Expanding, costly autoworkers strike, and oh, the return of student loan payments, they are just around the corner. We are talking to Congresswoman Emilia about how, and if, congress can do anything about any of this. And, we are heading to florida, where former congresswoman debbie lieu is on the ballot. We are going to chat looking to challenge senator rick scott for his seat. We will ask her how she plans to break the republican stronghold. Plus, Social Media Sensation is in the simone spotlight. We are entering a critical week in this country, one that will impact americans in so many ways. Pocket in a perfect storm, just make it even worse. Let me walk you through the Triple Whammy that i am talking about. First, the looming government shutdown, congress has six days to fund the governor, just six days. Yall and the House Republican seem more determined than ever to jeopardize the paychecks of millions of federal workers, all while ushering in billions of dollars in economic losses. All, just to enlist more americans into their culture wars. House speaker kevin mccarthy, just arrived at the capitol last hour. He told nbc news that members are, quote, working through it, and that he is in contact with Senate Minority leader mitch mcconnell, and House Democratic minority leader hakeem jeffries. The gridlock is all thanks to the small, but very vocal minority of House Republicans, and apparently they are powerful. These are folks who he cannot convince to do their constitutionally mandated job, and from the government. Even members of their own party, are growing frustrated. Here is what republican Congressman Garrett Graves had to say, after a Conference Call a republican members. What they have lit their house on fire, they are whining about the house burning. They are going to want credit for putting the fire, out and then they are going to send a gofundme to pay for what happened. This is really disingenuous. What we need to be doing right now, and what we should have been doing months ago, is not rocking the appropriations bills, as we saw. Make no mistake folks, this is a republican driven crisis. A very slim number of republicans have expressed a willingness to work with democrats, to fund the government in, the short term. This will be done by passing what is called a continuing resolution. But with each day that goes on, the prospect of a shutdown becomes more likely. Second, the same day that funding runs out, nearly 44 million americans with federal Student Loans will be expect to resume payments, after a three year pause. According to a recent survey from credit karma, more than half a federal borrowers say there would have tchoose between making their loan payments, or payi necessities like rent and groceries. Third, in the Triple Whammy, we have the United Auto Workers strike, which expanded to 38 General Motors and stellantis facilities across 20 states. These 18,000 workers are demanding better wages and benefits, as well as health care for retirees, and they are sacrificing their own income to walk the picket line. Thats millions of dollars removed from the economy from striking workers alone. Right now yall, the strike is targeted to very specific factories, but it could expand more in the days ahead. The anderson economic estimates thull fledged strike against the big three auto workers would result in more than Five Billion Dollars of economic losses, in just ten days. It is a very easy to see these as three separate issues. But from the halls of congress, to college campuses, to Factory Assembly lines, they are all connected. None of this is happening in a vacuum, and look, if you dont feel it now, you could soon. Joining me now to discuss all of this and more is democratic Congresswoman Emilia sykes of ohio. Welcome, congresswoman. Congresswoman, you are a member of the Problem Solvers Caucus. And the Problem Solvers Caucus you know, self evident name, self evident. You all tried to solve issues, and work across the aisle in a big part bipartisan fashion. I would argue, this is what all of congress should be doing, but its neither here nor there. Is there any indication that there are enough of your colleagues in this caucus, to work with democrats, and fund the government. Absolutely, and thank you for having me, on this is such an important issue. And i do hope more people get involved with, how can we prevent our government from shutting down. The Problem Solvers Caucus, we met earlier this week, and we are dedicating to work with anyone, from either side of the aisle, to make sure that our constituents are not impacted by a small group of extremists, who are willing to shut down the government. And, we are putting forth, and have put forth, a framework that will keep the government running, that will ensure that we follow through with the Debt Ceiling Conversations that we agreed to earlier in the year. Allow for there to be border security, something that i hear a lot of people being concerned about, including Speaker Mccarthy. And, really make sure that we are fulfilling the promise of the American People, which is doing our job. So, the republicans within the Problem Solvers Caucus, how they got to Speaker Mccarthy, and asked him to work with democrats . Because, the democrats that i have talked to, i had on the show yesterday, he noted that look, Republican Leadership has not come to democratic leadership yet, to say that we want to make a deal. So, from my understanding, they are very much engaged, the republicans and the problem solvers, with encouraging their leadership to work with the democrats. Or, just within their own conference, in order to get the votes that are needed. But it remains the same, the commitment from the democratic caucus. As a member of the democratic caucus, led by hakeem jeffries, we are still working, continuing to work. They told us that they meet natives this week, and there are many of us who are still here this weekend, who were ready to get to the Drawing Board to start figure out how we are going to fund our government. Ultimately, it is our job to do this, people in our constituents in our communities across the country, are relying on us to do this. We just need to do it, for the American People. Speaker mccarthy has been, i would like to say, threatened with a motion to vacate by members of his own party caucus. Is there any indication that there is a real potential motion, that will be filed . Or is this all just talk right now . Well, we saw one in the bathroom, on the campus the other week. But, i dont know. This could be a bust. But, i personally do not care about what is going to happen within the Republican Caucus. Im concerned about the people in ohios 13th conduct greszler, and whether or not they are going to be able to get their Social Security payments. Im concerned about our military veterans, our Military Service members, who are going to have to continue working without pay. That is why introduce a bipartisan bill, to make sure that they could get paid, in the event of a government shutdown. Im concerned about our constituents, and the folks across the country, who are not going to be able to eat, again a reason why we introduced the feeding our families act, with one of my colleagues from northeast ohio, chantal brown. Because, people are going to suffer real consequences, if the Republican Caucus cant get a new i am confident my colleagues in the democratic caucus, that we will come together, and do what we need to do in order to work for our constituents. It is what our, it is our values, is where our leadership tells us to do, it is what we are here in congress to do. I just hope that we can get the republicans to do the same. I think your confidence is hopefully comforting for folks out there. Lets talk about the folks in your district. Akron ohio is in your district, the chair of the Greater Akron Chamber warned about the impact of the uaw strike on the area, given its roots in rubber, and also manufacturing. So i mean, how are your constituents reacting to the strike . Are you in touch with the uaw members, in your district . We are a proud union community. Northeast ohio got its start, the middle class was built because of union leadership. Whether it was in steel mills, and auto manufacturing facilities, or in rubber, because we were the rubber city capital of the world. And, folks are concerned. They want to make sure, primarily, that the workers at the big three plants are getting there just payments, the conditions that they have been working for and fighting for. Because they pay a lot of people very rich, meanwhile, their wages are stagnant, they are conditions are troublesome, and sometimes problematic. And they are just asking for fairness, and it is not too much to ask. I, was with you at the top of the show, about the trouble way army that is staring the American People in the face. What do you say to constituents, that are concerned. They hear you, that youve introduced legislation, but if the legislation has not become a law, they are still going to be faced with issues. So what do you say to folks who say look, i hear you, but we need i hear them, and i want to make it very clear that while we are working to do things, there are just some forces that are refusing to allow progress to be made. But that will never stop my commitment to my constituents, or the people of this country. What we are making ourselves available to our constituents, so if they have questions, they are more than willing, they can talk to us about, it into a telephone town hall just this, week so we can keep people from got about what im doing here to make their lives a bit better. But ultimately, who is in the position to make these decisions . That is who we all vote for, and reevery election cycle. And if you are not seeing, if you are not liking what you are seeing, lets remember this next november. I will note, every member of the House Of Representatives is up for reelection next november. Speaking of 2024 quickly, in the time i have left. Lots of news about polls today, nbc news is out with a new poll, there is this other poll that is out, there that is an outlier from abc news in washington post. Just, in general, what are you hearing in your district, when you are talking to folks about how they feel, one about this economy, but to, about President Biden . Because the polls are saying a lot, i want to know what the people are saying. Well, people concerned by how much everything costs, that is the number one concern i hear, whether its gas, groceries, housing, college tuition, people are stretching their dollars a very. Thin is that enough to support the Vice President and president for reelection . Well, im not sure about that, because i think they are seeing with this government shutdown, where people are. I think we are seeing people in our communities, recognize that the striking workers are on the right side, that corporate greed is keeping people from getting more money, so that they can even keep their wages in line with inflation. So we have a lot to navigate, and i know that people are smart enough to figure out, its not just one, thing its not just one lever being told. You started the conversation that these three issues happening at once, and we are feeling them all of the same time. But what people want to sees leadership, they want to see honesty and sincerity from their elected officials. And that is what we are going to show them. Many of us are dedicated to doing, so i am dedicated to doing so, and i promised my colleagues, my constituents that i am here to work, and im here to work for. Of course, folks, we are going to talk about it. The national nbc poll out today shows President Biden and former President Trump tied at 46 in a hypothetical rematch in 2024. Putting too much stalk in national polls. Even one as good as nbc news. At this point in the campaign, its early. President ial races are won state by state, folks. Primaries are one state by State Delegate by delegate. And we have a long way to go until the general election. With that in mind, lets get into the details. Voters have concerns with both 2024 frontrunners. President biden stopped this approval rating. It hit 56 in september. The highest of his presidency. 59 of voters are still worried about his age. Voters are worried about Donald Trumps. Aid to a lesser extent. Trumps former criminal indictments are certainly bothering them more with 52 they have Major Concerns about that. In spite of all of this, former President Trump extended his lead in the contest. Seven of his republican challengers appear to have qualified for the second republican debate. They will take the stage wednesday in hopes of reaching more voters and making a name for themselves. Donald, trump of, course will not be there. We are digging into that. The chaos on capitol hill with my Political Panel is mixing things up. I have two republicans who know their way around the hill and election campaigns. I want you all to tell me whats going on. Matthew bartlett, a republican strategist and former Trump State Department appointee at msnbc political analyst. A former House Speaker paul ryans former chief communication adviser. A former house guru on the hill. Okay, first of all, let me get your thoughts on the polls today. The nbc news poll thatt through. There is that abc News Washington post poll that has been deemed an outlier by the washington post. Abc news, we talked about, it was a regular poll before we were chatting. You said the Outlier Polls matter. It shows donald trump won by ten points. Thats shocking. Its different than what weve seen. The more data we, have the better. I think you have to look at both polls out. Its a very serious problem for joe biden. The best thing you can probably stay coming out, its a long time until the election. The fundamental issues that usually decide elections, the economy, how people are feeling, those are core issues that tend to every election, even one is donald trump. Those things tend to matter. Joe biden is pulling poorly. Its always going to be an, issue the age issue. If youre joe biden, youre going to be much more worried about the substantive issues that people care about. How do you feel . People are not feeling well. Matthew, what do you think . This is a fire alarm, and an alarm clock bell really off whether its here in d. C. Across the country. We looked at polls. The polls come out. There seems to be a trend. Its going to be a tight election. We all know this is not a national election. These are state by State Elections and contests. I know there is data that says donald trump is going to continue to have a hard time breaking through. Make no mistake, this is going to be a very very close election. It was in 2016 when donald trump won by less than 70,000 votes in swing states. It was in 2020 in the midst of covid when donald trump lost by less than 30,000 votes in swing states and we should be prepared to have a very divided and bitter close election. I think the general election is going to be close. It doesnt seem close at all is the primary. You spent some time listening to the candidates on the trail. You love all the candidates out there. After donald trump, you got Governor Desantis and then former ambassador nikki haley. The numbers are low. So, what is going on here . Is there anything that fits the baits on based on the first, one its hard to see how that happens. I will say that in the first debate, they largely gave donald trump a pass. It feels like we are trending toward the debates and the campaigns being a bit of a silly show. Everybody understands where this is headed. However, this is probably the last chance they have. They need to make It Imperative for donald trump to show up to the next debate. If donald trump gets through one more debate and doesnt pay any price for, it feels no need to show up to the next, one its over. I think its already over. They need it. This is the last chance. And i get gets riskier at this point. The risk and reward is a little different now when he is so far ahead. Is it worth trying to drive up your negatives like Chris Christie . Why is he in the race . I dont understand why the republican candidates, at least get get competitive. Simone, youre right. Ive been up in New Hampshire and from New Hampshire and ive seen different cycles. Sometimes you feel like people are running not for the president but from the president right now. It is surprising. You mentioned, we are talking donald trump has been in the psyche of the republican voter for eight years. I talked with one your colleagues, jonathan, allen earlier in the year. The Republican Party used to be the party who do you want to have a beer with . I want to have a beer w. Bush. Right, now its who will break a beer bottle over the opponents head. Right now, thats donald trump. Oh, goodness. That doesnt make me feel good. Something else that is concerning myself and lots of folks out there, your former workplace, congress. Brandon, okay, the shutdown is looming. Speaker mccarthy seems to not have control. He is projecting optimism as a speaker should. What is going on here . A small number of republicans seem to be holding Speaker Mccarthy hostage. Why does he not just stick it to that small number and say we are working with the democrats and show them who is in charge. They are threatening his job in a way that weve ever obviously, there have been tensions between the Freedom Caucus and speakers going back three speakers now. This is very different. They are outwardly saying that if you bring up the bill that you have to pass with democrats, we are going to take your job away. Its insane. You have to work with democrats. The senate is controlled by democrats. They are setting the standard, it tells me when you set a standard that there is no way a speaker can meet, its all about trying to take him out. I dont know it will be successful. There is such a small majority that only a handful of members can do that. So, mccarthy is trying to show the rest of him hes doing everything he possibly can to make them happy, ultimately. They cant beat that test. He will move on and they will fund the government. He needs to show that hes done everything he possibly can first. This morning, the headline of Speaker Mccarthys hometown paper reads Speaker Mccarthy is giving hard right republicans what they want. It never seems to be enough. Matthew, will it ever be enough . How in the heck did matt gaetz become a freaking ringleader here. Listen, its very hard to govern, we have a divided country and congress. It looks like we even have a divided party. The speaker seemed to be speaking hard. Ive seen him at Julie Tsirkin just a few moments ago talking about how hes trying to avoid a shutdown thats proving to be a very difficult thing right now. The clock is running. We will see what happens. Matt gaetz, its unclear if hes making any friends in congress or if this will help him down in florida if he ever tries to run for governor. I will note the Attorney General is quite popular, i think they know something about matt gaetz. Before we go, okay, former president kathy houses in, she was on Cbs This Morning today. I want to play these comments. She said that she still a republican but added her coming out and speaking out is about 2024. Take a listen. Id like to make it clear i would not back the former president of the United States. He is dangerous for the country. He is willing and has shown time and time again willingness to proliferate lies and to vulnerable American People so he can stay in power. To me, thats the most unamerican thing you can do. So, brandon. Cassidy hutchinson seems to have exhibited more courage and forthright fullness than many the majority of folks in the Republican Party apparatus in this country. Why is what she decided so hard for so many people to do . They rely on donald trump for their livelihood and their place in politics. Thats the story of a lot of people. I think what she said is really important and powerful. Theres a lot of people who said similar things and its worth noting. The most important thing for all of this is the january six, they could and should be a central issue in this election. With the legal challenges the former president is facing, we know that joe biden has taken a step back and has not wanted to engage in it. It is a risky proposition. That was one of the darkest days in american history. If you cant wrap that around his neck and make him have to answer for that, with the general election voters who decide elections, i think it will be a missed opportunity, her bringing that to the forefront is great. We need to have that conversation. I think the president needs to be willing to engage on it himself. You have the last word, matthew. Listen, i fully agree. I was a Trump Appointee on the state department. I resigned generally sixth. I thought it was a disgraceful day. Being out there in america, im not sure they recognize january 6th for what it was, more importantly, what the charges are against the former president. This is not saying i believe i won the election. This is not a First Amendment issue. This is not even a notion of inciting a riot. This is a notion of saying, no, these are my delegates, im going to install them to keep me in power. These are serious charges. Very serious matters. I do wish there was much more of an objective, whether its absent or the justice department, some sort of entity that makes it clear to the American Public exactly precisely what these charges are. Okay, michelle, thank you for being here. You have been striking for nearly five months. And i want folks to understand, youre a professor and a screenwriter. You had recently sold a project to cbs. So, can you just lay out what toll this has taken on both yourself and your colleagues . Yes, first of all, thank you for having me. I really appreciate being here today. First of all, rioters in this industry, we earn money when we are working. When we are not working, we are not earning money. I think a lot of people get confused, they look at the amounts, our minimums are published. You can go online and see rioters make this much. The fact, is a lot of rioters are not employed, theyre trying to get jobs on shows, trying to sell screenplays and such. The toll is great. I know people that have lost their apartments, they are considering selling their homes because they cant continue like this. That said, we all are very confident in our union in fighting for what we believe is rightfully ours. We are not asking for handouts, we are asking to be compensated for work we do. What have you heard from the wga about this best and final offer from the studios. Thats the funny thing, that information came through the media through deadline and pretty much unless the Negotiating Committee tells us its a good, deal its not a good deal to us until they tell us our fate is in our committee. Its in our union and the Negotiating Committee. Ill be honest, a lot of us laugh data that last night. Beside it a little bit. We know thats also the same group of people that you all reported just recently said, you know, they hope that we lost our homes and our apartments. So, we cant take what they say until we hear from the union. Let me be clear, its only final if we are told its final. So, rachel, can you just explain to folks why the Artificial Intelligence piece is so important to the riders out there. This is one of the reportedly sticking points. Look at it like this, when we are writing, we are creating stories that come from our real experience based on things that we have gone through, excitement, joyce. We cant replace us in the creative sense, its this sense of wanting to possibly use us to be able to do it. The truth, is a, its Artificial Intelligence. Its using everybody elses screenplays to tell a story instead of hiring rioters to tell the stories. I just want to say this as a black woman as a black writer. Its stuck in our faces. Weve been fighting so long to be heard. We are finally seeing progress, especially since george floyd, the cochair of the committee for eight years up until last year, we wrote a letter that went viral. We talked about having a voice and then to get a voice and then to have the voice taken away by a computer is very insulting to all of us and all the writers of color. The women in the lgbtq unity of rioters. We are fighting hard to be heard, right . And seen. And, seen. A computer comes in, we can tell the story. Its like, what . No, you cant. Last years midterms, florida was theonly state where the promisewasnt off the mark. Republican candidates won every single statewide election in the 2022 midterms. It even led some to ask whether florida can still be considered a swing state. I think it can wait a little investment. Okay, can you just first tell us, what do you think has changed among voters between last years republican blowout and the upcoming 2024 election . Good afternoon, simone, thank you for having me. Let me start off by saying, florida is not a red state. This is a Voter Suppressed and gerrymandered state. Thats why you saw that anomaly in 2020. Do let me tell you just a little bit about why i know that its going to be different in 2024. Look, im a latina, rick scott has never faced a militant dina running against him in this election. I know exactly how to communicate with my community. Hes never run in a president ial year. We know that voters turnout in president ial elections. One thing that i think is important for the viewers to know is that we are going to have Abortion Rights on the ballot. Were going to have a Ballot Initiative that will protect a womans right to choose. And thats something thats really motivating women and men across all political affiliations. If you remember, Governor Desantis signed the most extreme abortion ban, a sixweek abortion ban, most floridians over 75 of them are against this ban. Rick scott proudly came out to support the most extreme ban on abortion. I feel very confident that this is a new year. Congresswoman, im very interested about your answer on abortion. Some of the National Pundits and politicos would say this is not a motivating issue in florida. You say that is the opposite of what youre seeing. You believe its of it will help poster you at the ballot box. Absolutely, everyone ive been talking to all over the state, whether im in Southern Florida are here in miami orlando, or northern florida, this is an issue thats motivating a mothers like myself. I have two daughters, symone. I refuse to allow them to grow up with fewer rights than i had coming from the home country of ecuador. My mother brought me here to give us opportunities that we wouldnt have in south america. Because of those opportunities, i was the first South American to ever be elected to serve in congress. Those opportunities are disappearing, especially for women here in our state. This is a civil rights issue. This is about freedom. This is about protecting a womans privacy to make her own Reproductive Health care choices between herself, her family, and her faith. I assure you, most learned eons have rejected this initiative. I have friends who are republican who are absolutely vote to protect womens right to choose. I want to get you to weigh in on your States Education policy. It has been the subject of national news. Theres a study from the American Association of university professors, it found that nearly half of florida professors say they plan to seek employment in another state before this years out. 85 said they would not recommend a colleague began teaching in florida. How would you use a senate seat to prepare the damage, these numbers are staggering. Simone, before i went to congress, i worked at fiu here, for many years. I have deep relationships with Faculty Members and students across the spectrum. This is an issue that is concerning. They are receiving funding cuts so universities dont teach gender studies. Its creating a brain dump and our state at a brain drain for a lot of those Faculty Members that are trying to leave the state. They elect someone like myself who understands the needs of education, we need to invest in our students, we need to invest in an Education System thats going to prepare our students for the challenges that we face ahead. Including Climate Change and a Global Economy and a destabilizing balance of power, as we see the war in russia against ukraine. I mean, there are a lot of issues we need to focus. On whats happening here is the most extreme republicans, including rick scott are citing with private companies that are trying to use the Education Culture war for self enrichment. If you dig deep, there is a movement there thats trying to control education so they can make money off of it. We need to go to the place where we have balance and where we protect freedom of speech, when we stop censoring and banning books, and we invest in our students.
