I want to start with you, one of the things you have done so effortlessly seems is covering how foreign interference is used to upset democracy and start getting individuals to believe that if the sangty of the ballot is not secure, then the public creates a distressing government. Is this whats happening now . Is this one of the trumps tactics . Absolutely. Thats one of the things we remember hearing consistently from National Security officials leetd up to the 2020 election. Russia, iran which china were making efforts to interfere and muddy the waters. There was a simultaneous effort by the president who under mine the election that was arguably even worse. It was coming from the inside. That was really counter acting all of the efforts that the National Security apparatus were conducting in order to make sure people have confidence in the legitimacy of the votes and the election. In one sense the fact that the russians were trying to interfere this time around really have nowhere near or we dont know yet whether it did. Nowhere near the impact on peoples confidence in this election. As the president s own conduct had. That has really concerned people in the National Security community. Because how do you counter act it when the commander in chief the president of the United States is under mining all of their work and under mining their ability to instill confidence in the election . I think whats most striking is that how many folks within the Republican Party seem to be aligned with questioning the legitimacy of the presidency of the joe biden. Can you speak to how unusual this is. It is shocking. We have never had anything the history of the republic other than civil war itself. 126 members of the congress including the people at the highest level of leadership including kevin mcar thi. Sign on a brief that essentially said some states trump states want to throw out the votes of voters in joe biden states. Unprecedented. Its a coup. Hes trying to undo the election. He and others republicans refuse to call the Vice President former Vice President now president elect the president elect. You remember we had a long delay in the transition process. And more over, its not simply that they are pretending its not going on. They are adding credibility. Adding weight to him. With the constant you have to let the process play itself out. As if there were doubt whatsoever about the results. Its very disconcerning and you should have that many members of the house. 18 state attorneys general all republicans of course. That you should have many other republican senators eager to take on this fight. And participating in efforts to interfere and sway Election Officials. As you saw with lindsey graham. Its not just a horrible problem with the president of the United States. Its that an entire party seems to have given up on democracy. How do we tackle this . One of the big challenges is that theres 75 million voters who believe that trump won. How do we actually put this back into the bottle when people are splicing facts and figures. Its a great question. I wish i knew the answer. Part of the issue is that we really werent prepared for this moment. Adequately. My colleague and i wrote an article june 2019 about what would happen in the president refused to accept the result of the election. And refused to concede. We asked members of congress what the plan was. Democrats primarily. Because it was looking even at that point like the president wasnt going to win. No one had a good answer. No one really was able to wrap their head around this idea that the president might refuse to concede. At that point it was were focussed on winning. Thats really only one part of it. Especially when you have 74 Million People who voted for trump. Who believe him. When he says that their votes didnt matter. Obviously some of the people might try to take this to the logical conclusion. If the president doesnt drop the effort, as we saw with the massive protests and the violence that took place in washington d. C. Last night. It could be very ugly. This is something i think that even if the president has been ham handed about this and it hasnt worked out and its incompetent. Lawyers have failed and 55 lawsuits now. Its been completely transparent effort to save face. This is something that moving forward i think democrats need to begin taking seriously. Especially when members of congress and the other side of the aisle are so willing to go along with this. Something that were seeing is individuals that are trying to contest their elections at the local level. Because they are saying i too have been done wrong by the local electoral officials. How does that help erode confidence in the election system and when we look at how we actually fix this, what do we have to do in a bipartisan manner to address something thats very much threatening democracy . It very much matters what the media says and what the Political Class says. It matters that when you have guests on who have signed this brief that you introduce them as individuals who sought to over turn the last election. They should be labeled as people who betrayed democracy. Thats first of all. Second, when nancy pelosi swears in the new house in january, she should make a big deal about this. She should remind people what the oath of office is. Encourage them to renounce their prior action and rhetoric. And its incumbent upon the new president once hes in office to urge republicans to stop this nonsense and explain to the American People he is the legitima legitimate president and if they want to get anything done and maintain credibility they have its time to start behaving like grown ups in a democracy. Theres a lot of people who have a role to play. We have already seen some Election Officials really step up to the plate and we need the rest to step up as well. I want to bring you in and ask directly it almost seems that what trump created is a play book. For the next president that maybe a little more savvy. How do we put language into whats happening and prevent this from actually demoralizing the voter and democracy. This is one of the things that the piece addressed really eloquently. Just because we may not have a specific word for whats happening. Its not quite a coup. That doesnt mean we shouldnt be taking it seriously. That doesnt mean we shouldnt be thinking of ways to describe the subtlety in how the president is looking to under mine the institution. This is something that obviously needs to be addressed by the president elect. And congress. To fix these gaps that allow this to happen. The president has been allowed essentially and attorneys have been allowed to run through rampant through the legal system. Over 50 of their election challenges have fald already. Failed already. Whats the accountability there . Theres a lot that we never experienced before as a democracy. That if the president being as ham handed as he has been if hes replaced by someone who is a bit more competent. They can potentially really succeed in the future in trying to over turn an election. No matter how many times the president loses in court he refuses to acknowledge the reality of his defeat. Even after the Supreme Court dismissed the texas lawsuit seeking to ore turn the election in four states. An elected official in one of the swing states joins me now. Attorney general of michigan. Thank you for joining me. I want to talk about what you have been experiencing ever since you called michigan for president elect joe biden. Its been nonstop these frivolous lawsuits. That we have had to defend. Its been an enormous waste of taxpayer money. We have seen the attorneys make claims that have no kind of basis in fact or law. And we have seen a number of attorneys whether they are the attorneying bringing the cases in michigan or the 19 attorneys general who brought and supported a case in the United StatesSupreme Court. We have seen each and every one of them violate an oath not make misrepresentation and bring frivolous and unjust cases. Each and every one of them has compromised their law license. And its going to be part of their legacy they chose a demagogue over democracy. One of the things our panel noted was how unusual it is for republicans to join the ranks of the president. And signing a piece of paper saying these were legitimate elections or staying quiet. What do you say when it comes to the need for having a trust in the electoral system . Its absolutely essential. If we dont want our democracy to die. If we launch our faith and confidence in the electoral process really what do we have left at that point. This was brought up earlier, its only the office at the top of the ticket where there was fraud but the other elections somehow were not fraudulent. These individuals these congressional representatives they are under mining their own elections. And it makes no sense. Chris krebs was fired by the president. He was appointed by the president. Because he certified the elections. Speak about how dangerous that is to fire individuals based on political calculations. Its what we have seen throughout the entirety of the time that trump has been in office. No matter how much of a loyalist these hand selected individuals are, the second they refuse to follow strict orders for the president , they are excused from their position. And we know that baiill barr isn that position now. Even though hes gone to Great Lengths to compromise integrity and credibility because of this particular president. How will we have faith in any institutions if youre allowed to do this. Thats something we have to evaluate whether or not the executive branch will have that control anymore. To fire these individuals without any cause whatsoever. One of the things i find most disturbing of this is its the firings and denying fact and truth, but its also the incredible danger that they have placed in Public Officials trying to simply do their job. There is a dog whistle targeting individuals to change their mind. Thats unusual for this time. Its not a dog whistle anymore, is it . No longer. Its so dangerous. The reason i ask is my family fled colombia. For speaking truth for a Public Servant was a kin to a death sentence. That is where we have to speak clearly to the American Public how unusual it is for a president and attorney general to go after an individual. Speak to those dangers in your concern. Look at what we have seen just in the state of michigan. In the last several months. Based on the very hateful and dangerous rhetoric of the president and his seeming support of white supremacy. And maly shah organizations. And other extremists. We have had threats to our governor, secretary of state, state leg legislature. To the board of canvassers. Now to the electors who tomorrow people should understand they are meeting tomorrow. And all of lansing is shut down. They shut down the state house and state senate. And most of the state offices at this point including mine. Are going to have to be evacuated or people will not be going to the government buildings as a result of the threats. It wont be the first time that the legislature has been shut down or had to be closed. Literally at this point it seems as though were at the mercy of the individuals. Let me make this point and make it incredibly clear. This is domestic terrorism. Just the threats aalone have a 20 year offense. I have a message for the people making threats. We are looking for you. We will find you and prosecute you and you will be held accountable. Attorney general, do you believe that what the president tried to do is attempted coup . Attempted coup . Yeah. Absolutely. I dont know how you can call it anything but that. Of course all his aiders and abetters and enablers that led support. I dont know what else you can say. This is an effort to take multiple states including mine and to under mine the will of the people. Absolutely to me that is a coup. And all of these individuals that participated should be held accountable. Their voters should recognize what they have done. I dont think any of them earned another term in office. Again, their names and legacy will forever be tainted by their subserve and sycophants to this president. And its disturbing and a sad chapter in american history.
