MSNBCW MSNBC Live With Katy Tur September 14, 2020
Corner, but there are still over 700 americans dying every day. Seven states are seeing a spike in new cases. And the university of washington warns that if we disregard social distancing and masks, which is exactly whats happening at trump rallies, most recently in nevada on saturday, more than 400,000 could die by january. But in
Donald Trumps
final call with bob woodward, he said nothing more could be done. And on our democracy, the president is telling people to violate the constitution, which gives one person one vote by telling them to try and vote twice in november. North carolinas a. G. , josh stein, who is warning people it is a felony to vote twice, joins me later this hour. Let us start, though, with what we can all see with our eyes, the monstrous and not normal fires out west. Both
President Trump
and
Vice President
joe biden are addressing the devastation, but so far, only one is naming the cause. We have four more years of trumps climate denial, how many suburbs will be burned in wildfires . How many suburban neighborhoods will have been flooded out . How many suburbs will have been blown away in superstorms . If you give a climate arsonist four more years in the white house, why would anyone be surprised if we have more of america ablaze . Joining me now is nbc news chief
White House Correspondent
Hallie Jackson
and nbc news correspondent mike memoli who covers the
Biden Campaign
. We heard joe biden, as you said a moment ago, linking all of the crises together and saying that you have to address all of these things,
Climate Change
, the virus, the economy, in order to proceed successfully in this country. But that was a speech that heavily focused on the climate, whats happening out west, it is in marked contrast to what the president says about
Climate Change
, denying it, instead, blaming poor
Forest Management
for what were seeing out west, disregarding were seeing more hurricane and other climate effects around the world and the country. Talk to me about what the
Biden Campaign
was trying to achieve there, especially doing it all the way from out east and not on scene at the fires where the president is going to be later today. Yeah, katy. It was interesting. Im not sure if our viewers were able to hear it, but as biden washington walked away, he said i look forward to hearing what the president has to say. This is clearly an effort by the
Biden Campaign
to seize this issue, to talk about an issue they havent talked about recently, that has to do with the climate crisis, but one biden said is prance the most consequential thing that faces the country. And biden in terms of the location said delaware is the lowest lying state in the country. Obviously, giving some explanation for doing it at home, but this is in addition to the schedule, katy, and they also want to give the opportunity for his running mate, senator
Kamala Harris
, the junior senator from california, who was already planning a trip out west to have a chance to survey the damage herself, to speak to this issue herself. But katy, the
Biden Campaign
really relishes this opportunities as biden indicated with that walkoff comment about the president for these si sidebyside comparisons, a test of what they see as president ial style leadership verses the lackthereof. In terms of the four crises he tried to link together, the pandemic, the economic crisis, racial injustice, and climate, what is the through line as biden laid out in each of those crises that we face now . A president who biden says is not addressing the root causes, is not willing to take on these issues. And of course, katy, most striking is his attempt to really, again, turn that law and order message, that question of safety back on the president , saying if you give this climate arsonist four more years, who thinks we arent going to see these kinds of climate issues exacerbate in the country. Were going to talk more about what might happen if donald trump wins again, around climate in just a moment. Also note, mike memoli, delaware is the latest state to sue fossil fuel companies over
Climate Change
, saying they misled the public, one of four states now including a number of counties and cities across the country doing so. Ha hallie, lets go to you. The president is in california meeting with local officials. Do you have any indication of what hes going to say . Its interesting to hear mike talk about the sort of parting comment from joe biden. Where he said i wonder what the president is going to see or lets see what the president has to say. Were actually not set to see him necessarily at this briefing. Youre looking at a different events hes going to be at, a ceremony for
National Guard
troops in california. Well hear remarks. Im curious to see if hell open up the
Smaller Group
briefing, perhaps to be able to speak to some of what joe biden just laid out in the blistering attack against him on this topic. This is an area,
Climate Change
, that
President Trump
has not made a priority in his administration. In fact, they have successfully rolled back obama era regulations. Hes installed people in key positions across the climate community, in the infrastructure, in the federal government, that hold views that are antithetical to what scientists see as the true root cause of
Climate Change
. There have been a lot of questions about the president mocking
Climate Change
as well. When it comes to wildfires, hes focused on the issue of what he calls
Forest Management
. High, californians need to clean their floors, he says, a reference to kind of raking leaves and dealing with sort of the brush that is in california. But the scientists who work on these issues say that is just not enough. That focusing on
Forest Management
isnt going to get you there when it comes to being able to combat wildfires in an effective way. For the president , as we get ready to see him step off air force one, hes stepping into an issue that joe biden wants to put front and center in 2020, and today, certainly. He also pulled out of the
Paris Climate Accord
. Hallie jackson and mike memoli, thank you guys, both of you. Lets turn to the reality on the ground in california, with nbc news correspondent erin mclaughlin. What are you seeing out there . Hey, katy. Were seeing just complete and total devastation, and were hearing stories of incredible loss and sorrow. Behind me is what remains of someones home here in berry creek. The entire community, the fire house, the school, homes completely leveled, and this is a wound that will go on for years, takes years to recover from this. I was speaking to a couple who is evacuated from the north complex lightning fire, a fire thats claimed 14 lives so far. Evacuations in the thousands. The couple was telling me how scared they were. They lost their home in 2018 to the paradise fire, and they have been homeless ever since. They have been homeless for two years. They have not been able to recover from that trauma. Now, evacuating because of the smoke of this fire. They talked to me, how scared they are, how shocked they are, and how worried they are about their future. Take a listen. Psychologically, its a struggle. This is really, i mean, its scary. Like doing it over again. I realize now were not in danger, but the smoke. Its the smoke, the environment. Its just its like reliving it. Now, in terms of now in terms of the reality here on the front lines, fire officials tell us this entire area is under a red flag warning. Theyre particularly concerned about the winds kicking up, winds expected to be up to 20
Miles Per Hour
today, going into tomorrow. Compounding already difficult fire conditions, although they say they have been preparing for those winds, working those containment lines all weekend, and theyre ready for it. Katy. Erin mclaughlin, thank you very much for reality on the ground. This is the president now speaking at mcclellan park, california. Lets listen to what hes saying. In oregon, and i think theyll go well. Theyre doing an incredible job. This is one of the biggest burns we have ever seen, and we have to do a lot about
Forest Management
. Obviously,
Forest Management
in california is very important, and now it extends to washington and extends also to oregon. It has to be good, strong
Forest Management
, which i have been talking about for three years with the state. So hopefully theyll start doing that. In the meantime, were helping them out in a very big way. We have the best people in the world doing this. We have all of our people from fema. We have
Law Enforcement
here. We have the army corps of engineers. We have basically some other military and military operatives that do this. And im going to meet with the governor right now, gavin newsom. We worked very well together. I have approved the emergency declaration, as you know. And i think well have a very good meeting. I think youre going to be able to go and take a few pictures, a shot. We may or may not keep you there as far as im concerned, i would be okay with it, but maybe the state would rather not have that, and thats okay with me, too. So were going to go in right now. Then were going, as you know, to arizona. Were meeting with a very great group of people, hispanic people who have done really well, and they understand exactly whats happening, and we have had tremendous support, as you know and you can see from probably everything including polls. I dont give a lot of significance to polls, even though we have been getting very good polls. We just got a very good one from rasmussen, as you probably saw. And we certainly got a very good one from within the republican party, 95 to 96 . Were going to do our meeting now with state officials including the governor, and then ill see you in a little while, and then ultimately, and were also giving seven medals to seven great really heroes, really truly heroes, and i look forward to doing that. Well have a little bit of a press conference inside. What would you like to see specifically done on the issue of
Forest Management
. Is it possible its also
Forest Management
and
Climate Change
. I think something is possible, a lot of things are possible. With regard to the forests, when trees fall down after a short period of time, about 18 months, they become very dry. They become really like a match stick. And they get up, you know, theres no more water pouring through, and they become very, very they just explode. They could explode. Also, leaves. When you have years of leaves, dried leaves on the ground, it just sets it up. Its really fuel for a fire. So they have to do something about it. They also have to do cuts. I mean, people dont like to do cuts, but they have to do cuts in between. So if you have a fire, and it gets away, youll have a 50yard cut in between. So it wont be able to catch to the other side. They dont do that. If you go to other countries, you go to austria, you go to finland, you go to many different countries, and they dont have i was talking to a head of a major country, and he said were a forest nation. We consider ourselves a forest nation. This was in europe. I said thats a beautiful term. He said, we have trees that are far more explosive, he meant explosive in terms of fire, but we have trees that are far more explosive than they have in california. And we dont have any problem. Because we manage our forest. We have to do that in california, too. So ill go do this, and well see you in a little while. You mentioned about
Forest Management
lets bring in a scientist to go through that. Lets bring in michael mann, a distinguished professor of
Atmospheric Science
at penn state, also the author of the madhouse effect. Michael, lets get your take on what the president just said, your scientific take on what the president just said. Its
Forest Management
thats the problem here, not necessarily
Climate Change
. Thanks, katy. Good to be with you. Where to start . I mean, just about nothing that the president just said is true. You have experts who have looked at the reasons for why we vene a fivefold increase in the extent of wildfire across the western u. S. California, oregon, washington in particular. And its very clear, when you take into account all changes in land use practices and forest, you know, management policies, there is only one thing that explains why we have seen the increase in the extent and the intensity and the fast spreading nature of these fires. And its simple. Its hot and its dry. When you take record heat, which is what the west coast is seeing this summer, you take record drought, the west coast, calf camp, has seen the worst drought in at least a millennial in the past decade. You put those things together, you get these sorts of massive wildfires. Ill tell you, we have such a stark decision before us, and that was set up so beautifully by the exchange we saw before this segment, where we have one president who has recognized that this is the greatest crisis we face, the greatest longterm crisis is
Climate Change
. And has a bold plan to deal with it, and thats joe biden. And we have another president who is in complete denial. We cant afford another four years of denial, if we are going to avert the worst impacts of
Climate Change
, and were seeing them play out now. Lets talk about what he just said about another nation not having the same problems that were having with these fires. A nation that, again, were taking his word that he says deems itself a forest nation. Talk to me about the comparisons between us and another nation with forests, and also, i dont know, maybe loop in australia, which you were at, you were in that country earlier this year, when they were dealing with absolutely devastating fires that were consuming much of the country. Yeah, absolutely. And you know, look, the president made a similar comment some months ago. I think he alluded to finland, i forget if it was finland or sweden, only to have them come out and say everything you just said about us is completely wrong. And so we know hes no longer specifying a specific country because he doesnt want to give them an opportunity to debunk what hes saying. Look, europe is a cooler and much more humid region. California is a mediterranean environment, a subtropical environment. Australia is a subtropical environment. And one of the most robust predictions made by climate models decades ago would be that the subtropics would get both hotter and drier. Thats what were seeing in australia where i was earlier this year, and i saw regard wildfires play out. I also saw the murdoch media empire and conservative news sources and internet trolls probably associated with russia putting out all sorts of misinformation and disinformation blaming this on arson. When the fire, you know,
Management Community
came out and said, no, look, there is only one thing that can explain why we are seeing such massive, hot burning, intense wildfires like we have never seen before, and its the hot, dry conditions that are being created by
Climate Change
. So its the same story. Its the same factor, and the same sorts of denial that were seeing from conservatives who find the scientific implications frankly inconvenient because it tells us that we need to get off of our burning of fossil fuels. Thats very inconvenient to a party that is beholden to the fossil fuel industry. Michael, its not just fire. And i think theres a tendency to focus on any one event at one time and the people who dont agree with
Climate Change
will say, well, that one event is caused by this one thing. Its not just fires, and in a moment, were going to talk about whats happening out in the gulf. More hurricanes. We are so far down the line in terms of named storms this
Hurricane Season
that were about to run out of letters and go into roman numerals. Thats right. And we havent seen this since 2005. And this season may end up being an even more active season than 2005. At the risk of repeating this phrase, its not rocket science. Whether its the wildfires out west created by the heat and the drought or the intensifying superstorms that were seeing strike the east coast and gulf coast of the
United States
this summer, because of the unusually hot conditions, you make the oceans warmer, and we see near record sea surface temperatures over large parts of the tropical atlantic. Its why we predicted back in april we would see a record storm season and were seeing that come to fruition. Theres more energy to intensify these storms. Theres more moisture in those storms because the air is warmer. It can hold more moisture, and so you get more of those flooding rains. You get worse inland flooding in addition to those very large coastal surges built by the large winds associated with these intense hurricanes. And the science is very clear here. There was just an article published a few weeks ago in one of the leading journals of nature, pointing out that there is an increase in the intensity of these storms, and it is tied to global warming, human caused
Climate Change
. So whether its the wildfires out west or the superstorms back east, were seeing dangerous
Climate Change
play out before our eyes. And this is what the science is telling us. And while it is not a perfect solution, the
Donald Trumps final call with bob woodward, he said nothing more could be done. And on our democracy, the president is telling people to violate the constitution, which gives one person one vote by telling them to try and vote twice in november. North carolinas a. Thats right. Its grandfathered. It was grandfathered in a way that in a very prophetic manner, sort of trumpproof. One term of trump proof. But if we get a second term of trump, we will see the pullout from the paris accord, which only gets us halfway to where we need to be. Just a foot in the door. We have to go well beyond paris. Just meeting paris obligations alone isnt enough, but trump will pull out of paris. That will sabotage the

Tropical storm sally has intensified into a category 1 hurricane, slowly making its way toward the southeastern gulf coast. The storm, which drenched parts of florida this weekend, is expected to make landfall tuesday or early wednesday. Hurricane sally will bring a dangerous storm surge and heavy rainfall. It is too early to tell exactly where the storm will land along the gulf, but mississippi and louisiana have already issued states of emergency for coastal residents. Mississippi governor tate reeves is urging residents within chalets shifting path to take the hurricane seriously. If you are south of jackson and particularly if youre south of hattiesburg, prepare now. Now is the time to prepare. Continue to monitor the weather. But be prepared for the worst case scenario. Lets bring in meteorologist
Michelle Grossman and from gulfport, mississippi, nbc news correspondent sam brock. Michelle, first to you. Talk to us about where the storms are tracking right now. All right, hi there, katy. Your last guest said it all. Were seeing some changes, bigtime changes in terms of the climate, and i want to show you this graphic because if this tropical season or this snapshot of the tropics does not say it all, we are very, very busy right now. So we want to go to graphics 308, where were looking at tracking the tropics. We have five storms in the atlantic right now, and that is the busiest since 1971. So we have not seen this since 1971. With sally being the one that will target the u. S. Its graphics 308 if we could go to this, but sally, latest is category 1 storm, awfully close to a category 2 storm. At 90
Miles Per Hour, and it will reach you only need 96
Miles Per Hour to be a hurricane category 2 hurricane. So as we look at tracking the tropics, were also looking at watches and warnings along the coast here, and once again, i believe this is the wrong graphic source. We need graphics 308, but were looking at all right, were looking at tracking sally, so category 2 storm. As we go throughout the next 24 hours, we could see a category 2 storm make landfall along the gulf coast states. Were looking at watches and warnings here we go, along the gulf coast. Where you see the red is your hurricane warning. That includes new orleans, biloxi, over to parts of the florida panhandle. Heres the latest, 90
Miles Per Hour, and were looking at moving at 7
Miles Per Hour, expected to slow down to 3
Miles Per Hour, so that is the big trouble. Were going city this system really come to a halt, and were going to see just a huge rain maker with rain up to two feet in some spots. Katy. And thats what was so bad about what happened in houston a few years ago, that storm wasnt so powerful, but it was very slow moving, and it stayed over houston and caused massive flooding destruction. Sam brock, lets go over to you. You are on a beach, it looks a little windy. What are you seeing there . How are people preparing . The wind is starting to pick up, no question, katy. A dual threat of storm surge, which michelle was just talking about. Over my shoulder, you have, of course, the gulf right here. And then, down the way, raufrinl a major problem, especially if the system continues to slow down. What youre looking at is potentially 2 to 3 inches an hour for 10, 11, 12 hours which is where you get that 24inch number. Just had conversation with the emergency director of
Harrison County here in mississippi, which is where i am. Im in gulfport. Biloxi is right over my shoulder. Hes telling me his number one concern right now is loss of life or lives, and if that were to happen, it would be because of water. Now, we do know this, theres a sea wall that extends all the way down to where those casinos are. Thats been built for more than half a century, since about 1950. A lot of the businesses around here, katy, are also elevated on stilts, homes as well. That came courtesy largely of 2005 and katrina, there damage that was inflicted there. This is an area thats prepared in that sense. Mandatory evacuations for all low lying areas and all areas south of the sea wall, folks are being told to go to a safe place and hunker down, because the longer that this takes, three to five miles an hour is walking speed. If sally comes through at walking speed and dumps 8. 10, 12, 16, 20 inches of rain, that is potentially lifethreatening flooding, and of course, lifethreatening storm surge. Were keeping an eye on both of those. Sam brock and
Michelle Grossman, both of you, thank you very much. And the tougher and meaner foreign leaders are the better the president says he gets along with them. We have a new audio recording released by bob woodward, next. These humans, those humans. Groovin, and golden. Its about getting more than

Public Schools make a better california for all of us. The president s affinity for dictators is no secret, and new audio released by rage author bob woodward, mr. Trump offers something of an explanation for why he maintains cozy relationships with authoritarian leaders like turkish president erdogan. I get along very well with erdogan. Its funny that the relationships i have, the meaner they are, the better i get along with them. Youll explain that to me some day, but maybe its not a bad day. The easy ones are maybe the ones i dont like as much or dont get along with as much. Lets bring in nbc news digital senior
White House Reporter shannon pettypiece. We have seen this before. The president s affinity for authoritarian rulers. We havent heard him try to explain why privately. What did you what were you able to glean from that interview, and is the white house giving a response to this, or do they think everything is hunkydory . Well, we havent really gotten a chance to hear much from the president today on these latest tapes that come out or really anyone in the white house responding to them. I think it speaks to this broader issue of the white house staff being in the dark about what is still to come out from these tape recordings. And the president himself may not even remember what he has told woodward in these tape recordings that are now starting to become a bit of a drip, drip, drip for this administration as they try and get everyones focus and conversation elsewhere. Within the white house, one of the things we were hearing early on from our sources was sort of a blame game, of the current staffers saying, well, this wasnt us. These interviews were things that were handled under mick mulvaney, under the
Previous Communications staff, and they have nothing to do with us. Former
Administration Officials are saying they didnt have anything to do with us either. Also saying, you know, the president was on his own here. And this was something that he chose and one former aide indicating to me that universally within the white house, there was a sense the president should not be talking to bob woodward but went ahead and did it anyway. Thats something i have heard from former
Administration Officials who were there during the first bob woodward book who couldnt believe bob woodward was back in the white house, katy. Yeah, no doubt about that. Shannon pettypiece, thank you so much. With me now is former cia director john brennan. Hes also an msnbc
Senior National security and intelligence analyst. John, its always good to have you. I want to talk about the way this president takes in information. He has the entire
National Security apparatus around him. But we have seen from the past four years is that he trusts his gut more. Were learning even more about that now from this book by bob woodward, specifically, what happens with north korea in the first year of his presidency. As north korea was setting off those or sending off those ballistic missiles. And the president was exchanging this very heated rhetoric with kim jongun. Theyre saying now, or the president is saying now that we came very close to war. When you were reading those chapters, as somebody who has dealt with this in the past, give me your reaction. Well, katy, i think it was an overstatement in terms of we were very close to war, unless donald trump was ready to push the button of war, but i dont think kim jongun was ready to go to war in any way at that point. He was challenging us, trying to see what he could get, and indeed, he got a meeting with the president on the world stage. What were seeing with the woodward book is donald trump really does admire those individuals who have many of the same characteristics he has, unethical, unprincipled, and willing to make deals that benefit themselves but not necessarily their country. So his affinity, as you pointed out, for authoritarian leaders, has been no secret. I think hes willing to admit that openly, because before he became president of the
United States, he was the head of a private
Family Company that he could do whatever he wanted, and he would cut corners in order to do these business deals. So i think, again, were seeing very much a reflection of that approach that he has taken throughout his life, and he likes these strongmen who are the same type of individuals as donald trump, again, stooping to any tactic in order to further advance their own personal interests. Lets talk about why the president in his words gets along with them so much better. These strongmen. Bob woodward talks about those letters between donald trump and kim jongun. Those quote unquote love letters. How have these foreign leaders, these authoritarian foreign leaders treated the president and used him to their advantage . Well, i think they have been able to understand that donald trump is the epitome of a narcicisstic leader who enjoys flattery. And by the letters of kim jongun or the words of
Vladimir Putin, or other things authoritarian leaders have said both publicly and privately to him, it really appeals to his ego and makes him more interested in working closely with them, and hes blind to the
National Security implications of a lot of these exchanges that he has with the foreign leaders. And thats why hes willing to negotiate away a lot of the very important
National Security interests of the
United States, such as stopping military exercises with our very good partner, south korea. When he meets with these individuals. Hes like putty in their hands, and unfortunately, they have understood exactly what they need to do in order to take advantage of donald trump. These were similar warnings that were made during the 2016 election about the way to get to donald trump, flatter him first, and then hell answer any question you want, and hell work with you. We saw that with the press, flatter him first and then hell come home and answer a harder question. Lets talk about
Alexander Vindman. Theres new reporting today, new interview with him today, where he says this
President Trump should be considered to be a useful idiot and a fellow traveler, which makes him an unwitting agent of putin. This aligns with
Something Else from the book rage about coming from dni dan coats who said he just couldnt shake this feeling that russia had something on donald trump. There was no explanation for his behavior other than they must know something that the president doesnt want revealed. Well, i fully agree. I think theres a lot we all have to learn yet about
Donald Trumps relationship, past and present, with the russians, and specifically with
Vladimir Putin. It is inexplicable how he has been able to just continue to work with
Vladimir Putin and not hold him to account for what the russians have done to our electoral system. And thats why i think donald trump is not really interested in stopping russian interference in this election, because he knows that because of russian interference in the 2016 election, that is what helped get donald trump elected in terms of the
Electoral College votes. And so therefore, i think there is still a lot that we need to know because he refused to be interviewed by bob mueller, theres a lot of information in terms of his financial dealings with russia and with other countries that has yet to see the light of day. His tax returns have never been released. So donald trump is hiding a lot that i think would explain in part more of his behavior and his actions over the last three and a half years. The concerns about his relationship with russia persist even among those who are still in this administration. John brennan, thank you so much for joining us. And
Lieutenant Colonel
Alexander Vindman sat down for his
First Ever Television interview today with lester holt. Take a listen. The president suggested you are a never trumper. Are you a never trumper . I joined this administration, i joined the president s team. I joined this administration well into this administration with the hopes of being able to do my job, with the hopes of being able to advance u. S. National security interests. I could say that i am now a never trumper. I was not a never trumper before. I was nonpartisan. Regardless of what administration i would just try to do the best i could to advance
National Security interests, but i think as the president s attacked and politicized me directly, and in taking a very sober view of where this president is taking this country, the divisions, the catering to our adversaries, the undermining of
National Security interests that i am absolutely a never trumper. You can watch more of their conversation tonight on nbc nightly news. Do not miss it. Next up,
Drug Companies are being criticized for a lack of transparency about their efforts to find a vaccine. Were going to sort through it. Here are the facts as we know them at this hour. Nevadas governor is slamming
President Trump for holding an indoor rally near las vegas this weekend. Governor steve sislic called it reckless and selfish. Nevada has a ban on gatherings larger than 50 people. The
World Health Organization is warning
European Countries to prepare for a new spike in coronavirus cases this fall. Researchers expect the spike in new cases to pick up during october and november, followed by a surge in covidrelated deaths this winter. Maine
Health Officials have linked five covid deaths to an indoor wedding reception held in august. The wedding sparked two outbreaks in the state. One at a jail and another at a rehab facility. And video of a
Massive Party near the
New York University campus showed crowds with few masks and little social distancing. Police arrived to mabreak up th gathering at
Washington Square park. This is the second weekend in a row a party has been held there. How dangerously irresponsible. For a second time since the start of the pandemic, florida bars can reopen starting today. Bars initially reopened back in june and almost immediately covid cases began to climb in that state. A massive spike followed one month later prompting the state to close them again. Now, the state is allowing them to reopen again, but parts of the state are
Still Holding off. Joining me now from ft. Lauderdale, florida, is nbc news correspondent kerry sanders. Hey, kerry. Hey, katy. Well, the areas that are not opening, of course, are where the greatest concentration of population is. Thats in south florida,
Palm Beach County with a million and a half residents, here in broward county, ft. Lauderdale, 2 million, and 3 million in miamidade county. And of course, the bar owners are anxious and upset because they say that even though they recognize that there is a reason for this, for the health side of it, theyre also concerned that the financial side is causing them to potentially go out of business forever. This is what the trade
Association Representative had to say about the continued closings here in south florida. I really dont understand why with social distancing, mandate masks. Do whatever you have to do to put in all of the restrictions to make it still i mean, none of us want to be unsafe. None of us want to have an unhealthy environment. But we need to get the state back open. I mean, our unemployment is higher than its ever been, 11. 3 . This state was rocking before covid. Of course,
Health Officials are saying that part of the problem is people dont understand or simply ignore the social distancing rules in places that do open. As we just saw, you pointed out in new york, at the washington park, as we have seen here in florida over the weekend, up in tallahassee, at
Florida State university. People gathering, and of course, you run into that other aspect of in a concentrated bar, even when you try to tell people to stay apart, people take their masks off for obvious reasons. Theyre drinking. Katy. And when youre drinking, you get looser with the restrictions. You dont take them as seriously because youre a little tipsy. It happens. Kerry sanders, thanks so much. We appreciate it. Not to say thats okay. Lets bring in dr. Irwin redlener, the director of columbia universitys
National Center for disaster preparedness. Its good to have you. I have to tell you, im still a little fired up and spun out over what i just saw in those images from
Washington Square park here in new york city, after all we went through in this city, to see those that party in that park happening two weekends in a row, with no social distancing and very few masks, it is infuriating for maybe out of town kids to come in to this city and to put everybody at risk and endanger again after everything this city went through, this state went through, new jersey and the other states surrounding us went through in the spring. It is just amazing that were still seeing this happening. What can the city do . What can we do to make sure that this stuff doesnt happen again this weekend . Yeah, hi, katy. This is extremely distressing, and basically, were having really an epidemic of irresponsibility across the country, in many, many, many campuses. This is a problem. Some of the universities are actually overtly telling their students to go home, which means that theyre creating superspreader opportunities for people to go back to their
Home Communities and just spread the virus around. I mean, this is happening from coast to coast. And now were about to have most of the states now opening their school systems. So well also have another big risk factor, a boiling pot of potential other spreaders in terms of younger children. So were going to be facing, as fauci said a number of times now, a very, very potentially wicked fall and winder when it comes to this spread of covid19, katy. Lets talk about
Something Else that just happened a few minutes ago. The
New York Times reports that michael caputo, the assistant secretary of
Public Affairs at the department of health and
Human Services said without evidence, that the cdc is harboring a, quote,
Resistance Unit determined to undermine
President Trump. This has been kind of percolating for a few days now. Theres another person in hhs who has been trying to tell dr. Fauci to change some of the wording that he uses in interviews. Now this idea that the cdcs reports need to be edited by this other doctor before they go out. What is your reaction to this . You know, katy, what an extraordinarily reckless thing to do for the administration to go out and further undermine our
Major Health Agencies like the cdc, the fda, and so on. To have an emissary of the
Administration Try to influence what the cdc does or what tony fauci says is preposterous, its reckless, its dangerous, and its just another reason why this administration has been so incompetent and dangerous in its management of this outbreak since the very beginning. He himself ought to be muzzled and brought back into wherever his office is at hhs, but he needs to stay away i want to be clear about this, he needs to stay away from the responsible, important agencies that are trying to guard our health. That is the cdc, the fda, and other agencies. This is a terrible thing for the administration to be doing. And another example of why this administration doesnt deserve to be leading the american people, katy. More dangerously, its undercutting trust among regular americans at the cdc or fda or other
Health Agencies operating independently and according to the science, not according to politics. Dr. Irwin redlener, thank you so much for joining us, as always. North carolinas attorney general is warning his states voters to ignore the president s advice to vote twice. He joins me next. Customize yourr insurance so you only pay for what you need. House Oversight subcommittee held a hearing on the usps and postmaster general louis dejoys potential conflicts. A precursor to the upcoming wednesday deadline to comply with a subpoena of documents that democrats say dejoy has withhold from congress. Earlier this month, mr. Trump told voters in
North Carolina to vote twice, once in person and once by mail to test whether or not the system was fraudproof. He repeatd that request again this weekend on twitter, it drew a
Quick Response from
North Carolinas attorney general who told voters do not do what the president directs. With me now is
North Carolinas attorney general, josh stein. Mr. Attorney general, thank you very much for being here. Mail in your ballot and then go to your polling place and ask if your ballot has been counted if it has not been, the president say, then vote again. Wh i know that are democrats and republicans who are worried about their ballot will get back if they mail it back. Can you go to a polling place, ask that question and get answer . Its a completely unnecessary thing to do, because when you get your mailin ballot and by the way
North Carolina is the first state in the country to mail out absentee ballots and already 25,000 north carolinians have voted. But its unnecessary to go to the polling place to confirm because you can do that online, check on online, or theres an app that you can do through the state board of elections that will affirmatively text you your ballot status, in my case, i requested a mailin ballot and i got a request from the state board thats in the mail on the way to my home and i should expect it in the next week. What will you do if people show up at the polling place and demand if their vote has been counted . Its a waste of their time, first of all, it puts them at greater exposure to crowds, while the inperson voting is going to be place, theres going to be social distancing, sanitation and masks, so it will be a safe exercise, its just unnecessary. If folks are absolutely set on going to a polling place to confirm their ballot was received, just dont mail in your ballot, just go and vote, if youre going to be there anyway, vote in person during the 17 days of early voting we have here in
North Carolina or vote on election day at your precinct. Theres no reason to mail in your ballot if you know youre going to go to the voting place in person. How do you make sure they dont vote twice . We have protections against one casting two ballots. If your ballot is received youll be taken off the rolls. The danger is, when people have mailed in your ballot and it havent received yet, they go to the voting booth to vote again, because it hasnt been received at that point they have voted twice and voting twice is a crime in
North Carolina. The vote the mailin ballot will then be cast out, so it will not affect the election, its just that these voters, because the president s terrible advice, will have exposed themselves to criminal liability for no reason at all. Either vote in person or vote by mail. Dont do both. One other question when it comes to polling places, ive been talking a lot to some former officials surrounding whats going to happen on election day, and theyre concerned about intimidation at polling places, by some of the president s supporters who are worried about mailin ballots because the president after all has been saying, if he loses the only way he can lose is if the democrats have stolen the election from him, what precautions is the state of the
North Carolina taking to make sure that polling places are a free and safe place to vote . Absolutely, its critical that voters know that they can go there and be free of any hear rasment, any intimidation and our laws are strong about protecting the sanctity of voting locations, early voting sites or each precinct, we have precinct judges, witnesses, all of these people have a direct dialogue to local
Law Enforcement, so if theres anything that happens thats wrong it can be an
Immediate Response to ensure that any intimidation is immediately addressed. North
Carolina Attorney general josh stein, thank you so much for coming on and trying the make it clear to folks if you mail in your vote and vote at your polling place, you can subject to criminal prosecution.
