Who says that congress has absolute control over federal expenditures even when that control may frustrate the desires of the executive branch. That news as House Democrats get closer to President Trumps finances thanks to other Court Decisions and new legislation here in new york state, but the clash between the president and the most powerful woman in the country dominated the new this is week. A war of words between President Trump and nancy pelosi. The president saying he refuses to work with democrats unless they stop investigating him. It all started with this. We believe that the president of the United States is engaged in a coverup. I walk into look at people that had just said that i was doing a cover up. I dont do coverups. The president again stormed out. First pound the table, walk out the door. Kcrazy nancy. Ive been watching her for a long period of time. She is not the same person. Shes lost it. I pray for the president of the United States. I wish that his family or his administration or his staff would have an intervention. It was sad when i watched nancy all moving, the movement and the hands and the craziness. This is not behavior that rises to the dignity of the office of president of the United States. Joel, let me start with you. Where do we stand after all you of this. You see the throughline, the argument that Speaker Pelosi made, and how it devolved. The president now far of a field in japan. I think we have to address the sub text. First the reason why nancy pelosi did this is because her caucus was cracking down on her. She was getting a lot of pressure from the progressives, the liberals in her caucus to be tougher on the president , tougher on the idea of impeachment. Pelosis initial was so that is first. Secondly, the president , the reason yes didnwhy he didnt wa talk infrastructure is because he couldnt pay for it and the far right wing folks in his own building wont let him pay for it. Mick mulvaney gave away the game when he said there is not enough money to pay for infrastructure. So all of this circus which is driven by the president because that is the world he lives in, it is all about the sub text. It is not about what is on the surface. This is not two 70 plusyearold people fighting. This is nancy pelosi trying to keep her caucus happy and donald trump trying to hide the fact that he cant move forward on something that he wanted to move forward on or said he wanted to. President trump the ring master in the rose garden as he sets up that big tent. There was a great piece bayou Gene Robinson looking at the dynamic between these two. He said nancy pelosi is large and in charge, once again President Trump is frantic and rattled. Once again a tough and powerful woman is driving insecurity man out of his mind. When you look at the rhetoric that led to this, a lot of this has to do with that dynamic, with the gender dynamic. And this is the trump playbook. We saw this with Hillary Clinton. When she was challenging him, she was crazy. When nancy pelosi has too much power, now shes crazy, there is something wrong with her. We saw the same conspiracy theories in the 2016 election around hillary and trump knows that his conspiracy minded base will take this and they will run with it. It is a very clear gender dynamic. I think there is nothing that gets under mr. Trumps skin more than a woman who challenges him. Especially a woman who kind of seems like the adult in the room compared to his kind of misbehaving toddler persona. But he knows that this works. And i think part of the problem here is this intensive coverage and repeating of the video of nancy pelosi stammering terribly, falsely edited video. And i understand that we in the news media want to talk about this stuff, but to some glee and i know you didnt do this, but by replaying the video for example, we end up feeding into the same beast that trump is creating. And we allow him to set this really absurd narrative. And i know it is hard, we cant just ignore everything that he is saying. But i think properly context all liding it, that the video is false, the accusations are false, weve seen this from him before. This is the authoritarian leader playbook. Humiliate, dominate and do it in a very sexist way. And that is what were seeing. Weve talked about the way that the president communicates. Weve looked at the legacy as well. And it strikes me watching what happened on thursday, that we saw him speak in front of those farmers and ranchers and intimate that nancy pelosi is crazy or something is wrong with her, have you seen what is wrong with her. And just a matter of hours later, we saw the doctored videos which have made their way around the altright come into some legitimacy because they were played on a cable news channel. And of course he offered that as well when he tweeted it. He gave it the goahead. Sgle lo he loves to give them authorizing. He traffics in the politics of domination. That is why he needed his staff to do this embarrassing authoritarian performance to say im very calm or very so just like humiliating and embarra embarrassi embarrassing. And i think it drives him crazy that nancy pelosi continues to win the media cycle. And part of it, despite his comments of shes crazy, what america is seeing, he not in control of himself. And he lacks impulse control in a pretty complete way. And so watching somebody who lacks control of himself always calls his sort of function sort of his not exactly sanity, but his abilities into question. And so i think that that is something that is continuely being at play here. And i think the other thing is as we see more and more of these doctored videos to jills point, we as a citizenry will have to figure out how to become more competent and look over this landscape. And well need a citizenry that is more annuble to talk about w this technology is making possible. And so we will need to up our game as a citizenry to kind of manage the media landscape that were now in. And that will ask all of us to step up at a different level. Help us marry the politics and policy. Jill talking about infrastructure not having a plan at its base. By saying that he is not going to work with democrats on this issue where there had been some hope for a bipartisan agreement, what changed this week when he says hes not going to be able to do that when that last attempt faded . I dont think anybody expected a 2 trillion infrastructure bill to be coming anytime soon given the hyper partisan nature of this. And the road runner nature of this. They have a very strong relationship and in fact it is a relationship that the Prime Minister has very much worked to cultivate. Your read of what is happening here. How these tensions have ratcheted up and what the responsibility has been. Ron probably has the most informed viewpoint on the state of the iranian economy. That is the problem. Once we withdrew from the Nuclear Accord and reinstituted economic constraints, to my surprise they are beginning to suffocate the iranians. They have to get out out oof th. They will probably start making Nuclear Weapons again. The other thing they considered is striking back at us militarily, possibly through a approximate city, possibly using revolutionary guards in the persian gulf. So i think that the likelihood of war is remote. It would be a disaster for the region. A disaster economically for the world. One third of the worlds oil supply goes through you the straits of hormuz every day. So i dont think that there will be a war. I actually support the deterrent deployment of the Carrier Battle Group and air defense elements. But these are modest forces in the region designed to signal the iranians dont take the military option. I want to turn to the oped. There has been a lot of concern among many that President Trump will pardon several men accused of war crimes, several convicted of war crimes. You write a piece in which you say there are better ways to honor the many sacrifices and performances of veterans than to exonerate those who did not follow the rules. You join martin determine determidench city in his opposition. Help us understand why this is something that the president might be considering. I dont know why he is considering it. I think it is an utter disaster. There are 16 million veterans and those who served in combat understand the stresses on troops particularly where civilians are involved. Might be complicit in mining or ieds. But we have to hold ourselves to standards. We actually are the good guys. So we didnt toleral dont tole civilians or detainees under our control. I think he is doing this for perverted political purposes. It is damaging to the image of the u. S. Armed forces. It places our forces at risk telling our adversaries well accept the murder of unarmed detainees. Bad option. He should not do this. Jeff, let me turn to you. Yeah, i think he is right on that point with that weve seen the president support the torture of detainees. And now he is making this political point of considering pardoning people who are accused of war time atrocities. That is so beyond what is acceptable, beyond what the United States is supposed to stand for. And i think that this ties in as well to the story we mentioned earlier about the armed sale to saudi arabia. We see this president who very much sees himself as a strong man sort of singular leader. He is trying to bypass congress to sell arms to a nation that is one of the worlds greatest human rights abusers, that fuels violence extremism all around the world. And that frankly alienates the u. S. Through this partnership with saudi arabia that is also apartheid state, quite abusive to women. So we se
