Study, hillary hurt many women. Shes married to a man who got impeached for lying. And hillary was an enabler, and she streets these women horribly. Just remember this, some of those women were destroyed not by him but by the way Hillary Clinton treated them after everything went down. Joining me nbc news correspondent Kristen Welker and genevieve wood. And e. J. Ian, why the right went wrong. Thank you everyone. Good morning. Kristen, im going to start with you, obviously, donald trump is not going to run a conventional campaign. Right. Weve already had a bizarre daily beast headline that says among the things we can expect is that Hillary Clinton is a lesbian, a murderer and campaign addict. Is saying im going to run my race and not respond is that actually what the campaign plans to do . No, i think theyre going to respond to some things. I think asymmetrical is key. Theyre waking up every day and saying we are expecting the unexpected. They are going to get in the mud when they bring up bill clintons past indepressions. No. You heard that. With victim and muslim, theyve run away with a lot of those using comments in ads. Yeah. And then his taxes which is the latest point theyve been hitting him. Of course, he said hes not going to release his tax return, and people saying whats in them . Lets play a little bit of an ad released from the Clinton Campaign going at the taxes that kristen just mentioned. Were maybe im going to do the tax returns when blk does his birth certificate. The state of hawaii released my official long form birth certificate. [ buzzer ]. If i decide to run for office, ill produce my tax returns, absolutely. I am officially running for president of the United States. [ buzzer ]. Are you get anything closer to releasing your tax returns . Well, im thinking about it. I cant do it untilled audit is finished. Irs has made it clear that the audit is not a bar to public release. It is entirely your choice. Its none of your business. E. J. , in dwro great book, is what we saw in that ad what youre talking about, sort of making fun of it satirically or does it not take serious enough some of the issues that donald trump presents to the country . I think, i think making people chuckle a little built is usually a way to get their attention. I think its very important that trump not about allowed to become a normal candidate because he isnt. I think were already seeing the words that the Hillary Clinton campaign is going to want to attach to him. I have dangerous, intolerant, divisive, risky, unreliable and weird. The weird, i think, may become more important. We that story about donald trump playing a spokesman on a telephone call. How many other things are there like this . I think the other thing is that enemies of the clintons have this habit of overplaying their hands. And there are certain attacks on the clintons that might well work. But when they get into this strange land of cocaine use and all of that kind of stuff, i think they lose a lot of voters. Because, remember, all of these attacks will rally a lot of republicans who would never vote for clinton anyway. But he needs them, trump does. But he really needs to persuade swing voters. And sort out of the box, out of this world kind of attacks i dont think are going to help him. Genevieve, to that point, one of the things that donald trump needs is to close this incredible gender gap that hes opened up. Speaking of weird i want to play some of Donald Trumps new audio that we got that kind of go to e. J. s point. Lets start with donald trump on stern talking about women and their anatomy. I never get this thing with lady di. I know you got this thing lady di was truly a women of great beauty. Would you have slept with her . Without hesitation. The i. Q. , the beauty, the skin. You know who has really changed, nicklet sheridan. Shes a solid 4. What a drop. She wasnt a 10. At the end of the day, i think most people vote based only the person theyre voting for or against is going to help them get another job. That ultimately is what makes a person push a certain thing. With any other person thats ever won for president. The Clinton Campaign expect at any point to become a campaign about taxing and Economic Policy . I dont think so. I think theyre going to try to make it about that as much as possible. The question about donald trump, every day during the primary, will these controversial comments that he said either now or in the 90s hurt him. And the answer is, no. His poll numbers kept going up. The question that were faced with right now and the Clinton Campaign is trying to figure out is he going to have the same effect in the general election. Thats why you see her so aggressively courting women voters. Shes had a lot of events that has been targeted at those swing voters, independent women and also republicans. You go back into the Barry Goldwater who made outrageous statements like the Civil Rights Act. It seemed not to hurt him. He seemed to have momentum. And then he lost in incredible landslide. Can you see what genevieve has thought agency a normalized Campaign Issue . I dont think with a campaign with donald trump can ever be normal. Barry goldwater was in trouble from the start. Its kind of unfair that the late Barry Goldwater, whose views im critical of, back in 64, compare to trump. With trump, hes been all over the lot which means he not only faces opposition from democrats and independents, a lot of conservative, out there openly saying we dont trust his views either. Because we dont know what they are. And in terms of women, yes, hes been able to get some votes among republican women. But his numbers among independent and Democratic Women are terrible. Hes losing women in some polls by 20 or 30 points because women resist extremists. And all of that stuff you showed on the air is not going to excite them to vote for donald trump. So he has an enormous problem among women. Ill give you the last word on this. The question also is can members of the Republican Party align themselves with this person, with all of the things that he said, with all of the views on the bases that you said. This is also on the integrity of the Republican Party, no . Well, i think at the end of the day, it comes down to this is who the nominee is. It looks like is this what its going to be for sure at this point and do you think hed be a better president in terms of his policy than Hillary Clinton. Its not as though bill and Hillary Clinton are the cleanest folks who have ever run for office. The idea that somehow shes very pristine and has no wrongdoings or allegations of wrongdoings or scandals in her background is a far stretch. Shes got a big problem there. One of Hillary Clintons biggest problems is that people dont trust her. Even when you look at democratic voters in polls. All of those coming out of the bernie versus hillary magic have all said, when you ask which candidate do you trust, shes in the very bottom of numbers. That for Donald Trumps case has helped them. This has to be about issues if youre a voter, a conservative, to look at who is going to be the best with all of the policies you care about. I think Hillary Clinton would be a third term of barack obama which i dont want him to be. And donald trump, he may not be as good as i want him to be, but better than she. There is audio of her saying the things that donald trump is saying i suspect that your party would not let her live it down. Up next, the battle for kentucky, why Hillary Clinton is ramping up her ads mending there. Stay with us. Are those made with allbeef, karen . Yeah, theyre hebrew national. The day she walked out of the secretary of the States Office she was the most popular public figure in america. She had the highest positives and lowest negatives. She was the most trusted public figure in america. [ applause ] what happened . Politics happened. Former president bill clinton hid the campaign trail this week in kentucky where Bernie Sanders will face off on tuesday. And designed to engage in any spending the Clinton Campaign has earmarked over 135,000 in tv ads to air next week. Kentucky the third coal mining state in the u. S. Is considered tough territory for clinton particularly after a roark mark of moving away from fossil fuel in which she talked about, quote, putting a lot coal miners out of business. She apologized for the remark. And we thank you both for being here. Im going to start with you, its interesting to see bill clinton deploy to kentucky because there was a time when bill clinton who used to get deployed to black churches and to africanamerican spaces. Shes now become a surrogate for the Clinton Campaign among White Working Class voters. That shifts because it does mirror the shift in Hillary Clintons campaign season. Absolutely. So hes definitely deployed in different ways. And shes still incredibly popular amongst africanamerican voters. For the same time, quite a bit of time since at least 2008, bill clinton has actually been used in a particular way where she talks to white voters. He appeals. He appeals to white voters, especially white men. So theres a connection there and theres this idea that hell be able to speak to them in a way that other surrogates cant and havent done in the past. Jimmy, you have a state since 1986, the last time bill clinton ran for president. Bill clinton won it in 96. Then something happened. By 2000, its lightly shifted to be more republican and increasingly become more and more republican to the point where barack obama lost it quite candidly. It was 30. 3 for brac brarack o and 55. 2 for mitt romney. This is how nonobama democrat that state will become. This is her talking about who she voted for. Did you vote for president obama in 2008 and 2012 . You know, this election isnt about the president , its about we put kentuckians back to work. I was actually a delegate for Hillary Clinton. I think im a clinton democrat through and through. I know there are some members of this Editorial Board that do as well. 12k3w whats going on . Im not going to answer that question. Look, kentucky has shifted as the south has shifted. This is a fact of life. But theres also something look, there are two things happening here. The Good Old Boy Network is the Good Old Boy Network is what it is. You cant get around that in the commonwealth of kentucky. And the demographics of kentucky arent changing that much. You just had a democratic governor leave the governorship, and republicans in for the first time in a long time. Local politics, democrats are still in play but on a National Level they are not. But there is something happening in or southern states, virginia, a guy named barack won virginia twice. The seat of the confederacy, he won florida twice. He lost South Carolina and georgia with 48 both times. Yeah. That didnt happen in kentucky. That didnt happen in West Virginia. Again, the demographics are not changing in those coal miner states. Coal issue is an important issue. Obviously, these two states West Virginia and kentucky is the heart of the coal company that have lost a devastating amount of jobs. Deploys the clintons there seems to be the right thing to do . Right. Hillary clintons comments about coal mining and the coal Mining Industry have not sat well in those areas that have high coal populations or labor populations. And so, the idea is to send out bill clinton to really oppose that to counter the narrative thats coming out that Hillary Clinton doesnt care about us. I do think its interesting, though, in the primaries, the people who are democratic working class voters are starting to look at in some sections to Bernie Sanders who is actually much harsher on policy than Hillary Clinton. Theres really Something Else going on, i think its about this idea about who the democ t Democratic Party stands for in terms of the working class white man. Bill clinton is trying to speak to that. Lets talk to health care. Hillary clinton did not get it through. Now, running it through obamacare. You talk about steve beshear, the former governor of kentucky, implemented obamacare. Some people didnt know it was obamacare. And 85,000 in 2015, the Current Governor matt bevin is threatening to end it. Medicaid, 1. 4 Million People have signed up for the Medicaid Expansion in 2016. How important is the clinton brand in terms of selling the idea of continuing health care, is that a powerful message . Well, as long as its not called obamacare, she can sell the hell out of it, right . The president of the United States could literally change his name to Ronald Reagan. Michelle could change her name to nancy reagan, he could become a republican and they would still hate his guts. Thats just going to be a factor and you cannot change that. If you say its not obamacare, its kynect. Whatever its called. Its helping out the working class families its obamacare. Seriously, there has to be some sort of reality check on this kind of stuff. But at the end of the day, they only have obama to beat up until january next year. Then they have to figure out what to do when theres not a black man in the white house. Its going to be fascinating to see whether the guy who signed nafta can be successfully for the candidate who is a free trader. I worked on that, trust me, it was all bill clinton. Clearly, the clintons think they can pull off a win in kentucky. Thank you very much, my friends. Look, its no secret that donald trump and i have had our differences. We talked about those differences today. Thats common knowledge. The question is, what is it for me to do to unify the Republican Party in all strains of conservative wings in the party. We had a very good and encourages and productive conversation on just how to do that. I dont mind going through a little bit of a slow process. Its a very big subject. We have a lot of things. I think for the most part, we agree on a lot of different items. And were getting there. Okay. So donald trump and speak are paul ryan are not yet bosom buddies but this week seemed to make progress in completing the public unification of the Republican Party. The last step before Donald Trumps former takeover at the yengs in cleveland. There was no kumbaya moment. No joint photo op and no endorsement from ryan who says its too soon for that. I think this is going in a positive direction. And i think this is the first very encouraging meeting. Again in 35 minutes you dont mitigate all of the prospects on the issues that were talking about. Which issues and principles are ryan talking about start with medicare and social security. Ryan wants vouchers, trump does not. Trump wants to send all undocumented immigrants back be ryan doesnt think thats possible. Trump is open the to minimum wage, ryan is opposed. Ryan supports free trade agreements and trump opposes that. Ryan says his policy team is meeting with trumps policy team to hash things out. As for wreince priebus, who wil serve as the chairman of the convention, trump will do what he wants. Up next, the voter mail, truth or fiction. laughing theres nothing like making their day. So, if we can do it in minnesota, we can do it in north dakota. That was Bernie Sanders in fargo, north dakota. Talking about the big win and the lashing he cave to Hillary Clinton in the state of minnesota indeed he did. The beltway narrative about this race was Hillary Clinton have a white voter problem because of how big Bernie Sanders won. Well, lets take a look at the question of whether or not that means that Hillary Clinton has an actual white voter problem that could lead to her deficit in november and make it hard for her to win. Lets take a look at our friend the map here, this is all the states that voted so far. Including the states that have the highest percentage of white voters. Meaning 90 is white. States of vermont, new hampshire, iowa and West Virginia. As you can see by the color coding that shows yellow for Bernie Sanders and blue for Hillary Clinton, Hillary Clinton only won half of those states. Its got 90, due to the one that Bernie Sanders won has got more. Does that mean that Hillary Clinton will probably lose voters in november. Yes, she did. Democrats always always lose the white vote. You have to go back to our good friend Lyndon Johnson to find a democratic candidate who was successful and won the presidency by winning the majority of white voters. Lindon johnson did extremely well. He signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and democrats have been essentially losing the white vote ever since. Jimmy carter about 47 of the white vote. You go to bill clinton the first time he ran and won got only about 39 of the white vote. He did better the second time he won. You then get to barack obama who becomes president in 2008 with the largest percentage of white voters since jimmy carter. He actually took 43 of the white vote by the time barack obama runs for reelection in 2012 he goes way down. He only gets 39 of the white vote and still becomes president. Despite the fact he was running against the guy who besides Ronald Reagan who topped out with 65 in 1994. Next up mitt romney, 59 and he still loses the election by 5 million votes. Bottom line, democrats can win the white house without winning the majority of white voters which is what theyve been doing since 1964. To put it another way, with emojis, barack obama becoming president was able to do so with just about three, half the emojis here. And he still becomes president of the United States. Whereas, for republicans to win, theyve got to win, take off a little guy here. Theyve got to get almost seven of these little emoji guys to become president. Why is that . Its because of the new shape of the american electorate. And the percentage of white voters that are a part of it. White voters going all the way back to 1976 with the jimmy carter election, theyre 89 of the vote. And that percentage has been going down, down, a little up, and then down ever since. To the point where by 2016, white voters are expected to be only 69 of the electorate. And were going to have a record share of the electorate that will be nonwhite. Its expected to be 30 . What does that mean for the election thats coming up . It means that democrats can actually win by only winning about that much of the white vote. And they can still manage to win the white house. Does Hillary Clinton have a white voter problem, lets listen to john boehner who i think put it best. I dont know how you can insult, you know, twothirds of the american women, insult every Minority Group known to man and expect to get elected there just arent enough white males to elect you. Back with me, this has been the problem, you wrote a terrific book about black republicans, sort of their decline out of the Republican Party. You really have seen democrats emerge with the appear that can win the white house without getting a 50 or better majority of white voters. Exactly. So, i think you said it best, when you said, you know, they have to get 70 or more of the white vote. And let me tell you this, it is incredibly, incredibly rare for that to happen. So, it doesnt hurt us. As you said, the highest, or actually what a lot of people dont realize the highest was richard 96en in 1972, and he gets 68 of the white vote. Ronald reagan gets 66 in 84. Again, its really hard to do that. I think what were seeing right now is that there is a pushway, and just demographically, were seeing you cant run on factors any more that exclude people who are becoming an integral part of the voting body politics. And despite that, e. J. , is it the narrative that the race is a lot closer than people think. The quinnipiac came out that showed tight race information the states of florida, ohio and pennsylvania. I will point out one of the things they did, you have Hillary Clinton squeezing through these elections and Bernie Sanders doing better against donald trump. But if you look at the specific quinnipiac state polls they overestimated what they believe to be the white share of electorate in 2 to 4 of the matchups. If you were to put that where the consensus seems to be, the not that close, e. J. No, whats important about the polls if you go back to 2012 a lot of republicans and fox news commentators said mitt romney is going to win because they were looking at polls that overestimated the share of the electorate that was going to be white. I think its important to look at the white vote in a different way because it differs vastly by region. If you take more liberal states like massachusetts, oregon, barack obama did very well there among white voters. 57 , massachusetts, for example. In the deep south, and thats why the white numbers look the way they are, voting is still polarized by racing. President obama in 2012 got 15 of the white vote in alabama. Only 10 in mississippi. The key is a democrat candidate needs a certain share in the swing states. In ohio, president obama managed to get 41 of the white vote. 36 of the white male vote. So you need a democratic candidate needs a minimal vote among whites. And in this election, because of what we talked about earlier, there could be such a swing against trump among women of all races, that they would have to he may have to win 90 of the white male vote to win this election which is underscores leahs point. Its a very, very tough climb for him. And ill go to you on this, there has been a lot of focus on what will happen to women. Particularly white women, we presume women of color are overwhelmingly for Hillary Clinton. If you look at president obama, he lost married white women by double digits. He lost young white women by huge margins. White catholics, every shape of the white vote. If barack obama did that poorly even with white women, white married women, and still won, how does donald trump put together a better number than the record breaking number of mitt romney . Well, part of the reason is that barack obama did well with other groups, young. Not my voters. Not all young voters. Single women, i think he won broadly. But you have to look at everybody as a whole group, right . The reality is, democrats such as barack obama having been winning married women for years, they have voted republican. I think e. J. Make ace ves a ve point you really do have to look at the state. National polls are interesting and you can learn from them but what do the individual states look at in terms of demographics, whether by gender or whether by race. The candidates have to look at this. Hillary will have to put together a hodgepodge of voters in different states so she can come out with a win same thing for donald trump. I really think you have to look region by region, state by state, to see what the makeup is and how you need to break out the vote. Leah and genevieve well be bark with you. Thank you to e. J. While democratic establishment types have backed his opponent congressman patrick murphy. That includes Senate Minority leader harry reid who didnt just endorse murphy but back in february called on grayson to group out due to an ongoing situation with his financial activities. Reid spoke this week and grayson used the opportunity to confront harry reid and demand that he say his name. It got so heated that ris staff brought in his security detail. When grayson demanded to know why reid had despairaged him in the media, reid reportedly described and said because its true and i want you to leave. Heres how the office explained the exchange, quote, senator ri has been that hes a Cayman Islands hedge fund from his Congressional Office in order to line his own pockets because these things are true, as established by 74 pages. Joining me now from florida is alan grayson. Congressman, thank you for being here. I really appreciate it. Lets start with that confrontation with harry reid. Oh, got to start you got to start you got to start with correcting the record, joy. Were going to talk about the substance of it. Exactly what harry reid tried to do me, smear me. Every single case where the Ethics Committee decided not to form an investigative subcommittee. There was no investigation, ever, joy, ever. This investigation is ongoing, right . This is not over . Its an ongoing ethics investigation . Joy, no, listen to me, as i just told you, they decided not to form an investigative subcommittee. In the entire history of the office of congressional ethics, involving hundreds of cases theres never been a case where they didnt form an investigative committee. Thats it, joy. You and harry reid both need to stick to the truth. Lets stick to the truth and the allegations with harry reid ill talk about that if you like. Id like to have to ask you questions. Just to be an conversation, i have to ask you questions that way we can have an exchange. Joy, youre forcing a lot of bad facts into your questions. Thats what i have to correct you each time. No joy, there you go again. Joy, i didnt create the documents, theyre not from my hedge fund. Is it not from your hedge fund, your name is on it . There you go again, joy. Joy, you are completely m misinformed. Hold on, im going to go back again. Youre sayings that is not the marketing document from your hedge fund . No, theyre not. That is correct, theyre not. Here you are just like harry reid smearing me. What are we looking at then . What is that that were looking at . It looks to me like its a performance report prepared by a third party. But you just said that it was a document that i prepared and the hedge prepared. Its simply not correct. Hold on, let me read a quote from the same exact article. It doesnt say a third party. We, we capitalize on markets in turmoil due to political disasters. This is actually in a piece of marketing material from the hedge fund. No, it is not. Show me one person that ever tlee received that document. Who is it marketing . Its in your hedge fund. Nobody has been contacted since i was elected to congress. Joy, why are you continuing to because actually if you look at the metadata for that document that document didnt even exist in 2013. It was created in 2016. Go ahead and investigate that. Okay. Hold on. Its interesting that the document has a date 2013 and it wasnt even in existence until 2016. Its a document dated 2013 with your dmam on it, with the name grayson fund. Youre saying that the coveringal Ethics Committee made up this document. In a 74page ethics report . No, its not. As i was trying to explain to you, my political opponent and supporters have filed a serious ethics complaint against me. It was filed against the office of congressional ethics is like a conveyor belt, the Little League of conventional ethics. They take everything they receive. They pass on to the Ethics Committee which is the major league, the Ethics Committee decided not to form an investigative committee. Why do you feel compelled to spread the lies . I feel compelled to talk about the report that you no, there you go again. Youre saying that the marketing materials are not no, you just showed a document that has a date they werent even marketing documents. You just showed a document that says 2013 document. The other allegation in the 74page report is that a member of your Congressional Staff actually worked on as a part of this fund . Did anybody from your Congressional Staff actually do any work on it . I have one employee who worked one day a week, and she works four days a week. There might be somebody wrong if they worked for the fund and werent paid by the fund.
