President trump donald j. Trup p trump is in palm beach. Taking an attack at the evangelical magazine and the congressman john dingell and his widow. And debating the price of being popular. With us, cliff wats. Security analyst. Christina author of the book black ethnics. And joining us from washington, d. C. , White House Reporter for the washington post, also an msnbc political analyst. I want to start with where things stand at the end of an historic week. President trump in his West Palm Beach manson. Lawmakers back home and the process at a standstill. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi continues to flex her political muscle against the white house and Senate Majority leader. Our founders suspected a roeg president. I dont they suspected a rouge president and leader at the same time. Starting what would be if mcconnell would get his way, a speedy impeach trial to favor the president. He said hes been in, quote, total coordination with the white house council. Another, what is playing out between Mitch Mcconnell and chuck schumer. Also at an impasse over the rules for that trial. Schumer wants to hear from the witnesses who did not appear before the house of representatives. All of this happening. Here is a new poll that show 54 of voters want to hear from more witnesses during the trial. 54 of republicans feel the same way. President trump has accepted the speakers invitation to deliver the state of the Union Address. We have been here before. President clinton delivered his state of the union while his trial was under way. Lets take stock of where we are at this point. What is the status we are siege the clash between two heavy weights right now. Plague hardball the way democrats havent and dont up against the guy who special eyes in political hardball. It depends on who plays the game the best. Nancy pelosi is right. She said already, hes not going to conduct this in a way that is impart al. She is challenging that why the house did what he did. Shes going to do thinks might gain her a little bit of leverage in order to establish some rules and an agreement perhaps that there be witnesses called. It could blow up in her face the problem is that, yes, Mitch Mcconnell has played this game a little tougher and a little stronger. We heard the president down play this at the rally in michigan. This is a stain on legacy. That astrix will bother him now forever more. You have seen him shout away with the one thing that cant be undone. Hes saying it is impeachment light. He has been impeached. He does have that asterix. He cannot make it go away. You are seeing him grapple with that on stage, on twitter and i think youll see more of that Going Forward. What do you make of what he may be facing at this point . Is the trial going to begin here in the near future. There were open questions he didnt seem to foresee. It is correct. This is the first time hes ever had to face some consequences for his actions. As much as he would say, i dont care. Only someone who is a total soesio path would not care. He does care. I fundamentally agree with nancy pelosi in the sense that when we read the constitution, im so glad he did accept the invitation because that is stated in the constitution. Hes been flouting so many rules and norms. I was worried he wouldnt accept her invitation. The founders did warn us about a rouge president. We could not foresee a break down of all three institutions simultaneously. He knows hell forever be known as someone who is in many ways a failure. We have to keep in mind last week, the International Leaders laughing at him and making fun of him while he was at the party and then leaves, picks up his marbles and goes home. Hes thinking about this. My concern is that hes only going to become more rational. If you remember when bill clinton was impeached, all of a sudden, we started bombing african nations that we hadnt even spoken about before. Im glad you mentioned that. The distraction. You had Vladimir Putin doing his speech ando downplaying this here. Open interference. Usually the russian president would target the entire country. Now hes picking a little portion of it. They would say active measures win through the force of politics and the politics of force. This is what hes doing. He doesnt have to hide it anymore. If you watch russian state propaganda. The news sites often have the same guests we see on conservative networks. When i do a lot of analysis of russia now, they dont have to make fake news. There is plenty of divisiveness in america they can repurpose. It is amazing how we are both open to repurpose and how it has flooded the entire space. The president has called on china to do investigations as well. Our election now is a global event. Everybody sees it as, well, the Mueller Investigation nothing came of that. The president has openly called out due investigations on my opponent. Why not . There is no consequence for any of it. We have seen the tweet since the letter was released. We have the state of the union on the horizon. Let me play a tape back in 1999 when bill clinton delivered his state of the union and the atmosphere then. While mr. Clintons address was about the state of the union, the focus for many was the state of the presidency. Still hard to believe that this is a man whose job is in jeopardy. My fellow americans, i stand before you tonight to report that the state of our union is strong. [ applause ] how does he intend to control this narrative or try to control this narrative Going Forward. Going back to that letter, we understand now, it was written by advisors to the president. What is this speech going to look like . There is so much talk about the way in which bill clinton tried no the to talk about the process. This is a president who could not resist talking about it ever since he gets behind a microphone. Thats a good question. We dont know the answer. The state of the union is one of those things weve seen with President Trump and past president s specifically that moment, the setting, the ceremony, it often lends itself to a speech that can be dry and boring. It can be sort of an opportunity to appear president ial. That said, thats what President Trump has done in the past. He reads off the teleprompter. That is often when hes at his best. That letter wasnt just written to nancy pelosi. It was dictated by President Trump himself. That was something he wanted to get off his chest and he put it on white house letterhead. That was the only thing that felt formal oro official about it. Hes been angry and lashing out in ways that are quite cruel as he attacked the late john dingell. Hes furious with pelosi. When we look towards the state of the union, it is the question is this going to be something that is more official where aids write it and he reads off a teleprompter and delivers it or that he has a speech on the teleprompter but impeachment is so nagging on him that he ends up going off script in a way that is quite trumpian. Thank you for joining us. Coming up, congressman debbie dingell. She and her husband attacked by President Trump. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi taunting the president once again. This is a smoment in american history. I cast this solemn vote. Thats why we take the solemn but necessary vote to impeach. I visualize travel rewards. I receive travel rewards. There were more tweets and that sixpage letter where he compared his impeachment to the witch trials. In a room where the depositions took place as the star chamber of persecution. A phrase the president parroted in that letter. Nancy pelosi said over and over she prays for the president. In this letter, he took issue with that as well. The speaker moved forward and once again said she was praying for the president. Saying, he just got impeached. Hell be impeached forever. No matter what the senate does, hell be impeached forever. If i did nothing else, we saw the power of the gavel there. The press was in michigan at a Campaign Rally talking about this. Dish washers. You do the dishwasher, right. You press it, boom, there is an explosion. Five minutes later, you open it, steam pours out. Now you open it, women tell me. You get so much water. Talking more about appliances. I mentioned the gavel. She talked about the gavel there. Recognizing what power she has in washington today. How does she come out of all of this. How does she emerge and what took place in washington this week . You know, she has run this house in a very, very professional and tough way. There were so many critics ahead and questioning debating whether she would get it again. Debating whether she was the right person to manage this moment in time. The last time she served as speaker, george w. Bush was president and then barack obama. Shes proven she can go toetotoe with him. The reason she is there is the she and other managed to turn over 40 seats. This vote they all took, this purple district, red district democrats was a risky vote for them. She knows her power lies in maintaining her leadership. She was able to say, do it. It is time and it is the right thing to do. Well see if that was the right choice politically a year from now. Going back to the debate about whether she should be speaker, what was the debate . Was it how effectively she could control this body or was it in part out meddlesome she could be to this president . Remember they were having the conversation, should we go with a younger leadership. As ive said, she is from the city of baltimore. She mows retaknows retail polit. Her father is one of the first italian mayors across the United States and the coalition that needed to happen. Her brother was also a mayor. She understands american dem cra crassy in a way most people dont. She was also speaker when barack obama was president. She had to get all of those democrats in line to have them vote on an imperfect bill. She was the one, it was nancy pelosi who went to peoples office and said, guess what, you might be unemployed after this bill. We need to pass this. Hopefully you wont be unemployed. That may be the case for certain democrats after this Impeachment Vote in districts around the country. I think she understands the importance of this moment. We cannot let this president keep disrespecting the constitution and as the leader of the house to sit back and say, well this isnt normal but it is not good for the purple democrats to do this. The reason why she gets under the president s skin besides gender and that she is a strongwilled person is that this didnt happen with barack obama. He is obsessed with barack obama. When he lost the majority in 2010 with a republican speaker of the house. He wasnt impeached. That is weighing on the president because legacy he ties to barack obama. He said it is such an easy job, he could do it. Now we see he cant. Talking about power. She did two interviews. There was a question about fear she was asked. She said, pftt. She said, fear is never a word used with me. This has been a through line we have seen this last year plus from walking out of this white house meeting to standing in that cabinet room among that room of white men around the table. Thats right. Shes smarter than them. She knows the policies. Especially with the dishwasher. The president doesnt understand any of these processes. He has no idea how they work. She does. She has experience, knowledge, loyalty from her party. She knows how to use that and shes smarter than him on the issues. This is a natural consequence of going in and trying to rough and tumble her. Shes going to pivot. Shes been in this town. He calls it the swamp. But hes walked right into the swamp. Thats also why Mitch Mcconnell loves President Trump. If you watch the president , he always turns to mcconnell to be his savior. They know the process and how d. C. Works. Shes done an amazing job of outsmarting him there. Why certain republican senators are wearing their loyalty as a bath dth of honor. Work so hard give it everything you got strength of a lioness tough as a knot rocking the stage and we never gonna stop all strength, no sweat. Just in case you forgot all strength. No sweat secret. All strength. No sweat. Everything i do during this, im coordinating with white house council. There is no difference between the president s position and our position as to how to handle this. There is no chance the president is going to be removed from office. Im not an impartial juror. I anticipate well have a partisan outcome. Im not impartial about this at all. He wants the Senate Impeachment trial to proceed. Those remarks have led to an outcry and oped from senator kamala harris. Lets be clear, he writes, he doesnt want a senate trial. He wants a senate coverup. A letter signed by feinstein and robyn asking republicans why they intend to pursue investigation into conspiracy theories about ukraine and the former vice president. You heard the Senate Majority leader there saying im not an impartial juror. I wonder what the prospects you would think about the trial weve have in the senate when it gets to that point . When i heard leader mcconnell say that. It is unbelievable because we will actually take an oath as we sit in the senate. Well take an oath that well be impartial and have impartial justice as we move forward. This is very serious and solemn. We have to take an oath. I dont know how leader mcconnell will raise his right hand and take an oath. They wanted the senate to be a place where impartial justice where you could pursue the balance. The debate as to whether or not the Supreme Court could handle the impeachment coming to the conclusion that may not be the best place why justices was not nat nominated by the president. Spelling out that the president is held in check and accountable. Clearly, thats not what we are hearing from the majority leader. Thats why it is important we continue to press for rules in place that this is fair and as much as possible impartial and nonpartisan trial. What do you make of the strategy of the House Speaker holding on to these articles and not delivering to the senate. Engaging your eagerness to get started. Are you okay with the delay weve seen in place here . The most important criteria is to get it right. Do you want this to be an impartial justice and fair trial. Many of us would also like to hear from some of the witnesses. Witnesses that did not come forward. The president didnt allow certain witnesses to come forward. That is important for us to get the full picture before we make the full decision. I am a little perplexed as to why the president doesnt want some of the witnesses to come forward. They could potentially help the president s case. If he doesnt show up and prevent him from coming forward, that sends a strong message that they would pursue the testimony offered under oath. Looking to the statement under the house, abuse of office and obstruction of congress are voe serious charges that deserve solemn consideration. We must have a fair and nonpartisan process. You turn to other issues of importance to your constituents. Now that you are back in michigan, how are the people talking about this . How difficult is it to maintain the balance you talk about there. I do. Im focused on the issues day in and day out of concern to people in michigan. Dealing with health care, high cost of precipitation drugs, protecting the great lakes is of critical importance here. That is my focus day in and day out. Certainly, this is a very serious issue. This goes to the very Core Foundation of our democracy and constitution that Congress Needs to hold the president s power in check. We dont elect a king, we elect a president. They are accountable for the norms of the behavior. They are entrusted with the trust of the United States. If they deviate from that, they need to be held accountable. The process theyve put forward is a very serious one. We need to step into this and be as impartial as possible. This is about the future of our country. It will be the precedent for future president s to come. This is an incredibly serious thing we are dealing with. Ill defer to my colleague with a question for you. I want to ask you more about the Political Landscape there in michigan. The president wanted in 2016 for his reelection. You too, sir, face reelection in 2020. Give us a sense of what the state politically looks like right now. Michigan is always a very competitive state. Weve seen that in elections in the past where we are truly going to be a battleground state and swing state. So goods michigan will likely go for the country as well. I find the people are following the proceedings an will follow the trial closely and want to make sure it is fair and impartial and will be evaluating it in those lenses. They want to make sure we are focusing on really the task at hand which is dealing with the concerns of everyday folks here in michigan. The bread and butter issues they talk about around the dinner table. We have to keep focusing on those as well. I want to return to the rally and what he said about legends from your state. I wonder how that is resonating in the state. I saw you condemn what he had to say on twitter. This is more than a miss step. I wonder what the ramifications are as you see it . It was reprehensible. When i heard that, i was shocked. John dingell was an incredible Public Servant in michigan. Folks understood his long career of Public Service, always putting service above self. He really made us proud here in michigan. To have the president say what he did. To have a president of the United States basically attack someone who has passed away and who served with such honor and distinction is clearly reprehensible. My heart goes out to debbie dingell. Someone who has been a friend of mine for years, just like john was. The fact that i know she is still grieving. It is something beneath anybody but for a president of the United States to speak that way is something we should loudly condemn. Thank you. Appreciate your time on this saturday. Have a good holiday. Coming back, all the president s men. First here is Steven Colbert from the president s personal attorney. Im getting a phone call that says it is from you. No, no. Thats a butt dial. Dont answer it. My butt has been turned against me by the bidens. What does that mean . My butt has been working behind my back. Do your asthma symptoms ever hold you back . John bolton is speaking out publicly for the first siem since he left his post. Here is ambassador bolton in conversation. I think although i have a lot to say on the subject, the prudent course for me is just to say i decline to comment at this point. Stating he has a book in the works. Saying, quote, it has been the pattern as weve watched over three decades now. The North Koreans are happy to declare they are going to give up their Weapons Program particularly when it is in exchange for support but then they never do it. Michael flynn will be sentenced on january 28 for lying to the fbi. Rick gates sentenced to 45 days in jail he can serve on the weekends. In new york, the judge dismissed state charges for paul manafort. Hes currently serving the prison term in pennsylvania for conspiracy and fraud. Christina, ill turn to you on the last of the president s men. There was some hope here if this were to happen in new york perhaps this could charge. I think there is a great appointment. What we do know about so many people in this administration that either they are in prison, going to prison or soon going to be on some sort of trial. The only person that seems like he can always escape is donald trump. Last week, that showed maybe that is not necessarily the case. We dont know what his post presidency looks like as we get closer to november 3, 2020, we will see some tweets that the president will have some questions because so many people in his inner circle have been prosecuted from various things. This is why the president has never been willing to testify or to speak to congress in any substantive way. Those of us from new york know that, we know he lies. He cant help himself. Most people around donald trump know it is just, it is the air that he breaths. We are not talking about building codes in queens anymore. We are talking about international and federal responsibilities. Really taking a step back, what is really sad is that so many men have ruined their reputations and put their lives on the line. He will not protect them, he will only protect themself. For the american democracy and for someone teaching our students to get them inspired to come into the world of politics, they look at this and they look at all the people surrounding the president and they are disgusted by it and quite frankly disappointed. Let me ask you about john bolton and breaking his silence. I studied the transcript a number of times trying to get them to comment on impeachment. Talk, he leads me to believe that he might have some eagerness to do some talking. What he would defer to. What did he say to him that he needs to speak. As soon as he actually says what he thinks, the news cycle passes by. What is a fleet of people that go in through the administration and come out. What i find remarkable is that hes stepping in to a Foreign Policy discussion. A few years ago, he would invade north korea. There is legitimate talk. Now it is not even discussed. Weve had these highprofile meetings with kim jungun. Nothing has come from that. North korea has done exactly what it did from every president before. That north korea discussion is important to him. He puts himself in this but not really revealing anything. I find it strange, even in the case of ukraine, you see him wanting to be a Foreign Policy stall watrth. Hes not going to break the new you cheeses now to step in. Is it because he wants to sell books or because hes really worried about the legal ramifications . I cant really tell. Mike pompeo reenacting his page. He is serious about running. Another run is cory lewandowski. Here is a clip talking about it and ill ask you comments after the tape. Making sure financial resources, my family is behind me 100 which they are. It is the best way for me to help the president be reelected. All of these factors are pointing me in one direction. That direction if i had to make that decision today, i would run. What is he going to do here in New Hampshire . As recovering the leadup to the New Hampshire prime minister, the politics there are consumed with that. Running a lot of digital ads. This has been a major concern of theirs for a couple of reasons. Number one, the state almost went for donald trump in 2016. Trending blue over time and came within a hairs breath of trump winning. There is clearly a path for lewandowski. There are Trump Supporters that would lover to reward his former campaign manager. The state is also one that has dropped in its approval of trump. Like many of those purplish states. He has a low approval rating. The gamble is there are a lot of people in New Hampshire who havent voted for years before. Came out and are still activated and wanted to see that in that seat. A good chance that he could win the primary there and it could set up sort of a proxy Senate Battle there to trumps reelection to have sort of a minitrump running for a senate. They would love to not see him run but they are prepared for it and it will be a competitive race. Thank you to my panel, joining me here in new york. The president harolding the signing the National Defense bill. Does that shed light in a dark week of his presidency. This is a very big and important moment called the space force. Lawmakers headed home to their districts as the first family flew to West Palm Beach, florida. His holiday visit to the Sunshine State comes after a flurry of activity in washington, a possibly government shut down averted after the president signed a 1. 4 trillion spending package. Now allows for 12 weeks of family leave for federal workers. The first tuesday in february, President Trump will deliver the state of the Union Address in the same chamber where lawmakers voted to impeach him this week. That may coincide with the senate trial. But still up in the air. Pat was on capitol hill meeting with republican senators. Well see if the op ed resonates with any of them. More on that in the next hour. Plus, will the president ever apologize. Congressman debby dingle will join me after the break. Do you recall, not long ago we would walk on the sidewalk all around the wind blows we would only hold on to let go blow a kiss into the sun we need someone to lean on blow a kiss into the sun we needed somebody to lean on all we need is someone to lean on overnight President Trump signing a 1. 4 trillion spending package in order to avert a spending shut down as the president headed to palm beach. All this as he and the country await what is next in the impeachment process. After nancy pelosi put a pause on sending two charges over to the house, they question the viability of getting a fair trial in the upper house of congress. Our founders when they wrote the constitution, they suspected that there could be a rogue president. I dont think they suspected that we would have a rogue president and a rogue leader in the senate at the same time. Big op ed this morning. Jeff flake addressing his former republican colleagues saying the danger of an untruthful president is compounded when an equal branch follows that president off the cliff. We will talk a lot about that. Eddy, the chair of the center for africanamerican studies at princeton university. Jeremy peters, a reporter for the new york time the new york times. Gene scott a political reporter with the washington post. Jeffrey roseneidiheidi. Give us the state of play, where things stand at this point. It is an empty washington, d. C. This morning as lawmakers have left. What is the status of these negotiations between the house and the senate but also between republicans and democrats in the senate. You hear a lot from Mitch Mcconnell about 1999 and why cant we just use the same process that we used in 1999 which was we agreed up front to some of the mechanics and logistics and later we agreed who the witnesses would be. In 1999 the witnesses had already given grand jury testimony. Ken starr laid out everything in his report. Monica lewinsky testified. They had all the information they needed. Big difference with today, where you have some of the question witnesses being blocked by the president. So the speakers concern is that if she sends those articles over without some kind of hint of an indication from Senate Majority leader Mitch Mcconnell that they will try and call these witnesses that they will lose a lot of leverage. They are really depending, once they send those articles over, on at least a couple republicans digging their feet in with democrats and saying, here is what we want in the rules, here is what we want on the witnesses. But for democrats to assume that one or two or three republicans are going to really dig in and buck their party and their majority leader and insist on the same witnesses the democrats want, well, they just dont see that happening, so they see their leverage right now in holding back on these articles. At the same time, im told that hold will not be indefinite. Let me ask you about momentum. There have been complaints about how quickly democrats are moving in the first stage of this. Now there are complaints it is perhaps moving too slowly as this is being held. How key is that Going Forward . There is this political calculus when the speaker has to make. When this moves to a trial, that will occupy the time of the sitting senators, many of whom are campaigning for president at this point. It will be key for democratic voters. I have spoken to quite a few folks who dont completely understand the process and want to know what happens next, what is actually going on. As of right now, its not very clear and what the House Speaker will have to do is communicate to the people who wanted democratic lawmakers to impeach the president that what shes doing makes sense and it will get the reaction and the response that she hoped it would. I want to ask you here, if i could, eddy. I was reading it and wondering if he has more force or more sway just remembering his role in that republican caucus. It begins, i dont envy you. Thats the first thing he said. And then he presents his test to his former colleagues in the senate. What if barack obama had engaged in precisely the same behavior. I know the answer to that. You would have understood the threat it posed, and you would have known exactly what to do. How much is there among this Republican Congress to hear Something Like that, to reckon with jeff flake is putting forward in that op ed. I dont want to prejudge, but i will. They do. I will. I think jeff flakes op ed presume theyre good faith actors to whom hes speaking. And the evidence suggests to me that many of the folks in the senate, particularly Mitch Mcconnell are not and mcconnell is not a good faith actor. Speaker pelosi said the founders anticipated a rogue president. They did not anticipate a rogue actor who was leading the senate, to paraphrase. Here in this moment she basically makes clear, as clear as ive heard her say, that trumpism, that the reality that were experiencing with trump is not just simply him, that there are a whole bunch of enablers and folks that are complicit, and it is a constitutional actor, the Senate Majority leader, who is part of this. So i think flakes op ed is flake, right . Its what he said when he was in office. Its vintage flake. It presumes a set of good actors. What we know now is that Mitch Mcconnell is as mack vav yan as you can imagine. I think Speaker Pelosi knows exactly who shes dealing with. The case, too, is for them to think of their party. What do you think of the resonance of that . Its time to put the country over party. How much thought are they giving to the integrity of the Republican Party at this point . Because here is what theyre doing. They are living in the moment right now, right . Right now this the trumps Republican Party. But when trump is no longer in office, what do they have . Theyre already losing so many republicans, its basically a party of 65 to 70yearold white men in america. Thats essentially what the Republican Party is these days. You know what . Those people are dying. 10 to 15 years now, who is going to be left in the Republican Party . Where are they going to be in 10 to 15 years. Thats the gamble theyre taking. Theyre not looking at the Long Term Strategy or how were going to bring in more people. They have these desperate attempts to bring in women and minorities. Its not working. Theyre not communicating effectively. I have to Say Something about jeff flake. We were so disappointed when he decided to retire. You wonder what he would be doing now . Would he be one of the actual defectors from the gop if he were sitting in the senate or would he feel like he has to play along with Mitch Mcconnell and with the rest of his colleagues . I dont know that were going to have any defections in the gop and the senate. Time will tell. You wonder what some of these people would have done. Id like to hope fl would be a few people who would side with democrats and make this a bipartisan impeachment, which it should be. But we dont know. I want to ask you what you have written about in the times today about whats happening here. And what you write about so well is what it says about how that voting block is fractured. We talk about the evangelical vote. You highlight in your piece its not that. What does this divide show you or tell us about the Republican Party or voters that support the Republican Party . You have a president who on twitter since this came out is down playing it, demeaning the magazine, demeaning its circulation rate. How important is what we saw in this magazine that week . I think its more symbolic than anything else. Any time there is a republican, a conservative, a leader of faith who comes out and says, i have a problem with this president , what is wrong with the rest of you, we in the media and the Democratic Party whips itself up into this his steer yeah. Is this a crack in the dam . The answer is no. Thats not going to happen, and i do not foresee that happening at any point for the rest of the trump presidency. Why this editorial was so important was how it showed the way the rest of the party, including by and large most of the evangelical movement is in lock step with President Trump. What President Trump has done to the Republican Party, the way he has consumed it is exactly what he has done with the Political Evangelical Movement in this country. And you look at this editorial. Whats so striking about it is it says what a lot of people, conservative, christian, republican, senator, congressmen are saying in private. Theyre deeply troubled by the way this president acts, but they are afraid to say it in public, and thats what was so striking here. There was a sense of, yes, somebody finally said it because among a lot of evangelical christians, just like among a lot of republicans, they get tired of seeing a few very protrump loud vocal spokesmen basically saying we speak for the rest of you when thats not really the case. Now, im not suggesting that there is half a party, half the White Christian evangelical Christian Movement that thinks this way, but a significant portion of them have serious misgivings. I want to return the moment were in right now and the ambiguity surrounding it. We talked about what the constitution says, whats allowed for, whats written and whats not allowed in this process. As you watch whats happening here, the house delaying handing over these articles, as you look at the debate and lawrence tribe who studied so much and written so much about impeachment, this debate about whether or not the president is impeached as a result of whats happened here, what does it say to you about the plas tisty of this process, about what we understand about impeachment, about how were all still reckoning with and trying to understand whats happening here. Thats a good word. It is remarkable how sparse the constitution is when it talks about impeachment. The chief justice has to preside, but thats it. And the debate between noah and lawrence isnt settled by the constitution. Its not settled by precedent because its never happened before. If someone were to sue the house to require them to turn over the articles, there would be no precedent about that. The question of what the chief justice will do substantively if there is no agreement about the rules and democrats are saying you must admit certain witnesses and the republicans are saying you cant, the constitution doesnt speak to that either. It is remarkable how Speaker Pelosi did talk about the presumption of good actors, and the whole system presumes deliberation, moderation, compromise and faith. That was madisons faith. And the assumption is that both parties would be striving toward the common good. When you have a system so polarized that either party trusts the good faith of other and there is no ability to agree about facts, that faith of the founders, come let us reason and deliberate together, breaks down. So we are in a remarkable moment. Words like unprecedented and never seen before are just as good as your wonderful word, david, plas tisty. But the system cant survive unless it bends and adapts. When it doesnt, it will break and were about to see a system that is polarizing at the very moment when people are supposed to coming together. Polarization begets political creativity. Thats what were seeing here as well. What we are seeing nancy pelosi try to navigate here is novel. Shes trying to make sure this is done in a fair way. I think back about how weve seen this manifest over the years. It was an element of political creativity on the Senate Majority leaders part. What do you make of that. When you have an opportunity to try to trod new crowd, to figure out with the crowd as precedent, to use the constitution but then try to navigate these very stormy and political waters we are in. To invoke stewart hall we find ourselves in a con jung churl moment. Its a crisis moment and it is a moment of possibility. So how do we choose the pathways, right . Where do we do . And the thing is it involves in some ways actors who are in some ways thinking about the wellbeing of the country. The republic is relatively young, right . We are a young nation in the grand scheme of history. You have these moments, these inflection moments where choices will determine, right, where we go. In some ways the nation stands on a knifes edge. We have been talking about constitutional crisis, worried about the presidency, worried about checks and balances. All of this is in play. So it depends on the actors. What are the values . What are the interests animating their choices. If Mitch Mcconnells sole interrest remains stacking the bench. If Nancy Pelosis sole interest remains the 2020 election, right, in either case the nation will remain in jeopardy. We need folks to step out and become statesmen and states women. Based on what we have seen and we have heard, i wouldnt put a lot of money on that bet. Well leave it there. What the president misunderstands is that cruelty is not wit. Just because he gets a laugh for saying the cruel things that he says doesnt mean hes funny. That was nancy pelosi addressing President Trumps attacks on john dingell who died in february. In michigan wednesday the president learned an asterics will be after his name forever. In a long speech he went on an attack. Despite the outcry from members on both sides of the aisle, the president has yet to apologize and no one in gop leadership seems to be pushing to hold him accountable on the matter. Joining me is debbie dingell. It is wonderful to have you with us. My sympathies to you as well in light of what happened this week and as you continue to grieve for your late husband. Im struck by what the House Speaker had to say there. I was struck listening to the president deliver those lines. Yes, that was despicable. But i paused to listen to the laughter in that arena as well. Im troubled its been characterized to be a joke when i dont find it to be that. I wonder how much you thought about the laughter and the reaction to what the president said. I saw a piece in which he talks about the president s ability to change people around him. I just wondered how you reacted to the reaction. You know, i think im just trying to move beyond it. I was in a state of shock when i got the first media call telling me what the president said, and my Immediate Reaction was about my husband who i love and am having a hard time this holiday, had a hard time at thanksgiving. He was a man of faith, and having someone joke about his or even it was serious to me when i had heard it, that he might be in hell, it rattled me. Following that, i felt like a tsunami had hit me on thursday. Somebody had sent me an op ed that he had actually wrote last december. He was here last december about his friend george bush when he died a year ago and talked about both of them caring, caring about the tone of rhetoric in this country, divisiveness. He probably wore his button george bush had given him, giant pain in the ass. Im hoping coming out of this people will take a deep breath and understand their words have consequences and they have to think about push back. We got to chaunge the tone of rhetoric in this country. I really want this to be a moment where people understand words hurt, actions hurts and lets try to just restore a little civility that were losing in this country. You bring up that piece that he wrote for the detroit news and karen brings up a piece he wrote that the post published after his death talking about some of these issues related to civility. He wrote, seems dedicated to sewing division in the most irrelevant and infantile personal terms, the political opposition. You have been taking solace in his words, what he wrote, what he said. What would his prescription have been to deal with this . I imagine it is something you talked about in the early days of the trump presidency. I think he would first of all, hed tell me not to cry. Hed tell me to stand up and keep doing my job, which is what i am going to keep doing. Im working for the people of my district, the working men and women. I have been home since yesterday. They have been incredible. I was in several uaw halls yesterday, and i cant tell you how wonderful those men and women were, and i dont think the president meant to do it, but he has sure energized them and several of them had voted for him, but they were offended by his words. I told them not to get angry, not to apologize. Nobody should apologize. Many of my republican colleagues were apologizing. I really want to make i want something to have happened. I want this to be a moment when people think about how all of us, whats happening on social media, how people are saying things they never should and were not going to change it all, but maybe we can get some people to change how quick it is to Say Something negative to bully other people and just maybe we can get some people to do be kinder, gentler and do little random acts of kindness that can make a difference in many people ees lives. Congresswomen, she has a question for you. Hi, congresswoman. Great to see you this morning. You know, i spent ten years working on capitol hill. I had a lot of friends that worked for your husband. He was known as somebody who worked across the aisle. He was beloved by democrats and republicans. He always put the people first, not only in michigan of course but the country. I frankly was surprised to see more republicans not come to his defense or really criticizing President Trump for the comments that he made. Were you disappointed that you didnt see people like kevin mccarthy, you know, other Republican Leaders come out and admonish trump for making these just horrific comments . Im not letting this turn into a political moment. Kevin made it clear at his press conference we were both friends. I gave him a hug on the floor and wished him merry christmas. I was with a number of republican colleagues that were as upset as i was on wednesday night. A number of them did come forward and speak. I know i may sound poly annish, but on the floor on thursday morning on what could have been a really horrific day after the impeachment, which is dividing this country and back home and im feeling some of those tensions. Though people have been so incredibly time i cant tell you. Lu having yesterday or the day before almost gotten into a fistfight and ended up talking to other democrats. The diversity of people. You know what, i dont im not looking for an apology. It doesnt actions that thats not what im looking for. I want something good to come out of something that made me cry and something that was an attack and an unnecessary attack on the man that i love and i really miss. If that means people are talking to each other, theyre being nicer to each other and some people in this country are taking a deep breath before they go for that bullying, hostile, visit tree yolic comment on facebook, then something good as come out of it. I was talking about this interview with my wife last night. We were thinking what happened here aside from the rhetoric. Thats the president s understanding of what happened here. In the context of what the president said, in michigan it was that you somehow owed him something for that. There has been talk about a quid pro quo or bribery. This to me is just another indication of the president s world view. You are a political actor. You are somebody in politics in washington, d. C. You must look at this as some indication just the way this president operates or sees the world. What insight exclusive from the rhetoric or poor attempt to land a joke or laugh with the audience have we learned about President Trump and what happened here in washington . I want to say first of all my husband was a world war ii veteran. Thats all he wanted, the one thing he had said to me for a number of years was that he wanted to be buried at arlington cemetery. He was buried there, and i had researched that a year earlier and had been told by the army he was eligible because he was a world war ii veteran and the service that he had done. It was the speaker who was trying to get me to pull myself together and figure out what we were going to do for him. And i didnt want to be laid out in the rotunda for him to stand there because it is not something thats done for former members and i didnt want anything special. But it was the speaker and senator mcconnells decision. He did call me. He called me and told me he was going to lower the flags. On that call he was extremely call and extremely empathetic, and i appreciated that call. And you know, even today that call meant a lot that he respected my husband enough to lower the flags. Those two, the death of my husband was a very different, private, hard i miss him. The decision i made to what i had to do. And by the way, that was im worried about this country. Im worried about how divided this country was. By the way, he did endanger our National Security, but what worries me even more is how hes dividing this country by fear and hatred every single day, and thats what i care more about than anything. But i made my decision that i cast my vote on on the facts, and thats what my responsibility is when i take that oath of office to protect our constitution, to protect our National Security and the two events are totally unconnected. Congressman, thank you very much again. And my condolences. I cant less this pass without saying, i was a public radio reporter and your late husbands communication director said i could get five minutes to talk to him after the Affordable Care act passed. It ended up being a 30 minute conversation. A lot about his personal history and his dedication to Public Service and it was just one of the most memorable interviews that i have had, and on the subject of humor and again his failed attempt at that i suppose you could say from the president , your husband was incredibly, incredibly funny. As i hear you talk about the discourse that we have and what happens on twitter, he is actually the person on twitter that i miss the most. He was incredibly wry and funny. I appreciate the time given to us here. Thank you. Thank you. And have a good holiday. Thank you so much. Well be back in just a moment. So that early retirement we planned. Its going ok . Great. Now im spending more time with the kids. Im introducing them to crab. Crab . They love it. So, you mentioned that that money we set aside. Yeah. The kids and i want to build our own crab shack. Ahhh, youre finally building that outdoor kitchen. Yup with room for the whole gang. See how investing with a j. P. Morgan advisor can help you. Visit your local chase branch. If the democratic debate showed us one thing on thursday, its that the fights got worse. Mayor pete has become a focus of his fellow democrats since his rise in the polls. Hes polling at 22 . On thursday he found himself in a Fiery Exchange with senator warren after she took issue with one of his latest fundraisers, a dinner that was held infamously in a wine cave. Lets take a look. The mayor just recently had a fundraiser that was held in a wine cave full of crystals and served 900 a bottle wine. Think about who comes to that. He had promised that every fundraiser he would do would be open door, but this one was closed door. We made the decision many years ago that rich people in smoke filled rooms would not pick the next president of the United States. Billionaires in wine kaifs should not pick the next president of the United States. This is the problem with issuing purity tests you cannot yourself pass. If i pledge if i pledge never to be in the company of a Progressive Democratic donor, i wouldnt be up here. Senator, your net worth is 100 times mine. I do not sell access to my time. I dont do call time with millionaires and billionaires. Let me pull out one part of that. That is having to do with the purity test. The notion of a purity test by which candidates are measured is similar to another political metaphor, the litmus test. But a purity tests suggests a scrutiny to weed out any ideological impurities. What did you make of that . We had seen these two fights by proxy. We got indications of who paid elizabeth warren. We got information on Pete Buttigiegs career. That came to a head on stage here. What did you make of what he had to say about the importance of or the damaging effects. My main take away from this was that buttigieg was clear that he believes that billionaires and millionaires should have a seat at the table in shaping pe ining policy. That was an interesting point considering that people on the left were concerned how much influence billionaires and millionaires have in politics. What buttigieg failed to communicate is that he isnt having the real concern is not that you have opportunities to make yourself available to people that have means and resources. It is that you perhaps are giving special treatment to these individuals. That is one of the challenges that warren has. Whether or not she did it in the past or whether she continues to do it right now. Where she is right now is saying this is not what she wants to happen for the next leader of the country. How effective was that argument. Also just about how dont discount a billionaire or millionaire from being a participant in this process. Elizabeth warren has made one of her big campaign pillars, that shes not seeking out big money donations. Shes not calling these millionaires and billionaires. Thats one of her big, you know, bonuses. In terms of thats one of the reasons why she has such a strong grass roots fundraising apparatus. People that are willing to give 1800, 1900. Now on the flip side, first of all, mayor pete never met an attack that he cant handle. He is a master at taking any incoming and turning it into not only usually an advantage for him but also to a very crisp sound byte that can be played over and over again. Hes so good at taking any attack that comes his way and turning it to his advantage and flipping it back on the opponent. Thats a communication aids dreams. So not only did he say oh no im not taking this, but he also said he made it clear that, you know, hes not going to sit there and defend the fact that he is taking money from well thinkier donors. Thats part of the fact that hes leaning into. Hes got to do that in order to fuel his campaign because he is getting a lot of grass roots donors, but hes not getting them in the numbers that elizabeth sawarren and Bernie Sanders are. I didnt come here to talk about this. And so if you have this, talk about the wine cave and bund lers and what happened at mckenzie or didnt happen at mckenzie and who is consulting for whom, how helpful is that for voters about a process that is taking place at a level above where most of us are living. Well, if you believe that big money has fundamentally corrupted our political system, then this actually goes to the core, to the heart of the problem, that the problem isnt just donald trump, that the whole thing is broken. Its been broken since Citizens United because those that have tremendous wealth, right, has in some ways determined the direction of our country, has in some ways produced the extraordinary wealth and equality, has generated the procarety of workers. So this is not a purity test. Thats just a red herring. It is where do you stand on the roll of big money in our politics. And 80 of democrats have been polled saying they do think that there is too much money in politics. And so this goes to the way in which i was a big and im using the past tense here. I need to be careful. Ive been really, shall we say, impressed by buttigiegs campaign. But what im worried about is that youre getting the familiar, right, the same old same old wrapped in a kind of identity politics thats defined by being young, thats defined by being gay and the like where identity politics becomes the trojan horse to bring the same old same old back into politics. And it makes sense to me that the left wing of the party would see that and begin to challenge him directly. And so what we do know now is that the moderate lane is really clo crowded . You got amy klobuchar, joe biden, pete buttigieg, my man corey booker. So all of that is happening. So it makes sense that senator warren and senator sanders who raised a Million Dollars that night would bring buttigieg to task. Respond to that quickly. Yeah. Look, yes, 80 of voters in the democratic primary have concerns with big money, but i dont think it is impacting his voters. It may be debilitating him from expanding his base, but i dont think the voters, the coalition that mayor pete has built is that concerned. I also think, look, ill put it this way, if you were going after his clients, if thats the best you have to attack on somebody, you dont have a lot there. One of the benefits of being somebody that is i dont think and has a limited record in Public Service or working in the private sector is you dont have a lot out there. And i think one of the reasons why the mckenzie attack fell flat and didnt go anywhere is because not only was there not a lot there but he made it clear i want to be transparent about this. Here is my client list. Let me get out of my contract so that i can disclose all of my clients and who they are and he did. Every time an attack comes at him, he leans into it. He addresses it and hthen he flips it back on somebody else. That is hard to find. This is a civil war on the Democratic Party in full view. Understatement. Understatement. All right. The president relied on his loyalists to protect him from impeachment this week. Why diversity was only apparent across the aisle in that house chamber. Beyond the partisan politics on full display, there was a another major difference you couldnt help but notice between the two political parties. On the democratic side there was a group of lawmakers both skewing younger. Compare that to republicans in the house and the republican fight to defend the president has been led almost entirely by the same group, having just three republican women and one person of color between them. With rapidly changing demographics in the country, moving the reins of power from white men to essentially everyone how long can they avoid this shift in the electorate. Ill start with you on that point. Michelle goldberg wrote about this. The structure of american democracy gives disproportionate power to a declining group. How much selfawareness do you think there is among the Republican Party of what we saw in full relief there on wednesday . I think the Republican Party at this point is very aware that they are not a Diverse Party in terms of the representation. The question is how much do they care . The question becomes how much are they acting putting in place actions to recruit more younger voters, recruit more women and people of color. At least there was a time where people faces were put forward to give you the perception. Weve seen since the president came into the white house like some of the former shining stars of the gop are in longer there and not being replaced with people that would still be allowed to give the Republican Party some points in diversity. It gives the impression that this is not something that this party really cares about and they will not prioritize going ad. Lets play a little bit of that, if we could. In 1980 when president Donald Reagan was elected, 88 of voters were white. In 2020 white voters will comprise less than 70 of the electorate. America is becoming more diverse while the Republican Party is becoming less popular with minority voters. In the last midterms the republicans last 76 of minority voters. If the Republican Party doesnt start looking like america and resonating with all americans, then there wont be a Republican Party in america. Lets talk a bit about the existentialism he raises there, adrian. It is apparent. The facts are there. He lays them out. I see somebody who must be so uncomfortable in the house he has been living in. Sure. Hes leaving it. So uncomfortable that hes leaving but after a fairly long period of time. Why do so many people stay as a result of this. If you can recognize the problems within the Party Structure as it exists, why is there a compulsion to say . By doing an ad like that, trying to recruit that things are trying to change. I dont know the answer to that. If i was first of all, as a woman i cant even imagine being a republican and i cant imagine being a republican if i was a minority or if i was a person of color because the party is the Republican Party has done nothing to support women, nothing to support minorities, nothing to support people of color. They have done quite the opposite. If you voted in the last election in 2018, you were voting in democrats because republicans want to take away their health care and reproductive freedom and theyre also putting children in ages at the border. They are literally doing nothing to address this problem. Sure, it is commendable what will hurt is doing and putting these ads out there but hes not addressing the problem. Hes leaving it and becoming one of the other victims who is deciding, you know what, im not going to stay in congress anymore. It is not for me. I will try to fix the problem, but i will do it on the outside, not the inside. From the birther moment and the fight over obama care, a look at the dark political decade that was as we approach 2020. Thats coming up next. Up next. Grandpa, can you tell me the story again . Every family has their own unique story. Give your family the chance to discover theirs this holiday season, with ancestry. This holiday season, you may have gingivitis. When you brush, and the clock could be ticking towards bad breath, receding gums, and possibly. Tooth loss. Help turn back the clock on gingivitis with parodontax. Leave bleeding gums behind. Parodontax. As we ring in the new year and the new decade, we want to take a moment to pause and look back at the decade that was and the political undercurrents it fostered. Some laid out by chuck todd in an article headlined impeachment caps a dark and dysfunctional decade in american politics. The birth of the tea party as the movement on the republican right called out for political change in washington. Democratic president ial barack obama began the battle to ensure every american was afforded health care. Republican leaders were not in support of the president s efforts. Our top political priority should be to deny president obama a second term. A period highlighted bipartisan politics. A movement that was spearheaded in part by obamas successor, donald j. Trump. It was never more apparent that when republicans in the senate would not consider president obamas domination of merit garland following the death of Justice Scalia in 2016. We do not need a reckless president who believes she is above the law. Yep, thats right. Lock her up. Of course things got really nasty during a hard fought president ial race between donald trump and hillary clinton. His historic victory ushered in a new era never seen before in modern day politics. This american carnage stops right and stops right now. Controversy continued. Newly elected president in the middle on controversy following kpents he made after the riots in charlottesville virginia. I think theres blame on both sides. You look at both sides, i think theres blame on both sides and i have no doubt about it and you dont have any doubt about it either. 2019 wrapping up with the release of the Mueller Report quickly followed by the ukraine scandal which led to impeachment of the third president in u. S. History. Im going to start with you as we look back on all of this writing about where we are as as a result of the last ten years. The past decade has produced a parallel rise of sentiment on the left leave the political and social center more barren than at any time in history. You blame some blame here on economic inequality. And this is something that you reckon with, how much these are cultural currents that have gone so long versus so many things that have cropped up. You dont want to be hyper bollic lu i will. You think about what happened in the 1850s all of the conflict that happened over the issue of slavery and how people dhoez sides and then how it exploded. And so here we have a decade, a decade in which political partisanship which is a proxy for all sorts of racial anxiety, really a proxy for all sorts of economic anxieties that are driven by racial anxieties. And the book identity crisis which he read the election as in a way a kind of how can one put it, a way of thinking about the ways in which these divides have undermined our democracy in some ways. So what we do know is this, is that america is struggling with who we take ourselves to be. We still think we are a white nation in the vein of old europe and the idea that were not, that were not going to be that has created all sorts of anxieties and people are really struggling to hold on to who we were in light of who they think were going to be. And it seems to me that unless we get at this, because trump, we cant think that trump is at the heart of it all because exceptionalizing trump and ill be really quick here. Exemptional lying trump it looked a lot like this. Republican party was deregulating. Republican party was cutting tax, it looked a lot like what they were doing now. So theres nothing in his core here that looks unfamiliar except that hes triggering the underlying racial animosity that defines the country. So the decade that leads to this moment is a decade that we can describe as a cold civil war and all i can say is as we move into 2020, buckle p because its going to get uglier. No optimism there from the professor. Im going to go back to something president obama said. He said in this new decade its time the American People get a government that matches their decency that embodies their strength and we see from the rhett prospective we just did there of the darkness that envel lops so much of the culture in this country, do you have optimism that that is something that can and will change here in the coming years. What do we take in these last ten years. Im optimistic that will will be people working hard to make what is current, what has been the status quo in this country for a while, something different. Moving a different direction, something more hopeful. The challenge is there will be people working against them. We are up against so many people who look at americas worst moments and say im actually okay with this and i would like things to continue to move forward but no, when i look around i see people who are looking at some of the worst moments of our government and of business and of nonprofit and faith communities and saying you know what, this is not the america we have to be, we can be something better. I absolutely do believe that things could get better, will they . Thats the question. Right . Lets turn to what debbie had to say. She hopes this is a moment that things begin to change. People have to start communicating and joe biden had a really strong moment on the debate stage where he said something along the lines look, if anybody shouldnt be working with republicans given what theyve said about my son, the lies theyve said about my son its me but i know the only way were going to get our country moving again is if republicans and democrats start working together in a partisan manner. The only way we are going to clean this process up in the next decade is for people to start communicating and having real conversations. We will leave it there.
