Storm wreaking havoc on americans. The northeast is getting the brunt of the storm as we speak, including heavy snow and freezing rain. Places like boston still cleaning up from last weeks storm could get an additional 58 inches of storm before the day is over. But it isnt phasing some new york residents. I love it. It makes me feel like im back home in kansas in the winter time. Here it comes boom. And this is breaking records, especially in the midwest. The storm dropped 16. 7 inches in the city of detroit, making it the third heaviest storm and in chicago 19. 3 making it the fifth heaviest. And according to flight aware. Com, 4,000 flights have been canceled. Nbcs ron allen joins me live from boston where he is driving around through the sleet and the snow and the sludge for your entertainment. Ron allen, what is going on out there . Im riding around not driving around which is an important distinction. And it is pretty bad out here. As you can see, this is mass avenue in the south end of boston if you know the area and the roads are still covering. There is some blacktop, you can see it is Getting Better and the temperatures are dropping. We are now at about 22 degrees and i heard a report there is nine inches of snow that has fallen across boston but there will be more north and west of the city and less down along the coast. The coast was hammered last week by the blizzard and the islands, nantucket, Marthas Vineyard fortunately for them they are getting rain today. And the remarkable thing here is everybody is celebrating the super bowl victory by the new England Patriots and they are going to have a march through the city tomorrow from the center of town through city hall and the mayor said it is hon and they are expecting thousands and thousands of people to come out. They are going to have the roads clear and the schools will be safe and so hearty new englanders out celebrating the super bowl and dealing with this. A lot of plows everywhere and the remarkable thing is you see huge piles of snow everywhere. It is just piling up higher and higher. 6, 7, 8 feet in places. They are trying to get rid of it but for now just pushing it to the side and so a lot to deal with and it will only get worse. But the good news is we hope and we think that it will be raining in a few hours. Were getting some sleet and freezing rain so that will help. But still making conditions harsh. But if the snow just stops, i think everybody here will be much relieved. Joy, back to you. Ron allen, looking like the black james bond in that black attire. And as Domenica Davis has been tracking this how much of this misery can we take . A better part of today. For boston you are in the thick of it through this evening. And the winter storm warnings stretching from maine down into philadelphia. So we are dealing with ice basically south of the massachusetts area and another of that that is where were looking at an allsnow event. And as ron allen mentioned, along the coast, they are expecting to get rain which will cause problems. And here where you see the white, it is all snow. So boston, Manchester Portland all snow. And notice bridgeport up to providence where the pink is that is a rainsnow line the freezing rain could ride up the coast. This isnt a great scene airo because scenario because this could freeze and this is a significant icing situation. And the windchills back in minneapolis it feels like zero. Four in boston. The cold weather will persist for the next several days. Here is chicago. It will stay that way through the northeast as well. So icing will be a major concern. I think what we saw in her documentary series after the death, Bobbi Kristina didnt have much support. I think her aunt who is married to her uncle, it was her mothers manager and she was very much involved in her life daytoday. After her mother passed away she didnt have much support for her. Shes estranged from her grandmother sissy and from her father and so she married family. She married nick gordon since he was 12 years old and brought into the family and this is a decision her mother would have wanted her to have to bring them together. And that was controversial. What we are going to see, we are going to see her if action but we dont know what the cause is that happened to her now and we are not trying to link them but ill play a little bit of the link. I dont think we can estimate the amount of pain shes going through and with tabloids constantly reporting on her life and speculating about her weight loss and her marriage and home life and possibly being evicted in 2013 and the first time not the first time shes been hospitalized after her mothers death. We know she was rushed to the hospital right after whitneys death in l. A. Three years ago for having an anxiety attack. And houston died on february 11th three years ago. And he was able to give an update on the search for the american female aid worker who is still being held by isis somewhere around syria. Obviously this is something that is heartbreaking for families and our obligation is to make sure we can do anything to try to make sure that any american citizen is rescued from this situation. Now this follows the saturday release of an isis video showing the reported beheading of the second of two japanese hostages. Meanwhile jordan is holding its breath over another hostage isis has threatened to kill a jordanian pilot who was captured after a bombing run in december. Here to talk about this issa man mohyeldin. So what do we know about the jordanian pilot whose release was tied to this deal between him and kenji goto who was reportedly executed . We dont know much. The jordanian government has been demanding a proof of life video from the pilot to demonstrate he is in fact alive and they are willing they have said they would exchange that jordanian prisoner who they are holding in exchange for the pilot. However, one of the things in the past 72 hours or so that has been a massive challenge for the officials is to determine whether or not the pilot is alive given the fact that the japanese hostages has been executed. The deal they put on the table is for the life of the japanese hostage in exchange for the suspect or the convict being held in jordan. But since that development over the weekend, that the japanese hostage was killed this has been the major focus point of the jordanian government. Thank you very much ayman mohyeldin. Now just a short time ago the president unveiled his nearly 4 trillion budget for the coming fiscal year. He announced the plan to the department of Homeland Security who are upset about the plan on immigration. And it calls for tax cuts and more spending on infrastructure and he is hoping he can work with congress to cut automatic spending known as sequestration. I want to work with congress to replace mindless austerity with ways that are fiscally responsible. And jonathan is from bloomberg. And so he laid down the gauntlet on missile on middle class economy. I think what the president has done here is tried to drive a wedge between republicans in a way that peels some of them off. When you talk about the taxes hes introducing on offshore income, foreign earnings in the future would be taxed a minimum of 19 , parked profits overseas at 14 , to pay for infrastructure spending, hes trying to get the republicans who want to see roads and bridges and mass transit built, i think he sees that as an opportunity. And the same thing with discretionary appropriations, hes offering a 38 billion increase in Pentagon Spending and Domestic Health care education, transportation and housing. Those are areas where there is an agreement but it is an attack by the president to try to split apart the republicans. And here is the budget. It is on two sides of the paper so it is not so thick to try to save trees here. And as you were saying it does put republicans in an interesting decision. You wrote the following, the plan challenges republicans to make political thorny choices between defending current tax rates for the wealthy and obamas proposals to boost spending for the middle class, the tonight and thats exactly the ground democrats want to fight on into 2016. I think that is aimed at 2016, not just for the president ial level and democrats rallying around Hillary Clinton and the congressional level. This is unifying document for democrats. I asked several Administration Officials a few minutes ago if they could identify anything democrats wouldnt like in the budget but they said surely there are some things they would pick out but they couldnt identify any of the big proposals that would hurt democrats. This is president obama trying to get his party behind him as he goes into battle with the Republican Congress over the next couple of years and set up democrats to fight on this income inequality message hes brought out that sect clinton has repeated and messes of congress have repeated. They want to force the republicans to defend these tax cuts for the richest americans when the economy is expanding and force them to keep spending low at that time. Heavy snow and freezing rain are blanketing areas across the northeast. Boston, which was hit hard last week, is expected to hit several more inches today and potentially making the evening commute messy. The storm has claimed one life in massachusetts. A woman hit by a snowplow this morning. Meanwhile, the snowstorm has set records in cities like chicago and detroit. And air travel is being hit hard too. More than 3000 flights have been canceled. What is happening out there . Good afternoon to you, joy. This is round two, second storm. Significant storm in less than a week. This one, winter storm linus leaving a blanket of storm outside. Six inches of snow here today on top of the snow left last week so it is a problem. You see, we are just roughly making through some of the streets here in white plains which is about 25 miles north of the city. Boston, you heard ron allen earlier talk about maybe as much as two feet up in boston. This afternoon is going to be the hard part when the ice comes in. Weve seen a mixture today of some slush and some rain and ice and snow. So it is really changing over rapidly. Potential 2016 candidate Chris Christie may have travelled to london to make a Foreign Policy splash but instead in hot water over vaccines. The new jersey governor who just left a meeting with Prime Minister David Cameron is on a mission to promote business between his state and the u. K. But a statement about vaccine landed him in a debate in whether a vaccine against the measles should be mandatory. Casey hunt joins us live with more on the exclusive interview from london. Casey, how did the governor wind up in this vaccine muddle . Well it was straightforward. He was touring a company here in the u. K. In cambridge actually. The Company Makes a vaccine. And afterward he spoke to reporters and i asked him whether he believes americans should have their kids vaccinated for measles. All i can say is we vaccinated ours. I think it is much more important as a parent than what you think as a public official and that is what we do. But i also understand that parents need to have some measure of choice in things as well. So that is the balance that the government has to decide. So joy, the governor was the Governors Office was quick to clarify his remarks, saying quote, to be clear, the governor believes vaccines are an important Public Health protection and with a disease like measles, there is no question kids should be vaccinated. At the same time, different states require different degrees of vaccination which is why he was called for balance. A pretty quick switch for him after the remark this is morning. And casey, any worries within his camp. This is the same governor who put a nurse from ebola patients put her in a tent and had this extreme reaction to that and now this. Within the Chris Christie camp do they see this as a major stumble . Well look im not sure i would go that far but i do think the speed with which they reacted to what he said shows you they took this pretty seriously and they are concerned about how he initially set himself up in this debate. The centers for Disease Control is warning of a potential large outbreak of the measles. Just last month there were 84 cases in 14 states all linked to the outbreak that started in disneyland last year. But as parents concern grow some blame the antivaccine and in fact the cdc said the the majority of those who contracted the measles were not vaccinated. The president urged parents to vaccinate their kids. Measles is preventible. I understand there are families that in some cases are concerned about the effects of vaccinations. The science is prettyin disputable. Weve looked at this again and again. There is every reason to get vaccinated. Are you telling kids you should get your kids vaccinated . You should get your kids vaccinated. And should kids who get infected by kids that arent vaccinated have the right to sue. And joining me nick bear dr. Common sense and a consultant to tell me a newspaper called the enterprise from california said ultimately what it boils down to for our family is the risk of the vaccines does not outweigh the benefits. Does the science support that belief . No, no. And i would like the people who wrote that commentary to think of it like this. There is so many reasons to get the vaccines done. There is no reason this think it causes autism. And think as a parent how you would feel if your child came down with the measles and you are holding your child, as ive done in the emergency room and they tell you your child is going to die from the disease that can be caused by the measles. Think as a parent how you would feel. You know the vaccine can prevent measles and if you get the vaccine, even if you got the measles, it would lessen the severity of the disease. So i want people to put themselves in this situation. Take the politics out. If it were my child, how would i feel. And nick diamond, there is a column in usa today where alex ber iz ow said people part of the Antivaccine Movement ought to go to jail. He said they are partly to blame for this outbreak and all well agree on is that parents that dont vaccine their kids should go to jail. It is very tough to believe. There are state laws in place that require children to be vaccined against measles for attending school but the issue is the state laws are weakened by exemptions that are easy to exploit. Of course children are not required to be vaccined vaccinated against medical advice or a chronic condition that would weaken their immune system and there are religious exemptions and a number of personal belief exemptions which really require you basically to just attest to certain beliefs and then that will help you get out of having to have your child vaccinated. And dr. Abear, more people are using those exemptions. So look at california. Back in 2000. Fewer than 0. 77 received those exemptions. Last year it was up to 2. 5 . More people are using the exemptions. Is it just quack science or religion or what is going on . People want to make sure that nothing happens to their children and i really understand that. But im the medical director of several institutions and that personal exemption is being used because in the United States if that institution, whether it be a school or a university if they get federal funds you cannot mandate that you inject anybody for any reason to be a part of that institution because that institution receives federal funds. So the issue is why are these people now doing this and the reason why is because of a study done in london by a doctor Andrew Wakefield and we call him mister and not even doctor because he was striped of his license and he did an irresponsible study in which he was paid 600,000 to do a study on 12 kids in london and that is it. And once you do that and people care about their children they dont want their children to get autism and i get that and thats not even proven. And we know the measles is 18 times moreverrelent than the ebola virus. It is very real. And people are able to travel and you have this situation where new york is a state where you have to have your kids vaccinated to go to school and california has looser laws but people can get on a plane and travel. If you are someone who whose child is too young to get vaccinated for the measles and they come into a antivaccinated kids do you have the right to sue if your child gets sick . You certainly do. And that is coming up with the outbreak where the parents are rightly upset at their children being upset by what is known as an easily preventible disease. Hence they do have that right. But it is important to keep in mind, we wouldnt call this a slam dunk lawsuit. There are arguments to be made on both sides. And the biggest difficulty in this lawsuit you have to show a duty exists and in the case law at the moment and in statutes there is no affirmative duty to have your child vaccinated against measles. And there are arguments to the contrary and there is a known outbreak and there is a face of a known risk and it comes down to how well these things can be argumented and whether or not they make it to a courtroom. It could be a situation where if enough people generate enough noise around the lawsuits to get some settlements, this could change the Public Health dialogue. It is pretty amazing. And i think it comes down to what one of my producers said in our morning meeting, would you believe in junk science or get the measles. That is the choice. And i wont ever get married. I couldnt grow up because i died from an accident. The reaction on twitter has been intense and mostly not in a good way. This comment sums it up. Too bad i didnt have nationwide insurance so i could cancel it after that commercial. The company said nationwide has been working with experts for more than 60 years to make things safer. While some did not care for the ad, we hope it served to begin a dialogue to make safe happen for children everywhere. And joining me jay cooper. What is it behind a ad that grabs your attention during the super bowl. There was an audible gasp by my child in the room and i dont think people want to see that in a super bowl. They want to see entertained and they dont want to be freaked out and this ad went there. But at the same time nationwide started trending. So in a way they got a perverse benefit out tv. I dont think the intent was bad but the execution was heavy handed and they got a lot of attention on twitter but it was harshly negative. Lets talk about the over all mood. Every time we went to break during the super bowl the mood wasnt fun and uplifting and sort of campy it was kind of down. Everything was very poignant you had the collide you had the clydesdales. It was very dark but the relative tone was positive in there wasnt a lot of sexist ads and strong affirming ads for women and there was a lot of dadvertizing and on what it means to be a emotionally connected father. A very disney super bowl. And one ad that was positive that advertised a difficult feminine product that was affirming and not depressing. Lets listen. Show me what it looks like to fight like a girl. Now throw like a girl. Throw like a girl. Fight like a girl. What does it mean to you when i say run like a girl. It means run as fast as you can. On the upside i thought that was a great ad. On the downside i dont know what the ad was for. The kids are too young to use the product and it wasnt clear what they were advertising. So is that a win or a loss . I think it is a win. The viral nature on twitter and facebook and you tube was huge. And i think that in general this ad after the year that the nfl had, it was just a strong message to send that women have strong. And women make up 46 of the viewing audience anyhow and they dominate the social chatter around the super bowl so you better click into them and this ad does it effectively. And now my favorite ad of the night. My favorite too. And i loved this and it was for locktite glue. Its me. And if you make a thing or break a thing, it is no problem. If it is broken or it is all right. That was my favorite. Locktite glue saved our marriage. So that was an example of a Small Company that nobody heard of making a huge splash. They spent their entire media budget on this spot and it was such an incredible breath of fresh air that i think it will rocket this company into the mainstream. And so for them to spend that 4. 5 million on an ad that will do well for the company, it was a winwin. Does it work . Because i remember go daddy, it was getting talked about, and as they blow their entire budget on one Super Bowl Ad . It does. This game that broke all records, the most tweets 265 million interactions and posts on facebook. Does that change the strategy with the social media . Oh, yeah. It helps to justify the outlay of the 4. 5 because they can get a longer runway for the social buzz before and after so it extends the week of the super bowl week. And how do you think the big spenders during the super bowl the anheuserbuschs of the world, did they do better this year . I dont think so. They were not bad ads but they werent great.
