Presence plans to ensure safety on the streets of d. C. And developing, this morning. How much did Capitol Police know, before the riot in the halls of congress . The Washington Post reporting internalCapitol Police intelligence warned that congress, itself, could be targeted. Also. Showdown. The new video of the harrowing moments just outside the senate chamber, and the heroic officer and his efforts that he took to take on those rioters. We are also learning more about that capitol mob, and how dangerously close they came to the Vice President of the United States. As we do say good morning, it is saturday, january 16th. Im kendis gibson. And im lindsey reiser. You can see, in that video, he pushed one of the rioters to agitate him, so that he would follow him, instead of going over to the senate chamber. Trying to lure them away. Just an incredible act of heroism there. We have a team of reporters following the latest right now. Nbc hill capitol correspondent, garrett haake. And a beautiful sunrise in our nations capitol. Nbc news now correspondent, Maura Barrett is in harrisburg, the capital of pennsylvania. Good morning to all of you. Up bright and early with us, and, garrett, lets start with you. The days leading up to Inauguration Day. They dont usually see the massivemilitary presence that we are seeing so tell us about the size right now of this operation. Yeah. Enhanced security for inauguration isnt new but this is far beyond the typical scale. Its beyond the scale even when the National Guard was called out to patrol the streets after the protest in d. C. Over the course of the summer. We are looking at Something Like 20,000 National Guardsmen and women called up in the District Of Columbia right now. Checkpoints downtown, around any kind of tourist site, the mall, the white house, the capitol. If you have ever visited d. C. As a tourist, wherever you went right now, you cant go. I mean, this city is largely locked down. We are also looking at a situation where, later in the week, we will see the bridges from virginia close. An unprecedentedsecurity situation, here in the capitol. But an unprecedented set of challenges, when you combine the coronavirus, and the riot from last week. The possibility of more violence, potentially, in the capitol. They are taking no chances here, in washington, d. C. And, josh, the president is expected to leave the white house, wednesday morning, before the inauguration, so that he can take air force one or at least the 747 version of it to maralago. What more can you tell us about trumps plans for a goingaway ceremony that sounds very dearleaderesque. Well, by the time president elect joe biden raises his hands and takes the oath of office on the steps of the capitol on noon on wednesday, President Trump will already be long gone. He will already be in florida where he is expected to be at his maralago resort. And sources tell us thats because you point out, the president wants to make his exit from washington on air force one. And that call sign is only assigned to the plane that the sitting president is on. And so, as of noon, whatever airplane the president is on is no longer air force one. And so, the president , expected to make that exit, early in the morning. It is possible, according to our sources, that the president may have a ceremony at joint base andrews, after he leaves the white house, arrives at the air force base, before he gets on that plane to head to florida. That would be an opportunity for the president , in one, final moment to address his supporters, as the president of the United States. Not something thats totally unheard of. President obama, also, spoke to supporters, shortly before he left joint base andrews, as well. And in the meantime, the Vice President mike pence, we do expect him to go to the inauguration, unlike President Trump. And at the capitol, he is expected to have some type of brief interaction with Vice President elect Kamala Harris. Not expected to have the typical reception, that often takes place at the naval observatory. The Vice President s official residence, before they go to the capitol. So, instead, just a very brief interaction for them at the capitol during the inauguration. Maura, lets go to you and how the governor of pennsylvania is trying to protect his city and his state. Quote, i will not allow what happened at our nations capitol to happen here. How are they working to prevent that . The governor, here, tom wolf, actually sent 2,000 of pennsylvanias National Guard down to washington, d. C. To help out there. And he activated 450 members here, in pennsylvania. Thats, in addition, to the increased, visible presence we are seeing from Capitol Police here in harrisburg. There is road blockades that are being ready to be set up, as well as barricades around the capitol building. So, local and state officials here are on emergencyalert status. Putting these plans into place. They say that they will have officers available on horseback, a bombsquad presence, drone and helicopter surveillance, and also, with the assistance of the fire department. So, they are all hands on deck this weekend as they are are looking at potential protests that the fbi has warned we might see at at State Capitols across the country. They do point out, though, they havent received any specific threats around the capitol complex. But they are preparing with everything they have on hand, just in case. And we should mention, we have the lieu tenant governor of pennsylvania on deck to speak with him in just a few moments. Garrett, back to d. C. And what seems to be an explosive report from the Washington Post. On the intelligence assessment, before the riot. How much did Capitol Police know before all of this . Well, this Washington Post report is interesting. It says that the Capitol PoliceIntelligence Unit came to a conclusion, a few days before the riot that, unlike in previous, protrump protects in d. C. , the target of any violence wouldnt be counterdemonstrators. This wouldnt be protrump demonstrators fighting with antifa in the streets like we have seen before. But rather, it would the target would be the capitol, itself. Now, i hasten to add nbc news hasnt confirmed even the existence of this report but its controversial, in part, because the days immediately following the attack, d. C. Police chief came out and said they had had no intelligence, that they hadnt been prepared for the possibility of an attack on the capitol. This is something that is going to have to get sorted out as we get further down the investigatory road here. There is a lot of recriminations, a lot of buttcovering happening here, by different members of the different Law Enforcement agencies that are in charge of protecting the United States capitol. So, i think this is one of the things that we are going to see Lieutenant General who was tapped by Speaker Pelosi to investigate this security situation, trying to sort out because, essentially, what we have seen over the last week is a lot of finger pointing about who should have known what, and when . And its not entirely clear, which of these accusations are legitimate, at this point, and which arent. Yeah. Our thanks to our team for kicking us off on this marathon day. Thank you, guys. The new video right there, showing a different angle of that interaction that has become familiar for many of us. Between the rioters and that herocapitol officer, eugene goodman, before he led them away from the senate chambers. I mean, that is so chilling. He is one person, with thousands. We are now learning how dangerously close they got to Vice President mike pence. That mob had reached the senate floor. And a black police officer. You see this mob, that does not look like him from a historical standpoint, been in that position so many times to be able to face off against them. Incredible. Yeah, absolutely. And and we now know they were so close to the president , he had been whisked away just about a minute prior. Joining us right now is texas representative, al green. He and his staff were sheltering in place, while that mob roamed the halls of congress. Congressman, good morning to you. We are happy that you are safe and sound, right now, and joining us this morning. Did you ever think that you would see washington, d. C. , the war zone, practically, that it is right now . Good morning, and, no, i never thought that i would see such. And i might add this. Mr. Goodman was truly a good man. That was a supreme, superb example of how one person, with courage, can make a difference. He saved lives, in my opinion. Cant agree any more. And congressman, some democratic lawmakers say they are increasingly concerned right anyway their own republican colleagues are directly endangering their lives. You were harassed by Trump Supporters at the airport, i believe it was two days after the insurrection. What needs to happen in washington, d. C. And around the country to make yourself and your colleagues feel safe . Do you feel in danger . Well, i have, for some time, lived under threats because of my having called for impeachment, early on. And you dont acclimate to it. You do adjust. Just yesterday, i had a meeting with the fbi. And i am concerned, not so much for myself as, quite frankly, i am for the public. Lets use the example of what happened on my flight. There were persons on there, who identified me as mr. Impeachment. And i could hear people, behind me, saying somethings going to happen. These persons, were persons who identified themselves as supporters of President Trump. When i exited the plane, i had to be escorted into a room. Persons were pursuing. The young man who worked with the airline, who escorted me into the room, had to call for backup. Two Police Officers arrived to escort me to the next gate, which was within feet, less than 100 feet of the gate where i exited the plane. Now, heres the salient point. If i had been a young, africanamerican male, with a barack obama sweatshirt on, with his picture, in full display. It wouldnt have had the security and protection that i had. He would have to leave that airport, and only god knows what may have happened to him. I am concerned about young people, who drive cars and may be stopped by an officer who was a part of this insurrection. When things happen, the young people that get hurt are too often not around to tell their stories. So, we have to worry about the people who dont have the security. We cannot allow this to be about members of congress, only. Yes, we we deserve protection. But the public that i serve, they dont have the level of protection that i have, and they are living in fear. They have told me that they are concerned that someone might hurt them. That someone might hurt them, in a roadrage incident. We have a duty, a responsibility, and an obligation, to provide protection for people across the length and breadth of the country, not just in washington, d. C. Agreed. Amen to that. That said, you are a congressman. You have made it, basically, to the highest office there in this country. And you had a meeting with the fbi, yesterday. What did they say to you . Did they say that your life is in danger . Did they tell you that you need to armor up . What . Well, they made it clear to us, and there were other members present. But they made it clear to us that there are concerns, without getting into great details, there are concerns. And but i felt, after talking to them, and this is whats important, that they were on the case doing their jobs. I believe that they are aware of things that are happening, that i may not be aware of. And i think that they have demonstrated a desire to protect us. And i think thats whats important. But, i would just add this. As as as important as that is, and it is, lets remember this. We have to divest ourselves of the notion that the people, who perpetrate this hate, are persons who are in the hinterlands, backwoods of the country, some sort of yahoos. This hate is perpetuated by the intelligencia. Plessy versus ferguson, the intelligencia. We cannot allow ourselves to believe that they are not in police departments, that theyre not banks where loans are being made to people of color, that they are not in hospitals where needles are going into the arms. We have to divest ourselves of the notion that they are only backwoods persons who are just racists and bigots. That really is the big awakening that we need to get out of that january 6th incident. We have to run. Houstonarea representative, al green. Appreciate your time. Stay safe. Thank you. Camouflage, helmets, body armor. Youd think they were going to war. The threat of violence extending well beyond the nations capitol right now. Some states, already been dealing with ongoing protests, following the elections, they are now, once again, turning into a fortress. In lansing, michigan, and phoenix, we are seeing fences being put up as at least one line of defense. Nbcs dasha burns is in the michigan capital right now, in lansing. She joins us. Good morn, dasha. So, michigan, has seen plenty of protests. There was also that plot, of course, to kidnap the governor there. With so much having already gone on, what type of security precautions are they taking right now . Yeah, thats right. This is a capital that has seen its fair share of threats and armed protest and this is a community that is hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst. Weve seen those security measures get ramped up. We saw the fence go around the front of the capitol. We saw very visible presence from the Michigan State police. And this weekend, they will be joined by the National Guard. The Lansing Police department has, also, warned people that, if they do not have a specific reason to be in this downtown area, this weekend, to stay away. I, also, spoke to the Lansing Police chief, who told me that the level of preparedness is unprecedented, but people are still extremely concerned. And he is worried for his own Police Officers, as we are learning more about the attacks on officers at the u. S. Capitol on january 6th. I also spoke to the mayor of lansing, who told me about what hes worried about, and what he is expecting. Take a listen. What we saw last week at our nations capitol, and some of the the information that the fbi and others have been talking about. Its you know, its its a concern. I totally believe there will be people who come out and peacefully protest and thats what we expect. But there could be some, some few, who try and make it turn violent or take actions they shouldnt. And in that instance, well be ready. You know, we are im always hopeful. Hopeful but prepared. Reporter also, earlier this week, open carry was banned at the capitol. But lawmakers say that it didnt go far enough because concealed carry is still allowed. And while the capitols going to be closed on sunday, lawmakers are going to be in session, next week. And so, the question remains, how will they go about doing the peoples business with this safety concern . Kendis. So, thats progress in michigan . The fact that you cant open carry your weapon but you can conceal it and still take it into the capitol grounds. Mind boggling. Dasha burns, thank you. Joining us now, former atf and fbi agent, scott sweto. Scott, thank you for being here. Appreciate it. Absolutely. What is your take on the security situation in washington, d. C. And other state capitals, for that matter . Its a very challenging security environment. I was talking to some friends that are still serving as agents. And our general consensus was this looks a lot like the aftermath of 9 11. You have the fencing. Troops out in the open. And a Security Posture thats really unprecedented. Its something that i only saw onc
