For cruz in the primary last week, saying it was time to take back the country. Fiorina immediately launching into an attack on cruzs rivals. Donald trump and Hillary Clinton are two sides of the same coin. Theyre not going to reform the system. They are the system. Hillary clinton has made millions of dollars selling access and influence from the inside, and donald trump has made billions of dollars buying people like Hillary Clinton. They are the system. They will not reform it. And joining me now, ron naehring, National Spokesperson for the Cruz Campaign. Senator cruz at this rally still going on said that this endorsement from Carly Fiorina is a sign that the party is coalescing behind him. You obviously know that people will say Carly Fiorina had a failed campaign. So how is that a sign that the party is now coalescing around him . You know, i have known Carly Fiorina for some time. I was the chairman of the California Republican party when she was our nominee for the United States senate in 2010. She was a very, very, and still is, a very powerful spokesperson. She has a constituency in the Republican Party. Shes going to be a great asset to the cruz team going forward. Its clear ted cruz has a tremendous amount of momentum. Hes only 99 delegates behind donald trump. The field continues to narrow. Most republicans dont want donald trump to be the nominee. As the race becomes a twoperson race, those republicans who want an alternative to donald trump, a proven conservative, will have an opportunity to nominate ted cruz. This is terrific news. Were very excited about it. How is it terrific news when you know she was a candidate, Carly Fiorinas jobs record was questioned, laying off american workers, outsourcing, being a failed businesswoman and a failed candidate. What does she bring to the equation here of benefit to senator cruz . Well, i think, look, politics aint bean bag. Carly ran for senate, she ran for president. Of course, shes going to be attacked by people. That doesnt take away from the fact shes a very articulate spokesperson. Shes going to do a great job on the campaign trail. Again, something were very excited about. It further adds to the momentum that senator cruz has at this critical juncture, as this becomes a twoperson race, which it is a twoperson race in our view in terms of taking a look at the delegate counts. As this becomes one candidate versus donald trump, this is the type of thing we want to see. There will be more of that to come, of course, as support continues to build. But again, were so excited to have carly on the campaign trail, and you can just see the response this morning. Both on twitter and at the event itself, to this announcement. That crowd was on fire. And thats a terrific thing to have in a campaign. Again, when you have a surrogate or someone who endorses you like a Carly Fiorina who still has the one of the most infamous debate moments of this election cycle, her claim she had seen this planned parenthood video that to this point shes not produced, to this point, even the Fact Checkers say does not exist. Again, going back to some of the problems she brings to your candidate, are you concerned at all about that . No. Because you can see the Tremendous Positive response that an endorsement from Carly Fiorina brings. There will be more to come. We had the endorsement of several governors recently. That win last night in the state of idaho. We overperformed in other states. Senator cruz has a tremendous amount of momentum, and he welcomes the support of Carly Fiorina and other people who will come on board as well. Lets go to what played out last night. We saw a win in idaho, but several other wins for donald trump. You saw his News Conference yesterday that many people compared to a qvc moment when he brought out all his products. The bottom line, his message was, the headline is that he was the clear winner again last night. And if the plan is to have a oneonone showdown between senator cruz and donald trump, that does not appear to be in the cards. Marco rubio is not getting out. John kasich not getting out. So this oneonone matchup that your candidate desires, and donald trump claims he desires, that is not going to happen at this point. So what do you see playing out before florida . Well, a couple things. One is that that was truly a Bizarre Press Conference from donald trump yesterday. And we just, were seeing so many people on twitter mocking it for having his wine out there and all these other products. Just bizarre. But he also he lied last night as well. Hes so desperate to try to mischaracterize ted cruz. He said, quote, ted cruz never beats him. That isnt true. We have beaten him eight times. Landslide victory in the state of canc caps. We tied him in the state of louisiana. He was way up in the state of maine. We won in the state of maine, in the state of alaska, the state of idaho. Donald trump just has a problem, as senator cruz articulately put it, a tenuous relationship with the truth. This campaign will eventually come down to a twoperson race. Its a question of when exactly that happens. Thats the critical question because it does depend on when it happens. If were looking at the numbers coming out of florida right now, i believe the latest numbers show senator cruz in third place there. In ohio, it is again donald trump there. I think people understand clearly that your campaign wants a oneonone showdown, but if donald trump takes florida, if he takes ohio, where then do you stop him . Well, well see about that. Look, the polls yesterday lets look at these polls very realistically. Hillary clinton had a 17point lead over Bernie Sanders in the state of michigan, and she wound up losing. Donald trump was way up in the state of maine, and we wound up winning. So the voters ultimately will have their own their voice heard when they cast their ballots. Were going to fight this campaign. This is a 50state campaign. My state of california votes last. We vote on june 7th. We have been organizing in california since august. Can senator cruz win california . Senator cruz in the most recent poll in california is up by two points over donald trump. That poll was taken in january. Im confident that the numbers would be even better today. So yes, were prepared to go all the way to the end to make sure we do not have a contested convention. The voters all have their says, and were confident at the end of the day its going to come down to a twoperson race, and ultimately, senator cruz is going to win the nomination. Quickly here, going back again and looking forward to ohio and florida. If the polls reflect the outcome that donald trump somehow pulls out even the malle stmallest of victories in those states, you still feel confident all of these reports, all of this speculation, the numbers games that show that essentially he has run off with this nomination, that he steam rolled through, youre not buying that for a second . Its not over after ohio and florida . Look, i served on the Republican National committee for four years, including as a member of the Standing Committee on rules. I understand the rules of the party. We need 1,237 delegates. And until someone gets 1,237, there is no nominee. Right now, donald trump is about 400 delegates. We have about 300 delegates. No one is close to hitting that number, which means its wide open. The voters of every single state deserve to have their voices heard in this process. All right, ron, thank you so much for joining us. Breaking news from your campaign, that endorsement from Carly Fiorina. Thank you, ron. And exit polls show Donald Trumps double digit wins yesterday came amid strong support from evangelicals, which were supposed to be senator cruzs bread and butter. So to speak. Trump also won strong support from voters who identify th themselves as conservative and from men and voters concerned about electability against a democratic opponent. Peter alexander is covering the trump campaign. One thing we see again, trump suffering with female voters. That may be a part of the cruz followup strategy today, bringing out Carly Fiorina, one of two women who ran for president in this cycle, and perhaps the Cruz Campaign sees an opening here. That set aside, last night was pretty interesting. Strange is what some are calling it. How donald trump handled himself with his victories. Yeah, i think thats exactly right, tamron. Thats a strategy ted cruz is focused on right now, trying to gather up republican women who live in the big city suburbs going forward. It certainly is something Hillary Clinton and her team will be focused on if donald trump becomes the Republican Party nominee. I want to focus on what we saw last night, and part of the reason some women have been turned off by donald trump is by the harsh language he used on the campaign trail, his vulgarty at times. Theres a new ad airing in the state of florida, in the florida panhandle, according to sources behind the ad, that focuses on Donald Trumps use of vulgarity. I asked him if he was embrarsed by it. After he largely ignored the question and acknowledged the ad was pretty good, he said i can be president ial when i need to be. Ill be very president ial, second only perhaps to abraham lincoln, to paraphrase what he said, is what he said last night. I followed up and asked him how he thought americans who were struggling with the language to try to explain this to families and to children. Heres what he said. Oh, youre so politically correct. Youre so beautiful. Look at you. Oh. Hes so oh, i know. Youve never heard a little off language. Youre so perfect. Arent you perfect . Arent you just a perfect young man . Give me a break. You know what. Its stuff like that that people in this country are tired of, okay. Still trump was among the first to acknowledge he didnt think using that kind of language was president ial, and he knew he needed to clean up his act. He said he would as he got further in the campaign and if he becomes the Republican Party nominee. He also showed success in mississippi and michigan, both of which were open primaries, independents and even democrats could vote. A different deal, tamron, when he gets to florida. Its a closed primary, but the polls do show him with a wide advantage in the state, much more competitive in the state of ohio. So if kasich wins his home state of ohio, you have ted cruz feeling good, john kasich feeling terrific, and donald trump still leading. More likely than not, all three of them stay in the race. And if that happens, it likely helps donald trump. And quickly, back to this moment of this, like i say, calling it a Home Shopping network thing where donald trump rolled out all of these products. There is a thought out now, and im sure you know that people are saying this may have backfired. That some of those products are not even for sale, specifically these steaks that he rolled out. As an example of his business success, to push back on mitt romney. That this again may be just all theatrics because one of those companies is not even in business anymore. Well, everyone would agree donald trump is a terrific showman. Hes been one throughout the course of this campaign. It was obvious this presentation was in part to sort of rebut what mitt romney had said about his business record. He held it at an exclusive country club that bears his name. But as she showed off trump steaks and trump magazine and trump wines, just breaking them down, trump steaks, according to the wall street journal, has been discontinued for years. It used to be sold on the Sharper Image website. The website itself acknowledges they are no longer for sale. The wines, well, there is a trump winery, but the winery says that its associated with eric trump, his son, not with donald trump himself. Nonetheless, with the trump name. The magazine or we should say the water as well, the water is produced elsewhere, with the trump label on it. And provided on his specific properties only. Thank you, peter. The latest quinnipiac poll released just this morning shows donald trump leading marco rubio by a two to one margin in rubios home state. After a dismal day yesterday, pressure is growing for the florida senator to drop out of the race. He says hes going nowhere. Politico Senior Writer marc caputo covers florida. He knows it better than anybody. He joins us. Lets talk about whats happening here. The victories yesterday for donald trump, some of the group whose have put out the attack ads make the point they didnt make heavy investments yesterday. Its florida, where they have put a lot of money by the millions, and this is where they hope their attack ads will pay off to stop donald trump. Well, to begin with, we dont see any evidence that marco rubios campaign can afford to do any attack ads. He has to rely on the super pacs. He looks like hes starting to run out of money which happens when you have a string of losses. What interesting about the quinnipiac poll, it has a different methodology which probably polls people who night not be likely republican voters. But every poll shows donald trump winning either by high Single Digits or mid double digits, 20 points, 15 points, 16 points. Winning since august. So i really dont see at this point how rubio can pull it off unless he has a fantastic ground game. He looks like he really started to do that about last week, the week before last. That might have been too late. Florida doesnt have an election day. It has election days. Well have been voting for about a month by march 15th, by tuesday. And so far, about 750,000 republicans have already cast early and absentee ballots. Thats a lot. Probably looking at a turnout from 2 million to 2. 3 million. At least 30 , 35 of the electorate is already in. Looking back at his senatorial run and the battle against Charlie Crist which marco rubios campaign is pointing to as how hes able to beat the odds. You have some, marc, who say part of marco rubios problem is that he really wasnt vetted. He hasnt had a chance to grow as a senator, even though as well, barack obama was a firstterm senator when he went on to be president. But this may be behind some of the resistance with floridians to support him. You have talked to folks there. Why arent they supporting the home team guy, so to speak . Well, a famous saying that elections are about choices. When people put donald trump up against anybody in the republican primary here in florida, in a crowded race, they just like trump more. He is i think it was peter who said hes a great showman. People really like the show. Theres a variety of reasons that donald trump appeals to republicans. Not just one reason. And yeah, its true that rubio kind of got in office and shortly after getting in office, he was soon vetted and mentioned as a possible Vice President ial candidates, and then he started running for president in the 20152016 cycle. But immigration probably played a bit of a role in making some of the grassroots hardcore conservatives angry because in 2010 when he campaigned he said he was against amnesty, and then what he wound up doosh is embracing a bill or supporting a bill with a pathway to citizenship. A variety of different factors that play into it. Donald trump yesterday mentioned in his estimation, these attack ads or ads in general dont matter. He perhaps can say that because he has a 100 name i. D. However, again, a lot of his business dealings have come into question. You have the two ads, and set aside the ad about him swearing. You still have the trump university, and then you have this ad featuring war veterans who have come out against donald trump. And its being heavily played. Is any of that resonating . Set aside the theatrics and showmanship. You have again an ad who would certainly resonate Something Like this in traditional campaigns. War vets coming out against a candidate. Well, what we have seen with donald trump and a lot of the exit polls and a lot of the polling since is that the people who support donald trump had their mind really made up compared to those who support the other candidates. And all of the surveys, all the research so far really indicates that in a crowded race, in a crowded republican primary, he does really well. If it gets to a oneonone matchup, hes going to have a far tougher time. Right now, polk indicates that probably is ted cruz. I dont want to write off marco rubio in florida. We dont know how the 750,000 republicans so far have voted. We dont know how good his ground game has been. Theres a chance he can still pull this off. All the surveys indicate otherwise, but back to donald trump, once he carries on in florida, if he wins and gets 99 delegates here. If he wins in ohio, gets another 66. Hell be at 620, half needed to win at convention. Its going to be challenging for ted cruz to beat him unless he goes to a brokered convention and somehow pulls it out. Great pleasure having you on. Tonight, Nbcs Chuck Todd will host a town hall with senator marco rubio. 8 00 p. M. Eastern time only on msnbc. Coming up, our nbc exit polling shows Bernie Sanders winning by double digits with independents and again with young voters in his upset victory out of michigan, a state where Hillary Clinton was favored to written. Well look ahead to sanders strategy coming up, and ill talk live with Hillary Clintons campaign insider, an insider with a look at whats happening thats next. Plus, the man accused of shooting an idaho pastor who led a prayer at a ted cruz rall
