The way it works is an onscene commander xhis eer initially fr Patrol Division of the local police will arrive and coordinate an active shooter team, which is made up of two or three of the first responding officers who go right into to try to engage the shooter. It looks like from the reports that the shooters deceased, at least thats whats been reported today a few minutes ago. I dont know if thats been confirmed by nbc news. But they want to engage the shooter. They want to take down the shooter. And then everythings going to slow way down. If youre barricaded in a classroom or an he was, slow down is good because it means that maybe the threat has been neutralized, eliminated, put down, arrested or killed. And they will then slowly move through to get each and every classroom and office safe. Jim, stay with us. Lets listen in to the coverage from our local seattle affiliate king 5. Presumably it came directly from marysvillepilchuck high school. We cant say with any certainty that anybody was on board that aircraft. And certainly i think i will saw information 20 minutes ago, 25 minutes ago northwest said it had not transported anybody. Within the past ten minutes it plopped down on the roof of the hospital coming from the shooting scene. Our sumgts is somebodys on board. We did talk with a Public Information officer from providence, who told us things were pretty frantic right now. She didnt have any information she could confirm. We cant say with absolute certainty that any victims are here at this everett hospital. Im standing across from the emergency room right now. I see a marysville fire aid car. I see several Everett Police officers here, aid cars from other areas, as well as some rural Metro Private ambulance units and some of these certainly look like and certainly the way that people are running around here, crews running around here, it looks like this is the spot where some of these victims may have been transported to. Were awaiting official confirmation of that, but theyve got a helicopter here and aid cars here, so it sure looks like this is the place that some of these victims are coming. Chris, thank you. We just want to let viewers know Marysville Police department now giving an update on whats happening at the high school. According to a reporter watching that press conference, he says Marysville Police reports that the shooter is dead. That the shooter was a student and they are continuing to clear buildings. Just as soon as we can get the live signal up of the press conference, well bring that to you right here. We to want go to eric wilkinson, nearby that Church Gathering place. Eric, where are you . Were being told this is the secondary location for parents to pick up their kids. There are a couple dozen parents here nervously awaiting those buses carrying the kids, to reunite them with their children. We are joined with jose garcia. His sister was inside that school. She was texting him as the shooting was going on. Jose, can you tell us what she said happened . Yes. She text me, saying jo jo my nickname were going to interrupt you for a second and go to Marysville PoliceDepartment Holding that press conference. We have a Police Officer located on campus. Reporter was that person there at the time . I dont not know that. Is it typical for your assignment to be there . The resource officer located on campus. Reporter was that person there at the time . I do not know that. Reporter was it typical for their assignment to be there. Yes, yes. Definitely. Reporter can you explain again how police first learned about this here in marysville . We received a 911 call from somebody that was on campus, that was reporting the shots. Reporter a student . A teacher . I dont know that. Reporter what are parents being asked not to come directly to the school. What wouldou like parents and others to know at this time . We do ask parents to please stay away. Its an active situation. We need to make sure that its safe and secure. As soon as we learn where that unification spot is going to be i know that students are being bussed away. As soon as i learn where that reunification spot will be, ill let you know so we can get that out to the parents. Please, dont go to the campus. That really, really makes things difficult for our officers. Are you certain there was only one shooter involved . At this point we feel confident, but we have not cleared the entire building yet, so we are there is a possibility, but we dont believe so. Reporter why were students coming out with their hands up . At this point i dont have any information about whats going on at the well, mostly for security. We want to make sure they dont have any weapons on them when theyre coming out toward our officers. It is a safety situation. Reporter can you explain what the standard protocol is when you get a call like this and you respond to a school, what is the sort of one, two, three, fours well, the incident really dictates that. Its not really a black and white lynnial thing. Definitely when we get those kind of calls, all officers will respond to the active situation immediately. And so thats where we thats where we start. From there, whatever is taking place, will dictate what we do from there. Reporter we heard you had recently conducted a some sort of drill or s. W. A. T. Drill at pilchuck high school. Is that true . Its possible. I do not know if the s. W. A. T. Team has done that. Reporter did you have plans ahead of time so you know what the buildings are and so forth . Yes. Reporter can you describe that . We do have all of the School Building plans. They are up at the command post at this time. Im certain they are utilizing those and relaying that information on scene. Reporter for anybody just joining the live stream or king 5, can you explain what you know so far and whats going on at the campus right now . At this very moment, we have officers on scene that are clearing all of the buildings on campus to make sure that there is no longer an active threat. Reporter and the students, are there any students still holed up in the school or on campus, as far as you know . I dont know the status of all of the students. I know were in the process of evacuating them. Reporter after some other School Shootings it can sometimes take hours for parents to find out where their kids are, where to find their kids, the reunification process. For parents watching this now, what can you tell them about what they should do . How can they find out if their kids are okay . Well, right now were still in the were still in the process of getting all that information. So, were very early in the stages. We are trying to locate a reunification spot. We will get that information out as soon as we can and its really a holding pattern. Its unfortunate, but were trying to get that information out. Reporter should we just stay here and wait for the latest word from you . I think for right now, this would be a good location. We may change that later on. But at this point, this is a good spot. Reporter what is the latest [ inaudible ] six possibly injured . Right now we are confirming one person that is deceased and that that person is believed to be the shooter. Reporter have officers made contact with the deceased body or are they just getting this information . I dont know that. I have no information about what is actually taking place on scene. Ryouve been listening to a Police Conference in marysville, washington about a shooting at a high school. The shooter is dead. Lets lets bring in Jim Cavanaugh and Clint Van Zandt, former fbi profiler. Clint, once again were here to talk about a School Shooting. Whats going through your mind right now . Well, part of it is one statistic that im aware of says since the illfated shooting at sandy hook that broke americas heart in december 2012, its been less than two years and theres been almost 90 incidents on School Campuses across United States involving shootings. I heard a previous guest use the term, epidemic. I thought, gee, thats a little harsh. But, you know when you look at those statistics, its really not. And unfortunately we get a lot of copycats in School Shootings. And weve got weave a society sometimes that looks at violence, looks at firearms as a legitimate means of conflict resolution. And until we can change that mind set, a recent fbi statistic said that Mass Shootings are growing in number and it appears theres nothing thats going to deter that figure from getting any greater at this time. Jim, i was wondering if you would pick up on that point. Is it also based on your research it is true were seeing a rise on Mass Shootings and shootings at school in particular because it seems from the Public Perception thats the case . If that is the case, do you have any sense of why we may be seeing that increase . Krystal, were you asking me that question . Jim, yes, please. Yes. I think its a reflection of society as a whole that not like clint said, i agree with everything clint said. And you know, we have adults who cant cope with losing their job. They lose their job and then they go to their workplace and they want to kill the boss and all the people there. This is, you know, a society thats changed during our lifetimes. I think we need in our educational processes for all people to realize that life is a series of setbacks where you have to get up and get back in the game. Certainly, Mental Illness plays a role, theres suicide, a lot of factors. Im not trying to make it a simplified answer. But many people who strike out on revenge or because they were kicked off the debate class or the football whatever team they were on and they want to come back and kill that teacher or kill their boss at work. So i think as a society weve really got to look at teaching and training young people, you know, that you have to be able to deal with setbacks in life. You may fail a class. You may get fired. It doesnt mean you have to kill everyone. It doesnt mean the end of the world. The most successful people have all been knocked down many times. Set back many times. I call it the scars of leadership. Theres no leader that doesnt have a lot of them. The best leaders probably have the most of them. So, you have to get in there, get back up and get in the game. And i dont know how we do that. Maybe psychologists, educators can help us as a society. But thats got thats got to be a change we really need. Jim, i think thats absolutely right. Before we go on, lets listen to a little bit. A mother of one. Students talking. Lets listen to that. What has he told you so far . He says the school has been on lockdown and hes been hiding in a closet in a classroom with some classmates. Some students are being let out in small numbers to sit on buses to be transported nearby. Was the first word you got about what was happening from your son, who was texting you . Yes, yes. Thats how i heard. And what was your reaction as a mom getting that text . I was terrified and, you know, some panic started to set in. But i told my other half that we what was going on and we decided to come here just to make sure everything is okay with him. But as far as we know, hes okay and hes safe with his other classmates in the classroom now. Has he described whats going on inside the classroom . It sounds like hes safe with the other classmates. At that point when he was texting me he seemed to be very calm, which is unusual for what is going on. You would think that panic would set in, but hes got a good head on his shoulders and keeping himself safe. So whats your plan knowing some of these kids are able to leave. Your son is still in the classroom. What are you going to do . Were just waiting here where the police have told us to wait at the church nearby. Were just waiting for him to come out safely. Well, you seem very calm, which is good. Were trying to get more information for parents out there. If youre at the church, thats a good place to be. Were told that is where the students will be brought is it a couple blocks away from the school . Yes. Its about its a couple blocks away from the school. A lot of parents are already parked here, waiting for their student, their kid. It seems like everybodys calm at the moment. Theres a lot of Police Presence here. Can i ask you, has your son ever gone through drills, practicing for an event like this, lockdown drills or things like that . You know, there have been. A few years ago there was a robbery down the street and the school was on lockdown. I think for the most part they were prepared. Youve been listening to a parent speak to a local affiliate, a parent of the student at maerskville high school. Well bring in Anthony Roman, security expert who specializes in risk management. Good day to you. Lets get your reaction from what we learned about a relatively brief local police press conference. The police saying its still an active situation, telling parents and Community Members to stay away from this site of this high school in marysville where this shooting occurred. Police telling us they are confident, their words confident, they believe at this time it was one shooter. One shooter now confirmed deceased on the campus as they continue to go room by room to evacuate what is still a lockdown situation. How does that protocol sound to you and what is your reaction to the polices assessment at this point . Well, i think the police have had an incredible response given their resources. Its a reasonably small Police Department in the area. However, they had the foresight to have their officers crosstrained as special weapons and tactics members. So, each Police Officer is actually wonderfully prepared for just this type of scenario. It seems the school was prepared with the proper protocols, the lockdown. The search was done properly and is continuing. So i think everyone has done a marvelous job. With regard to everett hospital, it is a level 2 trauma center. So, beautifully equipped to handle shooting victims. Given theres a lot we dont know at this point. We dont know anything about the motives of the shooter. We dont know what kind of coordination or planning went into this shooting. We do know, according to police, it is one student shooter. Talk to us about how the police then assess whatever potential danger there might be here in what they describe as an active situation, given they seem to be operating on the theory that it was one student shooter. They do not seem to be concerned there was a larger threat ongoing. Well, thats a preliminary assessment on their part. And they have to consider that, perhaps, there may be other shooters. They may believe that. But they have to act as if its not so. Therefore, the entire complex needs to be sevenarched. The entire campus needs to be searched. They have a lot of work on their hands. This is an enormous multiacre campus with multiple buildings, administration buildings, classroom buildings, gymnasium, football field. Were talking about a very, very big search pattern. The investigation, likewise, will be complex. They have to search the student. Actually search the body for any evidence that he may have, any notes, any statements or declarations. Search his premises, determine where he secured the weapon from. Search his computer, his hard drive, his mobile phone and other devices. And put a profile together. We were just talking about this the other day on your show. The concern we have about the level of security that schools have. We were talking specifically about School Shootings and mall shootings. And its my belief that this needs to be revisited. Although the protocols were beautifully carried out, we now have to move toward prevention. Anthony, what do you mean by that more specifically, if were rethinking safety at places like schools, at other public buildings, government buildings, for example, and at malls, what does that actually look like on a daytoday basis . Well, it depends on the complex that were dealing with. But you take a situation like malls or, perhaps, schools, they have unarmed security guards present. The level of training that the security guards get varies from facility to facility. I think that needs to be standardized. Improved and a determination made as to the Access Points to the school and the points of egress, the level of security cameras, and to create a more rapid scenario for response. So we minimize the loss of life. Anthony, those are excellent, specific things we can do to manage risk in very specific enclosed areas. What would you like to see us do as a society to be better at preventing School Shootings and these sort of things . Well, this is a multilayered problem. Its a sociological and psychological problem. And i think jim did a beautiful job, your earlier guest, of discussing that. Real we need to have more money spent, more resources spent in schools on Mental Health. They are the first line. The teachers see the students who are troubled. Its no secret to administration, whos a trouble student and who isnt. Who are the loners. Whos isolated from normal social interaction. And rather than be reactive to those situations, we need more resources, psychologists, social workers and trained professionals to be proactive with regard to that.
