And intel this is President Trumps first time waking up in trump tower since taking office. And it wasnt exactly a warm women come. The latest gallup poll finds the president with his worst Approval Rating yet at 34 . The president as we mentioned is up and tweeting. What is he saying . He sure is. And these tweets may be giving some of his critics even more fodder. The president himself this morning is retweetingltright l. I think if they fire at the United States, it could escalate into war very quickly, yes. That is called war if they shoot at us. If they do that, then its game on. Kim jongun now says he will wait and watch before deciding to launch. They are discounting those reports that kim jongun has blinked if you will. A smiling kim saying he will make a decision about his threat to guam if the yankees persist. We wont know whether its a dummy missile or armed missile until it hits and we wont know exactly where its targeted, the waters off of guam or hitting guam itself. We would have only a matter of minutes to make a judgment call. All right. Well, already this morning President Trump went off the rails on twitter a fallout continues over his response to saturday respond to the deadly violence in charlottesville. No sign of his agenda. All hes talking about is unrelated hears. This is trump tower. Hallie is on her way there. Hundreds lined the streets yesterday, the president visited for the First Time Since his inauguration. No trump, no kkk no fascist usa. Protests didnt let up despite trump giving a second statement on what happened in charlottesville and explicitly condemning White Supremacists and other hate groups who incite violence. Maybe one of the reasons is because just hours after that scripted announcement, trump himself, and he controls his twitter account, not his speechwriters, retweeted and altright activist who is demanding to know why there was no media outrage over a rash of shootings in chicago over the weekend. This activist who the president retweeted is known for pushing fake conspiracy theories, including one claiming that Top Democrats were involved in a childs sex trafficking ring in a d. C. Pizza shop. And i want to remind you, i want to define what the altright is again. It aint no radio station. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, the altright is a group of rad cic which extremist conservatives and their ideology is based on White Supremacists. They are racist, antisemitic and and it i immigrant. This recruit young white he had indicated individuals, the altright became mainstream during the 2016 election in large part because steve ban no put them there. And today he retweeted a story claiming that trump was considering pardoning former arizona sheriff joe arrepaio wh was recently convicted. In response to that, a twitter using wrote hes not a hes a fascist, so not unusual. Which one might think is a criticism of donald trump. But then he retweeted that. That was deleted moments later. And finally, this. President trump, the president of the United States, retweeting this image of a trump train splashing into a human, its a cartoon, when you smabut smashi person with a cnn low go coveri its face. That post was also deleted. And dont forget this comes just three days after an innocent woman was killed from being hit by a car mowed down by a white supremacist at that rally in charlottesville, virginia. The white house has so far not explained the trump train tweet on record, but one white house official requesting anonymity offered this, quote, it was inadvertently posted and as soon as it was noticed it was immediately deleted. I want to point this out to the white house, given all that is going on, given that there were nazis rioting in the streets he overs weekend, the tensions around the world in terms of twitterer and retweeting, youre the white house. Tighten up your game. A lot of people are saying the white house wont be able to tighten up its game. Donald trump is also under pressure by large american businesses over his response to the violence in charlottesville. Yesterday three top ceos announced they were stepping down from the Manufacturing Council. Kenneth frazier came first of merck. Kevin blank under armour announced that he is pulling out. And intel also pulled out from the manufacturing down silg. The council. There are almost 30 organizations on that council. Intel,e intel, under armour and merck is gone. So those three have resigned. They are frustrated that donald trump has not been able to move on with his agenda as stephanie said. Im not able to move and you might also point out head of the Manufacturing Union said these councils are not actually doing anything. So the argument that we hear over and over from the jamie dimons and jeff immelts, i want a seat at the table, a table doing what . Thats right. And thats what a lot of these ceos are frustrated by, that they are there, they sit around, they get into photoopes, but they are not getting anywhere. Jeff immelt did say that it is important to have a role when the administration is discussing manufacturing and other matters, but we discuss it a lot, we talk about what the various options can be. But these do tend to be photoopes f photoops for the president. And remember, its not easy for them to walk out. There is a lot at stake. And then there is this are there elements of White Supremacy within the white house right now . Is steve bannon a white supremacist . Again, i dont think hes a white supremacist, although ive never asked him. What i dont like though is the toleration of it. Its something that should be completely and totally intolerated. So for me i dont know why anybody is clapping to that. The mnuchiooch, Anthony Scari who lit position in flames in 11 days, he is the voice of reason on Stephen Colbert last night saying that steven bannon, one of the most senior people in the white house who stood alongside President Trump on that campaign tram and on the podium when he won tolerates White Supremacy. So to those who say that trumps messaging is tough, bum but im here for the agenda, we havent seen much of any agenda it 00s moving forward. Still havent seen tax reform. Still a piece of paper with no meat on the bones. So know that your legacy is tied to being inside of a white house where someone who at the we have least tolerates White Supremacy holds a lot of weight. Joining us now, author of the gatekeep gatekeepers, how the chiefs of staff define every presidency. And bill kristol from the weekly standard. Chris, there does seem to be information that john kelly is trying to get his hands around the steve bannon situation. There was an interview with hr mcmaster where he wouldnt even say that he could really work with steve bannon. So bannon is something. Were not quite sure what his role is and what power he has with the president , but this weekend has brought it into sharp bannon may well be the least of his problems. Two weeks ago, it was dysfunctional. And its one selfinflicted wound after another. The first statement on charlottesville was beyond the pale. Absolutely without precedent. The clooeanup statement was may a glimmer of hope that kelly was pushing back and trying to tell donald trump hard truths. But the truth is here that this is a white house that is broken, that hasnt been annuything rig. It desperately needs focus and discipline to get anything done. And the problem is that at the very top, you have a guy donald trump for whom focus and discipline are anathema. So almost mission impossible. Why are we believing this narrative that steve bannon is on an island and people in the white house say hes on his last leg. There . President trump himself manages his twitter account. He was the one at the podium on saturday who looked up from the script and said all sides when there werent. Trump should be the focus. The key he will be president for some period of time, maybe 3 1 2 years, maybe less depending on what Robert Mueller finds. Maybe more. Conceivably moore. I hope not. And if he will be president , he needs to be contained. Ive been struck by the analogy for the last day or two, we contained the soviet union. Where we wont change trump. People should stop hoping that he becomes who he is not. People like me were willing to give him something of a chance when he was elected. Maybe he would rise to the occasion at least somewhat. He really hasnt. So how do you contain trump . Congress has to step up, governors and mayors have to step up, civil society, the media, business has to step up. I think its important that he be what works . Isolation, pushing back, plea veptding him from gaining strength, containing him as the term suggests. And that is where i will defend john kelly and hr mcmaster for serving in this administration. I think that they are to make se fundamental policies dont cause war and dont isolate us and lead tooutcomes. In that respect, its a totally unlike any other white house weve ever seen. Chief of staff of the National Security adviser, their job is as much containing donald trump as it is helping donald trump. Its an interesting approach. Let me ask you this, chris. We have john kelly apparently having spoken to the president this weekend implied that if you dont come out and make another statement about charlottesville, you are imperilling your skinny agenda because republicans had turned against the president on this one or at least defined how they reacted to White Supremacy different than the president. Address then t and then the ceos. Donald trumps response to merck was to tweet now that ken frazier has resigned from the president S Manufacturing council, he will have more time to lower ripoff drug prices. So the first i think sting wnst oig t troll the ceo about that. This is kellys fundamental problem. He has to deal with donald trump. He said i will just manage the staff, not the president. Well, he doesnt have a choice. Leon panetta and james baker would be the first to tell him that you have to be the guy who walks into the office, closes the door and tells donald trump what he does not want to hear. One thing trump has not learned lets assume for the moment that hes learned the first lesson which is that you have to empower a white house chief of staff to execute youred a skren today. T agenda. The second lesson is that goofrning is nothing like campaigning. Reagans final chief of staff will tell you that campaigning, you try to annihilate your opponent. When youre governing, you have to make love to your opponent. You have to form coalitions. And trump has no idea of how to govern. I think that is true, but i think that would be they need to limit the damage that donald trump does. All the animalogies are interesting. Ive discussed this with leon panetta. But i dont think it will be like that and not much point hoping. Should he continue the service that you say hr mcmaster and john kelly are involved in because it prevents worse things from happening . I think for thnow. I think there will be a point where they will feel they cannot serve in good conscious and it will be a tough call. We dont know what they might be achieving. So i give them the benefit of the doubt because i have high regard for them. The last general who served as white house chief of staff did perform a service during the final days by keeping the Nuclear Codes away from Richard Nixon who was drinking heavily and talking to the oil portraits. He and secretary of defense schlesinger decided that they needed to be notified if anything went on between nixon. All right. Interesting points. Thank you very much for doing it with us. Extraordinary. Next, protesters this durham, North Carolina topple a confederate statue, but hundreds of other monuments are Still Standing around the country. Symbols of racism and treason. Well speak with the mayor of lexington, kentucky who is planning to remove two confederate statues in his town. And late night shows took a break to address the violence in charlottesville. Here is jimmy fallon with an emotional monologue last night. Even though the tonight show isnt a political show, its my responsibility to stand up against intolerance and extremism as a human being. What happened over the weekend in charlottesville, virginia was just disgusting. The fact that it took the president two days to come out and clearly denounce racists and White Supremacists is shameful. And i think he finally spoke out because people stood up and said something. We all need to stand against what is wrong, acknowledge that racism exists, and stand up for what is right and civil and kind. And to show the next generation that we havent forgotten how hard people have fought for human rights. We cannot do this. We cant go backward. We cant go backward. Welcome back to velshi ruhle. You are looking at livismages from trump tower where protesters showed up yesterday. The president was there for the first 9 11 since his inauguration. After the attack in charlottesville, protesters are showing up not just in virginia, but in cities across the country. Why do you carry that flag . Because this is my hair dama heritage. My family fought to save their farm. They are protesting over 1,000 monuments that still stand on public property honoring leaders of the con ffederacycon. This is part of a larger push to take down those memorials. Yesterday it n. Durham, North Carolina protesters took things in to their own hands and toppled a confederate statue. People cheered, everyon began kicking the monument. And a Confederate Flag on the South Carolina headline mass headlines in 2015 when authorities learned that a convicted mass murderer dylann roof who shot and killed nine black Church Members in charleston was inspired by that very flag. You might be surprised to learn how many confederate symbols remain on public land. Last year in 2016, the Southern Poverty Law Center identified more than 1500. This map that you are looking at shows the majority of monuments located in the former confederate south. The center found 718 confederate monuments or statues, 109 Public Schools named after confederate generals robert e. Lee and 80 counties or cities also named after lee. And get this, ten of our u. S. Military bases are named after confederate leaders. Take a look at some of the memorials. This carving on a Stone Mountain shows robert e. Lee and his commanding officers. Work first began in 1915 and was completed in 1925. These four statues down in new orleans have since been removed. And in kentucky, lexington mayor is pushing to remove two very controversial statues from a former county courthouse. Mayor gray is here to talk about that now. And it certainly is a complicated one. Mayor, thank you for joining us. Give us your actireaction to charlottesville. Well, i have our city have been examining these two statues for some time now. Literally almost two years. Now, charlottesville actually in some sense accelerated our decision. I had already prepared to present to our council a resolution to remove these two stat statues. Why . Well, its really important to put this in context. These two statues today stand on ground that is really sacred. It was at one time a slave Auction Block called cheap side. One of the largest in the south. So these two monuments, two men who fought to preserve slavery are standing today on sacred ground where men, women and children once were sold into slavery. So it just wasnt right. Just not right. So mayor, what is the conversation like in lexington . Because obviously these conversations will be going on across the country. And they are on some level conversations that have been going on for 150 years. So how do you manage the conversations that you dont end up with Something Like that happened in charlottesville . Because there are strong views and people will protest. Youre right. And thats why for some time now weve been engaging in the conversation about these statues. We had
