Those two states have something very serious in common. They are among nearly 24 states where coronavirus cases are going up. And remember, if it was just a result of more testing, the number of positives would be going down. But theyre not. As i said, theyre going up. Its not clear how much of a factor the virus had on saturdays turnout or if it will impact President Trumps strategy going forward. As his National Security adviser, former National Security adviser john bolton said over the weekend, reelection is constantly on President Trumps mind. I didnt see anything where that wasnt the major factor. So a lot of people have complained that he has a short Attention Span. He doesnt focus. I want to say when it comes to reelection, his Attention Span was infinite. Infinite when it comes to reelection. Lets go straight to the white house and geoff bennett. Whats the mood there today . Good morning. I can tell you the mood among some Campaign Staffers we talked to is defeated. Deflated following that trump tulsa rally. President trump himself is described by sources close to the white house as furious over that much smaller than expected crowd, and, look, its easy to understand why. That event was designed as a Campaign Reboot. It was intended to show President Trump in control. The coronavirus in retreat. The country back to normal. It was supposed to show a deep well of support and enthusiasm for him among his base of supporters. But yet, even in ruby red oklahoma, a state that donald trump won by some 36 points back in 2016, he was unable to fill that arena. It was less than onethird full. Thats what the Tulsa Fire Department tells us. And the only reason why the crowd size is a point of contention is because the president , his allies, the campaign spent days leading up to that event hyping it saying there were more than a million ticket registrations online. It was going to be packed to the rafters. Now separate from the turnout, theres this underlying question about the message. Ive talked to republican sources, even republicans who are still bullish on President Trumps chances to win reelection. They say the campaign and the candidate have not really shown a capacity, a willingness to adapt to the shifting Political Landscape both in terms of whats happening with the Coronavirus Crisis and this new racial reckoning. This new national reawaking around social justice and Racial Justice. So it sounds like at least maybe theyre going to acknowledge the Campaign Strategy has to pivot. A lot has changed in the last three years. Yeah, and, look, this wasnt supposed to be this way, right . The prrkesident, his allies alws intended to run on an economic message in 2020. Then the pandemic struck, the economy tanked and the economic message mostly was taken off the table. What youve seen the president do based on his tweets in this rally over the weekend was return to that well of white racial grievance. The same thing that fueled his run and his rise in 2016. At that rally, the president used a racist nickname to refer to the Coronavirus Crisis. He called Racial Justice demonstrators thugs. He attacked thee efforts to tak down the confederate statues. Theres a clear message from the president about what he intends to do and say to revive his reelection bid as we go into these critical months ahead of the november 2020. Thats his clear message. The question will be, is he hearing the message that is coming back to him . Geoff, thank you. We must talk about the fallout from the friday night decision to fire one of the most powerful u. S. Attorneys in america. Geoffrey berman. He headed up the sdny. He had been spearheading multiple investigations into trump allies. He was so upset by his firing that at first, he refused to go. Our own tom winter has been following all the twists and turns. Tom, i want to start by explaining to our audience who this person is. Because were quick to say oh, well, listen, he wouldnt want to keep an obama holdover. This person was never with trump. Thats not the case. Berman was part of trumps transition team. This is his boy. Exactly right, stephanie. This is somebody appointed by Jeff Sessions to take over this office. This wasnt a holdover from the obama administration. This is somebody who i doinadon trump, who is known as a conservative. Who is this person . On its face, its one person running one Prosecutorial Office in the country. Its the most important when it comes to americas National Security. So you and i have talked, if weve talked for hours, weve talked for days about this office, stormy daniels, michael cohen, investigations into Rudy Giulianis associates lev parnas and igor fruman. Those are all important cases but they prosecute some of the most important National Security cases. Im talking about seizing a ship from north korea involved in sanctions. Im talking about arresting somebody who laundered hundreds of millions of dollars for iran, probably helpful for iran who is trying to build a nuclear weapon. Somebody trying to prosecute the president of venezuela or the person who says hes the president of venezuela, Nicolas Maduro for trying to flood america with drugs. This san important case not just for new york, not just for matters close to the president but important case for the rest of the country, stephanie. All those cases sound like important ones, but the way that he was fired almost reminds me of jim comey. The president has the right to get rid of anybody he wants. But its the way he does it that causes so much attention. Yet another friday night firing. Why do it like this . A week ago, most people didnt know who berman was. Thats exactly correct. Youre right. The president has the absolute authority to appoint and fire any u. S. Attorney that he or she feels the need to do. So it is well within his rights to put somebody else into that office. What doesnt make sense here is, one, back to the friday night kind of news dump. Two, the fact that berman said, no, im not resigning and im not leaving. And so bill barr then had to say, according to bill barr, he had to go to the president and have the president fire him. The president says that he is not involved in this at all. So we still have to figure out whats going on with that. It doesnt make any sense because the person replacing him, jay clayton, who runs the s. E. C. , stephanie, you and i have talked about cases brought by this office. How many times have you and i talked about a case led by the s. E. C. Under jay claytons watch that hes brought to bear . The answer is zero. This is somebody not a prosecutor. This is zero. Right. Somebody that doesnt have any litigation experience and according to the reporting of my colleagues Pete Williams and our white house team, this is somebody who approached the president while playing golf and said, essentially, hey, id like to get back to new york, and id like to build out my resume in my litigation experience in that office. Is this really the office that you want to be kind of putting your toes into the water in . It seems improper. It may be only for that reason. And we may think that its not a good reason. But it may not have anything to do with impropriety. It just doesnt make sense. And so its another bad look for bill barr and its another bad look for the president because, of course, this office and Geoffrey Berman was leading investigation into his second personal attorney, rudy giuliani. So it just doesnt make a lot of sense to me, and i think more reporting will be done over the coming days to figure out exactly what happened here. Either way, its either sloppy or its corrupt. It just doesnt make Good Business sense. Except, tom, it makes perfect sense if the reason to get rid of berman, as humiliating and embarrassing it is for bill barr and President Trump if what he was investigating was more humiliating and put his reelection at even greater risk. Then, of course, it makes perfect sense, and were going to rely on you to keep digging in terms of reporting. Joining us now to go broader into this is pulitzer prizewinning White House Bureau chief for the washington post, phil rucker. Lets go back to the rally and the president s point view of right now. What is his case for reelection . Because it cant possibly be the economy is rising for everyone. Yeah, steph, and that speaks to the central problem with the rally on saturday which is that the president didnt really distill a clear case for reelection. The message was muddled. And thats been frustration point for a lot of republican strategists who wish hed have a sharper attack on joe biden and a more precise case for reelection. What hes trying to do, what his advisers want him to do is say look, he helped create this economic boom the three years before covid19, and you can trust him to do it again. Hell rebuild the economy back to where it was and perhaps better. But that gets lost when he does a nearly two hour, or 1hour, 40minute speech airing racial grievances and reenacting what happened on the ramp at west point. Theres a lot of distraction from what should be the core reelection message. Yeah, and what happened on the ramp at west point doesnt necessarily mean much to millions of americans out there just trying to take care of their families. He also seems to be attacking joe biden in the same way that he attacked Hillary Clinton. But is that going to work . Joe biden doesnt have the likability issues and the road blocks that Hillary Clinton does. And those punches dont feel like they land like they once did. They dont. And weve seen that President Trump has really struggled to figure out how to get to joe biden. He calls him Sleepy Joe Biden and tries to make an argument that biden lacks the mental and physical fitness to do the job. On the other hand, he tries to say biden is part of this left wing mob. There are so many discordant attacks on biden and not a clear, concise way the Trump Campaign has come up with yet to frame his democratic opponent the way he did successfully with Hillary Clinton in 2016. But phil, trump rallies dont occupy all trump supporters. We can look at that rally and say look at all these empty seats. But last time, there were a lot of people who voted for him and they didnt go to rallies. They didnt tell pollsters. They didnt even tell people at neighborhood barbecues they were voting for him, but they did. Do we think the president still has that sort of i wouldnt call it the silent majority, but would we say he still has that voting base, or given all thats happened, im looking at you suburban white women, does he still have their vote . Steph, the Poll Research many have done for months now with suggest no. A lot of those voters have started to peel away from the president in particular, suburban women who we saw turn out in large numbers in the 2018 midterm to help democrats take back the house in a lot of those suburban districts. So President Trump is counting on those people coming back to him eventually in the fall and showing up in november even though theyre not registering in the polls. But virtually all of the data we are seeing, including the president s own Republican NationalCommittee Internal data from the spring, suggests he has lost some of those voters and hes at a significant deficit right now to joe biden. Before you go i want to ask, where is this white house on the coronavirus . The president keeps saying this thing is basically over and done with. But we know that the number of cases is rising. He can mislead the American People on things they cant see or touch or feel. But they know of people in their hometown or their family are sick. Youre right. And the number of cases is rising in a lot of states, including oklahoma and including the city of tulsa where he was on saturday. The white house continues to have that Coronavirus Task force, and they meet weekly led by Vice President pence. But theres been virtually no leadership from President Trump on coronavirus in the last few weeks. And weve not seen publicly dr. Fauci or dr. Birx who we used to see every day at those briefings delivering Health Guidance and conveying a sense of urgency to the american public. Now theres a focus from the white house much more on the economy and from the president on his own Reelection Campaign and political themes than there is on the dangers and the threat of a virus that is still out there and still just as contagious as it was a few months ago. Indeed it is. Phil rucker, thank you for joining us this morning. Breaking news overnight. Nascar investigating after the discovery of a noose in Bubba Wallaces garage stall at talladega speedway. Wallace, you remember just a week ago, nascars only black driver. He pushed nascar to ban the Confederate Flag and raced in a black lives matter themed car just days ago. This morning, the president s former National Security adviser john bolton continuing his media tour before his tellall memoir, the room where it happened is set to be released tomorrow. Over the weekend, a federal judge rejected the white houses request to block publication of the book noting that thousands of copies have already been distributed around the globe. In interviews with abc last night and this morning, bolton warned the American People that the election in november is the last guardrail. We can get over one term. Two terms, im more troubled about. The decisions are made in a very scattershot fashion. Especially in the potentially mortal field of National Security policy. This is a danger for the republic. Joining me to discuss, john ganz, former pentagon speechwriter and author of white house warriors. And john hudson, reporter for the washington post. You wrote an oped saying that john bolton is the model of a trump sellout. Explain. What i was arguing in the piece and what i would make clear is what we see last night and what we see in the reports of the book is this is really one mans fight against the president. John bolton is out for vengeance. He quotes wellington as one of the first quotes in the book saying im going to o
