Somewhere else. My daughter has autoimmune disorder and i try to protect her as much as i can. They said it must be tough, dont see your family for a while. Thought to myself, could be worse, could be a situation i dont go home at all, ever. Thank the lord im still okay. Now is the time to toughen up, everybody, fight and win. Ill continue to fight alongside my fellow nurses and doctors and rts and service people, everybody in the hospital. We will win, fight on. That is manny, emergency medicine nurse working in southern california. Heres dr. Rishi ratten, trauma surgeon working in south florida. One of the things that keeps coming up is analogy to aids epidemic in early 1980s before we fully understood the disease, the transmission risks, and when there were no medicines that could treat hiv. If you look at fast 50 years with hiv only about 50 Health Care Workers have contracted hiv on the job. But last few months of the coronavirus epidemic in United States, over have contracted coronavirus. Some have died. In earliest weeks of the epidemic in south florida one of my close colleagues i worked with died from coronavirus. Just last week i had a colleague, we shared patients every once in a while. He also died of coronavirus before he could get any meaningful treatment. The fear that permeates our daytoday work, knowing that weve lost colleagues already, seeing our colleagues on full life support in the icu and wondering if were going to be next, looking around at our teams and wondering whos not going to make it through this is sometimes overwhelming. We try really hard to focus at work because we dont have the time to process that. But at the end of the shift, when we peel off our ppe and the mask and go home to wash our hands and shower, you cant help but think about whos next, is it my friend who i just signed out to to take over my shift . Is it going to be me . The way that this pandemic is infecting and killing u. S. Health care workers hasnt really been seen in our lifetime and its very scary. Dr. Rattan in south florida. As the coronavirus death toll in the United States passed 50,000 today, the number is 51,523 americans have now been killed by this virus in not much more than a month, the doctors and nurses treating coronavirus patients coasttocoast are themselves putting their lives on the line to do this work, to try to keep their fellow americans alive. And theyre own fear of getting infected while they do this work to save the rest of us is very humbling for us civilians. It inspires something, its more than gratitude, im not quite sure how to describe it. But i can show you something. I can show you youre among fellow americans who feel that same way. The americans who have had a stayathome order in place longer than anyone else in the country are californians, had the first, been under it longest and state has benefitted from stayathome order, fact was put in place so early, california having flatter curve and less of a peak in their epidemic than other states have. But new pole of california residents finds vast majority want the stayathome order to remain in place as long as needed to fight this epidemic. Support for sheltering in place strong amongst all demographic group. 75 of them support shelter in place. 75 of the public. And its every strata of that population, and its not just california. Abc news just released results of their nationwide poll asking the same question across the country. Overwhelming majorities of americans favor restrictions related to containing the coronavirus and fear moving too quickly to reopen the economy. Are concerns that break through party lines. Proportion of those who believe moving too quickly is greater threat than moving too slowly is 72 . Proportion of americans who believe social distancing and stayathome orders are responsible policies, that proportion is 86 . And honestly its not like this is a controversial thing or even partisan. Even among republicans, 82 of Republican Voters nationwide say that social distancing and stayathome orders are responsible, lifesaving actions. Because americans get it. Americans understand this, broadly speaking. And americans, broadly speak, want to do the right thing. And not incidentally, they are by and large. Something even more than grateful toward the doctors and nurses and other Health Care Workers who these stayathome orders are designed to protect so we dont have too many infections at once and overwhelm the hospitals, so they can do their work. Last couple of friday nights weve checked in with dr. Ernest patti, er doc in the bronx, hardhit facility. Its friday night again and tonight he sent us some pictures of a bunch of origami hearts that kids in texas sent to him in er at st. Barnabas, very happy to have them. All holding them. Love this picture. Look at this, this is fascinating. One of the things we have noticed with dr. Patti when hes sent us checkin videos from er at st. Barnabas, hes worried his patients cant connect with him, see his face because of the mask and shield he wears. Weve noticed where his lapel would be if he was wearing a suit, its backwards because thats the way its shot. He drew his name and smiley face on the name tag. Even if patients cant see his face, they can see that, human touch we noticed about dr. Patti in these videos. Dr. Patti says someone else in the world was struck by that. And they decided to come up with a solution to the problem hes trying to fix here. They printed a picture of dr. Pattis actual smiling face on a sticker the size of a baseball card. He can peel the back off that and stick it on the outside of his ppe suit. Patients who cant see his face can at least see a smiling picture of what his face looks like. Its pasted on the front of his gear now. People are just sending this stuff to doctors working on the front lines because theres so much support for them among the American People and americans by huge bipartisan majorities support these stayathome orders which we know work to slow the spread of the disease, one most important thing we can all do collectively to save our Health Systems, doctors and nurses, not to mention ourselves apds our families. Youre among good company, the feelings you have for Health Care Workers right now and vast majority of americans supporting the stayathome orders as responsible thing to do. Nevertheless some republican governors are demanding their states get opened up right now. Well get a live report from georgia, chief of emergency medicine in first hospital that hit capacity and overflowed because of the huge numbers they were seeing in that part of the state already. Georgia has a real epidemic on its hands. More than 22,000 known cases of the virus and numbers are going up, not down. Helpful Data Visualization from New York Times, new coronavirus cases per capita six weeks ago. Map is divided county by county. This is four weeks ago. And then is georgias new cases two weeks ago. And this is georgias new cases two days ago. This is not the portrait of a state that has licked this thing and is ready to move on and get better now. But i should mention even those bad georgia case numbers are likely a wild undercount because georgia is among the worst states in the nation in terms of proportion of population tested for virus. Maximum about 1 of their population tested. Not to sledgehammer this point home or anything but look also at kinds of facilities in which we the American People have had the worst track record so far in terms of keeping americans safe, keeping them from being infected, from dying. Look as those in georgia, georgia is rich in those facilities. Got this map today from the Data Visualization folks at topos showing red dots indicating prisons or jails where there are known to be coronavirus outbreaks. Bigger the dot, bigger size of the outbreak but part of the problem in jails and prisons, a, not much testing, b, once in there, hard to keep rest of the people who live and work in that facility from getting infected as well. Even small outbreaks in jails and prisons tend to become big fast and prime vector to spread to the community as staff from the prison go home to families end of every shift. Its on this map, remarkable to see the spread. Even with terrible access to testing, just the spread of of of prisons and jail cases across the country. But look for a second at georgia. Look at how many of these red dot jail and prison outbreaks there are specifically in the state of georgia. Again georgia today is opening back up because that states republican governor has decided he just doesnt want to deal with this anymore so hes going to pretend its fine. As for other facilities weve had a hard time as country keeping people uninfected and alive, other top two nominations besides jails and prisons would be Nursing Homes and Meat Processing plants of all places, right . But makes sense and were seeing it all over the country. Places where workers work in large numbers in close contact in aggregate and theyve been kept going, kept running, kept open. Even with stayathome orders those plants are open. Those are the places weve had a hard time getting hands around the epidemic. In terms of Nursing Homes, georgia says 40 of its deaths from coronavirus in state of georgia are in nursing home tz. That means the epidemic is raging through georgia Nursing Homes. Responsible for deaths of hundreds of americans. Meat packing plants. Georgia is tied with arkansas and texas for largest number of Meat Processing facilities of any state. Georgia calls itself the poultry capital of the world. Already had multiple meat packing workers die as theyve kept the plants open and seems to be no strong urgency to get rest of the workers in these facilities tested. Just so you know, state of georgia has Nuclear Power plant where 118 workers have tested positive as well. No worries, im sure thats fine too. Nuclear power plant thing, probably no big deal maybe . Also tons of meat pack plants with known spread and deaths already. Out of control in Nursing Homes. Hospital system in one corner of the state overtopped. Cases rising every county in the state and some of the worst testing in america. Thats the state thats opening everything back up and where you can get tattoos again as of today. Go georgia. If we are going to pay so much attention to the fringe protrump open it all back up protests, we should also note protests like this one today against Georgia Governor Brian Kemp opening it up. Your life is what is essential, keep your family safe at home. Keep your family healthy, stay home. Its not time to reopen. Believe in science, not kemp, life over money, science matters. But you know what, despite the fact that americans by and large do get it and do understand what its going to take to fight this pandemic and try to save american lives, turns out that ignorance among our nations leaders is not a lonely condition. This will today go down in history as the day that everybody from the Lysol Company to the u. S. Surgeon general had to try to figure out responsible way to deal with the fact that the president of the United States suggested in all seriousness from the White House Briefing room that maybe people should try to ingest disinfectants of some kind or some kind of light you could get inside the body because that could work right . This will also go down in the books as the day the Vice President said the coronavirus will be well and truly behind us by memorial day. All over by then. And remembered in medical journals as fda had to put out actual warning about drug that president and Fox News Channel are repeatedly inexplicably touted as miracle cure for weeks on end. Ignorance is not a lonely status at the top right now. But do you remember at the beginning of this month, more than three weeks ago now, the general shock and astonishment when Georgia Governor Brian Kemp got up in april, april 2020, year of our lord, and he said into a microphone in public he had just learned, just learned that day, that people who dont have symptoms can still be infectious with this disease. Hold the phone, he had no idea before then. Individuals can be infected and begin to spread coronavirus earlier than previously thought. Even if they have no symptoms. From a Public Health standpoint, this is a revelation and a game changer. A revelation, a game changer. Right . Cue the National Laugh track as georgias governor announces he has just learned something that everybody else has known for months, that has been driving the Public Health response in the richest nation on earth to the deadliest pandemic in a c t century, surprise, news to him. But Georgia Governor Brian Kemp was actually ahead of the curve on that. Wasnt until 17 days after that that the trump administrations secretary of defense announced that he too had just learned that same fact himself. He had just learned it that very day. What weve found of the 600 or so that have been infected, whats disconcerting is a majority of those, 350plus, have asymptomatic, its revealed a new dynamic of this virus that it can be carried by normal, Healthy People with no idea theyre carrying it, were learning a lesson there and making sure were conveying it to force. Learning a lesson, new dynamic, people are a symptomatic and they have this thing. Finishes by listen, were letting everybody in the navy know this. Weve newly discovered a fact that was less than a week ago that the defense secretary said that. Hes just figuring it out. Which is disconcerting given that that is the person President Trump has put in charge of running the Largest Military on earth. Its also disconcerting when the whole reason it came up with secretary esper is there really has been outbreak of more than 850 coronavirus cases of navy sailors on aircraft carrier. And uss kidd emerged as another outbreak at sea, 18 u. S. Sailors positive thus far. Commanding officer of the aircraft carrier, brett crozier, was fired by trumps Navy Secretary after he raised alarm about the burgeoning outbreak and need to test and treat his sailors. Navy secretary himself has resigned in disgrace for having taken that action. New york times reported that navy review of captain croziers performance recommended reinstating him as captain of the uss theodore roosevelt, secretary mark esper was expected to announce it after he received that report. Decided not to. Washington post the first to report that decision on croziers fate has been delayed, deferred for some reason. Presumably they need to figure out some new revelation to blame their actions on or find a way to make this something the president likes, who knows. Meanwhile nations veterans continue to suffer almost unimaginable death tolls from the virus. Death toll in holyoke soldiers home is up to 73 veterans dead at one facility. On long island in new york, in stony brook home, death toll is now 46 dead. 46 dead of 350 veterans in that facility. Management there actually sent out urgent plea to the public this past week for help getting ppe to their staff, asking anybody in the community to please help them. 46 dead already. In louisiana at Veterans Home in reserve, louisiana, 150 veterans at home start of the epidemic, had 43 deaths over past two months. Today the times pic aune reports ten left in the home and five hospitalized. Remaining vets still there, half of them are positive. Almost feels like a miracle theyre not all positive. But you know, the hardest places to fight this thing are the places that you have to fight the hardest. And coming up next tonight weve got a constructive, practical, instructive story about how to do that and how to do it really well. Thats next. Give me your hand i can save you.
