Shoot at us. If they do that, then its game on. Hes back. Were going to begin with
President Trump
working out of his home, trump tower, where he got a very rude reception from protesters who are angry over his response or lack of response to the hatefueled violence that took place in virginia. So how is the big question, does the president get his agenda back on track . Tiff best team here to break it down. Nbcs
Kristen Welker
live at trump tower. Kristen,
President Trump
, or his team, im going to say, want to turn the page and they want to get him back to his agenda, yet when i look at the president s actions, his tweets, his responses, i dont see his agenda anywhere. Reporter right. His tweets could very well be overshadowing his agenda, steph. Just to walk you through a few of his tweets this morning, the president retweeted an image of a train crashing into a cnn logo with a person actually getting smashed in the middle of it. Now, important to point out that he deleted that tweet ultimately, also retweeted another tweet from a farright conspiracy theorist. These are the types of things that could potentially get in the way of, create more controversy for him, and make it tough for him to pass his agenda. He is going to try to put the focus on his agenda today, steph. Hes holding an infrastructure event here at trump tower later this afternoon. Lets take a look at what his agenda actually entails, what he has to do in the fall. Hes got to fund the government. Hes got to pass the national defense,000 act, and he has to raise the debt limit. You remember how big that fight was back in 2011 so, that could be a tough one. His wish list, what he wants to get done, of course health care reform. Hes tried and failed with that a number of times. Tax reform. And then of course infrastructure. By the way, infrastructure is one policy item where he could potentially find some real
Common Ground
with democrats. So look for that to be a key focus moving forward. But, look, the fallout continues in the wake of what a lot of people saw as an adequate response to the charlottesville clashes over the weekend, the president s going to initially denounce the white supremacist groups behind all of that. And overnight, more ceos said they were backing out of this
Manufacturing Council
in addition to merck who pulled out yesterday morning, steph, which we reported on this show yesterday, you had under armours ceo as well as intels ceo late last night saying theyre out. So very realworld consequences for the president who said hes all about jobs, losing the support of three big manufacturers. Steph . Pretty extraordinary. I want to bring my panel in. A great one this morning. A fresh new hair cut im going to say the an excellent one, ashley parker, msnbc contributor,
White House Reporter
for the washington post, and matt welsh, doesnt have a great haircut but still looks really good today, and editor at large for libertarian magazine. Ashley, im a business girl. Start with the ceos. Three ceos this quitting the council and the head of the aflcio, the
Manufacturing Union
, saying this council is ine fk chul anyway. The president and ivanka to tweet these picture, bring these ceos in. Nothing has actually happened with them. What is the significance of them distancing themselves from the president now . Youre right the councils are more sort of photoops, the ceos get summon todd washington, jared and ivanka like it, but theyre not holding a ton of meetings and working on a lot of big projects. I think you cant understate the significance of them meeting because it shows that some of these ceos, just like many house members and members of congress, they no longer fear the president and are willing to stand up to him and leave. A negative tweet by
President Trump
doesnt nuclear weaponsly mean what it would have or what they might have feared two or three months ago. What does it say that
President Trump
immediately tweeted about the merck crowe k ceo yesterday but has been pretty quiet since . Is he realizing what a big blow this is . When he got up and sort of restated, made a new statement, it almost seemed like when my kids apologize, like, sorry, and suddenly hes silent. It was a hostage video, lets be honest. He got attacked not just by the evil
Fake News Liberal Media
but by a whole bunch of sitting
Republican Office
holders in the senate, various governors and ceos, his home baoys, hi people. He likes generals and
Business People
around him. It hurts to some degree. I dont know if he has the selfawarness to see this as a problem. Hes looking at this from a defensive crouch. Offensively, in a lot of different ways, hes out there tweeting about how hes thinking about or people are reporting hes thinking about hardening sheriff joe arpaio, a hero to the type of people protesting in charlottesville, retweeting others. I dont see a lot of evidence that he thinks his own behavior is a problem. Those retweets are sort of the listen, guys, wink, wink, i still love you, they made me do it. The voice of reason came from a surprising place last night. Anthony scaramucci was on colbert, and we know him from weeks ago, was no fan of steve bannon, but he really talked some reason last night. Take a look. If he wants his legislative agenda to pass, hes got to move in a more moderate direction, hes got to appeal to people that are independents and moderates that possibly voted for him to ascend to the presidency. The mooch is on to something. Yes, the president is here. Theres an infrastructure meeting. His agenda, his schedule is the right schedule. But do we believe that the president is actually trying to get back to that agenda . I dont see any of that in his words or his actions. I think thats the reason he came out yesterday and finally made that statement condemning the violence over the weekend was because he sort of realized he was doing something on trade policy that hes believed for years that was a
Campaign Promise
that is very popular not just with his base in the rust belt but some in silicon valley, and he was going to come out and have all of that overshadowed by the fact he went through this very basic thing, which is condemn neonazis, white supremacists, and the kkk. Even when he did, it was a bit too little too late and it didnt matter. Hes trying to get on track but this is a president who always derails himself with his tweets, his behavior, the people he surrounds himself with, so im skeptical theyll knock all those things out. In terms of getting on track, he likes signing executive orders but if youre going to get to infrastructure, to tax reform, that takes a massive amount of work. Glen thrush reported it last month. I spoke to people from the white house last week that said infrastructure . The president hasnt done anything on it. We need to distinguish between trumps legislative agenda and his regulatory or strich aj administrative agenda, which is vast and hes doing a lot of work there. From a deregulation standpoint. The fda is being modernized in a way that will be help to feel a lot of people. But there is no legislative agenda. He doesnt have people working on this. Obamacare repeal, whatever, the revamp, he didnt ever evince any understanding of what was in the bill at any given time. People are not doing the work on infrastructure on tax reform in particular pap little bit of work on ift. So he doesnt have any kind of setup with a legislative authorities. Hes just bashing
Mitch Mcconnell
and thinking he can get a deal done. Hes basically doing the pen and the phone that conservatives were criticizing obama for in his second term. Well look back at the first term of trump and say thats what he was doing from the getgo, only signing things, he wasnt getting things done legislatively. Theres a lot of news out there and i talk to people in the white house who say steve bannon, on the way out, hes leaving. Is that
Wishful Thinking
. Hes front and center and if people in the white house might not like him, if you look at the things the president has done in the last week, theyre smack dab altright central. Exactly right. Fe first of a first of all weather this white house youre never out until youre out and then its a bit like hotel kroo kra. I will say talking to people in the white house, steve bannon allies, they say this feels grim for him, its a bad moment, the death watch feels real. But they say i could see him gone by the end of the week, see him here in two months and we of soon this before. The argue tomt keep steve bannon in two weeks ago was we dont like him here, but hes more dangerous on the outside and i turn to breitbart and the headline, getting rid of bannon would be the strongest signal to his voters that trump has sold them out. Stephen bannon didnt just need to be at breitbart . Would he really distance himself . He also importantly shares a lot of world view, thats consistent with steve bannon, which is kind of new in the white house. This sense that globalists are conspireing with third world nasties to kind of undermine our sense of
National Sovereignty
and
National Identity
in there. This also resonates with people not i would say the hardcore racist we see in charlottesville but a broader part of the republican right or the right in general that believes that there is some kind of conspiracy afoot among the
International Bankers
and things like that. Make
America Great
mindset. Speeches about this. He believes that. If he got rid of steve bannon hes cutting off his own arm because those
Belief Systems
definitely have overlap. The third world nasties. As matt likes to put it. I want to turn to virginia, though. James fields had his first day in court yesterday. You know who he is by now, the man accused of hitting and killing an antihate demonstrator over the weekend. Nbcs
Mira Rodriguez
is live in charlottesville. Maya, this was the first step. Who is this guy . Reporter thats right. This was the first step when it comes to all of the
Legal Proceedings
that are to come. As we know, the judge denied him bond and fields did not have an attorney. The judge had to assign a local lawyer to him because the
Public Defenders Office
in town said someone in their office had been injured during the protest on saturday, which is why the judge had to assign a local attorney to him. We are learning more about fields past. This is coming to us from a
Florence Police
department in kentucky where he used to live with his mother. This information is based on 911 calls that his mother made when they lived there, allegations of domestic violence. This is when he was 13 and 14 years old back in 2010 and 2011. Several incidents where he allegedly threatened his moth we are a knife, locked her in a bathroom, hit her over the head with her cell phone because she did not want him playing video games. We should point out these were allegations and no charges were ever filed and at this point it does not look like fields had a previous criminal record. Stephanie . Wow. Sounds like a nice guy. I want to bring in in addition to our panel the reverend
Mark Thompson
along with my panel still here. Mark, multiple articles out today with
White Nationalist
s saying charlottesville was just the start of a larger movement. Do we believe that . Are they going to make food on this threat . In fact, there are plans for them to do something in boston over the weekend. To so i think there will be other demonstrations. Trump cam pin. Even when he said yesterday what he said on saturday. Also its a bit hollow because as long as he has the likes of steve bannon and sebastian gor kin in the white house, theyll continue to feel emboldened. Blame steve bannon. The president himself this morning is retweeting tweets from altright leaders. Why do we keep pointing the finger saying its got to be bannon . This is
President Trump
s action. Hes his own man. He feels like he owes bannon. Bannon helped make him. He was a regular on his radio show. Obviously he feels as if he owes him some allegiance. Let me just say this quickly, though. He always confronts people who confront him. Notice when david duke confronted him, he was silent. David duke punked donald trump. He called him out on saturday saying were in your corner, you wouldnt be here without us, and trump didnt even respond. That is extraordinary. Not just david duke but apparently other leaders of the movement think donald trump is on their side. I want to share what one nationalist leader, richard spencer, said, quote, he doesnt believe trump was making his statement sincerely and doesnt believe the president has condemned the movement, pointing out that trump didnt use the term
White Nationalist
s yesterday, a piece from politico. What do you make of that . I think when the president takes 48 hours so do what is sort of a basic reflx for any other leader zmoosh as opposed to the 30 seconds it took him go after the ceo of sneshg. Merck the. This is one who knows how to call people thugs and losers, again, i dont know if you want to call it a dog whistle, a very clear message, his heart is not in this. That was the statement we saw yesterday. He read from a teleprompter, clearly did it under duress after being sort of urged by aides to do it. It sends a clear message. Mark murray put out a question this morning, what speaks louder, trumps tweets or his teleprompter reads . I think we just answered the question. Tweets. In terms of free speech, you said this movement will continue. They want to g to boston. Youve heard from the mayor of boston, he doesnt want the
White Nationalist
movement there. We know texas a m canceled an event. Where does free speech collide with hate speech . There is no such thing as hate speech constitutionally in the
United States
. Its something we always trip on, but as a jurisprudence matter wow, the libertarian just showed up. The question is what do you d with the security angle . A lot of the campus protests, canceling milo, whatever, at berkeley, saying we cant guarantee his security and it felt like youre subsuming to the hecklers veto here. Now were seeing violence. Look at the screen right here. People are going there trying to beat the snot out of each other. Not just at berkeley but anaheim and other places. The question is what are kochs and mayors prepared to d when these people get together . Thats hard to one answer, you use the word snot and youve spoken french. You get credit for that. In reality, though, in terms of free speech, which were all advocates of, where does hate speech have a home . Well, i think you have to be concerned, obviously,
First Amendment
rights, but when it is a threat to public safety, thats where which it clearly was. And thats where
Law Enforcement
has to km in and be careful. We see in other situations and i lived in washington, d. C. , for 250 years, the klan march there from time to time. Obviously the police would put the ku klux klan in one area and countdemonstrators in another. There would even be some separation. The counterdemonstrators have a
First Amendment
right as well. To avoid violence, i think thats what
Law Enforcement
is going to have to d. But in cities, obviously, like boston, where theyre very afraid that its going to descend into violence, i think they do have the right to say, well, you know, we had to d this another way and its unsafe for the environment for you all to eve havent this demonstration here. I think cities that feel that way should not allow these types of demonstrations to happen. These are scary times but we will not be scared. Thank you so much. Twoef take a break. Next, comments from kim jongun looking over military options. Did the
Supreme Leader
blink over his threats to attack guam . And before we go, usually we play a fun clip from late night. But there was no fun last night. The comedians took an opportunity to take the comedy mask off and address the violence in charlottesville the way some leaders couldnt seem to d. We all need to stand against what is wrong, acknowledge that racism exists, and stand up for what is right and civil and kind. And to show the next generation that we havent forgotten how hard people have fought for human rirgts. Their experience is coveted. Their leadership is instinctive. Theyre experts in things you havent heard of researchers of technologies that one day, you will. Some call them the best of the best. Some call them veterans. We call them our team. Anyone who calls it a hobby doesnt understand. We know that a persons passion is what drives them. [ clapping ] and thats why every memorial we create is a true reflection of the individual. At the same time, north korea releasing these new pictures of leader kim jongun reviewing documents with military advisers. Nbcs hans nichols is monitoring the latest development from the pentagon. First fshg i want to start with nbcs matt bradley in seoul, south korea, just 35 miles from the north korean border. Matt, south korea president s moon now is essentially claiming veto power over any military action on the peninsula. Does he have that . Reporter well, the short answer is no, he doesnt, stephanie, but the thing is we have to remember that what he said in his speech today reflects some very real frustration among koreans,

Despite reports the rogue regime appears to be holding off on its threat to attack guam, people in guam are on edge again this morning after guams radio stations accidentally broadcast an emergency civil danger warning overnight. Reporter well, the short answer is no, he doesnt, stephanie, but the thing is we have to remember that what he said in his speech today reflects some very real frustration among koreans,
South Koreans, especially among those leftwing
South Koreans who adhere to president moons democratic party. They are by far the biggest stake holders in this rapidly escalating feud between the
United States and north korea. So when somebody like
President Trump ramps up his bellicose rhetoric and threatens fire and brimstone and all sorts of sue ler superlatives, people here get upset because theyre in the firing lines. It doesnt take a fancy icbm to destroy a city like seoul, a city of 25 million people, and north korea could level this city using conventional weapons fired from the bordner just a matter of minutes. It wouldnt take such a long time like it would to fire to guam or to the continental
United States. But also, stephanie, we have to remember this was a speech that was aimed at south korean domestic consumption. Today was liberation day. This was the anniversary of the liberation of the entire korean peninsula, both north and south, from japanese colonial oppression. So thats why it was a patriotic speech and also a very decidedly political speech. President moon was defending his leftwing position, which calls for negotiations and peace with north korea. Hes already been ridiculed in the rightwing press here in south korea for his naivete when it comes to this sort of decision, so hes going to be actually defending that and trying to stake a claim. Hes not necessarily using realistic language. All hes saying is were south korean, were standing up for ourselves against this american juggernaut making decisions in our name. Stephanie . Thank you, matt. I want to bring hans nichols in live at the pentagon. There are reports saying kim jongun has blinked and maybe north korea is backing down. I like to listen to admiral james, our own andrea mitchell, who said blinked, maybe not blinked, maybe opened his eyes a little. Whats he really doing . Here at the pentagon theyre still assessing what hes saying. In a lot of way theys dont take a lot of stock in what kim jongun dawes. Hay they look at what he does. Hes move missiles around, km17s, mobile launchers that can be launched at any moment. You look at the second part of what kim jongun said. He said if the u. S. Persists with these operations, those are war games, scheduled to take place august 21st, threeweek war games, just talking to officials about this, really what they are is the first week is cry us is and the second two weeks are planning for conflict, thats the north invasion of the south. Again, all strategic, all theoretical war games, but they go all the way up to the president of south korea. Stephanie . Again, twice in a row, scary times. All right, hans. Thank you so much. Going to take a quick break. Next, my favorite par of the show, money, power, politics. We are five minutes from the opening bell. Talking about the president

North Carolina where a crowd pulled down a bronze statue depicting a confederate soldier in durham. Protesters kicked the statue after it fell. Next to france, where a 12yearold girl died when a driver plowed his car into a pizzeria outside paris. An official tells the
Associated Press the man was suicidal and it was not terror related sxwroop a 23yearold is in federal custody accused of driving a 1,000pound bomb to an

Statement Last night. The 28yearold made his 2017 debut after undergoing surgery and chemotherapy for testicular cancer. He threw a sevenshutout innings before he was relieved at the top of the eighth. Not a bad way to come back. All right. We are watching the opening bell on wall street. Market opened just a minute ago. There you have it. Billboard hot 100 thereupon this morning. The market is up slightly, really too early to tell, but in the meantime, its all about the business. This business president has been shedding ceos from his
Advisory Council over his response to the violence in charlottesville. Kenneth frazier, head of pharmaceutical giant merck, stepped down monday morning. The helds of under armour and intel followed later. Several ceos remain on the president s council, and some are saying for how long. Well talk money, power, politics with my friend, my favorite, cnbcs and
New York Times andrew ross sorkin. You put out a piece on this last night. The business pressure, the ceos are outraged in private but what do they do in public . Thats the issue. So many rr outraged by the president s lack of response over the weekend to the situation in charlottesville and so many of them i think to some degree want to
Say Something publicly, not just something about the hate and the violence, which many of them have said, but about the president s reaction and what that says about leadership and sort of the moral courage to do that. The issue for them is look what happened yesterday. As one of them said to me, did you see what happened to ken . He got whacked. Im not putting my head above the clouds. So thats sort of the big issue right now, what does it mean to be a leader today of a big company like this . Do you call out the president . And if you d call out the president , what does it mean commercially to your business . Maybe its a positive. This is not a right or left issue. What happened in charlottesville, i mean, i invite you to look at the picture, watch the video, this is standing up against hate. From a business perspective, not a moral perspective. You have gop leaders leaving the president over this. It could be a
Good Business decision p. No question by the way, and you have seen a lot of the leaders come out or ceos i should say come out and condemn the violence and condemn the hate and condemn people
Walking Around with swastika flags, absolutely. I think the question to me, the bigger issue, is if youre going to be within oon one of these president s councils dork you publicly condemn his reaction to it. Dare i say, there has been a pattern and practice with this president of not coming out forcefully against this. Now, i dont know if that means hes a raci. I dont know if its political calculus, but whatever it is, its his calculus and from a moral perspective, and on behalf not only of the employees but sometimes perhaps the customers and these companies, is it within the purview of a ceo to do something about it . Dare i say these councils dont do anything. Besides photo opportunities, you tell me, all of these meetings result in butkus. You have the head of a
Manufacturing Union saying theyre ine fkial. And butkus is a technical term. To a large degree, everybodys getting used as a prop, right . The ceos are used as props in the meetings. The president to some degree by the way on the flip side is being used as prop for some of these companies. Kevin frazier was being called a genius several weeks ago, touted by the people at merck, look, our ceo is a genius. It goes both ways. Is something meaningful happening as a result of all of this . I dont know. Im not sure about that. But i think a lot of them for better or worse say to themselves i want a seat at the table, i want to be part of this conversation. Taxes are going to be an issue. I want to talk about that. If im in the health care industry, i want to be part of that. By the way, talk about merck, the government is a huge buy yr of drugs. What is this going to mean to his company . There are moral issues here, there are commercial issues here. Its comply catted. Beyond his hate tweets, can the president hurt these companies . I think its possible that they can to some degree. Think about under armour. There will be people who will run out today and buy under armour shirts because they think that kevin plank made the right decision. There are a lot of other people by the way who may not buy under armour because of it. Someone from pepsico made a comment that was construed as critical of the president early when he was first e lkted, there was a boycott of pepsico products. Lected, there was a boycott of pepsico products. Itis a very difficult position if youre in this role. Having said that, i think long term history will reward those with the courage to at least stand up for their police chiefchief chiefs beliefs. Stand up for their bleaches. I dont think its hard to stand up to the kkk and the nationalists. Next,
President Trump pulling out all the stops in the alabama special election, recording a robocall and going on a tweet storm. This morning. Thats the agenda hes foxed on. Could his support actually be hurting his candidate of choice . This isnt republicans versus republicans. This is trump versus the world. The great beauty of owning a property is that you can create wealth through capital appreciation, and this has been denied to many south africans for generations. This is an opportunity to right that wrong. The idea was to bring capital into the

And that gave other investors confidence. Citis really unique, because they bring deep understanding of whats happening in africa. I really believe we only live once, and so you need to take an idea that you have and go for it. You have the opportunity to say, ive been part of the creation of over 27,000 units of housing, and to replicate this across the entire african continent. 40 million americans are waking up to a gillette shave. As one of those workers, im proud to bring you gillette quality for less, because nobody can beat the men and women of gillette. Gillette the best a man can get. Hi, this is president donald trump, and i love the people of alabama, and i hope you vote ow for
Luther Strange for senate. We are doing things that a lot of people said were impossible, but i need loouter to help us out. That means so much. That is part of
President Trumps lastditch push for
Luther Stranges senate bid. The alabama republican was appointed to replace attorney general jeff sessions, facing off in a primary challenge today against congressman mo brooks and former
Alabama Supreme Court judge roy moore. Strange was upbeat after voting this morning. I personally am so grateful for his endorsement. I hope the voters will take his endorsement to heart and vote for me today. Garrett haake in hoover, alabama. What are you hearing from voters . Reporter good morning, stephanie. The bottom line here is alabama republican primary voters love donald trump and they hate just about
Everything Else theyve seen out of washington over the last seven months, and that includes what some have described to me as the donothing senate led by
Mitch Mcconnell. So
Luther Strange is in a tough spot. Hes wielding that endorsement from
President Trump like a baseball bat. Hes got the robocall, running television ads. Theyre trying to remind everybody out here he is
Donald Trumps guy. The problem from him is hes also perceived as
Mitch Mcconnells guy and that carries a lot of baggage here in alabama. The two other candidates running against him, judge roy moore, has a pretty solid base of evangelical voters, then theres mo brooks, the tea party,
Freedom Caucus congressman from northern alabama saying the president has essentially been captured by swamp creatures who have convinced him to support
Luther Strange instead of himself and that is affecting some of his voters. I asked one of his supporters at rally last night what she thinks about
Luther Stranges two big endorsements starting with that one from the president. I hope it doesnt carry very much, but the people of alabama understand whats at stake. Mitch mcconnell thinks he can come to alabama and tell us who he wants in the congress, in the senate with him, that doesnt play well down here. Reporter so were expecting a low turnout here in alabama,
Something Like 20 to 25 of primary voters come ought to vote. If nobody gets over the 50 threshold, well have a runoff so another couple weeks of an ugly,
Bruising Campaign to come. During to our data superstar, msnbc
National Political correspondent steven kornacki. Steve, what is a donald trump endorsement sfwhort. This is an interesting test here as garrett said. Turnout will probably be on the low end today but look at the force at work in this republican primary election. Roy moore, nationally known, refusing years ago to take down that
Ten Commandments monument, also refusing to enforce the gay marriage ruling of the
Supreme Court for a time. Roy moore ran for governor in 2006, ran in 2010. Is this finally his moment in 2017 . And of course you had mo brooks, he before this campaign when donald trump was in alabama last year, running for republican nomination for president , mo brooks didnt just not support donald trump. He called him a serial adulterer. He said he was not morally fit to be president of the
United States. Now mo brooks is trying to run against a candidate endorsed by donald trump. Thats an interesting element to this. As you said and garrett was telling you,
Luther Strange, big luther they call him, 69, hes sort of torn right now, technically the incumbent, appointed to the seat months ago. Mitch mcconnell, the
Republican Senate leader, is pulling out all the stops for him. Here is the question and the results will answer this. Theres sort of a scale here. Is he going to be weighted down more by
Mitch Mcconnell being actively behind him and robert bentley, the governor of alabama to who had to resign, pleaded guilty to ethics violations, hes the guy who appointed
Luther Strange. So is he going to be weighted down by them or is donald trump, whos supporting him, going to be enough to prop him up . I cant believe that picture. Itis a good one, huh . 85 , that is
Donald Trumps
Approval Rating with alabama republicans so unquestionably donald trump is an as set here. Is it enough to overcome the baggage. No, go back to the other one. You want to see the picture again . Remember jib jab . That picture of
Mitch Mcconnell, smiling, never seen him like that. Mcconnell, bentley, strange, trump, thats what he hopes weighs more. I dont know how its spoetzed to look. Well find out which one of these things carries more weight with republican primary voters in alabama. And to test the republicans around the country i think will be looking at too. How much pull does donald trump have with their voters . How awesome is that picture . Luther strange needs to make that his profile pic. Well take a break. Next,
President Trump finally delivered a strongish statement denouncing the hate groups responsible for the awful violence that took place this weekend. But how does his statement and the fact it took two days to deliver it compare to american conservative heros in history . Before we go, we talked about it earlier, the mooch back,
Anthony Scaramucci appeared on
Stephen Colbert last night. An interesting perspective on his short tenure. Do you feel burned or backstabbed . Not at all. I really . Let me put it this way. When you take a jock like that, stephen, you know your

Be up for it to those individuals who persist in such hateful behavior, you are the ones who are out of step with our society and this country for what it stand for will not stand for your conduct. That, of course, was president
Ronald Reagan calling out and denouncing racist groups back in 1981. But, this morning,
President Trump finds himself in a tough spot. His statements following the deadly violence in charlottesville, virginia, could do lasting damage to his agenda. One he is pushing hard, including tax reform. I want to bring in msnbc political analyst and author john meacham. John, i want is to start out with a tweet you put out on saturday. History will judge the president s word play over resurgeant
White Nationalism harshly, and sooner, i think, than he realizes. Explain. I think that usually it takes some time to understand what is going on in a given presidency. I think that its pretty clear in real time whats happening here. The president for a variety of political motives has decided that he will have this morally ambiguous relationship with the altright. He, we were joking in my household most of last night that can you imagine a world where the
New York Times runs a headline that a president bowing to pressure denounces racism. You dont need pressure for that. And the fdr once said that the presidency is preeminently a place of moral leadership. I think as more people in the country begin to feel the vacuum there, i think that the president s already cratering
Approval Rating will continue to go down. Then give us a history lesson. In the past republicans showed
Ronald Reagan earlier they have not hesitated to call out racist groups. I want to share what bob dole said back in 1996. It was very clear. If there is anyone who has mistakenly attached himself to our party and the belief that were not open to citizens of every race and religion, then let me remind you, tonight this hall belongs to the party of lincoln and the exits which are clearly marked are for you to walk out of as i stand this ground without compromise. Thats bob dole. We heard george bush in the past call david duke an insincere and after the protests on saturday, it was he and his follows who got
President Trump elected and trump remains quiet. Well, you look at we dont have to go back very far. Senator dole was running in the 1990s. 1995 president clinton went to
Oklahoma City after the bombing of the
Federal Building that killed so many people, including the children in that day care center. In that same season, george h. W. Bush, resigned from the
National Rifle association because the nra put out a fundraising letter referring to federal agents as jackbooted thugs. In the wake of 9 11, george w. Bush made a point saying this is not a war against islam, it is a war against terror. I think we should also elude back to the former president george w. Bush who gave a very moving speech in dallas last year on how we need to focus on hope and not fear. The presidency is a place where you have an opportunity to actually allow what lincoln called, the better angels of our nature to take flight for a moment. And i think were missing that right now. But are we allowing
President Trump to make a correction. Whether its
President Trump who says had media is out to get him. Vice president mike pence said the media is parsing his words. President trump did give a speech yesterday and according to that teleprompter speech whether it was read or not does denounce hate groups. So, can we give him credit for that . You know, if were in a debate where were giving credit for within 48 hours he manages to denounce neo nazism in the streets of charlottesville, virginia, where a young woman was killed and two state troopers died, i think its a cliche in our business now. But talk about grading on a curve. You know, its just there is something about these delays. It happened last year with the david duke question. Where he said i dont know david duke. And it took him a little while to then get to i disavow david duke, i disavow the klan. Ultimately he gets there. What is the mean time from the moment of the incident or the question to the ultimate disavowal. Why is there that time . What would hurt
President Trump if he actually denounced it it realtime straight away . He still has a 69
Approval Rating among republicans and those republicans arent simply all
White Nationalists. What would it cost him if he actually denounced them . In my mind, it wouldnt cost him anything and it would help him because it would actually mean that he was trying to govern beyond this very narrow base. He is a minority president. Lets remember that. He did not win the popular vote. And he hasgoverned to his base. Great president s, i know he wants to be one, great president s reach beyond their base. They dont simply look inward. Minority president who has the house and the senate and not many legislative wins just yet. This is the time to learn. Jon, thank you so much for joining me this morning. I appreciate it. Thanks. Coming up, the war inside the white house between steve bannon and h. R. Mcmaster heating up.
