Block 25 billion for states to conduct testing and contact tracing. The money was actually put into the next relief bill by senate republicans, not Democrats SenateMajority Leader Mitch Mcconnell and the top house republican, kevin mccarthy, are expected to discuss the bill with President Trump later today. Weve got reporters spread out across the country i want to start with sam brock in miami beach where a new curfew is in place to keep this virus from spreading sam, whats going on there steph, good morning good to be with you. Curfews all over the region. Miamidade has a 10 00 p. M. Curfew broward county, an 11 00 one that expires in two weeks and miami beach, 8 00 p. M. , dinnertime, steph. Thats just over my shoulder across the bay here. All efforts to curb the spread of the coronavirus as the state of florida has now cracked 10,000 cases five days in a row. That brings the total about 350,000 infections since this pandemic began hospitals right now are under strain miamidade is reporting 127 of icu bed capacity in their hospitals. At the same time, though, the state is reporting miamidade has 22 availability so, clearly there is some disconnect here but one thing thats irrefutable, the economic toll that these curfews and measures are taking. We spoke with visitors coming from out of town to enjoy miami beach yesterday. Heres what they had to say. The thing that bothered me. Everything is shut down at 8 00. Early shutdown People Like Us that travel a Long Distance to come here, we come to have fun, you know but you got to get in, get out is there a disappointment factor to knowing you cant stay out beyond 8 00 . Yeah, yeah. Everything is shut down. Another point to add here, Miamidade County on saturday stopped reporting its Positivity Rate which at last check was 27 over two weeks the reason why, they say there are discrepancies with the state over what miami is doing performing in that regard and how florida has calculated itself they are trying to reconcile those differences today. Well see where that goes but it could make a big difference when you consider things like schools reopening. 27 versus 17 is a canyon sized difference steph . Indeed it is. Sam, thank you lets head to texas where we learned this weekend that 80 of residents are living in whats known as red zones, seeing spikes in new cases. Nbcs Morgan Chesky in dallas which is one of the red zones. Before we get to texas, i want to ask about you this is the first time were seeing you since you were diagnosed with coronavirus how are you doing . Yeah, its been really a surreal experience and it was a month ago today i was eating breakfast when i realized i lost that sense of taste and smell. That telltale sign. What followed was a combination of symptoms. I had a dull headache for the better part of a week. I was so exhausted i didnt really leave bed for the first several days and also body aches that would come and go throughout that process. I was lucky in that i had a mild case i never had th whole lot of difficulty breathing. But what stuck with me is that the recovery from this has taken longer than i had really anticipated in that smaller tasks, physical or mental, are made just a little harder, even today. And so fortunately, the recovery is ongoing and im doing all right. But thats what surprised me i think in the past whenever i would have gotten sick it would have been a two to threeday recovery and this is significantly longer but it is good to be back. Steph . Its really good to see you back tell us whats happening in texas where you are today. Yeah, its tough. Nearly all of the trends or statistics that should be going down are not doing so. And one in particular has really caught my eye. Nearly 4,000 texans have died as a result of covid19 and about onefifth of that number happened just last week so were looking at hospitalizations staying stable or continuing to go up across the state of texas we know that, in particular, those counties along the border in south texas, Hidalgo County, and nuasis county. Over the weekend, 85 infants were diagnosed with covid19 the virus rate growing rapidly in that area and Hidalgo County is one of those places where federal medical teams have been sent to try to help out those hospitals that are just struggling to maintain the flow of patients. I spoke to one hospital in particular that had to have patients waiting in ambulances outside so they could make room for on beds inside. They had construction crews working overnight to try to enlarge a new wing to put more beds in there. Meanwhile, here in dallas, it is and houston, its just watch and wait as these numbers continue to go in the opposite direction of where they should be going steph . Construction crews trying to enlarge a new wing of a hospital morgan, thank you for joining us and updating us. Great to see you back, and stay safe get healthy. I want to take you to los angeles where the mayor there says theyre on the brink of another stayathome order jo ling kent is there. You have more than 2200 people hospitalized are they getting close to Maximum Capacity well, the real story here, in addition to that critical number you just mentioned here, is that there are 2,800 new confirmed covid cases here in l. A. County. And within that, 53 , a majority are people under the age of 41 and so youre seeing a younger and Younger Group get hit with this virus very hard and this comes as over the weekend, california surpassed 380,000 coronavirus cases. And as you mentioned, eric garcetti, the mayor here in los angeles, says we are now on the brink of new restrictions to roll back the reopenings that started back on may 8th. That was when Governor Newsom started reopening the states and hospitalizations here and deaths have nearly tripled across the board since the reopening process started. The urgency really lies in that number that 53 of new cases being people under the age of 41 the l. A. County Public Health director, Barbara Ferrer she issued this statement. She says right now youngg hospie not seen before. No matter how young you are, youre vulnerable to this virus. The Public Health director goes on to say, i urge everyone to take collective responsibility stay physically apart from people you dont live with properly wear a Face Covering when outside your home but stay home as much as possible so l. A. County and the entire state of california very much feeling the pressure and the pain here from covid as those cases continue to rise steph . Jo, thank you now we know whats happening across the country lets dig into what it means to you. Right now we are joined by dr. William hazeltine, the president of Access Health international he also wrote a family guide to covid questions and answers for parents, grandparents and children. Dr. Hazeltine, we need all of those answers. I want to start by sharing can you explain to us . The white house is now trying to block more money for the cdc for funding for testing and contact tracing. Why would they do that its totally baffling i think you cant ive been looking through history to find out if theres a government that has done so badly in an epidemic, a pandemic the only thing that comes to mind is nero watching while rome burned this is an International Disgrace this government seems to be doing not what it can to prevent the disease but to accelerate the disease. It is absolutely horrifying to anybody in Public Health and this is just the latest. To think that people are dying, that they are rushing to hospitals, that our hospitals are full because were doing more testing is absurd its just it boggles the mind and so i think its time for we, the people, to send messages to our elected officials who will listen and tell them, enough is enough lets talk about school because we are one week closer to the start of school we know we have not gotten official cdc guidance. Do you think School Districts, cities, localities have the resources and guidance they need to safely reopen the answer is clearly no. There is some very rough guidance matter of fact, im writing a new book to help people understand how to think about their risk and the risk of their children of School Reopening i think the first thing were saying is be aware of how many people in your community are infected the second thing is be aware of your personal risk and the risk to your child. Do they have predisposing factors. The third is to understand what your school could be doing about it and what are their backup plans. But i can tell you, as we look across the country, and as i hear people who are speaking to me, there is deep confusion. And if there is going to be a Tipping Point where the people of this country say, enough is enough, i believe it will be over the issue of their children they may be a republican they may be a democrat they may be a libertarian, but everybody wants to protect their child. And when it comes to this issue, we just dont have the guidance. We dont have the federal guidance, state guidance, and the local communities dont have the resources to train, to add the extra people to put in the protections. We are going into a crisis that is a dinner table conversation every night with concerned parents. All right well then talk to me im a parent the administration keeps telling us that kids cannot spread this disease. But theres a new study out of south korea that says middle school and High School Students are just as likely to spread the virus as adults. Well, in fact, even younger children do. But the first thing is anybody over 10, or 11, is essentially equal to an adult in their ability to get sick and their ability to spread the virus. Now it seems as if young children, at least some young children, are about onethird more resistant to getting the virus. That says nothing about their ability to spread. Think of this. This is a cold virus you and i and Everybody Knows how you get a cold you send your kid to school and he comes back and gives you a cold this is a cold virus its a cold virus with a very unpleasant audatidditive of kilg people but a cold virus if you look at the number of young children, infants under age of 1, a number of children under the age of 10 getting this terrible multisystem inflammatory syndrome. Its unpleasant. And its very dangerous. I think any parent that thinks they should send their kid back to school while an epidemic is in their community really ought dr. Haseltine, thank you for joining me every time youre with us, you make us better you make us smarter. We now have to turn to a very upsetting breaking news story from my home state of new jersey a nationwide manhunt is under way after a shooter who one source says was dressed as a delivery person shot and killed a federal judges son and critically wounded her husband nbcs Anne Thompson is outside the familys home in north brunswick. Anne, what in the world happened you know, stephanie, this really is unbelievable especially when you consider that this shooting happened in broad daylight at a federal judges house. It happened early sunday evening. The gunman disguised as a deliveryman walked up to the house behind me. Thats the house that belongs to federal judge efsther salas, shooting her husband and their only child, 20yearold daniel the gunman killed daniel so many questions there are this morning. For example, who was the target of the shooting . Was it the judge was it her husband he was a well respected criminal defense attorney was it the son and most of all, where is the shooter today . In this neighborhood, daniel is remembered as a good kid adored by his parents. A young man who loved baseball who was going to college at Catholic University in washington, d. C. , and a young man who brought food to his neighbors, his moms cooking, when they got hit with a terrible snow storm. For many here it is an incalculable loss. We dont sad to see him go he was a decent kid. Going to be a lawyer like his dad did. His father is a lawyer theyre good people. Im shocked. I wasnt there when this happened i was down the shore but my neighbors heard five or six gunshots happen. And so, stephanie, the neighbors the people in this neighborhood, like so many, are just absolutely shattered by what happened here yesterday evening. Steph . The judges husband, as you said, was also a wellknown criminal defense attorney. What cases were either of them working on you know, i asked one of the neighbors, you know, what kind of criminal defense work did he do white collar what did he specialize in . And she said that he did everything so she didnt know specifically what cases he was working on, but we can tell you that the judge had just recently presided over a lawsuit brought by Deutsche Bank investors that claimed the company failed to monitor highrisk clients properly, including convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and you can bet today federal officials are going over all their cases to see if theres some kind of connection to what they did to what happened at their home yesterday afternoon so many questions that need to be answered anne, thank you. Well continue to cover this story as more details unfold coming up next an unnamed federal agent in unmarked cars have begun rounding up cars in portland, oregon, after rayed e Straight Days of protest later, remembering congressman john lewis someone who served in congress with him for over 24 years joins us on the best way to honor this extraordinary americans legacy. A dramatic showdown playing out right now out west for the 53rd straight day, protesters took to the streets in portland, oregon, after the Trump Administration deployed federal agents as black lives matter protests continue there oregons attorney general, listen to this, is now suing the department of Homeland Security saying those federal agents are violating the constitution by unlawfully detaining and arresting demonstrators without probable cause and new questions this morning after video showing protesters being detained and taken away in unmarked vans. What they want to do is scare us away, the feds. They want us to stop protesting, and its the opposite effect more people came out tonight lets go live for some answers to portland, oregon, where Erin Mclaughlin is standing by. Lets start with this. Who exactly are the protesters, and why now are the feds coming in well, a real crosssection of society has been out protesting. Ordinary people of different political persuasions. There are also some anarchists that have been out for the violence, but again, lots of ordinary people, including beverly barnham, a mother of two, firsttime protester. Shes actually formed a group called the wall of moms. Take a listen to what she had to say. I saw a video of federal agents taking a person from the sidewalk into a minivan. I turned to my husband in bed and i said, when is enough enough when am i allowed to say im going to stand up for these kids, for these people what do your kids think of all of this . The truth they got to see the videos on twitter. They saw their mom being gassed. They saw me running away they saw me vomiting barnham was out protesting again last night wearing yellow. They are also carrying daisies you can see one of the sunflowers here on the security fence outside the federal courthouse this has been a big flash point in all of the violence that barrier did come down last night amidst the clashes between federal agents as well as the protesters i was speaking to another woman, shes a doctor shes joined a group of female physicians that have been out protesting as well she was telling me just how upset she is to see unmarked federal agents out on the streets of portland, especially in the middle of a pandemic. She says she wants to see more federal esources dedicated to the fight
