we figured, if we could move 3 or 4 of Republican Voters to joe biden, then donald trump would be defeated. And we saw some numbers came out late last week that suggested in early voting in some states, it could be as high as 12 or 13 of republicans who had already cast their votes saying that they voted for joe biden. So, if those numbers hold even at half that for sameday voting, then thats i mean, thats the game right there. And what message do you think republicans are going to take away from that, if, in fact, it happens . I mean, i dont want to get too ahead of ourselves, obviously, but at the same time, its hard not to think about, what does the Republican Party look like in a potential posttrump era, with especially the people that are going to be left in washington are likely to be very pro trump . Do you think its possible the party will learn from this, if, in fact, what youve just outlined happens . It would be nice if the party would learn from this, sure. But heres what i think about the party. And frankly, ive given it until very recently very little thought. When youre in a Campaign Like this, its an extraordinary thing for those of us within our party, trying to take down an incumbent president. But what i would say is, a Republican Party that does not fully denounce donald trump, fully acknowledge and denounce the role that they have played in the damage that they have brought on to this country and is unwilling to fully denounce things like racism, bigotry, misogyny, caging children and intentionally ignoring the consequences of a deadly pandemic that is a party that cannot survive in the United States of america. How that plays out, what that looks like, how long it takes, i dont know, but there is no role in our country for that kind of leadership. Quite a statement. And lets talk very briefly about the senate, to that question. How do you see this playing out in terms of you know, do you believe republicans are going to hold the senate . And if they dont, do you see them learning the lesson you just outlined . Well, i think that individual senators maybe are more likely to learn, but i think its going to be too late, frankly. I do think that the republicans are going to suffer some significant losses in the senate. And what they have to understand is that every single one of them who has sat there silent for the last four years, or worse, who has spoken up in defense of and to protect this president and the damage that hes done to our country, the lincoln projects not going to go away after this election cycle. You know, there are several of them on the ballot right now that, obviously, weve been targeting and weve been involved in their races. But more of them who are sitting there today will be on the ballot in two years, and more, two years after that. Anybody who has been part of this, of advancing what donald trump has done to our country has got to be held accountable by the voters. Held accountable voters. Wow. M. , political reporter for axios, hans nichols. Hans, good morning to you. Its election day, so im going to go with that as our 1 big thing. You have been covering the Biden Campaign in particular. Just talk to us a little bit about what you know as theyre heading in to this. How theyre looking at Election Night. I mean, i had some sources kind of walk me through it and it sounds like were looking at florida, georgia, North Carolina early on, and if one of those goes for biden and we can tell then that might be a champagne popping event for them, but they dont want to be overly optimistic. Theyre still nervous after what happened in 2016. What are they telling you . The big mac row picture is that the Biden Campaign thinks that the math is on their side and the Biden Campaign if the math is on their side you can expect to hear Vice President biden address the country tonight as the new leader. Theyll start making moves that look president ial. That will be potentially forming not necessarily a cabinet but letting aides know which positions theyll have in the white house so you can see some announcements like that and then whats really driving the entire push on this is the idea of what happened in 2000. That is when al gore conceded, al gore lost some crucial moments there in the beginning of the 2000 recount. So look for biden to try to seize the moment and almost ignore what trump is doing. Now, all this heres the caveat, kasie. If the math is on his side. If it looks like biden is going to win, and it looks like hes going to be the next president , you can expect him to start acting like that and start making moves to reassure the nation. Kasie . So, hans, the sense too i mean, thinking about, okay, what does that look like, the possible biden address. You guys are reporting that the president may look like hes on track to get 270 electoral votes based on the early returns and we talked so much about those mailin ballots. You know, what is on the flip side, the trump strategy to try and say, hey, look at this blue wall. Like were doing better in pennsylvania than we thought. We have heard about what the president thinks says he wants to do at that point. Right. This is the red mirage, we have been talking about for several weeks or months. The way that the votes are counted it look could look like donald trump has a victory leading in to the early hours of the morning. And in part because of pennsylvania, pennsylvania will be counting late. So the idea even though we had the early votes counted many of them have been banked but not all of them have been counted. And thats in different states so all of the early votes casts not counted if i misspoke there. So hawk fish the democratic leaning firm is projecting we could see a red mirage. That may not be the case, right . States may look blue, the screens may look blue but what theyre prepared for is this idea is theres a perception out there that trump may have won and what youre hearing from the Biden Campaign you know, its pretty unusual the day before a campaign to do a briefing like the Biden Campaign did yesterday and basically lay out all of their cards on the table. The percentages that the other side needs to get and theyre doing this in the interest of creating a mathematical argument. They think theyll win, and heres our numbers are telling us, lets be irrational and calm from us and if we hear from the Vice President tonight, expect him to adopt that kind of tone. All right. Texas, look to see if john cornyn whos running for senate there outperforms President Trump. Theyre expecting that he will and hold on to that seat. But republicans are pretty nervous about texas. Iowa, republicans are really hoping joni ernst can hang on in iowa. If she cant, it will be a tough night in the senate. Florida, florida, florida. Joe is scarborough im sure will have tons to say in a couple of minutes but the polls are potentially tightening and maybe leaning in bidens direction and that really brings it all down to the sunbelt suburbs. If we know that the sunbelt suburbs are going big for biden we could have a very early night or if not, we could be looking at weeks or months of fighting.
