Whether its a real video, the threat is real. You got to be kidding me. The british Prime Minister criticizes his tweet. Now the Uk Parliament is debating if the invitation for a state visit should be withdrawn. And refusing to resign. Allegations mounting against congressman john conyers. One of his accusers breaking a nondisclosure agreement to share her story this morning. It was Sexual Harassment, violating, violating my body. We begin this morning with matt lauer responding publicly for the First Time Since he was fired from nbc news following allegations of Sexual Misconduct after more accuse are es come forward. Lawer releasing this statement just a short time ago. Quote, there are no words to express my sorrow and regret for the pain i have caused others by words and actions. To the people i have hurt, i am truly sorry. As i am writing this, i realize the depth of the damage and disappointment i have left behind at home and at nbc. Some of what is being said about me is untrue or mischaracterized, but there is enough truth in these stories to make me feel embarrassed and ashamed. I regret that my shame is now shared by the people i cherish dearly. Repairing the damage will now take a lot of time and soul searching and im committed to beginning that effort. It is now my fulltime job. The last two days have forced me to take a very hard look at my own troubling flaws. Its been humbling. I am blessed to be surrounded by the people i love. I thank them for their patience and grace. This is a lot to take in, especially for those of us here within nbc. I want to get more from nbcs Stephanie Gosk. Hey, stephanie, good morning. In that statement from lawymatt lauer, he expressed his regret. On the heels of multiple new allegations. This morning, the national wreckening over Sexual Harassment in the workplace hit home. Nbc news can report two additional women came forward accusing him of inappropriate sexual behavior, after it was announced he was leaving the today show. A woman told the New York Times anonymously she was sexually assaultled by the anchor in 2001 in his office. Variety magazine published a report based on a twomonth investigation, describing a pattern of alleged Sexual Misconduct by lauer. Three unnamed women telling the magazine lauer sexually harassed them. Their accounts corroborated by friends or colleagues. The magazine also reporting several women say they made complaints to nbc executives, which they allege fell on deaf ears. Late wednesday night, nbc news responded in a statement. We can say unequivocally that prior to monday night, current nbc news management was never made aware of any complaints about matt lauers conduct. This is a sad morning here at today and at nbc news. The announcement came just moments before the today show went live on wednesday. Natalie morales showing support for lauers accuser. It is about the courage, the story today is the courage of a colleague who did come forward. Nbc news fired lauer roughly 24 hours after a female employee made an allegation of inappropriate sexual behavior monday night. The lawyer for the accuser had this to say, in part, i am awed of the courage my client showed to be the first to raise a complaint and to do so without making any demands other than asking the company do the right thing. In a statement, nbc news chairman shared few specifics about the accusation but wrote, it represented, after serious review, a clear violation of our companys standards. While it is the first complaint about his behavior in the over 20 years hes been at innocence news, we were also presented with reason to believe this may not have been an isolated incident. Coming up from sochi nbc confirms the alleged inappropriate behavior began at the 2014 Olympic Games in sochi and continued after that. Lauer was supposed to take part in the Rockefeller Center Tree Lighting last night. And he did not attend. Stephanie. Well, i saw that Tree Lighting and the show went on, it was beautiful. I want to bring in nbc news senior media editor Claire Atkinson along with my panel msnbc political contributor and New York Times oped columnist brandon stevens. And editor megan murphy claire. Your reaction to statement . I thought it was at least good that he broke the apology with savannah. She was the first person to tell the world what matt is saying himself. Second thing is hes talking about the shame that it brought on him and his family and the wider nbc news family. Good that he said that. Interesting to note that, again, in common with a lot of these guys accused of sex harassment, he referred mischaracterizations and some things that are untrue but broadly says, look, this is something i was guilty of, whatever the various allegations are. Well, i mean, listen, these stories, these situations do become a runaway train. Bre brett, i want to share what the New York Times called this, quote, a failure of the network news star system. And they list. The times says its, quote, ripping down the edifice of the Old Television news patriarchy in the process. Is this just the beginning of what were seeing as a completely changing landscape . Because its not unique to news. There are stars across all industries. Yes, well, look, i think one of the things that we learned certainly at fox is when you invest so much money in single human being vehicles, there is tremendous incentive, as we learned from the bill o oreill case, to neglect very credible allegations of misbehavior. In this case, with matt lauer, it seems we didnt have those allegations before, but i think theres something salutary in simply not having these multimillion vehicles for entire networks prosperity. Because that simply creates financial incentives to try to sweep these things under the rug. Now were in kind of a tidal waive moment which is incredibly salutary but if we return to the old system, im not sure that this is going to continue to operate this way. Meg, i want to share what Geraldo Rivera says, with fox, he says, quote, it was sad about lauer, and he tweeted this, the issue is so red hot right now, theres no room for any thought or opinion but hang em high. If the news wasnt formerly a flirty business, then how do we explain so many newsroom courtships that have led to happy marriages . He later tweeted an apology. Now, this issue is red hot. And we do want to make this completely black and white. Does geraldo have any point in there . Because we know that sexual relationships do happen in the workplace, but theres a huge difference between sexual riches, especially with peers or colleagues, and when youre a giant super star and subordinates. Flirtation is not harassment, its not assault, its not the kind of behavior were hearing about, not only with matt lauer but with the number of other people. All of the allegations that presented in the cases were talking about, the most highprofile cases, are my heart goes out to the courage of the women who have come forward. These are very serious, not flirtation. On the second point, what youre talking about, matt lauer is a business. He is not an anchor. He is a multi a hundred Million Dollar business for nbc. Thats how we need to think of it. Thats why this behavior has been enabled, cultivated, in some places, overlooked. Is this a reckoning . Absolutely. Does it occur in every industry . Yes. But our business is very much about the cult of celebrity and sadly has become more so in recent years. Decline of local news. Decline of funding for the kind of journalism that we all here want to be doing, want to be continuing to doing. That funding has decreased. Networks have had to pump their money behind stars to draw rating, to draw advertising, to keep this business going. It is a culture that has become toxic in some respects. We have to learn these lessons and address culture as well. With the growth of social media, these stars have become bigger stars. They have become more powerful than their networks. And the networks are beholden to them. There was a New York Times oped published online today that makes a very interesting point. One of the things thats happened is that as the character issue has been removed from the public side of life, as we have donald trump as president , so many allegations against members of congress that arent meeting with the kind of swift the swift justice we have, we have in lawers case, i think what youre seeing is a kind of remoralization of the life of private corporations. You know, it used to be in the 1950s, Ike Eisenhower was president and you had mad men behavior in ad agencies. Theres been a kind of it seems like its switching. I think thats actually very, very healthy. People are looking at whats happening in washington, saying we dont want that culture at least heres the thing, washingtons the one place repprep repper cushions are not happening yet. I remember sitting at a table with megan murphy when we saw the access Hollywood Tape and President Trump himself said when youre a star you can do it. My heart sank thinking the floodgates have opened. My god, the things that have going to happen. And now its been the reverse. Society, Corporate America has said no, were not going to stand for this. But why is it look at the numbers. Theres a new nbc News Survey Monkey poll out there. 37 of women say Sexual Harassment happens in most workplaces. 25 of men say it. Yet all of us do our Sexual Harassment training on our Online System at the end of the year. Wheres the disconnect . I dont know but obviously the workplace is a place where people do get together. I think a lot of men are asking themselves questions about whats appropriate, what isnt. I talked to Andrew Tindle who is a new tv news analyst and he told me and yantidotes about psychiatrists seeing a flood of men saying, i did this, i did that, is this going to get me fired. I think men are asking themselves whats the correct behavior. The surt have the surveys pretty interesting. Another thing it points out is i think republicans theres a difference between republicans and democrats. In terms of how they view sex harassment in the workplace. And whats acceptable and what isnt. But when we make this argument that, you know, people get together in the workplace. I married a guy i worked with. We were both 25 years old. Once you are an icon, a giant star in a company and youre getting paid the big bucks, if you need to get a piece, get it outside of work withcan we do something to s this narrative. Can we stop focusing so much on the behavior of the men and the misbehavior of the men and start celebrating women as well, not only the women who have come forward but the women in this business and so many other businesses that have fought through this kind of behavior. Remember, its not just about the harassment and or serious allegations of assault. Its about limiting women from Going Forward more generally, creating an atmosphere where women dont think they can move up. Guess what, there are so many who have. Imagine where we would be if we hadnt had this to deal with, this kind of stuff as well. Lets shift this narrative. Women are not all victims and should be perceived that way. Theyre also working incredibly hard to achieve, to go out and continue to make themselves their workplace and their future for themselves as well. Were not talking about that enough. Thats why this superstar is the editor. Were going to leave it there. Up next, President Trump receiving worldwide criticism for retweeting antimuslim videos. I need someone at this table to explain to me why on earth he would do that. Now the British Parliament debating if the offer of a state visit should be rescinded. Last night, the iconic Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree was illuminated. New york city mayor bill de blasio was on hand to help push the button to light it up for the 85th time. I was there. Let me tell you, it was extraordinary. Tonight was the Rockefeller Center christmas Tree Lighting. Some people said, but its still november. Then america was like we need this something good anything good we need it [ cheers and applause ] there was an old woman who lived in a shoe. This is the president of the United States, sharing with millions inflammatory and divisive content. By sharing it, he is either a racist, incompetent or unthinking or all three. We cannot simply roll out a red carpet and give a platform for the president of the United States to also sow discord in our communities. For what does he actually need to see a tweet before the idea of a state visit is ditched once and for all. Can you believe that . This is actually happening today. Those were members of the British Parliament. A country that is supposed to be americas closest ally. And what are they doing . Calling on the Prime Minister to pull the plug on a planned state visit by President Trump. This is extraordinary. Its crushing. It comes after the president , the president of the United States, retweeted three antimuslim videos, all of them originally put out by a woman named jada francen of the fringe nationalist Group Britain first. We should make the point that one of those videos has been deemed fake by the dutch government. The other two lack context regarding the circumstances where they were shot and when they were shot. British Prime Minister theresa may criticized the tweets yesterday and did it again this morning. Watch this. The fact that we Work Together does not mean were afraid to say when we think the United States have got it wrong. And to be very clear with them. And im very clear that retweeting from britain first was the wrong thing to do. Why is this even happening. So far, her office says trumps planned visit next year is on despite lawmakers and even the mayor of london saying trump would not be welcome. The initial response from the white house that the president has Great Respect for theresa may and british people but hours later the president seemed to undercut that message, tweeting, quote, dont focus on me, focus on the destructive radical islamic terrorism that is taking place within the united kingdom. We are doing just fine. Namistay. I want to bring in nbcs jeff bennett live at the white house. Jeff, what in the world is happening . Well, you know, White House Press secretary Sarah Huckabee sanders is defending the president saying it doesnt matter if those antimuslim videos are real and shes dismissing the extraordinary criticism raining in from all sides of the political spectrum. Sayingth president was simply trying to show the threat posed by extremism is real. Take a look at the explanation she gave reporters. Whether its a real video, the threat is real. And that is what the president is talking about. Thats what the president is focused on, is dealing with those real threats. And those are real no matter how you look at it. So does it matter if the look, im not talking about the nature of the video. The threat is real and thats what the president is talking about. Now, you mentioned the rebuke from british Prime Minister theresa may. Theresa may has really tried to cultivate a close relationship with President Trump. She extended that state visit to him some months ago. We understand that
