And add vierviser how the white is ill prepared for a takeover by democrats. The white house will be under siege. The barrage of investigations into ethical misconduct in the administration, into the president s businesses and most dangerously into possible impeachment proceedings. I dont think impeachment will happen to the president. Are they going to try to cripple his administration, they will. I hope there wont be violence. The last thing we need to do is monkey this up by trying to embrace a socialist agenda. I think desantis has decided to pull a page from the Trump Campaign play book. People are tired of this race baiting division. It has zero to do with race. It had everything to do with whether we want florida to continue to go in a good direction or do we want to turn to left wing socialist policies. Ron desantis is extraordinary. Ha harvard, yale, brilliant. I know ron and i dont know him to be a racist. That was just a stupid comment to make. He should apologize. Im not going to apologize because i didnt say anything about race. Okay. All thats happened on day two of the florida gubernatorial campaign. The president is worried. Here is why he should be worried. Theres multiple investigations into his campaign and businesses. They are growing and starting to bear fruit. So far theres been one out right conviction of his former Campaign Chairman for bank and tax fraud. Even though these charges rul da all date to before the campaign. The first conviction and prospect of another could cause Serious Problems for the president. In new york theres two immunity deals in place. One for david pecker, the keeper of the president s secret and his money back at the Trump Organization. Both are expected to be questioned about the president s involvement in his form personal attorneys criminal activity. They have secured six guilty pleas in the federal investigation into the campaign and business dealings. One of the pleas was the one that implicated the president. The most staggering numbers, eni indicted on more than 100 charges including conspiracy against the United States and this investigation is barely more than a year in spelling trouble for anyone else trying to hide their involvement. That trouble could get worse after the midterm elections if democrats take the house of representatives when any talk of impeachment could become a real threat and subpoenas could begin flooding into the west wing. The Washington Post details the drain of Legal Resources from the trump white house. Now barely two dozen lawyers. Down from 35 and concerns over a dwindle and preoccupied communication staff. Contrasting it to the Clinton White house during impeachment proceedings with 40 to 60 including a robust media team. President trump thinks maybe he doesnt need a robust media team. Its all him. Jeff, winter is coming. Thats a telling headline on the Washington Post piece and this mass exodus from the white house legal team. The president loves to go after what he calls the bias media attacking him, attacking him. Were talking about mass exodus from the president s own white house legal team. What does that mean . Publicly white house Officials Say this kind of turnover is to be expected. These jobs are grueling. The hours are long. Its a high stress job but prooit prooif privately, our reporting mirrors that of the Washington Post. There are people who fear he lacks the necessary legal fire power to deal with the potential onslaught of inquiries, investigations and subpoenas, if, we have to underscore if, democrats take the house come november. Hes talked about the possibility of impeachment. To take this out of the realm to give you a real life example. Say democrats win come november. They take over the house and leadership of the oversight committees. If they subpoena tack records, white house emails having to do with the family separation policy, the white house will need a fully staff and experienced team, not just in the counsels office but in the comms shop to deal with it. Right now they are understaffed on both fronts. Joyce, this interview, this story in the Washington Post was based on 26 separate source who is said the white house advisors, people close to the president , his aides, are really concerned. If the house flips in november, theres this laundry list we have been showing, a memo that republicans sent out that all the things democrats might do. Theres some real issues at the top of that. Subpoena and impeachment proceedings and the white house isnt prepared for this. It was great that the republicans went ahead and documented the full extent of the swamp so that democrats wont have to do that on their own if they retake the house. Theres some Major Concerns that are evidenced in that list. The problem is that each of these Legal Inquiries is not something thats as simple as responding to a subpoena. It requires a team of lawyers inside of the White House Counsels Office to evaluate whether it asks for material that the white house should turn over in the interest of tra transparency or be protected by executive privilege. They have to think about this administration, this tenure in office. They need to be staffed up with lawyers. They lost three of the white house deputies. A fourth one will lever tomorrow. Its a difficult situation. Aver tomorrow. Its a difficult situation. Ver tomorrow. Its a difficult situation. Ever tomorrow. Its a difficult situation. Er tomorrow. Its a difficult situation. R tomorrow. Its a difficult situation. Tomorrow. Its a difficult situation. If you have a president with continuous outburst. If youre a white house attorney and you want to live beyond this administration, you want to get a job, you want to keep your representation, isnt it wise to say, does this work for me . This president is operating on his own agenda. If you look at his career history, many, many Business People around him have blown up. Figuratively. I think thats the problem. Many people have left this counsels office and now that there are many open slots, people are unwilling to take the job. The president still has the deputy in the counsels office who deals with National Security issues but all the others are missing. The challenge will be to find people who are willing to come in. If you come into the White House Counsels Office at this point, you have to engage in a really pragmatic calculus of whether you might not end up a subject of i venvest vags. It becomes a less appealing job for the caliber of folks that the president needs to attract now. Allies tell the Washington Post that the president is wondering why he doesnt have lawyers like the one representing Jared Kushner or don mcgahn. If youre a lawyer that works for this white house you could face real problems later in life. Some of these people might get themselves implicated into wrong doing. No lawyer wants to end up getting a subpoena and testify on the hill or in front of the special counsel. You run that risk. Not because youre a bad person or a bad lawyer but because you have proximity to events that might come into the terrain that prosecutors are looking at. This is news that the president has expressed he is interested in hiring abbey lowell who works vigorously on behalf of his clients with Great Success but he already represents Jared Kushner. It seems like representing the president in addition would be something of a conflict of interest. The president will have to find and reach out and attract a high caliber of talent willing to serve in this white house. Thats a challenge. Take us inside the white house. All of this is happening, the president is saying this is the media going after me. The white house is being run like a smoothly run machine. All three of us know from our contacts inside the white house thats not true. Oddly enough dent waont wan return my call because they dont want to talk about this tweet. I thought you didnt like those elites. I go back to parenting fiveyearolds. Even if you didnt mean anything by it, you know what solves a lot of problems, saying youre sorry. Lets put the controversy aside and look at Andrew Gillum. Who is this guy . He was one of seven children born to a construction worker and a school bus driver. He became the first in his family to graduate from college. Gillum managed to pull off a major upset on tuesday with the help of grass roots progressive activists. He campaigned directly to millennials and nonwhite voters who usually do not vote in primarie primaries. He was visiting Community Events no matter how small. His goal was to make personal connection with voters and get them out there. His victory is major win for the liberal wing of the Democratic Party. Hes also a vocal advocate of impeachment. His candidacy comes with quite a bit of controversy. Hes been unable to shame associations to an fbi investigations into tallahassee city hall. Rating and federal agents have told him hes not the target. It involves his closest a advisers and republicans are seizing on the investigation hoping to define him as a radical leftist with issue. Hes going to need money. Just a fraction of voters will have chance to meet a candidate. Many more will learn about tv ads and appearances and they cost big bucks. Hes not the target of this i vest gags. Theres another discussion about Andrew Gillum and why he won. I interviewed him three or four weeks ago and he went sure he was going to win. He was way behind in the polls. Some people say its Bernie Sanders endorsement, some say its young people or africanamerican who is came out in force. What do you think made him win . I think its everything you listed and a little more. Phillip and gwen graham and all of these different dynamics just allowed gillum to shimmy, shake and run up the middle. Sorry to use a football metaphor and he won. In a multi candidate race and a big primary like this with so much money, vying for the top seat, it can be a little difficult to poll. With gillum, he also just worked tirelessly. He referenced the New York Times article and shes right. Gillum was everywhere. He really planted his flag here in south florida. Look at the africanamerican vote. It will put him over the top in a big way. He worked but hi didnt spend. He was vastly out spent by his opponents. How important is money now that hes really in the big seat. Money is crucial in florida. Were not one state. Were ten states. We have ten media markets. To advertise statewide it will probably take about 3 million a week to run a saturation tv campaign. These have to raise massive amounts of money in order to benefit nard to pay for tin the tv ads that every one needs to see. He stitched together all of these coalitions, it was the secret sauce or spices that enabled Andrew Gillum to come out on top. Can he repeat that in november . One thing you have to understand about the democrats in the state is they under perform in midterm elections. Even though the democrats out register republicans by two Percentage Points in florida why is that . Thats a great question. I need to say this dip employeematically. When you look at voters performance by race and age, older whiter voters are your most reliable voters. The Republican Party of florida is 83 is white in a state where the registered voters is white. The democratic Voter Registration is 48 white. The democrats while they have a big broad tend with a lot of nonwhite voters, africanamerican, cuban americans, noncuban hispanics, as we call them here, the problem is they are younger and tend to not turn out as much as these older, whiter voters. Theres place in florida known as the villages. Its a mammoth retirement community. It has a continual flow of retirees, by in large white, by in large wealthy or upper middle class. They come in the state and register republican. They are a big key to Donald Trumps rather surprising win in 2016. You have to look at voter performance in the state and historically in midterms, democrats have really suffered when it comes time to show up. They have a big progressive candidate. Theres going to be no excuse for democrats not to show. Pickle ball in the villages. The things i learn with you two. Hes planning to spend more than a hundred Million Dollars on progressive politics in the hope offense a blue wave this november. Hell join us to talk about that plan next. Democrats are finally getting their own version of the koch brothers. Im not sure our next guest will like that description. Billionaire tom styer is spreading around 110 Million Dollar before the midterm election. Making him a huge voice in a party trying to regain power. Tallahassee mayor is the democratic nominee in the state of florida. Tom, welcome. I havent seen you in a while. What does gillum surprise victory mean for democrats . I think what Andrew Gillum represents is a willingness to c confront the real problems that flori floridans face and tell the truth about them straightforwardly and honestly. Many 2018, thats a very exciting prospect. Let me ask you about this. We have talked to Andrew Gillum. Im trying to think about three weeks ago or something. It wasnt look great for him. What do you think caused him to, as a progressive, take the lead in this race and how do you think that works for him main t election . I think the biggest fact is that democratic turn out was up 70 from four years ago. I think what happened is Andrew Gillum was talking directly to the Largest Party in the United States of america which is i dont vote party. They showed up because they could hear him talking about the things that affected them and i think they decided, you know what, this is change. This system is responding to me. I need to go out and vote. Is there a risk that Andrew Gillum got super charged with the backing of Bernie Sanders . Is there a risk that they alienate the party . I dont accept that frame that you just gave dealing with the real problems that americans face. Somehow dealing straightforwardedly dealing with those problems is progressive. Thats telling the truth in a common sense way. I believe thats what americans will respond to. What they have not responded to is political jargon, an unwillingness to face the truth and an unwillingness to deal with the problems that our corporate take over of democracy has left us with. Youre pursuing impeachment against President Trump. Polling still doesnt indicate that half of americans are there yet. About 44 say that the house should consider impeaching donald trump. 47 say no. The margin of error is about 3 . Its close but its not there. Do you think that should be a primary focus of republicans in november . I think the vote in november in the United States will have a big portion of it dealing with a referendum on this administration and this president. Part of that referendum will have to do with his continual constant lawlessness, his disregard for the rule of law and breaking with the American People. I think that regardless of what youre running for, part of the question in the United States is do you believe that the administration and the president should be representing and fairly dealing with all of the American People and should he evade the law. Thats a huge question in american politics. While we find the president comes to lying or lawlessness or prep reprehensible behavior immorally, a lot of people sigh what will keep money in any pocket. That adds up to the president still has 40 of the electorate. How do we talk about that . Let me start with first thing about the economy. At the time of full employment, when growth is pretty good, bwht was saw was the average wamg wage, went down last year. It was up by 2. 9 . Their take home pay could purchase fewer goods and services than at the beginning of the year. Wh when people talk about a successful economy, about 80 of americans this isnt working at all. We agree with you. I find it puzzling when you look at small and Large Business sentiment is up, Consumer Confidence is up. Why is that despite the facts you outlined . Terms of business confidence, my underlying thesis is theres been a corporate takeover of our democra democracy. The result, business is having its way. It got a huge tax cut and the People Associated with big corporations got a big tax cut but the average american did participate in a big way and now were going to see that without the money going into the government, were going have all kinds of can you have thes to their circumstances. Why is Consumer Confidence up . Well what i can say is this, what i look at is how people feel about this president which is you say has been consignificant bconstant but at a low level. Florida is a 70 of democratic turn out last tuesday. What that says is people are deeply upset with this administration. Deeply upset with their policies and deeply upset with their lawlessness. Tom, good to see you as always. Tom is leading an effort to get the president impeached and spending over 100 million on getting Congressional Democrats elected come november. It is interesting because the president talks about how wages are up. They are up 2. 7 . Cancels it out. I think in individual cases people are not feeling one as much as the other. It may take some time for everybody to realize things are costing them the war versus what nay are earning. For sure. A new crackdown on immigration. This time on u. S. Citizens. Welcome back to velshi ruhle. There are new questions surrounding Immigration Enforcement along the u. S. mexico border absolute the u. S. Government continues to crack down on both legal and inlegal immigration. The Washington Post reports the United States is denying passports to americans in south texas, bringing their citizenship into question. Sound familiar . The president has a longstanding history of questioning the citizenship of americans. Here is one tweet from 2012 where he said, quote, an extremely credible source has called my office and told me that Barack Obamas birth certificate is a fraud. Hold on. Wouldnt that incredible source make it an anonymous source . I spoke to donald trump then and he told me his investigators are on the way back from hawaii with irrefutable truth. I said, well gladly stop talking about the story when you stop peddling this nonsense that barack obama is not an american citizen. So sensitive to Anonymous Sources because hes been one for decades. Joining me now us now, excuse me see, so good to be back with my partner kevin sykes, walk us through this. The president seems to be bringing the birther issue back into play. The difference is innocent people are actually ending up in jail. Yeah, i mean, whats happening now is we have hundreds, possibly thousands of people along the u. S. mexico border who are applying for passports or renewing their passports and instead of getting their passports back in the mail theyre getting a letter from the state department that says in fact the government doesnt believe theyre u. S. Citizens, its questioning whether they were actually born in the u. S. So not only are they not getting their passports but their citizenship is sort of thrown into question. Theyre not being deported immediately necessarily, but theyre just sort of stuck in this weird no mans land, not knowing whats going to happen next. I dont know how to even ask this question, but isnt that illegal . Sorry, i cant hear you. Isnt that illegal . Right, thats a good question. So basically what the government is saying is that in the 60s, 70s, and 80s, midwives along the texas mexico border provided some fraudulent birth certificates for babies actually born in mexico. So this happened like 50, 60 years ago. There were a number of midwives who did plead guilty in the 90s to these crimes. Its unclear exactly how many fraudulent documents they provided. But not many. I think what the government didnt realize when they started casting this wide net is that in south texas, a huge number of people, the majority of people during this time period were delivered by midwives because its a very poor part of the United States and midwives had a lot cheaper than hospital care. Now basically what the government is doing is its denying passports to everyone delivered by a midwife over the last 60 years. But if you add those numbers up, were talking about tens of thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands of american citizens who were legitimately born, delivered by midwives, who yes, 40 years ago were convicted of a crime, but a crime of providing very few fraudulent documents. So theyre taking a crime, a decadesold crime that affected very, very few people and applying it to hundreds of thousands of americans. I think its important to say here that some of these people were u. S. Military veterans. One of the men i spoke to served in the u. S. Military, he was a cadet in the u. S. Border patrol. Hes currently a prison guard at a prison in texas. I mean, this is a guy who has served for a huge number of American Public institutions, has previously held a passport, and when he applied for a renewal, suddenly the government mentioned this decadesold crime that, again, he was never convicted of. Its a crime that, you know, the midwife who delivered him may or may not have done. These are extreme, extreme connections to this is a crazy story. Thanks for joining us very much for reporting it, kevin sieff from the Washington Post. With all the problems we face in this country, creating another one. Time for todays monumental american. Mary ross was the first known native American Woman engineer whose work helped put people on the moon. Born in 1908 in oklahoma, she was the greatgreatgranddaughter of chief john ross of the cherokee nation. She excelled in math and after college took a job at lockheed Aircraft Corporation where she worked on several important projects. It gives me the chills just hearing about her. Ross was selected to be part of a Top Secret Team to work with nasa, and her research led to the u. S. Moon landing in 1969. She also helped write nasas planetary flight handbook and contributed to planning flights to mars. After her retirement she dedicated her life to helping women and native americans succeed in s. T. E. M. Fields. She died three months before her 100th birthday in 2008. If you have a monumental american, please tweet it to us velshiruhle.
