Also a federal judge rebuking attorney general barr for convictions from multiple trump aids. Were going to get into that as well. Right now we begin with the big story. The democratic nomination for who will take on President Trump hangs in the balance. Today is the first full day this has been a twoperson race and the last friday before another primary day that could fortify joe bidens lead as he tries to consolidate the party. Biden leading with over 600 and 20 delegates to sanders 553, which means theyre just about 70 delegates apart. Mow, wh now, when that is the margin, call it a mini tuesday that awards 352 delegates is a big deal. Whats coming on tuesday, what everyone has their eye on tonight could hammer home joe bidens lead or disrupt things again and make them closer. Voters in six different states will weigh in tuesday. Now, sanders had won four in 2016 but there are clue bidens momentum is continuing. Take michigan. Sanders win with clinton was a defining moment and she went on to lose that state in the general election. Bernie sanders argument is he can do better against trump in a state like michigan. Well, that may be running into turbulence. Some state polls showed him trailing biden and sanders has so far failed to match the 2016 strength across the, quote, White Working Class of this state this year, which might have impacted shortcomings on super tuesday. There was a time everyone agreed Bernie Sanders was the frontrunner and the attacks were coming at him. That was in the last two weeks. Right now things are changing and hes going after bidens record. Joes been around for a long time. So have i. And i think people are going to take a look at those records. Take a look at the records. Sanders is arguing the narrow race now is the time for democrats to dig into policy substance and not rush to annoy the latest candidate with momentum. Let me tell you exactly what the strategy is. One, sanders knows partlgts of this Democratic Party are coalescing around biden for the history of him being a uniting leader. Anything nasty by sanders may only reinforce calls to get sanders pushed out. Second, in all fairness, Bernie Sanders knows what really Many Democrats know, there was a reason so many people in the party spent so many months searching for alternatives to the most famous candidate in the race, joe biden. Looking to mayor pete, klobuchar, warren. Bloomberg for a hot minute. And sanders is trying to remind voters that its his record, his policy, leadership, part of why there was all of that time looking but not everyone in this party is in line with joe biden. Joe biden and i have very strong different positions in terms of how we reacted to nafta. I vigorously opposed agreements, joe biden supported the agreements. I have consistently led the effort to protected social security. Biden has been on the floor of the senate in years past calling for cuts to social security. I have a lifetime of voting records in support of a womans rights to control her own body. On this issue joe biden repeatedly voted for the today, thank god, it is relatively easy to be a champion of gay rights. But that was not the case 25 years ago. Joe biden was not one of them. Sanders also holding a rally tonight in detroit, trying to drive those points home. Meanwhile, biden tapping some of the former rivals, tapping klobuchar to make part of her midwestern appeal. Ee even if thats one out of ten voters, that can make all the difference. Warren, not immediately endorsing, like some rivals. But in her interview last night she was often even handed and fair about the candidates. But at times went out of her way to tout joe bidens character, which is notable considering they dont agree on her signature economic policies. He is exactly, at least this is my view. He is exactly who he says he is. Hes a decent guy and i mean that in a good of decency. My whole life has been about working families. And more about how government should be there to be on their side. I believe the Vice President has the same goal. We may have come at this from Different Directions and may continue to come at it from Different Directions but i dont have any doubt about the sincerity. Lets get right to it. Michael steele is here and erick garcetti, who is supporting joe biden. Thanks to both of you. Because we have a strong surrogate, were going to get to you in los angeles. But before i turn it over, michael, as a big picture person looking at the primary without a dog in the fight, what do you think of this line sanders is walking . Theres time to fight and i promise it will be on substance. Theres always time to fight but the substance part i think is where hes missing the point. My observations are and you and i have chatted about this before. Looking at this campaign the past year, the base democratic voter of the folks coalescing around biden have always been about one thing. Who can defeat trump. Even when they were, as you noted earlier, straining eyes and that was the central thing. Who can beat trump and this idea of policy and ideology and philosophy, theyre not up for that. They dont want that fight. The vast majority of voters dont want that fight. What they want is to get me all crazy. Who can get me all crazy and move the country back into a workable space so we can then have those fights and thats what this is about. Are you saying that joe and bernie are both theyre going to class on campus and bernie thinks the philosophy class and joe thinks its Political Science and you think hes going to have the higher enrollment . I absolutely do. I think joe has tapped into that, which is whats made it easier for people to tap into that. You heard Elizabeth Warren talking about what will be an idea for voters, his character. Because they see the character of the guy hes running against. That wasnt about the nuances of Public Health care and policy. It was about how this mans character is one of many irons in the fire to help defeat donald trump. I get the policy angle and i know Bernie Sanders wants to go back and talk about the records and stuff. But voters are past records. They dont care about records right now. They want to know can you move me off this spot right now . Because this is not a happy spot right now. It makes sense. Straightup politics. Great to be in your city, sir. Great to have you. We try to talk to everyone and let viewers and voters makeup their own minds. I know, its oldfashioned. Youre here for biden. Weve had Michael Moore on. And take a listen to the pitch against your candidate. Take a listen. Theyre not thinking tonight about who can stop donald trump. Theyre thinking about who can stop Bernie Sanders and its sad to see that. Its sad to think theyre voting for biden because theyre afraid. If youre afraid of trump now f thats what really is behind this, if you vote for a candidate and we take fear into the general election, we will lose to trump if we vote on fear. The political allegation there is that people in the part party dont actually love joe biden, he alleges, thats why theyre looking for Something Else and rushing to fear . I dont think he scares people. He makes people feel great. This is about his inherit goodness. He helped us raise the minimum wage, make Community College free, was out there on climate agreement businessfore paris. And he is all about hope. He is all about goodness and character is on the ballot its going to be the most important thing ppt at the end we vote on who they are and how they make us feel. Joe is loved. Nobody has a heart like him and people back him for that reason. Does it trouble you Bernie Sanders has spent so much time outside the party and some feel against the party . We need his voters and joes voters to come together in the fall. There are progressesival policies that both embody are going to be critical. But senator warren is right. This is a man who people know and who is good. At the end of the day thats what america is looking for as well as somebody who can relate to the firefighters and people who felt the sting of the economic system. I think joe embodies that as much as anybody. Makes sense. Appreciate your perspective. This is where it all goes. Its about delegates and which states are going to weigh in first. Arizona, florida, illinois. Ohio. These were mostly clinton. And we can see that. As you go to march 17th. Does it matter that the numbers are uniform but the reactions are not . By which i mean and you know this was the case in other primaries as well. If joe biden were down 100 delegates, there would be a lot of people saying play it out. Lets see what happens. If sanders dropped around 150 delega delegates, i dont think the partys going to give him the same reception . Theres not. Because socialism, okay, democratic socialism, how do we deal with that . Some would like the see the senate be in play. So, those are varinables there. But the numbers are the numbers. Both have to ask themselves where do we win next . When you look at the map you showed, the question for Bernie Sanders is where do you win . Florida . Michigan . Arizona . And thats the challenge and thats the problem as this consolidation has begun. The south is off the board. Youre not winning alabama, mississippi. Thats off the board. So, where do you go from there . The black vote is consolidated and the africanamerican vote around the country is consolidating and thats a significant part of your base vote. So, it become as real numbers game for sure and it favors joe biden right now. Really striking hearing that from you and thats why we always watch follow the numbers. Because nothing else is going to give you an understanding of the race. I want to bring in jumeal smith, a Senior Writer for rolling stone. And a professor for school of communications and let me play last night on Rachel Maddow we heard Elizabeth Warren and discussed specifically the calls about gender diversity in the white house. Take a listen. I think theres a feeling your campaign ending is very specific to you and feels a bit like a death melt in terms of having a woman president in our lifetimes. Oh, god, please no. That cant be right. Its just going to be a little longer before were able to have a woman in the white house. But it doesnt mean its not going to happen. It doesnt mean its not going to happen soon. Well know we can have a woman in the white house when we finally elelct a woman to the white house. Lets start there. There are a lot of people grieving right now seeing warren be the last strong contender for the race. You have that delegate graphic that showed gabbert has two delegates. Not a serious contender, not in the next debate. So, thats a moment and always hard to understand why she wasnt doing better and how that wasnt about her gender just from now, a deserver of politics far more than a participant since im Teaching College students about this and this is one thch questions they ask all the time. Why wasnt she included in certain polls . Why arent her speeches carried live . You go to bloomberg, who didnt actually have anymore chance than she did. And youve been writing about this . What do you think its important to understand warren and playing it forward . She has a role to play, if she wants, in this twoperson contest. I think if we think about how her plans, her very voluminous plans are used Going Forward, both by biden and sanders. I think there are a lot of holes to fill in both campaigns. I think sanders could improve his rhetoric on gun violence by looking at how shes spoken about it. I think both men could improve how they speak about a marginalized communities by looking at how shes done it. Shes advocated getting rid of the fill buster. Neel neath of them do. Thats essential. There are a lot of things Elizabeth Warren has suggested and done and i think whats more important if we hope to have a woman be in the white house, men who get elelcted to that white house, have to essentially prepare the country to accent female leadership. Its on us to make sure that the country gets ready for that. I totally agree with that. I also will say it miffs me a bit when there were a lot of people who dropped out and havent endorsed. Kamala harris not under the same pressure. Cory booker. Just because she reecently dropped out doesnt mean she has to make a decision and i think shes been clear she believes biden does not represent the fundamental change and now were talking politics, so i appreciate the cross cutting point about pressures. But were hearing that a lot more people around both of the remaining candidates are thinking about if and what warren would stand for than say cory booker, no shame. And many have cast votes for her. So, thats more tangible than somebody who dropped out before. She will play a big role Going Forward whether shes a strong democrat in the senate, or theyre in the majority or minority or whether she is in somebodys administration. And we know whatever it is, shes going to say what she thinks and fight. Looming over this is who can fight trump. Take a listen briefly to sanders and trump on how do you take care of people . How do you deal with Public Benefits and socalled entitlements to the elderly. Take a listen. Donald trump, in his budget, called for massive cuts in medicaid, medicare and cuts to social security. If you dont cut something in entitlement, youll never and well also have growth like youve never had before. Baseline i dont think you can believe anything donald trump says. But if youre talking about cutting medicare, social security, i mean, thats something fundamentally has never worked and been popular in america. Of course, you have his staff, Kelly Ann Conway walking that back saying he didnt say it and you could hear it. He did say it. I think its good politics for both sanders and biden to start attacking trump and less attacking each other. I think we need to see how theyre going to go after trump because youre talking about trump being the priority. And at the goes to the root of the remaining democratic voters. At the start is different from too left and how are you doing this in a way consistent with voters ambition. I want to thank both jamil and christina. And. A federal judge rebuking attorney general bill barr for distorting the facts and misleading the public in how he handled the Mueller Report. The doj responding moments ago saying the courts assertions were contrary to the facts and they stand by the work they have done. Remember when mueller finished the russia probe t w, it figuret criminals in the highest level of trumps orbed. Thats why Donald TrumpsCampaign Manager and one of his longest serving lawyers are in prison right now and yet the leader of the Justice Department which won those victories infamously rushed out misleading information at the end of the probe, before the Mueller Report came out. A major victory for President Trump. The summary now from the attorney general who said mueller and his team found no collusion, no conspiracy. The conclusion of the Mueller Report has been released. Reporter they found no evidence President Trump or his campaign conspired or coordinated with russia. That was some of the initial reporting about barrs letter, not the actual Mueller Report. It was, in a way, exactly what barr wanted. But not everyone took his word for it that day. In fact, we were rushing to the newsroom that day to report specifically on the fact and difference between what barr was asserting in his letter and what one could find if and when we got the underlying Mueller Report. Theres so many legit mimate questions, including whether or not barrs account amounts to something a bits of a white wash. Theres not a single full sentence in here thats quoted the Mueller Report. The house is getting muscled out to say im going to issue my own conclusion on that. And hes doing that with the four partial sentences. No one outside the Justice Department or the special counsels team has seen muellers report. So, were relying on the barr summary for all our information. That was our journalistic reporting about the facts. And
