On the investigations across the region. Developing news overnight from syria, how shelling in aleppo has the ceasefire there appears to be unraveling. Good morning, everyone, it is monday, september 19th, im alex witt alongside louis burgdorf. Were going to start the breaking news out of new jersey. This is where a suspicious device was found at a train station. It exploded early this morning. The blast happened just before 1 00 a. M. In elizabeth, new jersey, roughly 20 miles from saturdays bombing in new york city. Elizabeths mayor, chris bollwage, says two men discovered a backpack near the station, when they opened the bag and found wires and pipes inside, they immediately informed police nearby. The fbi now says there were multiple i. E. D. S inside. The mayor said the explosion happened as a police robot was cutting into the device, and this is video captured of that blast. After shortly speaking after the explosion, mayor bollwage struggled to make sense of what happened. The people who are doing this, they have no value on human life, and its really difficult to understand their rationale. You have to wonder on the thoughtfulness of humanity and their perspective of human life, which is in their minds a real negative, and as we spend all day trying it to make it better, they spend all day trying to make it worse. Well, the discovery of this latest device comes as police in new york city continue their investigation into saturdays bombing in manhattan, which hurt 29 people. Authorities say they stopped a vehicle of interest last night near the citys verrazano bridge. Five people are being questioned, none have been charged. Officials say that Surveillance Video captured near the scene of saturdays blast, along with video of where a possible secondary device was located just blocks away, may show the same man at both locations. Nbc News National correspondent Miguel Almaguer has more from the scene in elizabeth, new jersey. Miguel, good morning. Reporter alex, good morning, where there is still a very active Police Investigation here scouring this now crime scene here. Investigators say they discovered a backpack here late sunday night. Inside they say were five devices, two men called in that backpack, who stumbled upon it, called investigators, who then cleared out this area. It is 300 feet away from a nearby bar with more than 25 people inside and close to an adjacent train station in this area. Investigators shut it down, cleared out this area, and they say as they sent in a robot to probe inside that backpack, they were able to cut in, quote, from the mayor, quote into one of these devices when it then exploded unintentionally. Investigators say this was clearly a bomb, it was left to be detonated. There was four other devices, five devices total inside that bag. Investigators are now collecting the other devices. They tell us theyll be sent to quantico, virginia, where theyll be able to further investigate what happened. Investigators still have this area closed down. This investigation still very active this morning. Miguel, thank you for that. Joining us from new york city now, chris pollone. Whats the latest on the investigation into the blast . Yeah, good morning, alex. Right now on 23rd street here in chelsea the street remains closed about a block down at 6th avenue, of course, where the bomb blast happened here 8 30 saturday night, 29 people injured. All out of the hospital this morning. Also going on at this hour, the fbi says it is questioning five people pulled over on the verrazano bridge last night in a car of interest, as the fbi calls it. They are just checking to see if those people might have any connection to what happened here saturday or any of the other events that have taken place over the last three days, but at this point, no one arrested. Alex . Chris pollone, thank you so much for that. Hillary clinton and donald trump addressed the explosion in new york city saturday night. Trump appeared to preempt authorities when he said a bomb went off, while clinton urged caution. I must tell you that just before i got off the plane, a bomb went off in new york and nobody knows exactly whats going on, but, boy, we are living in a time. We better get very tough, folks, we better get very, very tough. Its a terrible thing thats going on in our world and in our country. And we are going to get tough and smart and vigilant, and were going to end it. Were going to end it. Ive been briefed about the bombings in new york and new jersey and the attack in minnesota. Obviously, we need to do everything we can to support our first responders, also t pray for the victims. We have to let this investigation unfold. Do you have any reaction to the fact that donald trump immediately in a statement tonight called the explosion in new york a bomb . Well, i think its important to know the facts about any incident like this. I think its always wiser to wait until you have information before making conclusions, because we are just in the beginning stages of trying to determine. Well, the ceasefire in syria has reportedly all but fallen apart as violence there continues to escalate. An official for rebel forces told reuters the deal reached by the United States and russia has, practically failed and remains to be saved if it fails. The escalating tensions come a day after u. S. Led air strikes against Islamic State fighters mistakenly killed dozens of Syrian Government forces instead. Joining us from london, matt bradley. Matt, this is so disappointing. Any point a ceasefire can be salvaged at this point . Thats right, alex. In the end it may not have been the Syrian Regime or Russian Troops that finally undermine this hardwon truce in syria, instead it was an errant American Bombing that hit the wrong target and looks like that could be the fatal blow that finally ends this ceasefire. It took american and Russian Diplomats ten months to negotiate the agreement, which came into effect as a week ago, and even then it was seen as unlikely to last, even though many syrians thought this was the last best hope to save civilian lives in this fiveyearlong civil war thats killed nearly half a million people. The u. S. Admitted they hit troops by accident, and opening the way for Islamic State fighters to siege a position, and russia is saying its not a mistake, saying its troof they support bashar al assad. The air strike and diplomatic fallout thats followed is just another metric of how confusing the syria civil war has become. The u. S. Government has whiplash for condemning syrias president , to threatening to attack the Syrian Government, to negotiating a truce with them. Following this air strike, the antagonism has returned and is going to cloud Barack Obamas trip to the United Nations this week, where syria is likely to dominate the discussions, alex . Sure they will be a hot topic there. Thank you so much, matt bradley from london. Donald trump launched a series of attacks against former defense secretary robert gates this weekend after gates expressed concern in trumps ability to be commander in chief. Gates expressed his worries about the preparedness of both president ial candidates to be commander in chief. At least on National Security i believe mr. Trump is beyond repair. Hes stubbornly uninformed about the world and how to lead our country and government and temperamentally unsuited to lead our men and women in uniform. He is unqualified and unfit to be commander in chief. Trump first responded via twitter, never met but never liked dopey robert gates. Look at the mess the u. S. Is in. Always speaks badly of his many bosses, including obama. On saturday trump again went after gates. We had a clown today, an absolute clown, robert gates. Hes supposed to be an expert, been there forever. Writes a book, says bad about everybody hes worked for, been there a long time, nasty guy, probably has a problem we dont know about. Believe me, i am so much better at what hes doing than he is. You wont even believe it. In an election of name calling and labels, donald trump and his supporters are beginning to label themselves with the moniker deplorable, some supporters showing up with the word deplorables on their shirt. In miami trump entered on stage from the broadway play les miserabl miserables. He sought to capitalize on Hillary Clintons comments. My opponent slanders you as deplorable. And a word that hasnt been picked up to the same extent, ir redeemable. That means you cant be made better or whatever. That means youre always going to be deplorable. I call you hard working american patriots who love your family and love your country, and you want to see it be better. So i was starting to doze off, then i heard the word deplorable. I object, whoa, and irredeemable. Think of it. Led her to violate federal laws as secretary of state, hide and delete 33,000 emails. So is it appropriate to use the word irredeemable . You know, thats not a word i would use. I wouldnt use it. I think i think we would be unrealistic to think that some people are going to fundamentally change their view. If theyve clung to the view for five years, as donald trump has, that president obama is not a citizen of this country, i dont think they are going to change their views. Rnc chairman Reince Priebus says it is time for Donald Trumps former primary challengers to support his campaign, suggesting there could be trouble for them in future elections if they dont. Look, people who agreed to support the nominee, that took part in our process, they used tools from the rnc, they agreed to support the nominee. Were a private party, were not a public entity, those people need to get onboard. And if they are thinking they are going to run again some day, i think that were going to evaluate the process of the nomination process and i dont thk its going to be that easy for them. John weaver, a top aide for john kasichs campaign issued a statement in response, the idea of a greater purpose beyond ones self may be alien to political bosses like Reince Priebus, but is at the center of everything governor kasich does. He wont be bullied. All 17 of the initial gop candidates signed a socalled loyalty pledge stating they would support the eventual republican nominee, regardless who it is. Kasich, along with senator ted cruz and Jeb Bush Still have yet to support trump. Still ahead this morning, gas shortages lead to long lines across the south. Plus so hes hosting tonight. Id also like to take this opportunity to personally apologize for the current political climate. I think that veep has torn down the wall between comedy and politics. Our show started out as a political satire, but it now feels more like a sobering documentary. So, i certainly do promise to rebuild that wall and make mexico pay for it. Lastly, id like to dedicate this to my father, willie louisdreyfus, who passed away on friday, and im so glad that he liked veep, because his opinion was the one that really mattered. Thank you. Hit and miss showers and storms across the ohio valley and new england area yesterday, airport delays will be a problem and the roads, too. Heaviest rains are now shifting into areas of northern new jersey, in and around new york city at the peak of rush hour, thats never fun. Heaviest rain in the midatlantic region. Today it will make it to the coast of new england and mostly down in virginia, North Carolina tomorrow. The other story is just the warmth is not giving up. Colder air filtering down from canada, no signs of it today and the middle of the week as we welcome in officially fall. St. Louis is going to be into the 90s, houston will be 96 to 93. Back up to the mid 80s in the middle of the week, very warm start to the fall. Heres actually the forecast for the first day of fall on thursday. Chicago at 85, kansas into the 90s, dallas at 96 degrees. If you love the crisp air, you have to be in the northern rockies, looks warm everywhere else. Dealing with the rain today, guys, then a summerlike week out there. The humidity is up there, too, on the east coast. I think everyone felt that yesterday. Oh, great, the humidity, thank you, bill. No one will forget. See what the power of points can do for your business. Welcome back. Lets turn to business, where gas is in short supply in parts of the southern United States after a pipeline spill leaked an estimated 300,000 gallons of gasoline. Nancy hungerford is joining us live from london. What more can you tell us on this, nancy . Well, we do have some good news to report this morning and that is the Company Behind this gas leak, colonial pipeline, has started to work on a bypass to get around the problem. Theres no indication how quickly construction will get off the ground here and how quickly the bypass will be flowing gasoline, but what we know so far is when it comes to the actual paying at the pump, increases of anywhere from four cents per gallon in the carolinas up to 20 cents in some states such as georgia. Analysts are saying no need to panic quite yet. Were talking about an upper limit of 20 cents increase at the pump. Nevertheless, this has caused some scares, as you talked about, some shortages at several stations. Some states declaring a state of emergency. That is where we stand. Overall on sunday we were talking about in georgia prices rising 20 cents, but keep this in perspective because that was on a weekly basis of 15 to 20 cents and overall gas prices have been very low due to ongoing low oil prices. Another story for drivers to Pay Attention to today is around volkswagon. It is nearly the oneyear anniversary the Diesel Scandal became rev lent here and now were hearing reports the audi head of research and development is set to be suspended from allegations from an Ongoing Investigation that perhaps he knew about the diesel case.
