Nevada. As for paddock himself, nbc learned that he spent tens of thousands of dollars gambling in vegas over the last few weeks but it is not clear if he was winning or losing. Paddocks brother says he was not particularly religious or political. President trump talked about the shooting just a few minutes ago. We have a tragedy. Were going to do and what happened in las vegas is in many way as miracle. The Police Department has done such an incredible job and well be talking about gun laws as time goes by. He was a sick man, a demented man, a lot of problems. Were looking into him very very seriously. But were dealing with a very very sick individual. We got a great team here to help us break it down this morning. Lets start with nbcs steve patterson. Hes live here in las vegas. Whats the mood in the city been . Its been just over 36 hours. Reporter its still eerie. You get the since that vegas will never be the same. Over my right shoulder there is the shooting scene. Back mind he over my left sho d should shoulder, the mandalay bay where the shooter was perched on the 32nd floor firing down at the people below. Last night the strip was mostly dark. It went dark along with several landmarks across the country. While there were many vigil going on throughout the city, there was one that featured a local church where they range the bell 59 times for each one of the now identified victims of that shooting. People who were at that venue while the shooting were taking place were there, tears were in their eyes, moments of silence. It was a very mournful and respectful ser many any as well as private ceremonies up and down here in vegas. Now obviously the focus is on the investigation. It must be frustrating for the investigators because they keep going into this properties where paddock was in his home, not only here in vegas at the hotel room but they keep trying to find a motive, talking to friends and family, here conducting the investigation in the hotel room but all they keep pulling out is more weapons. 23 in the hotel room, 19 at his home. More explosive materials in a car nearby. By yet talking to friends and family, everybody says hes a standup guy and theres no motive given. Thats the work thats being done here from investigators. Crews 12 hours later were still removing the dead from the scene. Now were on to the hard part. That will take a long time. The meticulous heartbreaking task of identifying those bodies if are the families so they can have some closure. Thats where we are right now. But the atmosphere here is eerie. Just walking up and down here this morning, you always expect to see signs of, you know, this is the vegas strip, always popping here, always lights on. But obviously now there is a sense of a somber tone that you cant shake off when youre here now. This does not feel like sin city. When we came into town its sad city. We got in last night but not later than you would normally see a very active strip. It was quiet. Right behind us you can see the Mandalay Hotel back there. Thats the hotel that steve is talking about the concert in the area behind us. You see no traffic here. What you cant see is there are police cars everywhere, still moving, still trying to get a handle on what they need to do to understand this better. On the electronic billboards that yes see flashing promotions for people to come into the casinos, now phone collections, phone numbers being offered for those looking for friends and family. Very different. Youre seeing the las vegas come together, other resorts like the Golden Nugget offering free meals to first donations. This is a city, a family, a community. We want to bring in Pete Williams. Pete has been looking into this closely. Pete, the struggle here is to determine why, why meaning a motive. Are we any closer on getting some insight into that . Not as far as we can tell. Theyve found nothing to indicate why he went to the hotel to dairy out mar carry ou. Theyve searched his house but it didnt turn up social media posts or anything else to indicate that he planned the attack. They found more guns in the house. He owned more than 40 weapons in all. They found 23 in his hotel room at the mandalay bay, 19 more at the house. They also found at his home in mesqui mesquite. Several gun stars in the region said he bought hand guns and rifles from them over the past several months but they say those sales were legal. His live. In girlfriend was out of the country when the shooting took place, on a trip to asia but they want to talk to her to see if she had any idea what he was up to or if she helped him prepare for it. In terms of the question of how was he able to get the weapons to fire so rapidly like automatic weapons. We now know when he went to the gun stores, he bought two devices known as bump stocks. And then from once you pull on the trigger from then on, the recoil of the rifle itself causes the trigger to keep pulling. You dont have to manually pull the trigger. The gun in essence pulls its own trigger because of the recoil of the weapon. And its believed that that is at least one of the ways that he got these 23 or some of these 23 guns youre looking at a search of the room last night. Some of how he got these some of these 23 assault type rifles that he had in the room to fire in such a rapid fashion. Now he also had a couple of sniper rifles that have legs that come out of the front of the rifle for steadying them. They found those in the room as well. So he had a true arsenal of weapons in that hotel room, including high capacity magazines. But thats the how he did it. The why, to answer your question, ali, is still illusive. Yeah. Its so strange. This far after an event not to have more clues as to why. I know you and other members of the team are working on it. Pete williams thank you for that. This bump shots, what is the rationale behind why theyre even available . We talk about how you cant buy a machine gun in america if youre not Law Enforcement or military. But this essentially makes it into one. We can stop calling it a machine gun. We havent been doing that but its the idea that you press the trigger once and thats the bump stock and it uses the recoil of the gun to cause the next shot to happen. Whats the argument for why the common person should be able to purchase this . Thats a good question. There are arguments why there should be higher capacity magazin magazines, why there should be stronger guns and a lot of it comes from hunting. But nobody hunts with a fully automatic weapon. This is what i dont understand. This is part of the discussion that we need to have. Some people say its not time to have that discussion. But why do we have these things. This isnt a Second Amendment right. This is darcht conversation. Why are military style weapons and theres a lot of confusion in the media about assault weapons. But a fully automatic gun which is like a machine gun i think most people can say why do people need that. But asking the question at a time like this isnt demanding that laws be changed. Were in it. Lets talk about it. Its okay following mass sieve storms 0 to say lets talk about climate change. When theres an attack like this, you can say hunters arent using these kinds of machines. Lets turn to miguel. Hes got the latest on the wounded and those trying to help them. What do we know . Reporter 27 people injured, 59 dead, so many of the critical wounded were brought to Trauma Centers like umc behind me. 12 people remain in critical condition, at least 50 other people have surgeries ahead. Many people are not out of the wood. Obviously some of the most serious wounds were gunshot wounds but many people for trampled in the stampede to escape. 104 people hospitalized as of yesterday. Many slowly being discharged. But those with serious injuries could spend days, weeks, mo possibly month nbc the hospital. Families have been pouring in here all day long. Blood zrooidrive have been incry successful. The Authorities Say they dont need more blood right now. Thats how many people have donated blood. That as so many people here are still fighting for their lives, guys. Miguel, thanks very much. The discussion around here is that the response, that call for blood has been so huge that the assistant sheriff said last night in his last press conference of the night, hold off for another day of so. These are the beautiful things weve seen in harvey, maria, irma and now this. The worst brings out the best. Look for the helpers. There are lots of helpers. Tracy was in the concert crowd when the shooting began. This is hard for you. Last time you were here you were running in this direction. Running away from it. Tell us what you did and what you did. I was to the left of the stage when it happened. And there was little bar areas that we ducked behind and literally watched the whole thing. It seemed like fire works going off. You didnt know it was feel until i saw people running out with blood. And there was people behind me, almost protecting them saying okay, were going to be okay. When we felt safe, when we felt the gun shots stopped, thats when we exited. And it didnt get real until we came down the street and there were bodies. How did you know where to run . You just got away as fast as you could. We got into the parking lot here and there were people laying under cars trying to stay safe. When did you see the First Responders . Immediately. I mean there were people helping. Everyone was there and helping. I walked as fast as i could to get away. You didnt know, did they catch him, did they not. At some point did you have an idea how did you know you were running to safety. It sounded like there were echos. Nobody knew what was happening i didnt feel safe until i was in my ho fell room, to be quite honest. Could you tell where the gun shots were coming from in. No. It sounded like fire works were coming from behind the stage. There was a gentleman by me and he said, i think its fireworks. And then when we saw people with blood coming out, we knew we had to go. Where are you from . Minneapolis. Are you ready to go home . Yeah, im ready to hug my babies. How do you get better from this. Thank every day youre alive, friends and family. Im one of the lucky ones, 100 one of the lucky ones. When you made your way out were you able to stay with your group . Who were you running with . Who was guiding you . There was a few of us here who stuck together. You didnt lose your group. You made your way away from here. What was it like around you. There must have been thousands 0 of people trying to figure it out. Everyone was crying and scared, where do you go . Any popping sound you heard, you ducked. When you were in the streets here you said you saw bodies. How were people getting themselves out of here. How did they get themselves to medical centers . I have no idea. Like people were coming to them and helping them get there. I mean when you walk down the street you could see drops of blood. Like you could see blood on the street. And this, just tell us again, this is where the concert was behind the palm trees. You can see route 91 on the top of that venue. Just to the left of it. Theres the stage. So you managed to get out to the street and you ran right toward us . Yeah, right towards you. You sort of ran through right through this area. And you made it to safety. How long did all of it take in. Dont know. I have no sense of time. I looked back at my phone and sent a message to my friends who knew i was here saying i was okay. Looking back it was 10 15. I dont know where i sent it. I dont know if it was ducking in or if i was out in this area. 10 08 is when the first call went in. That must have been tragic, those eight minutes or so must have felt endless. Yeah. It didnt know what was happening. After this life changing experience, whats your message . Hug the ones that you love, tell them you love them every day is a gift right now. Tracy, stay safe. Thank you. Were glad youre with us. That was a tough thank you so much. Thank you. Were going to take a break but when we come back were going to talk to the mayor of las vegas, Carolyn Goodman will join us on how this city can start to recover. Patrick woke up with a sore back. But hes got work to do. So he took aleve this morning. If hed taken tylenol, hed be stopping for more pills right now. Only aleve has the strength to stop tough pain for up to 12 hours with just one pill. Tylenol cant do that. Aleve. All day strong. All day long. Check this sundays paper for extra savings on products from aleve. Can i get some help. Watch his head. Im so happy. Whatever they went through, they went through together. Welcome guys. Life well planned. See what a Raymond JamesFinancial Advisor can do for you. Welcome back to msnbcs breaking news conch of the deadliest mass shooting in modern u. S. History t. Were live in las vegas. Im ali velshi. And im stephanie ruhle. Joining us is the mayor of las vegas, Carolyn Goodman. Our deadest condolences go out to you and your city. How with you doing this morning. You have to still be in shock. Weve had such response from around the country and even from around the world, certainly in our community, the outpouring of how can i help, this tragedy. And our concentration, were leaving it to Law Enforcement and the legal as spepects to investigate who this individual was. Were all about the vems and how all of these people who have brown stricken down by the gun fire and were attending a wonder ful event could have such a horrible outcome. Our concentration is to honor the 59 individuals and pray for those still in surgery, still undergoes change in their lives and then for all of the relatives. But most porimportantly its ab how we can reflect on how to be a better person, what can we be doing with our lives instead of looking at somebody es and complimenting the good things that happened in the world and honoring these innocent 59 people. Its just been a tragic time for us. But we appreciate the love and atext tha affection thats coming in from everywhere. And were so grateful to our Law Enforcement and first spoond responders, the medical staff and the outpouring from every aspect of our community. Mayor, the way it goes in instances like this, theres a perpetrator and were trying to figure out their motivation to understand it, to try to prevent anytime the future. But really what we would love to all be doing is concentrating on those 59 innocent victims as as you said and the hundreds of thousands who have their friends and family or touch by this. Have you had a chance to have conversations with the family members of those who died . You know, at this point, yes, i have, with some of those families. But the reality is what we eesh trying to do make sure were spreading the word about what people can do individually to make sure that it doesnt reoccur, that nothing happens and not to glorify the deranged people that take it upon themselves to kill and mutilate and do these horrible things. Is not about them. So to s and it really is about concentrating that on whats occurring and not the one or two people that are so deranged and so awful and so hideous and let the process take care of them. But dont glorify them. Theyre all ill. These are people that really have had something occur in their lives. And we dont care. Theyre dead and thats where they belong. But in my opinion and for all of us who love this community and our country, this is about honoring those 59 innocent people who came out for a wonderful weekend. Country western music. How innocent could that be. And of course we were prepared because you know everyone who comes to one of these activities has a badge and a wristband. And so our Law Enforcement was already there in crowd control. And as this occurrence took place, Law Enforcement immediately went into the crowd to help control, guide people as to how to get out of that event area. And so for those who were in there and having spoken to so many in the hospitals that were not seriously wounded but definitely were wounded, they didnt know, if it hadnt been part of the program or if it hadnt been fireworks that were going off as part of it. And they really didnt have a sense of where the noise was coming from or what it was. But after just that short amount of time and word spreading, then you can see in the video the movement. And while i have heard the word stampede, it didnt do that. It was a crowd that was moving in the right direction and people were helping people. There are so many heros. But you know, i concentrate on these 59 innocent lives. Mayor, beyond thoughts and prayers, people need help and protection. Thank you so much for leading this city during such a tragic time. Mayor Carolyn Goodman here in las vegas. Take a look as the sun is risi rising shining on the mandalay bay. You can see the stage and the palm trees. Thats where everybody was and this is the way they ran. They ran everywhere but many ran down here. Were in front of a parking lot. They were getting under cars. They didnt know which way to go. They were tripping over friends. That frenzy and fear in your mind when you dont know whats happening and youre seeing people drop around you. Its tough to see but right behind me over my left shoulder, you can see up, thats where the 32nd floor is and you can see those two corner windows that Stephen Paddock blew out and opened fire on 22,000 people who were essentially penned in. You hear the gun shots but in the dark of night you have no idea where theyre coming from. Coming up next were getting disturbing details about the guns that the las vegas shooter had in his possession. Were going to get the latest details including how he was able to fire so many rounds so quickly. In a time of darkness, mr. Rogers used to say look for the helpers for all of the bad early monday in vegas, the good responded tenfold from the countless stories of people pulling strangers to safety to this, hundreds of people lining up to give blood, looking to help the recovery in any way that they can in the worst of situations. There are always people doing good and theyre the ones we need to remember. We need to honor. This is a time of humanity and it is a gift that so many are coming together. To most people, i look like most people. But on the inside, i feel chronic, widespread pain. Fibromyalgia may be invisible to others, but my pain is real. Fibromyalgia is thought to be caused by overactive nerves. Lyrica is believed to calm these nerves. Im glad my doctor prescribed lyrica. For some, lyrica delivers effective relief for moderate to even severe fibromyalgia pain. And improves function. Lyrica may cause serious allergic reactions, suicidal thoughts
