MSNBCW NOW With Alex Wagner October 7, 2014

Cameras are on. I truly regret the words i spoke offended people very much. Men marrying men, entitled to same exact rights. Its tough for me to say joe biden could do that job, hillary clinton, i know could do the job. Sorry. Not sorry. Catch phrase, twitter hashtag and maybe the mantra for joe biden. He is privately behind the scenes busy begging pardon among a host of fragile alliances in the middle east. Saudi arabia up next after United States apologizes to surky over turkey over the weekend. Our biggest problem is our allies. Oural our. He doesnt stop there. He offered a brief History Lesson about the gulf states. And their determination to take down Bashar Al Assad. What did they do, they poured hundreds of millions of dollars into anyone who would fight against assad, except the people who were being supplied, al qaeda andu[u the extremist elems from jihad coming from other parts of the world. So the saudi and u. N. Funneled cash to the area. But wait hes not done. The turks said youre right, we let too many people through, now they are trying to seal the border. His old friend demanded an apology or else he will be history for me. As for the coalition, the administration set as a center piece of its anti isis mission, at the white house, forced to do damage control. The Vice President has enough charkts character to admit he made a mistake. What he didnt say, was that the Vice President was wrong. Joining me now is bbcs correspondent, kim, perhaps josh didnt say the Vice President was wrong because in fact he was right. Sfrz zbl well be. Well indeed, i think what mr. Biden is at fault herec u for being undiplomatic but factually hes not actually wrong because there has been a problem with americas allies in the region funding groups like alnusra in the hopes they can bring down president Bashar Al Assad in syria. The problem is, they feel they have been let down by the u. S. Over the last three years because they have been begging washington to step into what is in essence a vacuum in the region and when the u. S. Did not do that they decided to do it themselves by funding groups which they thought would serve their agenda. If wha so what is missing from Vice President statement is also mea clulpa about washingtons own sins regarding seer. Syria. Isis is at turks doorstep. We have colleagues just on the outskirts. Bbc colleagues on the outskirts of the town of kobani. There is now more coordination between the curdish forces on the ground and the Coalition Troops conducting air strikes to help stem the advance of isis. We will see how it unfolds over the minute by minute development. Theres a lot of pride with their prickly leader. I think factually hes not wrong either when he says the turks have not allowed any armed fighters to cross from turkey into syria. Because a lot of these people w who are joining isis are getting to turkey on tourist visas and the turks are arguing they dont have legal reasons to arrest some of these people. Thats why the u. N. Resolution passed ten days ago was so crucial to stem the flow of foreign fighters, because itf c allows people like france to come and say we think these people are joining isis and you have to arrest them. What is the likelihood of this Fragile Coalition to hold together, the Persia States and western states, the likelihood of boots, someones boots going on the ground get higher as this progresses, whats the likelihood the coalition stays together. Its a very Fragile Coalition and i think one of the key problems is conflicting agendas and conflicting goals. We heard from the 19 . ]uturkish minister who just said the turks are willing to do more if the u. S. Agrees, that there needs to be a nofly zone to help protect civil yaians and if the u. S. Ags one of the goals should be to bring down president assad. For the moment, the u. S. Administration is simply focused on trying to roll back advances of isis. I think that is what will start tearing at this coalition. Thanks as always your your time and thoughts, kim. This is of course not the first time the Vice President has gotten out ahead on a sensitive topic. Joining me now to discuss biden and his bidenisms. Its always a rock and roll time when it comes to the Vice President but this week in particular, referring to loan sharks as shy locks and referring to sing kw you these latest gasps pertaining to the middle east are most serious. How much do you think is an issue fora4r the white house. I think his wild and craziness has been wilder and crazier the past two weeks. When a politician says something is true, programs a little bit inconvenient. Thats what the Vice President has said in the past few days. Thats what the Vice President has said about the coalition and theal y alleys in the region. The allies in the region. He made it sound like turkey purposely allowed this. Its a sensitivity question. Not a question of accuracy. Ive watched biden for decades, hate to admit that, but he has a reputation as a bit of a goof ball but he really is one of 9 smartest guys policy wise on the hill or in the white house. Even if i dont agree with his ideas. They are always well thought out and hes a creative thinker. But he has this way. Yeah there is something about joe. Maybe he is just a3;fi exubt fellows. He is also one of the fiercest of this the white house. At that same harvard event heu chastised certainkkdz secreta that was pinetta and has not been charitable about 9 the president s decision not to take action after assad crossed the line. I want to play a bit. Its tough for me to say joe biden couldnt be the president because he has a lot of experience particularly as Vice President. Hillary clintor clinton i know could do the job. Who needs enemies with friends like that. Squl he is taking the mitt romney line if you really wanted to cut a deal, you could have. It is very easy for panetta to come out and say he should have made malaki do something he wasnt going to do, maybe, but that strikes me as a cheap shot. In washington its all for one and one for one. Thats true. In his book he writes the eltz president relies on a law professor rather than a passionate leader. That combined with the distinction of of him and clinton in 2016, makes you think panetta is gunning for a spot on republican ticket or clinton ticket. I dont think Blind Loyalty serves the Public Discourse too well but theres something unseemly about a guy given two very good positions by this president taking cheap shots from the side. David it is always good to see you. Thank you. After the break, the World Health Organization is warning more cases of ebola in europe are likely. We will look at the global containment efforts coming up. Plus some signs of evolution on the issue of samesex marriage. And later a new poll shows grimes ahead of mcconnell. Ahead on now. We have breaking news this hour, the Associated Press is reporting the ninth Circuit Court of appeals struck down two more samesex rulings. Expected to bring the grand total of states allowing samesex to 35. One would expect the party would be up in arms, theirs is a party that delivered eleven state constitutional al mendme banning in 2004. A law to make it illegal to fire people on their identity. What is the reaction across the u. S. Well, its been kind of hard to hear. As buzz feed reports, the reaction from gop leadership has been virtually nonexistence. Silence remaining the most popular position among republicans. Among the few who dared the discussion, the attitude was largely, keep moving, snnothingo see here. For the fall it will be about what republicans will do to put our spending under control in washington and how to get state budgets under control around get people back to work. So i dont think it isau tz a toptier issue. Its about everything about gay marriage. After all these years is there no one less in the gop who will claim the mantle to basic opposition to civil rights. Turns out there is. His name is raval cruise calling the statement judicial activism at its worse. Joining me now is correspondent at the New York Times and senior republican strategist. Hogan, its been a long time, my friend, im happy to see you back to talk about this very pressing and topical issue given your experience in politics. What do ted cruise and mike and rick have to say to the rand pauls of the republican party. Well, they understand a large portion of the Republican Base y they believe unstaunchly that marriage should be between one man, one woman. They expect their candidates to hold dear to that. It sounds great to say lets the states decide, people like your favorite person, rick perry, and people like ted cruz, you understand you cant have 50 different definitions of marriage. Sooner or later the Supreme Court will have to make a ruling and tell us what they think marriage is, otherwise this fight will never end and get more ugly a krcross the country 35 states, clear precedence, the Supreme Court saying this is where the country is at, were not going to get involved. It wasnt like that 12 hours ago. It all of a sudden changed on a dime. Dont tell me this huge thing is occurring overnight and we all need to get on board. It will still be fought at the state level. This is one of the issues in the president ial campaign, who is your favorite Supreme Court justice. Who would you like to appoint to the bench. Those are one of the most under valued questions and now we are seeing why. These are the kind of activists that change policy and change a nation. And republicans dont like that. Judicial activism, tweeted yesterday, ted calls todays niles of judicial activism which is a synonym for court action i oppose. What he wanted them to do is take up this case and then over turn all of these various Circuit Court decisions. So judicial activism has always been a phrase. But we are having a debate over we should have gay marriage. No one cares if the court is active. This fight is getting less acrimonious. This was a topic of hot debate. Now its become something theres only one position you can take on it in polite society. This is why republicans are uneager to talk about it, they know this is not an issue that doesnt make them look good when they talk about it. Their children will look at them funny when they take the positions the Republican Base wants them to take. The ground is never going to get more favorable for republicans to oppose gay marriage. It will only get less favorable. It will go out with a whimper, the process we dont know how it will go out. We dont even have Circuit Courts upholding. Thats the question, which Circuit Court wants to go against the grain. Seems if you are a Circuit Court judge the road is paved for you. Right. I think we will get a circuit from the south, it looks likely, thats what republicans who are running for president are hoping for. Lets talk about that a little bit. Joshs contention, or scott walkers contention, for us, its over. There are prominent republicans, the head of the Republican National committee doesnt seem eager to talk about this at all. Scott walker, doesnt want to talk about it. Is ted cruz the last guy at the party after the kegs run out. Look, the popular sports comment, it aint over until its over. The ruling on life, roe v. Wade was decades ago. So look, its like 49 people supporting gay marriage. Most people are told, this is about two people who love each other. Now it is trickled into religious liberty and First Amendment rights. Dont you think it is a convoluted argument to say it is denying religious liberty to let others into marriage. If youre going to tell me you can force a a a people who take wedding pictures to take pictures of a gay wedding, you can force them by law, then why cant i force an africanamerican bakery to bake a cake for a white supremist group. It just doesnt work that way. If you want special carve outs for bigotry we can have that discussion. But josh ill let you get in in. Hogan if this is the advice youre giving your clients youre doing them disserve. There is no generational divide on abortion. There is a huge divide in favor of gay marriage. People are dieing literally every day. So thats why it is not going to be like roe v wade. Moorely on that level. Poorly on that level, in terms of 2016 do you think this is something republicans will want to litigate in the primaries. They will have to because voters will demand it. Its not their personal view but now they will have to address the courts and talk about how they would get rid of decisions pushed out by circuit and Supreme Court. Those are things they will have to talk about now. Thats convoluted for sure. If someone doesnt take a stand, they wont get votes. People want to know where they stand on the issue. Obviously this is something we will be talking about a lot in the next months. Thank you both for your time. Thanks. God bless. Good to see you both. Thank you. Just ahead, the man who was blessed with hope trying to hang on to the hope the democrats can keep the senate. Next on now. Woman what do you mean, Homeowners Insurance doesnt cover floods .
