When the president is so detached from the reality of whats going on. Some of the things trump did and does jeopardizes Real National security. How about a little credit check for you. Is it a trump economy or the result of the obama economy . When you hear how great the economys doing right now, lets just remember when this recovery started. I have to say this to president obama and it wasnt him. Oh, goodness, gracious. Game, set, controversy. Serena williams loses in the u. S. Open final. But it was the chair umpires actions that a lot of people say was out of bounds. Because im a woman, youre going to take this away from me . That is not right. We begin with this stark warning, quote, People Better wake up. That caution coming from veteran Journalist Bob Woodward about what is going on inside the white house. The new book fear is set to be released tomorrow. This morning, his interview with my colleagues on the today show. I want to get straight to that brandnew interview with bob woodward whos painting a president ial picture like no other. He spoke just a few minutes ago on the today show defending himself and trying to raise the alarm on just how serious the information in his book truly is. Heres the problem. This has not been treated seriously enough. The things some of the things trump did and does jeopardize the Real National security. This country does some things in the intelligence world which are so important to protect the country. They are astonishing. They are a secret. Theyre called special access programs. They jeopardizes him. Jeopardizes the positions in the economy by dhoings th s thadoin experts say dont do, it doesnt work. Hes got it in his head. When people challenge him, hell say, oh, ive had those ideas for 30 years, youre wrong. Remember, bob woodward, hes not a republican, hes not a democrat, hes a world class journalist. And not wasting any time. Just three minutes after that interview with woodward, thanks for watching, President Trump, he tweeted this. A quote from the reporter from the washington examiner. I am taking this book with a grain of salt and everyone should do the same. Multiple sources, but almost every one of them has come out and discredited the claim also made by woodward. You cannot take this book too seriously. H. R. Woodward directly rebuffed several times during the today interview. Theres a war on truth by him. He says, oh, these are unnamed sources. But these are not unnamed incidents. Specific people on specific dates, theyre not telling the truth. Look, whats going on here, my old boss at the Washington Post ben bradley, the great editor who used to say the truth emerges. Sometimes it takes time. These people, these are political statements to protect their jobs. Totally understandable. But this is as carefully done as you can do an excavation of the reality of what goes on. The white house also dealing with the frenzied fallout over that New York Times blistering oped and the president s attempts to find out the authors identity. Members of the Trump Administration continue to deny any involvement in writing the anonymous piece, including Vice President mike pence, and he says hes confident it was not anyone on his staff. Let me be very clear, im 100 confident that no one on the Vice President s staff was involved in this anonymous editorial. And you asked them . You know, honestly, i dont have to ask them. Because i know them. I know their character. I know their dedication. And i am absolutely confident that no one on the Vice President s staff had anything to do with this. And note, since he didnt ask them, it doesnt make him a liar. Lets go straight to the white house and nbcs geoff bennett. That is not all the president is tweeting about this morning. Walk us through what hes saying about Bob Woodwards book. When president obama was in office, President Trump tweeted out, please, the Obama Administration cant possibly try to go after woodward. Fast forward, that is exactly what President Trump is doing. You got that right, look, the president is dismissing and trying to discredit bob woodward just as he has every other person whos written bookings that purport to capture what happens behind the scenes here at the white house. The takeaway from bobwoodwards book is the president is unprepared, uninformed and unprincipled. You can understand then what accounts this new reaction from the president. He says this, the woodward book is a joke. Just another assault against me, in a barrage of assaults. Many have already come forward to say the quotes by them, like the book, are fiction. Dems cant stand losing. Then he writes this, appearing to quote the today show, it is mostly Anonymous Sources in here, why should anyone trust you. And the president adds, bob woodward is like a liar who is like a democratic operative prior to the midterms. He was caught cold even by nbc. Bob woodward says his reporting process was and is meticulous. He says he has transcripts that are 700 or 800 pages lock just for one person, one interview, stef. But the president and the white house are clearly on the defensive across multiple fronts. Add to that, former president barack obama. All offering up these scathing indictments of President Trump. As for the oped, when you Ask White House officials about it, the reaction is often, you know, why are you so open sesed with this . Its clear the president himself is still obsessed with finding the author. Even though im told hes being counseled by senior staffers to let it pass, to let it go, to really avoid bringing more attention to the claims in the oped. There is no active white house investigation. Even though there has been talk of using Lie Detector Test and sworn affidavits. That is just one indication of how laser focused the president is and finding the person who wrote this oped which raises alarms about his fitness for office, stef. Isnt that stunning . My white house sources say the same thing. The hope is the president will stop talking about the oped and Bob Woodwards book. The person theyre most worried about is their boss. I want to bring my panel in. It is a fantastic one. Democratic congressman from my home state of new jersey Donald Norcross and msnbc contributor, my friend brett stevens. Congressman, unprepared, uninformed and without principle. Weve heard that time and again. Heres the thing. People knew that and voted for the president anyway. Do you think this book, what youve heard about the book, will have any impact . Well, this just reconfirms what weve been hearing literally for years now. And the details a little bit more involved, but the fact of the matter is, you know, my colleagues, privately, i hear them say the guys nuts. But why would we throw him out . Were get everything we ever dreamt of. Now the holy grail, the Supreme Court decision of bringing in kavanaugh. Theyve hit the lottery. So why would they ever throw him out . Theyre getting what they need. To that exact point, bob woodward said People Better wake up. Why would they when from a policy perspective theyre getting what they want. Theyre getting robust Economic Growth that a lot of businessmen love, the deregulation agenda. The heart of the book simply confirms what anyone who has spent any time with donald trump, met him in any sort of setting, should know right away. The sense of the lack of principle. The extraordinary lack of basic information. The inability to reason his way through any argument. Woodward is revealing no secrets. My question is does the book move voters at the margins. And i suspect it is going to move voters at the margins. I suspect it is going to have a decisive effect on the midterms. At the end of the day, youre not going to convince the core trump base that they that they made a mistake. You are going to convince the people who struggled really hard in 2016 between hillary clinton, not liking her, and donald trump, not liking him, and suddenly saying, you know what, this guy, weve been in crazy town for too long. We need a correction. And thats not that many voters. Thats the thing that ought to worry republicans. Theyre talking about maybe 100 or 200,000 voters could create a wave election. Do you think this moves any votes . What i hear all of us saying is it reconfirms and reconfirms. To me, that just says then President Trump could get elected again if he knew all this already. This is where its different. The buyers remorse which is coming in for many middle of the road independents who werent quite sure. Who said lets give the guy a chance and make some things up. Now theyre actually seeing what has happened. The tax scam. Giving 1. 3 trillion away to the top 1 . And telling the average guy that we represent, hey, youre going to get a raise. They didnt get a raise. Theyre just trying to keep their job. What they had just a few years ago has evaporated. Real wages are going down. Thats where the real remorse is coming in. Throw the book on top of it. From somebody who has credibility from day one. And hes got a real problem. I want to share Savannah Guthrie was asking bob woodward if he believes the author of that anonymous New York Times oped could also be one of the sources in his book. Take a listen. No, i didnt. Because the people i talked to, i insisted be very specific about the incidents exactly what happened, and as ive said, i think this is important, the Building Blocks of journalist are specific events, what happened on this day, who said what, and this is a volume of trump talking and acting and deciding. As i understand it, most of your interviews, you recorded. Yes, yes. Woodward sources are in one camp. This oped author is someone in the administration right now. Do you believe that impacts anything going on . Do Mitch Mcconnell and paul ryan start to say this is from someone close to the president . Its like that movie when a stranger calls. The calls coming from inside the house. I dont think frankly, i dont think is surprises anyone. I think that oped was worth publishing because it gives you an insight into thinking that i think typifies many people within the administration. Frankly, i think it broke no secrets. While the president is hunting for the for the source and threatening legal action and polygraph tests, the fact is, any Single Person in the white house could have written it. You were hearing mike pences denials earlier on the show. But mike pence told a wellknown republican operative on the record in march 2016, march or february of 2016, that donald trump must not be allowed to become the republican nominee. Thats almost an exact quote. So it doesnt really in a sense, the identity of the author doesnt really matter because he speaks for so many people inside the white house and the administration. Does this oped do anything . To your point, behind closed doors, privately, republicans are going, oh, my god, hes off the rails, hes crazy. If youre Mitch Mcconnell, do you just turn the news off and stay focused on the agenda . Because Brett Kavanaugh is a grand slam home run for mcconnell. No question about it. Its been for the entire Republican Party. Theres this calculation thats taking place. Youll speak about it very openly in private. Its not if theyre going to do it, its when theyre going to do it. That calculation is coming closer each time. As they start to read the polls. At what point do we jump off this ship and save our own lives . This is the reality of whats going on. That is a wow. Im not quite sure thats a calculation they needed to have reached before the election or at least in the early days of this presidency. They never reached it. I need to ask you about your latest oped. Thoughts for very wealthy political donors. What is your message to them . Because you know very wealthy political donors stop what theyre doing every day at 9 00 a. M. To watch msnbc. Listen, this was written for people whose net worth is 25 million perfect, thats my core dealership. Those people, when you meet them in person, theyre nuanced, theyre thoughtful. Theyre hyper partisan in their giving. And thats a shame. They should be focused on purple state america. They should be focused on governors and senators and politicians who are capable of bringing people together who have changed their mind, who sometimes voted across party lines because the real problem in this country is the rot in our political culture. Thats what Mike Bloomberg does. I know. By the wait,y, i think hes wor more than 25 million. Im sure he is. I represent just the working men and women, but the one thing that we really took to heart during the mccain funeral was his statement about something greater than yourself. And what a noble cause. But what we found out is the president doesnt have anything greater than himself. We didnt find that out. We knew it beforehand. Do you think john mccains legacy, his funeral, the impact it had on everyone sitting there watching it, are people in office thinking about what their message is, what their legacy will be what they did at a time like this . John mccain was such a hero. And to see the president of the United States demean somebody who was captured and a p. O. W. Is just something that is insulting to our country. They just shake their head. How can somebody do that . That along with the book brings everything back to saying how can we let this guy continue. I think change is coming. Well soon find out. Actually, those job numbers are the same as they were in 2015. In 2016. I think hes starting to take some credit. He was trying to take credit for this incredible thing thats happening to our country. And you look at those bad numbers that were there in the last couple of years. It was this way and going in the wrong direction. It wasnt going in the wrong direction. It wasnt this way. It was this way. Youre right, President Trump, it wasnt this way, but it wasnt the wrong direction. You heard it over and over this weekend. President trump and former president obama arguing over who should get credit for the economy. A critical issue for the midterms. So lets look at the numbers. In the 19 months since President Trump took over, the economy has added about 3. 5 million jobs. In the last 19 months of the obama presidency, the economy added nearly 4 million jobs. Another way to look at that would be to compare the average job gains per month. It shows president obama averaging about 208,000 jobs added since july 2015 compared to an average of 188,000 jobs under President Trump. The president also likes to brag that the Unemployment Rate is near its lowest point in decades. Hes right. Please look at this chart. The jobless rate has been dropping steadily for more than nine years. Thats obama territory. That said, there have been big milestones on trumps watch. The markets are near record highs. Wages are starting to rise. And for the first time in at least a generation, there are more open jobs than job seekerings. But how much of that is because of the president s policies . The center for Economic Policy research did a steudy in july ad found when comparing similar economic models, an economy without trump does about the same as an economy with trump. In other words there is no trump effect. I want to bring in austin goals buy, former chairman of the council of economic advisers under president obama. Hes currently the producer at the university of Chicago Booth School of business. He said President Trump did not do much to help the economy. Whats your take . Thats about right. Weve had about 115 months of private sector job growth, and 19 of those were under trump, so what is that, like 15 . I dont see how you come into the game with 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter. Your team is already ahead and youre, like, i won this game. Yes, it hasnt gotten worse. Job growths a little bit slower. But the economys going okay. I think the shame is on us for letting President Trump trumpet only the news on the days its good and then change the subject if the numbers come in not as good. So we had one good quarter of gdp. Last quarter, all of last year, it was mediocre. If the economy was so good, if the jobs picture was so rosy under president obama, where do all those forgotten americans come from that rose up and said i want Something Different who voted for trump . Well, thats theres an implicit theory in that statement and your theory was it was about economics, why donald trump won. I dont subscribe to that theory. I think it was a lot more complicated. There was a lot of racial resentment. There were issues about immigration. And things like that were more important than the jobs were. But, i mean, just look at the numbers. As you just showed, the job creation was actually stronger under president obama. At best, you would say its been a continuation of a steady trend after we avoided a depression. Weve been chugging a long and were now one of the longest booms in u. S. Economic history. Lets talk about Business Confidence. Jeff cox of cnbc wrote this. Business confidence is soaring, in part thanks to a softer regulatory environment. Consumer sentiment by one measure is at its highest level in 18 years. Corporate profits, owed in good parts to last years tax cuts, is getting close to setting records. Each of those accomplishments can be tied either directly to new policies or at least indirectly through a brimming sense of hope from businesses that the white house is back on their side. Now, i speak to ceos all the time. Whether they like trump or not, they will say it is a more business Friendly Administration when president obama was in office. The threat, the regulatory overhang. Not knowing what regulation was going to come down the pike prevented them from reinvesting and hiring. Well, stephanie, i guess my question is, why, then, was job creation faster under president obama. If this regulatory cloud was so detrimental, why was gdp growth in 2017 only 2. 2 . I have no doubt that corporations got a 2 trillion tax cut. Theyre happy about that. You see in their corporate profits. Theyve never had higher corporate profits than they do now. That hasnt translated into faster job growth. That hasnt translated into faster wage growth. And so im glad that they feel good about themselves. But, like many things, like the Unemployment Rate. The Unemployment Rate is getting down to close to record levels. It started Getting Better many years ago. And its continued at around the same rate. And now were at a level thats very low. Okay. Business confidence. Business confidence in january of 2009 in the midst of the financial crisis was rather low. So we had a pretty substantial improvement of Business Confidence and its continued to get better. You make excellent points. Congressman, take me to the blue collar worker. Youre a former electrician yourself, part of a union. I understand why big business is super on the president. Those tax cuts were out of this world. But the argument has been its going to trimle down to workers. Were not seeing that yet in the numbers. Tell me what your voters are telling you. Well, this is the world according to trump. And guess what, hes a great salesman. Absolutely. The trump is going 60 Miles Per Hour when he took over. He jumped in the drivers seat and still going 60. He hasnt crashed it yet but well wait to see what happens. I was just on the job last week talking to men and women. Theyre still waiting for that great tax effect to hit them. It hasnt. You know, saying the job is the most important thing is only half the story. A job that actually pays enough money for you to take care of the family is the true story. So people have job, but it wasnt what they enjoyed. Even a decade ago. You know. If they lost their job in the automobile plant making 30 bucks an our, theyre reemployed today making a fraction of that. The Biggest Issue coming on is Corporate America in general has moved the retirement issue off their platter and back on to the next generation. We have a train coming down the road that are going to devastate our seniors. Steady last week, 1 in 5 have less than 5,000 put away for their retirement. 5,000. But were learning in a world of short termism. Where people arent voting according to that. Theyre not saying we have a longterm problem. Brett, you have all these people who have voted for the president who buy into his im just going to call it extraordinarily showmanship and salesmanship. Hes not actually delivering the numbers. When are they going to start to wake up and say oh, my god, these tax cuts only helped Corporate America, theyre never going to get to me . Im not sure i agree with the premise of your question. Wage growth has been slow but its starting to pick up. Business investment is stronger than its been in a long time. Something that austin was saying, yes, its true that job growth has been slow, because we are getting very close to full employment. Its easier to bring unemployment down from its heights in 2009, 9 , 10 , down to 6 or 7 , then it is once youre reaching full employment. I think democrats have a real problem here. They have to be careful. I remember right after the election, very prominent, democratleaning economists saying the stock market is going to tank. Were going to go into the World Economy is going to collapse. None of that happened. Of course trump is overselling the economy. Of course hes taking credit for things hes not responsible for. But democrats run the risk of being sour about an economy thats actually doing pretty well, all things considered. And if wage growth starts to grow up, then thats going to be a problem on the democratic side when republicans say, hey, you guys were saying that wage growth was never going to happen and now it is. It reminds me a little bit of the way people like bob dole and jack kemp were talking about the economy in the 1990s when bill clinton steam rolled to an election. Im just cautioning democrats to be careful about being the bad news ninis about what is a robust economy moving well past what should have been a sell by date for a new recession. The economys gone but its leaving the little guy behind and thats the difference. Austin, do you want to comment on that . Because as much as we say issues like reproductive rights and immigration matter to voters, if voters have money in their pocket, even a little bit more, and they feel confident, thats how they vote. Yes and no. Look, i think that there is a danger. I thought that was insightful. There is a danger if the democrats are going to say the economy is not good. I think the economys going pretty well. My only point is its not that much better than what it has been. And i think the danger for the republicans, if its going to be about the economy, is they passed a 2 trillion tax cut for big corporations and highincome people. If you remember, they sold that by saying that the average worker was going to get a 4,000 raise. Thats what they said. So people are going around saying wheres my 4,000. So wages might go up a little. I hope they do. But, you know, if they economy is mainly going to deliver for big corporations that already had record levels of profit and for highincome people, who already were doing really well, i think theres a danger for the Republican Party to kind of get themselves out on an island that everybody else is not on. Remember, theres a very big difference between workers getting a onetime bonus and a raise. A raise sticks with you. A bonus, thats just a little kiss. All right, thank you so much. You knew i was going to cover this one. A double standard and abuse of power. Thats how tennis legend and a hero of mineie jean king describes the controversial end to the grand slam over the weekend in the washington oped. A match between Serena Williams and new champion osaka. The umpire called this coaching, which is not allowed. And gave the 23 grand slam champ her first code violation of the game. And warning that williams called unwarranted. If he gives me a thumbs up, hes telling me to come on. We dont have any code and i understand why you may have thought that was coaching. Im telling you its not. I dont cheat to win. Lose. I thought id let you know. It escalated from there. Two other Code Violations followed for serena, one for slamming her racket and other for calling the umpire a thief. It ultimately ended with an apologetic osaka accepting a trophy from her idol and opponent. Mary is a Sports Reporter and megan is the editor and chief of dead spin. I have to go to you first. What is your take on all of this . Serena is carlos ramos is not a sexist, racist, massage nist. I have called 2 billion tennis matches in my career. Hes been in a chair for a lot of them. He is a strict task master of a guy. I have seen him call out for illegal coaching. You dont mess with this guy. Serena was, she just, totally, she lost the plot. She lost the arguments, lost the match and poisoning the atmosphere for this great kid, this 20yearold, naomi osaka. Do you agree . I think theres a double standard. I have called far fewer tennis matches than mary, but video surfacing this weekend of ramos not calling similar penalties against djokovic and murray. Could you cherry pick . Could your cherry pick examples where he didnt call . Yes, absolutely. Part of the issue is, this is in a larger context. Serena williams faced sexism her entire career. Thats not what this was. Shes totally out of line. It absolutely makes her more likely to see it. To see it in a vacuum without talking about her being penalized for other things, you know, she was one of the major factors in introducing video replay because of all the calls going against her. She cant wear the cat suit at the french open that she was wearing for health reasons. She has put up with a double standard her entire career. I think to see this one call in a vacuum without considering that larger context is a mistake. Thats what she is feeling. Dont you have to look at each call in a vacuum . In realtime, in a tennis match, the chair umpires job to think of that player in the broader context of their career . Are they supposed to call them as they see them at that moment . He calls them as he sees them. This guy is a very, very respected chair umpire, stephanie. He has been doing them for decades, big matches for decades. This is not Andy Griffeth let himself in and out of the prison cell. Serena should have known that. She is often beyond her best. At her very worst, as she was on this night, she acts like a bully. You make a career covering bullies. This is what you do for a living. You know what happens. You cannot talk to them or reason with them. You know . And that, to me, is what happened. Serena got fined. They were raining boos on him. Osaka played an unbelievable match. They always happen at the fourth major. Is the end of the year. Theres a lot of milestone things going on. She was trying to time it with 24 majors. This is a big, big deal for her. The tension got to her. The pressure got to her. Im sorry it ended that way. People are pointing fingers at carlos ramos. People are saying he should have gave her a soft warning. You do that at the beginning of the match, not the thick of the match. I was calling a match for a former u. S. Open champion when the second violation happened. She cracked her racket. She said, the next time she will lose a game. If you follow tennis, you know those rules. Thats exactly what happened. The place went nuts. The kid, osaka, i feel nothing but sour for her. The words tears of joy. I love billy jean. She is my hero, my mentor, my great friend. A lot of theeds people who are weighing in saying double standard, this is not the hill you die on. What about the moment when the two women were standing next to each other and the crowd was booing and serena put her arm around naomi and said please top booing. She created that environment. But in that moment. At the end, think about what that was for those two women in sport, extraordinary. I do think, i take issue with the word bully a little bit, particularly because serena was the one who got it back on track afterward. That crowd was out of control, ruining osakas moment. Serena, i dont think she would deny she played a role in that situation. This is her moment. I think that, i wish we had a black woman here. I think one of the elements here is that the emotional labor is always on the woman. Always on the woman of color. That scene was not going to come back under control unless Serena Williams did the work and she stepped up. Osaka is a woman of color. Absolutely. Look at this kid. Everything she ever dreamed of became a nightmare scenario instead. I cannot believe the grace, the elegant way osaka handled this moment. Look at her mom. Come on. For sure. Again, serena is a magnificent champion, a great athlete. People who are pointing the finger at the dude in the chair, to my mind, are really getting this wrong. Here we are, two days later and we have a year to celebrate and congratulate naomi. It was an extraordinary win. Thank you so much. Well be right back.
