physical. and i'll be releasing when the numbers come in. hopefully they're going to be good. i think they're going to be good. i feel great. but when the numbers come in, i'll be releasing very -- very, very specific numbers. the report should be finished this week. >> again, that was at the beginning of the week when he said that. we're now told trump's lab results will not be revealed on dr. oz after all. the campaign now saying the information will be released, quote, shortly. now, just over a month ago, donald trump also promised that his wife mal melania trump woul hold a news conference. this came, saying, with 100% certainty, i went through the legal process when arriving in the usa. potential trouble in new york. new york state's attorney general confirming he opened an inquiry into trump's charity foundation. >> we started communications with them back in june. we didn't have a press conference. we didn't have a press release. we didn't try to grandstand on this. there were allegations they made contributions to charities that now say they never received the money. >> got a lot to get to. we begin with nbc's halle jackson. she's covering the trump campaign. she join us from north canton, ohio where trump will hold a rally. we just got this in. want to play what kellyanne conway, trump's campaign manager, what she said this morning about the whole plan to release his information. >> no, he was going to talk about the fact that he had a physical. and that -- and what the results are or what the doctor may have told him to date. i wasn't present at his physical. i think on dr. oz, i'll talk about other concerns for america. he will, you know, if he is asked a question about his health, or his -- i'm sure he'll be happy to answer it. >> what are your sources telling you? >> the medical records are apparently going to be released, tam ron, not today, and i'm quoting here, soon. you heard kelly anne conway talk about it in the last hour or so in that interview that trump today on oz is expected to have a general discussion about health and well being, family, that kind of thing. a more broad discussion. and not a dive into some of that medical information. we are being told or we understand that trump is planning to release those medical records. this week at some point. but there's a question mark obviously until that happens, so the health issue is an interesting one because until this point, all we have is this four paragraph letter from trump's doctor who's also a gastroebt roll gist saying if elected trump will be the healthiest president ever, raising questions about other medical information about trump who, we have to note if elected, would be one of the oldest presidents. but we don't know his family history. what medications he's on. things like his cholesterol levels. the type of information we have had for presidential nominees for major parties in the past. bottom line, i hate to say it, it question marks about when this will be released. and what we're going to see. the actual information we're going to get. >> let's go back before hillary clinton and the medical emergency or episode i should say at the 9/11 memorial. >> sure. >> before that, donald trump and his supporters were calling on her to release her medical information. implying that the cough was something more. and he at the time said i will release my medical information if you release your medical information. all week long, we talked about this big reveal on the dr. oz show, that we would learn more medical information about donald trump. the campaign never corrected anyone. the campaign never said, hey, to you or any reporter, you got it wrong, we have no plans on doing that, right? >> well, dr. oz himself also talked about this interview, right, that we've known about this interview for several days. and dr. oz said he wouldn't be, you know, asking questions the campaign didn't want him to ask. there was speculation perhaps dr. oz would review some of the information from that recent physical. but, tamron, bottom line, we don't know what doctor performed this physical, where it happened, any other information. we won't know until trump decides. until he chooses to release this. >> okay, also going back to the choice of the campaign. donald trump said melania trump, the campaign would give more information about her immigration history. that news conference never happened but we got this tweet out today. >> so this tweet is from melania trump. it is a letter from an immigration attorney who has worked with trump organizations in the past as he notes in the letter he's represented companies owned or partially controlled by trump. he says he has reviewed melania's immigration records. a couple of notes, yes, donald trump on august 9th i believe promised melania trump would hold a news conference to talk about her immigration status. it is now mid-september. that has not happened. number two, the records themselves haven't been released. this attorney apparently looked over these records and made some determinations that no laws were broken based on different documentation. but, again, those records have not been reviewed by any kind of an independent outside organization. that said, it is putting melania trump's immigration status in the spotlight. all of this coming out on the same day as this inquiry for example into the trump foundation as these questions about trump's medical information as well. >> going back to the inquiry on the trump foundation. i know the campaign is pushing back, saying the new york attorney general who has endorsed snyderman this is political, they also said that about the trump university investigation as well. >> they're basically saying this is partisan politics. calling snyderman a partisan hack. a history dating back several years. they tangleled over trump university. he's hit schneiderman in the past for this. so the campaign and the surrogates too, surrogates we've spoken with, supporters of donald trump, will say this is simply partisan, it is democrats trying to go after donald trump to create, you know, smoke where there's not fire. fire where there's not smoke, i should say. he spoke about that this morning. i'm paraphrasing here. but something if a cop drove by a democrat who was speeding, the cop would still have to give the democrat a ticket. basically trying to defend himself against these allegation of playing politics. >> also, revealed, hacked e-mails from former secretary of state colin powell. then slammed donald trump. the clinton campaign and the congressional investigation into what happened in benghazi. the e-mails published by a website with reported links to russian hackers. nbc's peter alexander joins us now from near hillary clinton's home in chappaqua, new york, with the details on whether these e-mails reveal. off the top, colin powell not denying these are his e-mails. >> he confirms the awe then ticht of these emays to nbc news. he says of these hackers that they have a lot more as well. but these are damning, some might say, for both hillary clinton and donald trump. real sharp criticism for trump himself. real expression s about the clinton campaign. from the four-star general who served three republican presidents. here is some of what colin powell said about donald trump in an e-mail to a former staffer that came in june. he called trump a, quote, national disgrace and an international pariah. to the same former staffer in august, he spoke of the birther movement, that trump was sort of spearheading for so long and said, yep, the whole birther movement was racist, but specifically about the clinton e-mail scandal, he didn't hold back on that issue as well. here is some of what he said, in effect, try to discourage the clinton campaign, discourage the clinton campaign from dragging him into this in any way. he wrote, i've told hillaries minions repeat lid they were making a mistake trying to drag me in. the media isn't fooled and she is getting crucified. now about an issue that's haunted hillary clinton through the course of this campaign season. so many of the attacks focused not just on here e-mails but what happened in benghazi where four americans and a u.s. ambassador were killed. colin powell wrote the following to condoleezza rice in an e-mail an he said, benghazi is a stupid witch-hunt. we reached out to the trump campaign for any response to what colin powell said, that national disgrace language. so far from the campaign at least on this topic, we have not heard back. >> peter alexander, thank you. while hillary clinton prepared to go back on the campaign trail tomorrow, her team is out with a new ad this morning. seizing on the new york attorney general's inquiry into donald trump's foundation. >> while he attacks one of america's top charities, his foundation has been fined for an illegal donation. he sent florida aj pam bondi thousands from his foundation just as she was considering an investigation into his sham university. she cashed the check, blocked the case and he tried to cover up the donation. >> nbc's kristen welker is following the story and joins us from chappaqua, new york. this ad is interesting. so many of the ads the campaign believes have resonated have been the focus of donald trump's tone, the image to what he's presented to children with some of his language. this goes after this foundation which is interesting. >> it is interesting, tamron. the clinton campaign thinks they have finally found a way to reverse this issue which is peter was just talking about, which is huaunting them, and pu the focus on donald trump, look at how quickly they were up with that new ad. it was just overnight, released 5:00 a.m. this morning. and of course secretary clinton's top surrogates waste nod time pouncing. president obama out on the campaign trail in philadelphia yesterday. mocking donald trump for some of the allegations against his foundation. namely that he paid for a six-foot photo of himself with the foundation's money so it's a little preview of of what you can expect to see in the coming weeks. if you think about it, those two issues that have really haunted secretary clinton, her e-mails and the foundation, and have really fed into voter's lack of trust in her. so the campaign, hoping they can neutralize this issue, which has been a real problem for her. particularly important, as you head into the final weeks of this campaign. >> let's talk about the campaign today. as mentioned, she returns tomorrow, but her top surroga surrogates, her strong bench out today. >> well, that's right. you have bill clinton out on the campaign trail for her in nevada. he's of course one of her biggest surrogates. and this is really going to be an all hands on deck approach by democrats by the way tamron in the coming days. i've been talking to clinton campaign officials who say she feels better every day and she's itching to get back into the game. let's look what the we can expect when she does get back out on to the trail. she'll be in north carolina tomorrow. then heads to the congressional hispanic caucus institute dinner in washington, d.c. tomorrow night. then friday, the black woman's symposium. on saturday, a big event, the congressional black caucus dinner. huge annual event in washington, d.c. you know you and i have both been at that event. she's easing back out on to the campaign trail. tomorrow's a pretty busy schedule. i anticipate she's going to take some questions from the press when she does get on that campaign plane with reporters. >> let me bring in our panel. "washington post" political columnist dana millbank. former rnc chairman and msnbc political analyst michael steele. there's been a lot of analysis at this point this really isn't about policy. donald trump talks about his child care plan. hillary clinton rolled hers out in 2015 despite the claim from donald trump. but this is about trust. and this is the first ad from the clinton team focused in on this issue again of trust of donald trump or lack thereof and not temperament. what's your take on that strategy? >> i think it's a misdirect for the campaign. i mean it just focuses people back on the fact that they don't trust her. and i think this particular play is not going to have the kind of impact that they hope it will. trying to shift this conversation to, you know, the trump foundation, trusting what he did with the resources there, et cetera, is not quite the same. trust issue is baked in for hillary. i think they need to stay with that narrative. but this kind of thing i think just draws the attention back to her more so than refocussing a different conversation on him. >> michael, here you have just today, melania trump immigration news conference never happened. we have the tweet from the attorney who said he's seen her papers but we can't see her papers. donald trump never denied the reports that he would release his medical information on dr. oz show. now we're hearing that's not the case. of course we know the taxes are not going to be released in the next few weeks. why is it never a trust issue it seeps for him? >> i think because you've had 30 years of baking in that mistrust with hillary clinton. donald trump is new on the political scene. as one person said this weekend, the media's more obsessed. >> let me play what he said in philadelphia just yesterday. >> you want to debate foundations and charities? one candidates foundation has saved countless around the world. the other candidate's took money and bought a six-foot tall painting of himself. i mean, he had the taste not to go for the ten-foot version. >> 30 years. honestly, a lack of good will, whatever you want to describe it. this notion we've known her longer is that's an issue of trust. we've not known donald trump. you can meet someone and have a bad feeling and then get confirmation of what you think. what the clinton campaign is doing now is not going to change impressionings about hillary clinton. however the latest revelations by my colleagues at the post really do add to the narrative trump is something of a fraud in business with charity, as a politician. it may not make anybody trust hillary more but will justifiably make people trust trump less. >> what do you make of the report pence met privately with some republican senators including mike lee, ted cruz, john mccain, and they all expressed some concerns? we know lee and cruz have not endorsed trump and senator lee asked pence why he didn't renounce david duke and the so-called alt right movement, that it was an interesting and sometimes tense meeting there. >> yeah, it reflects the pressure and tension that exists. i think pence has now been that con duet through which the frustrations are expressed. the republican leadership and the republican party as a whole need more declarative affirmation from the candidate and campaign when it companies to issues related to waste. david duke is not only deplorable. there's a whole lot of other stronger words. how it is so outside of who we are as republicans. and that pressure is i think growing. where the senate looks like they don't need anything that weakens their grip any further in keeping control of the senate down ballot so these things do add up and that was expressed in the meeting. >> people thought the deplorable comment or the trump campaign thoughthey had an opening here. what does it say about the election that we're on to something else and the opening might not have been as vast as they thought? >> it isn't as wide as they thought and they squandered it to some extent by the inability to call this very deplorable man deplorable. that's been a problem for them. also in the first place what hillary clinton was saying. as i've written, you could make a case that half of trump supporters fit into this. what nobody can deny is there's a sub tan chul part of trump's following that fits this category. the fact pence is out there saying we're not embracing, refusing to use that word, it led to validation which clinton is saying is ultimately true. >> we've got these solid numbers out. it says the largest single year increase in median household income since 1967. hourly pay increased by 2%. poverty and income inquality still more extreme than most developed countries. however, inside the city, up 7.3%. rural areas, down 2%. when we look at the conversation of this outrage or this anger or people who are voting, yes, rural areas still struggling, but for the large part this economy has recovered under the obama administration and does that make it difficult? >> just the thumb nail on this is, real quick, those are good numbers. and it's about time and it's really good to see. i think we should all as americans applaud that, you know, the middle of the country, the middle class is beginning to see some turn around. here's the rub. here's the underbelly of that. you still have a significant number of people who had a full-time job but now have two part-time jobs. this pressure when it companies compa comes to what play ghs this narrative. a relevant part of the conversation for a lot of americans. >> going back to the substantive things we can talk about, the economy, this is what we discuss in 2008, 2012, and here are strong numbers. under democratic leadership at least as far as the white house. >> they are surprising numbers, pleasant surprise. i think they have to be careful to some extent. while this is -- numbers are very good if you look at it in the aggregate sense. there are people being left behind. these are the rule, the less educated, the people who are rallying behind trump. you don't want to have the democrats out there cheerleading. there is more to be done. >> nice beard, dana milbank, i hadn't seen that. >> thank you. >> coming up, more on the inquiry by the new york attorney general. it comes after the "washington post" investigation found the donation donated to charities that say they never received the money. here?
