Widespread chaos and confusion. Results from iowa normally give us insight into who could be the democratic president ial nominee. Right now, the candidates are at best in a state of limbo. Heres what we know. It is a tight threeway race at the top. We know that the three of us will be dividing up most of the delegates coming out of iowa. Im feeling good. We were looking at the internal numbers realize that something extraordinary had happened last night. I would say last night was a mess up. I would also say it means this race is wide open. When those results are announced, i have a good feeling were going to be doing very, very well here in iowa. Well, the Iowa Democratic party is working to get this result, get them straight, i want to make sure theyre very careful in their deliberations. We know theres delays, but we know one thing, were punching above our weight. The math that i care most about is the fact that this movement has become something that has already shocked the political world. Based on what we just heard, the adage no news is good news, but not the case for the Iowa Democratic party. Joining me, a team of experts on the ground in that all important state. Mara, tell us what happened between the Iowa Democratic party and the campaigns. We know at least one campaign, Vice President joe biden, already sent a letter. Theyre not happy. Reporter yes, steph, thats right. This is a very brief call. The third Conference Call the Iowa Democrats have held with campaigns in the past 24 hours to give them an update, and like you said at the top of the show, were expected to get a majority of results by 5 00 p. M. Eastern tonight, 4 00 p. M. In iowa. By majority, theres a kind of confusion on the call, whether that means 50 of total precincts in iowa or total precincts the iowa dems have reported. The iowa chairman troy price said it will be more than 50 , thats the only clarification that was had on the call. Im told this is a very tense call, more Heated Exchange with the same sentiment we heard during the two iowa Conference Calls overnight last night after the initial issues with reporting of the iowa caucus. Maura, you spent the day staking out the headquarters. I called the nevada headquarters, all you get is a busy signal. Thats the next state to caucus. Whats happening where you are . Confusion . Whats the actual vibe . Reporter yeah, so were standing outside the iowa dems headquarters in des moines, across from the des moines airport. It is quiet. The staff is working off site at an alternative location. Earlier some precinct chairs came back with packets of results to drop off paper results that we reported earlier that the iowa dems are looking to track one by one. But theres very little activity now because theyre hold away, Iowa Democrats are hold away counting paper ballots. Going back to nevada democrats, theyll have a caucus. Theyre using an app as well. They put out a statement, theyre confident in their app, they will not be changing their plan for the nevada caucus. They noted that they have a different app made by a different vendor from the iowa app itself. Again, we dont have clarification for sure where the app for Iowa Caucuses came from, so thats where nevada is looking ahead for their caucus in a couple of weeks, stephanie. Cal, you have been covering specifically the technicals. What went wrong with the smart phone app, the one they still feel comfortable working with . Reporter there was some software glitch. That was sort of the big story. It didnt happen for everybody but happened for most people. I can point you to emails we were able to get our hands on from different caucus chairs discussing it as early at 9 00 a. M. Yesterday morning, monday morning, before the caucuses opened, well before. People writing nobody having trouble with the app should feel dumb. Few minutes later, i gave up on the app, someone writes. I am not using the app. 9 29, a joke on the email chain, just dont submit your results. Ten minutes later, the app folks wrote in with fresh instructions, fresh pin number how to get that app. Again, for many people, it didnt work. Some people didnt have problems with the app. Want to bring in janice weiner. Did you have any problems, any major issues . A lot of people couldnt get the results submitted. Right. No, i did not have any issues. And i was on the email chain. We viewed, im a member of the board of Johnson County democrats, i was sitting where we are in Johnson County, and we basically viewed it as a tool. They initially gave us test pins to get into it, which were not going to function caucus day, had a pin for our precinct. I had no issues putting the pin in, getting the app to function. You were able to get results in through the app . I cant tell you if my results ultimately went in through the app. I can tell you i entered all of my data in the app, i submitted it, and it told me that my caucus was closed and i had submitted all of the information. At the same time, of course, we had our caucus worksheet. And we had all our information, the initial alignment raw data as well as final results, including delegate breakout and signed by me as precinct chair, by our secretary and by all the campaigns that had been allocated delegates, and the backup is you take a picture. How do you know your results got it in. I contacted the representative for the Second District who has been working this in the run up to caucuses, and i said if you have any issues, let me know, i have a picture of it. He said please send it to me by email, which i did. He called me around midnight asking me a question, was satisfied that we had done all our math correctly and he had what he needed, thats why i know whether by app or by email our results are in. Last one for you before i let you go, it is a twoparter. Are you disappointed how things went, and for the state, should we still be doing it this way, still be caucusing in 2020, going through the difficult issues . A lot of people are saying iowa shouldnt be first and it should just be a primary. I would say what i think a lot of people may not understand, this is an amazing grass roots effort by members of the Democratic Party. It is not run by Auditors Office or formal election people, this is a party run entirely volunteer run effort and i know that in this county and in counties all over the state, volunteers worked incredibly hard to find locations, to get trained, to find volunteers, try to make last evening run as smoothly as possible. Noi t i know my precinct of 525 people ran quite smoothly. People were satisfied with the results. I would just like to get recognition, how hard people worked at the grass roots level, the level of engagement across the state, whether iowa should have a caucus or be first Going Forward is not a matter for me to decide. Vaughn, lets talk a bit more about the app and app developer shadow. What can you tell us . Reporter yes, stephanie. There are questions over the development of the app over the last year, especially in the last six months. Maura and ben have been asking about the app leading up to the iowa caucus this weekend. And the party could never give a competent answer it was ready other than saying they were prepared, it would work, and caucus would go smoothly. Last night that wasnt the case, which led to more questions of who exactly developed the app, and per her reporting and your reporting and josh letterman, this company is shadow incorporated. Were finding out a little more about them because not only has the Buttigieg Campaign contracted out with this developer for building a Text Message Service but the Biden Campaign, as well as the former gillibrand president ial campaign. The Buttigieg Campaign is quite explicit in saying to be clear that they had no affiliation with development of this particular app that was supposed to make the Iowa Democratic caucus go smoothly, yet they did work with them on the Text Messaging Service as well as multiple other campaigns, other party organizations, including the Democratic Party in texas, stephanie. They have more than just a contract with them though, there is another connection. Have they commented . Shadow one of the seed investors is the nonprofit acronym led by tara mcgowan. I want to take this opportunity as we leave ahead to New Hampshire to thank the thousands and thousands of volunteers that helped us knock on hundreds of thousands of doors in the state of iowa, which i think resulted in a very positive result last night. Obviously i am disappointed, i suspect i can speak for all the candidates and their supporters and the people of iowa that the Iowa Democratic party has not been able to come up with timely election results. Cant understand why that happens, but it has happened. I want to just introduce jeff weaver who has some information on the election results. Jeff . Hello, everybody. We have in the interest of transparency, theres no official tallies yet, based on self reported totals from precinct captains across a representative sample of iowa precincts, accounting for 60 of precincts, the results we have currently are in the first round total, senator sanders with 29. 08, mayor buttigieg, 21. 63, senator warren, 19. 51, senator klobuchar, 12. 27, and Vice President biden at 12. 04. Post realignment, numbers of senator sanders, 29. 4, mayor buttigieg, 24. 87, senator warren, 20. 65, Vice President biden 12. 92, and senator klobuchar, 11. 18. Again, the spreads and these results have been consistent all through the night. By the time we had 15 in, these results have held across all reporting. So we anticipate this will hold until the end of the process. What were declaring is what jeff just talked about, based on the information we received from our precinct captains with about 60 of vote in, were in pretty good shape. Whats your reaction to mayor buttigieg last night . I dont know anybody declares victory before you have an official state results. So were not declaring victory. But what we are saying is that time when people of iowa and people of americato know what the result is, they want transparency, and when the Iowa Democratic party is not providing that in a timely manner, we give the results that have come in from precinct captains. [ inaudible ] i dont want to speculate. We worked very hard. As of now i think were in quite good shape, off to New Hampshire, going to work as hard as we can to win in New Hampshire. I think we have an excellent chance to win the democratic nomination, so were anxious to, you know, get to New Hampshire, get to nevada, get to South Carolina, get to california and run the National Campaign to defeat trump. Any concern that this causes some democratic voters to lose faith in the process . It is not a good thing. Thats a fair question. This is not a good night for democracy. If i am a first time voter, came out and voted and results are not coming in for 16 hours, you know, thats a little disconcerting. So the answer to the question is yes. But i think especially in this unprecedented moment in american history, we have to keep our eyes on the prize. That is we have to rally the American People, we have to have the largest voter turnout that we can to defeat a very, very dangerous president. I want to thank them. I really do. We have done i believe about 120 events, spoken to tens and tens of thousands of people, we have had some really great town meetings. People of iowa take enormously seriously their responsibility being the first in the nation to vote. I think the people of iowa have done their duty. Unfortunately, i think the Democratic Party in iowa has been negligent in not getting us timely results. How do you think troy price handled the situation . Jeff has been on the phone with these guys, i havent. [ inaudible ] we should all be disappointed in the inability of the party to come up with timely results. But were not casting aspersions on the votes that are being counted. Theres no excuse for not having results last night. But that doesnt mean to say that the votes, totals that come in will be inaccurate. I think thats an unfair thing to try to do. I mean, tonight was not a good night for the iowa caucus, i think we can say that. I think, you know, the problem is youve got a very complicated system, so it is one thing to get the popular vote, all right, and another thing to get the realignment vote, and it is another thing to determine who won the delegates. And youre asking volunteers all over the state to be able to do that. So i think this is something that people will probably take a look at. From what we, to the degree we have results, we dont k appear they are somewhat higher than they were in 2016, not as high frankly as i would have liked to have seen. Look, we have to get going. Under a cloud of impeachment, think about the position the president is going to be in. By most accounts, he will be acquitted tomorrow. Look at the stock market today. He is going to ride high on the economy, on the stock market. Whats your response going to be . Would you ever think he would be running a victory lap amidst all thats going on . The senate of the United States failed in its own constitutional duty by not conducting a fair trial, a trial without a single witness or single document, so when the president comes in for the state of the Union Address looking forward to tomorrow, we need to remind him that when you have a rigged trial, if you dont have a real trial, then theres no vindication, no exoneration in the outcome. He will claim that. But this was all a fixed, rigged process in the United States senate. Senator, i hear you, and i watched every possible day there was. The president s nearing his highest approval ratings, and tomorrow, Mitch Mcconnell will likely say this is over and done with. Are the actual American People working dayin and dayout, putting food on the table, trying to get kids to school, going to Pay Attention to important details youre talking about when the president is going to say i was exonerated . No, look, i think in the end, stephanie, when we get to these elections, people are going to be most focused on their daily lives, whats impacting them in terms of their kids schools, in terms of retirement, health care. Those are the issues that the campaigns will be fought about, and i will say as the president comes into the house of representatives tonight, he is coming into a chamber that not only worked to hold him accountable but also the chamber that has passed a huge amount of legislation important to the American People, including gun safety, trying to reduce gun violence, you talk about Kitchen Table issues, they passed an increase in the federal minimum wage to 15 an hour, equal pay for equal work. All those things came out of the same Chamber President trump will speak to tonight, and its actually in the United States senate where in addition to failing the American People in terms of a fair trial that Mitch Mcconnell, republicans are sitting on those very important measures, important to the American People and Kitchen Table issues. That neesds to be the focus. I would love to hear the president say lets pass the Prescription Drug bill the house of representatives passed or lets pass other measures. That would be a good night for the country. The house has tried to do a lot as far as Election Security and it has gotten roadblocked in the senate. As long as were talking 2020, is it going to become more challenging for democrats to talk about the importance of Election Security when look what just happened in iowa in the last 24 hours .
