S. , covid19 infections are spreading at the fastest rate since the start of the pandemic. Over the past week, more than 500,000 new cases have been reported. Yesterday marks the first time that the rolling sevenday average of new daily case counts tops 70,000. To give some perspective here, it took nearly three months for the first cases to reach the 500,000 mark. When the outbreak first began back in january. So far, more than 8. 8 million cases have been reported nationwide. And nearly 228,000 covid19 deaths have been confirmed. This comes as the Trump Administration continues to claim that we are, quote, rounding the corner on the pandemic. Be careful out there, folks. Wear a mask. Meanwhile, President Trump made a Campaign Swing through the midwest yesterday, holding rallies with packed crowds in michigan, wisconsin and nebraska, in defiance of coronavirus recommendations. On the trail, he again complained about the coverage coronavirus is getting. You know now, with them, cant watch anything else. Turn it on, covid, covid, covid, covid, covid, covid. At his stop in wisconsin where case rates are surging right now, the president pushed for the states to open up. Its a choice between a trump boom or a biden lockdown. Lets lock it all down. By the way, speaking of lockdowns, lets get your governor to open it up. Lets get him to open it up. We should point out that yesterday wisconsin reported its worst coronavirus numbers yet, with more than 5200 new cases. And 64 deaths on tuesday. State Health Officials have urged residents to only leave home when absolutely necessary. Theyve said it once already, well say it again, wear a mask. Former president barack obama hit the campaign trail in florida yesterday where he mocked president s trumps complaints about coronavirus Media Coverage. And well, whats his Closing Argument . That people are too focused on covid, he said this at one of his rallies. Covid, covid, covid, hes jealous of covids Media Coverage. If he had been focused on covid from the beginning, cases wouldnt be reaching new record highs across the country this week. When it comes to testing, President Trump once again repeated his false claim on the campaign trail yesterday that the increase in cases is simply due to an increase in testing. But the Trump Administrations testings admiral bret gurer opened with this. Were testing people. Were testing very young people, were testing everybody. In many ways i hate it, in many ways, i hate it. Overall, we find out where it is, there are a lot of things they use it to make us look bad. Testing may be identifying some more case, i think thats true, but what were seeing is a real increase in numbers. Compared to the memorial day surge, even though testing is up, this is a real increase in cases. We know not only because cases are up and we can calculate that but we know that hospitalizations are going up. Joining us now reporter for the Washington Post eugene scott who hosted that conversation with admiral giroir yesterday. Eugene, good morning to you. Always great to see you, let me just ask you what was your recollection between the disparity between what the admiral said there, and what the president has been saying on the campaign trail about these cases going up and about the Media Coverage of the virus . You know, kasie, it was honestly shocking, if your viewers get a chance to watch the entire interview, he at least not only said wear a mask. But held up a mask to show people how to put it on, probably five times. This being someone who is on this Coronavirus Task force for the president. A president who mocked his opponent for wearing a mask. And seems to think that theres too much attention on covid. It just lets you know how just how inconsistent, perhaps, the messaging from the white house on how serious this illness is, and how that can be quite confusing for voters looking to top officials trying to figure out which way to move forward as we expect the possibility of more outbreaks this fall, as more people move indoors. Well, on that point that he made about hospitalizations is, of course, a critical one, and were starting to get such worrying reports from so much states about hospitals potentially becoming overwhelmed or already being overwhelmed. So, i think that point is very well taken in terms of how these numbers are playing out. Eugene, lets talk a little bit about former president barack obama. He was, as we saw a little bit there, in florida, on the campaign trail. Seemed fired up. Seemed, you know, willing to take some pretty sarcastic shots in some cases. That was kind of the hallmark of president obama when he was out there on the trail. A little different than the former Vice President joe biden who has approached it in a little bit different way. How do you think president obama helps joe biden here in the final stretch . I think obama was deployed hopefully to really connect with voters who supported him in 2008 and 2012 but didnt show up in 2016. The post previously reported that about 4. 4 million obama voters skipped 2016. And about a third of them were black. So, obamas trying to remind these voters of just what their absence in the voting process helped produce. A president that is deeply moving in a direction that is opposite of what the Obama Biden Administration aimed to do. Hes trying to let those voters know if they actually do come out and support biden, they can reverse that and perhaps atone for their absence in 2016. Some of the strategists that ive been talking to as well say theres particularly a focus on black men making sure they actually get out to the polls. The folks im talking to, anyway, feel like thats particularly a place where they have work to do, i should say. Washington posts eugene scott, appreciate your reporting. We want to turn to other news, police in philadelphia, shot and killed a black man triggering violent protests across the city. Police shot 27yearold Walter Wallace jr. On monday after responding to a call about a man armed with a knife. In a statement the responding officers ordered wallace several times to drama the knife, but he continued to advance towards them. They then fired their weapons, quote, multiple times, shooting him in the chest and shoulder. Wallace was pronounced dead at the hospital shortly afterwards. His father told the Philadelphia Inquirer that his son struggled with Mental Health issues and was taking medication. Violent protests resulting in two dozen police officers. Now, were expecting a category 2 hurricane over the top of new orleans this afternoon. We could see a storm surge of six to nine feet. There may be evacuations that we didnt think were necessary yesterday that are necessary now. And then the storm will quickly race through the southeast later on tonight. In a clear sign, meanwhile, that a stimulus deal will not be reached ahead of election day. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is out with a letter addressed to democratic colleagues telling him that the white house has failed miserably to control the pandemic. In a letter she writes for a long time now, Congressional Democrats have laid out a Strategic Plan to crush the virus. The white house and Mitch Mcconnell have resisted. And yesterday saying were not going to control the pandemic. From hopes to hundreds of thousands dead the white house has failed missably. Now we know why they resisted science at expensive lives, livelihoods and our democracy. The bottom line here, of course, it doesnt look like any relief is coming before before the election which could mean it doesnt happen until january or later. Thats some tough news for so Many Americans out there. Meanwhile, according to the u. S. Elections project, more than 71 million ballots have already been cast in the 2020 election, with less than a week to go until election day. Battle ground voters account for more than half of the early ballots cast with the New York Times reporting that democrats appear much more eager, according to the times, quote, in the five battleground states that report party registration, nearly 2 million more reche stret registered democrats have voted thus far. In the outlier is pennsylvania where as of yesterday early vote tallies were about 28 of 2016 totals. Texas leads the nation in early voter turnout, with 82 of the total number of 2016 voters having already cast their ballot. Wow. According to the center for information and research on sink learning and engagement part of the texas voting phenomenon is a 600 increase in voters under 30. Meanwhile, the crucial state of florida has surpassed its 2016 early vote totals. Floridians have cast 6. 8 million ballots already, with almost 4 million cast by mail. The statewide turnout thus far is 46 , according to the u. S. Elections project. With 42 of voters being democrats, 37 republican and 20 independent. But in Miamidade County which did not mail absentee ballots out until the last possible day, turnout was less than 46 and lagging among democrats. As of tuesday evening, the state reports that in miamidade, 52 of republicans, 47 of democrats and 37 of independents have either voted early in person or past their mailin ballot. Democrats have a 80,000 advantage vote in miamidade a county where democrats need a strong showing if they have a chance to win that state. Weve got a week until election day. In michigan the latest Reuters Ipsos poll puts joe biden ahead by nine. In nevada the latest Siena College poll shows biden leading by six, 49 to 43. In iowa, biden winning by four points within the margin of error. And in north carolina, Reuters Ipsos, biden with margin of error 50 to 46 . Biden visited the new battleground state of georgia yesterday, the event in warm springs about an hour south of atlanta is where fdr would visit during his time in office. He used the therapeutic waters there to ease the pain of polio. Biden called on that similarity for healing. This place, warm springs is a reminder that though broken, each of us can be healed. Biden heading to georgia, theyre clearly trying to demonstrate that they are on the offense. Certainly, they are financially, but there does seem to be some signs that, you know, weve sort of known this all the way along, although there have been questions about, okay, are we going to get a blue wave, but its going to be really close. The numbers out of miamidade, some of those numbers in north carolina, its really shaping up like i Election Night is going to be a real nailbiter, and its possible were not going to know the outcome until a couple days later. Its likely we wont know the outcome until a couple days later because of the sheer number of ballots that are coming in. The litigation that seems likely to happen from democrats as well. The polls have shown a steady race for some time now but that doesnt mean its going to be a blowout in any sense of the world. The travel schedule that biden has put together, though limited, suggests that they could expand the map in certain ways but also suggests they want to help out ballot democrats in not one but two Senate Operations in georgia that theyre looking at as well. Theres industrial strength in the polls, you never want to read too much into the numbers, but the block of states in the southeast, florida, north carolina, georgia, texas, extremely tight. You can see a small polling error push it one way or the area. Its going to be a dramatic night, you knew that already, but its going to be close. Whats your sense of thinking right now in the Trump Campaign about where he stands. I feel like im picking up a little bit of optimism that didnt seem to exist before, that maybe this final week there is something, somehow, that is turning his way. But then you watch him on the campaign trail, hes complaining about coverage of the virus, you know, i turn on my tv, this is all i see which doesnt necessarily suggest someone who believes that hes winning himself. Right. I mean, in 2016, you know, they were doing this sort of frantic pace like they are doing right now. Multiple rallies a day and using the crowds theyre drawing as Proof Positive that the momentum was behind him. So, its a similar sort of vibe. The difference is, i suppose, that hes contending with a massive and expanding pandemic at the same time now. And obviously, that complicates not just his ability to campaign, but the message that he wants to strike. So, you know, yes, he did complain about the coverage of the coronavirus which seems like an odd thing to do when youre the president. You know, i get i do sense some some optimism from the trump world when youre in this, its hard to tell whether thats optimism or deliberate spin. I do think its fair to say that they have a much more difficult task ahead of them right now than in 2016. Like i said the polls have been incredibly stacked. And the undecided voters is much smaller than in 2016. It doesnt mean that he cant win, its doable, but the pathways to get it done are even more limited than they were in 2016, and that was already a very difficult task. Theyre going to have to thread the needle. Very quickly, sam, what are you watching in the last week . What story interests you the most or what are we not paying attention to that we should . Well, you know, whats interesting, i guess, is where these last big money expenses are being made, and of course, of course, the campaign stops. For me, it was watching Mike Bloomberg decide to vote 15 million in advertising in texas. Im curious what goes to texas as well if biden does, that means hes feeling optimistic about the chances. And what trump does in terms of his schedule is obviously revealing. The early voting, like i said, we look for any signs, im trying to slap my wrist down and say dont do it. I know its bad and its not necessarily scientific. But at the same time, im refreshed with the pages and the numbers, and its just force of habit. I really do think that a Campaign Priority has come down to where it spends its money. So when you look at what resources are being spent but also where, that should tell us a lot. Yeah. For sure. Where do things stand right now on the ground in michigan . Do you think President Trump still has a chance to win there . That means all the polls you that have dont mean anything, because the only polls that matter are the ones that happen on election day and people going into vote. I have to say, four years ago, as you said, i was very worried that donald trump would win michigan. Can i say to you now that he couldnt . No, i cant. Because it does matter who is going to vote. The Biden Campaign has taken this race much more seriously. Its understood that there are a lot of working people, men and women, that are in the auto industry, manufacturing, Building Trades that are worried about their jobs. Wants somebody to care about them. And i think joe biden does a much better job of connecting with them. Weve seen job losses in michigan. That he promised werent going to happen. I mean, were surrounded on saturday, i had an intense auto discussion. Im telling you anything can happen. People stay calm. Theres storms, snow, Everybody Needs to vote. Can i ask you what is sort of concerning i guess i would say, reports coming out about potential intimidation or violence at polling places. Theres been some questions about sheriffs and whether local sheriffs will respond, will the Michigan State police be called. There have been challenges on whether people can openly carry guns into polling places. How nervous are you that we could see some troubling scenes unfold at polling places over the course of the next week. So, im going to tell you that im very different from other people, and you approach it from the standpoint that youre going to be safe. There has been, in the courts yesterday, the court we were at yesterday said that Jocelyn Benson who is our secretary of state did not have the right to ban guns from polling places. I talked to many of our sheriffs and policemen, what ive done the most on for the last ten days. Some felt it was encouraging people to show up, that they were challenging their Second Amendment right. Heres the fact, youre going to be safe on election day. You cant let yourself you know, a lot of people when a group of 50 Trump Supporters came felt it, i didnt our attorney general is working with Law Enforcement across the state if theres somebody there right away, you go into it with a positive head. Not i find it kem trying toe to being positive. Go to the polls, have fun. Theres a great video out of philadelphia. Im going to dance with my attorney general and with some people in line on thursday. Have fun, if you have to stand in line, youre going to be safe. If bidens elected, are there any positions that you think a progressive democrat should absolutely be in this spot in a Biden Administration . I would say all positions should be filled by progressive democrats. We know that the policies we advocate for are most popular with the american people. I doubt his cabinet selections are going to fit her definition of progressive democrat, at least not every single one of them. We talked about that and i had respond thats a tall ask. But it reflects the Pressure Campaign that progressives are ready to launch against President Biden if he and Kamala Harris win in a way were not seeing thimm them criticize joe biden now publicly and the way we saw progressives go after Hillary Clinton in 2016. We see the ways in which she has these lines that shes mark down in the sand. She doesnt want him to appoint any republicans in i had cabinet. She told me that pointblank. She wants to move forward on Green New Deal which he doesnt support and has said as recently as the president ial debates he doesnt support. But theyre look ahead to down ballot votes thinking ahead to have more progressive allies in congress. They hope if they grow, as the president likes to say, oac plus three or plus five or plus seven, then theyll have more power working with the president joe biden. But to your point, biden, every time i talk to folks close to him, they say progressives like our climate plan, but so do union folks. That reflects this bipartisanship that biden is is going to pursue that progressives arent interested in. If you think about the way things are unfolding, in if fact this does shape up into the way that polling suggests it might, thats going to be partly because democrats have folded a lot of former republicans possibly into the fold. Those never trump folks who were turned off by, you know, maybe the president s character but are fundamentally more conservative than the party. If anything, the Democratic Party as it expands, may become more conservative not progressive, no . Well, and we saw some of those trends in the 2018 midterms, as you know. Democrats who helped dems take back control of the house were decidedly more moderate in running in hes trthese red and districts. There are more progressive candidates who have won their primaries and looks like theyre headed to congress. Though in 2018 not many of them at all made it through. So thats a big difference too. But even yesterday i was talking with some folks close to democratic leadership on the hill and theyre pointing to racism in place like arizona and florida and these sleeper bellwether places that theyre looking for. Places like arizona and florida are place wheres this liberal, Progressive Agenda is helping democrats down ballot. Speaking of the sunbelt, axios is reporting that georgia may be one of the cliff hangers that were watching. What are you look out for . There are two Senate Contests there. Both of them republicans and democrats alike tell me and axios that they expect both of those races to go to a runoff. That matters because if control of the senate which both parties are saying hinges on these two states or these contests hinges on georgia, we might not know control of the senate until january. That could increase voters enthusiasm in a late stage of the election to really turn out and make sure that theyre party wins one of those Senate Contests. But, of course, georgia has been a traditionally republican state. Joe biden was just there yesterday. Senator Kamala Harris was there last week. Democrats are really going after this trying to boost not just the top of the ticket with joe biden and harris, but those down ballot candidates, warnock, both of the Democratic Candidates who are leading but not quite at 50 to make it clear to avoid a runoff. It could go all the way until january, and both parties are fighting hard. Republican super pacs have dumped millions, Mitch Mcconnells super pac 32 million. Its very expensive. Very competitive.
