A Senior Administration official tells nbc news that the president will lay out for the world the steps that he and his administration challenges. Those challenges range from the Largest Armed conflict in europe since world war ii to escalating tensions with global super powsers, notably china. Well have much more on the president s speech as the morning continues. Meanwhile four americans wrongfully imprisoned in iran are now making their way back to it United States. They were freed after the u. S. Released five iranians from custody. Yesterday morning the Freed Americans landed in qatar. Some of them had been held in one of irans most notorious Detention Centers for years. In a statement President Biden celebrated their Return Writing in part this. They will soon be reunited would their loved ones after enduring years of agony, uncertainty, and suffering. The president also thanked several other Foreign Government for their help. Secretary blinken saying he had an emotional conversation with the freed prisoners after they landed in qatar. However, President Biden is facing some criticism for the deal he brokered with iran to release those prisoners. Republicans are condemning the white houses decision to unfreeze 6 billion of funds. They warned this could create an incentive of sorts to take more americans hostages adding iran has not changed its ways. We should be clear President Biden isnt the first one to negotiate a prisoner swap. In the 1980s Ronald Reagan secretly sold weapons to iran and donald trump when he was in office also agreed to prisoner swaps with both iran and north korea. Still trump criticized bidens Agreement Posting on truth social he never paid anything to bring hostages home writing, quote, once you pay you always pay and many more hostages will be taken. The Trump Administration, however, we should point out did give some concessions in hostage deals such as releasing tallben leaders back in 2014. Former assistant attorney general Jeffrey Clark will have to wait to find out if a georgia judge agrees that his Fulton County Election Interference case should move to Federal Court. Attorneys for clark appeared in court yesterday to argue that because he was working within the scope of his job at the Department Of Justice at the time, his trial should be mubed from county court. The judge said he would rule on that matter on a later date but did not specify a time line. He drafted a letter to officials after the 2020 race saying the doj was skeptical of the election after the direction of former president trump. The Washington Post is reporting that clarks lawyers said it would be, quote, simply impossible for him to do what he is charged with if he were not acting as a federal official and trump had, quote, ratified his clients conduct. Prosecutors call on one of clarks predecessors as head of dojs civil division, jodi huntd, as a witness to counter that argument. Clark testified it had nothing to do with Election Fraud negotiations which were the responsibilities of the dojs civil rights division. Elsewhere in news Rudy Giuliani is drowning in debt and now his own lawyer is suing him for unpaid legal fee. Thats according to a lawsuit from Robert Costello who alleges giuliani failed to pay him and his law firm for Legal Services related to Election Interference cases in georgia and washington, d. C. And a variety of other legal matters. They claim giuliani is on the hook for nearly 1. 4 million in outstanding fees and that he only paid a fraction of the tab, just 214,000 since november 2019, which is when he first retained costello. However, the complaint does say that giuliani made a partial payment of 10,000 last week. In response giuliani criticized both the lawsuit and costello saying this, quote, i cant express how personally hurt i am by what bob costello has done. Its a real shame when lawyers do Something Like this and ill say their fees are way in excess. Donald trump hosted a 100,000 a plate fundraiser for giuliani at his Bedminster Golf Club to help with the former mayors Legal Defense fund. Its not yet clear how much that event raised for giuliani personally. Joining us now to talk about all this legal analyst our friend lisa ruben. Jeffrey clark, lets start there. Hes the latest trump ally to argue its the former president soly responsible for his action. Thats an argument thats not worked in every other case before. Do you think it might be successful . Not for the reasons he used yesterday. It wont be successful in allowing jeff clark to move to Federal Court because the burden is on him to marshal evidence showing he was not only a federal official but he was acting in the scope of his federal duties. That is probably not a fight hes going to win. But in terms of him saying trump ratified my conduct, this is actually one of the first times weve seen somebody in one of the cases closest to trump say, no, no, no, it was his fault. We have the judge in Fulton County dividing it into two buckets. All the rest hes left for a different date. Then you have trumps thenlawyer or the Justice Department official saying he put me up to it, we know from trumps own lawyers hes likely to say no. Well obviously keep an eye on that. Lets switch to Rudy Giuliani. As we just detailed hes being sued by his lawyers. Theres been plenty of media reports about giulianis current financial struggles. If hes not able to pay the bill, giuliani is of course an attorney. Its been a long time hes been a u. S. Attorney and deemed a successful one in new york. May we wend up in a scenario where hes going to be representing himself . I dont know that will be the case because its very difficult sometimes to withdraw from a criminal case when youre a lawyer representing someone whos a criminal defendant. Bob costello doesnt represent giuliani in the Fulton County case because he knows its hard to withdraw. What i think is increasingly likely is that giulianis legal problems and his financial difficulty are driving him towards bankruptcy where a bunch of people are going to get in line and say this guy owes me money. This would include the law firm but also ruby freeman and shaye moss who have a good fault judgment against giuliani. And lastly with so many legal cases swirling around right now whats the next thing we should be looking out for any matter involved the former president . I think we should be look out for Recusal Motion and the next thing we should be looking out is tomorrow where three more people are trying to move their case to Federal Court. The Federal Reserve is kicking off its twoday policy meeting today. What should we expect . Yeah, so that kick off is going to be quite interesting because its actually more about the detail than it is about the actual decision. Theres about a 99 chance that has been put forward that the fed will keep rates on hold. An unchanged stance is what were anticipating from tomorrows outcome which kicks off today. There has been a slight loosening of the labor market as well, but overall theres a clearer sense that perhaps things are beginning to weaken on the back of those consist, the Interest Rate hikes weve seen for the last number of months. There has been at least ten consecutive Interest Rate hikes at some stage and then there was a pause, of course another 25 basis point hike. The anticipation there will be another hike in november. Theres a 70 chance of that happening. I suspect the market will be looking for more hints from Jerome Powell whether theyll hike more rates in the future and whether the psychoal is at its end. Heres a headline i think got a lot of attention including a lot of people of those who work in the west wing. Oil prices are on track to reach a new high for the first time this year. Tell us about it, arabile. Yeah, in fact, a tenmonth high at some stage at well is what has been hit, right . And one would aecht at the end of the summer when the driving period kind of comes to an end youll find that fuel, oil prices all of those will perhaps drop off a little bit because demand begins to wane. But actually what has happened is saudi arabia and russia in particular have decided to continue their aggressive cut how much oil is supplied to the market, which has affected Brent Crude Oil which has gone up to 95 a barrel, but wti has gone up 92 a barrel as well. Thats the highest mark since last november and that gives you a clear sense supply in this market is beginning to get squeezed ever so slightly, and this of course will make opec nations very happy because they wanted perhaps not explicitly but want the 100 a barrel being a more preferable price for them at this stage in the market. The United States military has found the debris field of a crashed f35 jet after many hours of searching. It was located yesterday in south carolina. Officials say that the f35 was involved in a mishap that forced the pilot to eject from the jet while it was in auto pilot mode. That was back on sunday. Authorities tell nbc news its possible the jet remained airborne for some time before it crashed. The debris field was discovered last night about two hours northeast of joint base charleston. The base says the pilot was taken to the hospital earlier in the stable condition. Its unclear at this time what issue prompted the pilot to eject, and for a solid day the military didnt know where the jet was and even asked the public for its help. Obviously were pleased the pilot is okay and no one seemed to be hurt and the crash on the ground, we all had a few laughs about the military being unable to find its plane for a day ore so. To get your assessment what do you think happened and frankly how common are accidents like this . The accidents are very common. In fact, the marine corps, unfortunately, has had what we call three class a mishaps, which is anything that costs over 2. 5 million to adjudicate in the last six weeks. Thats a lot. And therefore the most significant action out of this is that the acting Commandant Of The Marine Corps, general smith, has called for marine corps wide stand down meaning we stop flying and look at our procedures.
