As he exited the white house he had a hand over his ear so he could hear. Take a look at what the president had to say. Were beginning to do something about it. Were going to make changes. I see congress wanting to act now for the first time. So we certainly have to strengthen background checks, everybody agrees with that. And were beginning to make background checks very very strong. Ill be speaking about that at cpac, very very important to do that. And also, the mentally ill, people that have mental problems, we cannot allow them to have guns. Were going to be very strong on that. Thats going to go a long way. I also believe that schools have to have some form of protection, they just cant be open i think gun free. Gun free is an invitation for these crazy people to come in and shoot. So the president there picked through some of what hes proposing as a solution to gun violence. Hes saying training armed teachers and raising bonuses for some of them. Raising the age limbs to 21 for paying ar15. He also want to ban bump shots. Strengthen background checks and open mental hospitals. People close to the president are getting mix signals about how serious he is about some of those proposals. Cpac will ask questions. We will be there. I want to go to gary. It looks like the lights have dimmed there at cpac, the president coming to the stage. We foe hell talk about guns. And immigration and new sanctions on north korea, right . Yeah thats right. We expect the president any minute now. The comments he made on the south lawn is a preview of what we expect him to say here today on guns. In part, read on the gun issue. When we declare or schools to be gunfree zones it puts our teachers at dangers. Well trained and gunadept teachers should be carrying firearms. Were hoping to keep guns out of hands of those who pose danger to themselves and to others. Thats in line of what the president has been saying in the last couple of days. Floating this ideas with trained teachers and coaches in the classroom. Something the nra embraced as well. The notion of keeping guns out of hand of people who shouldnt have them its part of th bipartisan bill to strengthen background checks. He will publicly announce of what the administration is calling their toughest and largest ever sanctions against north korea. More than 50 different ships and companies that were helping north korea evade sanctions. The president says i am announcing ha we are launching the largest ever set of new sanctions and sustain itself military by targeting 56 vessels, shipping companies and trade businesses. Theyre assisting north korea in evading sanctions. Halle, interesting time for that since the olympics is coming to a close. The president s daughter on the way there. This north korea issue has been quiet over the course of olympics, now i expect well see it flare back up. Garrett, if you can i want to get a sense of what its like in the room. The Steve Bannon Reince priebus buddy buddy hour and the president came out and through he talked about nafta, talked about the world, repealing and replacing obamacare and came off the media. It will be more red meat to a very very friendly audience. I think thats right, halle. This is the third one of these in a row that ive covered. Every year its shifted more towards donald trump and his policies. I wasnt here yesterday but the speakers this morning including rick perry, and secretary zanka has been been a little less indpref. This is a political conference, shaped and designed around the president and his agenda. And i dont have to tell you, a big part of that agenda has been going after the media and liberals. Laurie grant spoke earlier comparing liberals to her per piece her piece. Garrett, im going to comback to you. You can see that they have cleared the stage, it is just the lecturn there at p c, we expect the president there in a minute. I want to go to kelsey and ken who are joining me here on the set. Lets take another look at that stage, we know hes going to want to talk about him being a big believer, as he told me yesterday in the roosevelt room. Im a big believer for the nra, and youre ready to do battle with them. He said, i dont think its going to be a battle. Id like to see what the we think has to say about that. The nra hasnt responded so far. Yeah. I want to see what the congress has said about that. If they cant get to a place where they have unanimous consent. If they dont all agree to get on something, if someone wants to block this bill, one person can keep that from happening. I think there will be support for other things hes talking about. Bun stops, increasing the mental background check. Cpac, while it is sort of scene as seen as the ash for of what is conservator values. It is migrated to be sort of a pro trump event. That makes sense, hes the head of the party. Raising the age for purchases Assault Rifle is something that has been seen in the processes a year ago, because it has become this pro trump forum he might have a graelt audience. You know hes egger to get out there and talk to these folks. He love a Campaign Rally, which is what this is. Later on this afternoon at 2 00 eastern and 11 pacific, the president holding a joint use conference with the Prime Minister of australia, and australia pays into that gun debate. Thats a real controlled environment. You only get a certain number of questions. I think thats in part by the white house, it will control how much we can find out from him. Richard blooming that you all the democrat he said that it was in main we are going to play it and keep this live shot up so we can monitor cpac. Listen to what he had to say about one of the proposals here. Half cocked, harebrained, really toxic lunacy is how to describe the idea of arming 20 to 40 of all the teachers in this country. There are 3. 5 million teachers, that means 700,000 of them are going to be packing heat in their classrooms, what kind of message duds that send to students and what kind of Real Prevention does i provide. Its not just democrats like senator blooming that you all, marco rubio says this is not a good idea to put guns in the hands of teachers. Yeah. I asked the president , he said i will pay for federal funding for training. Yeah, the teachers union, the teachers themselves, a lot of opposition there. I think this is one example where the president has found something, even if he has potentially picking a fight for raising the age for purchases an assault record. This is something that they can get behind. The only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. Later on in the show were going to play some records between the n rrk a and trump. Its almost the same exact way that Wayne Lapierre hours earlier said the same thing from this stage at cpac. Reporter the president says something that seems to talk directly to his age line that draws away from his to get something in congress. It is his idea to try to pack in funding for arming teachers. Thats real continue verse sall. Less controversial gun messages that could get through congress. Its a packaging things we cant pass. Tim, chief correspondent for political magazine. Theres an interesting question as to what the white house will support. As Congress Gets back to town next week its going to be slap dunk to get any of this down. The house in its background checks tied that to a concealed division. Will john cornyn and chris murphy be able to get that to the floor . What are you hearing when Congress Gets back to town . Drs i think its very unlikely that the white house will convince House Republican leadership even if they did i think theyll have a hard time certain issues ultra that are just almost a nonstarter for a healthy chunk of the house. And gun control in general is one of them. A very difficult time and tim, we are looking now at the cpac teenage behind you there, matt she lop head of the eun cpac coming up. Hes going to introduce donald trump. Tim, how many cpacs have you begun been to . Im sorry say it again, halle. Is this like your fourth or no this is my 10th cpac. I want to talk about the which you eluded to here at the table. This is to become a very protrump audience. They will be very receptive to his message in probably about 45 seconds here. Thats right. And i think the evolution of cpac that weve seen from what was once more ideas and policydriven conference, thats always been a circus here, theres a lot of young peoplers and impersonators over the years. Your head has always been a serious idea driven aspect of cpac. It has morphed into Something Like a Campaign Rally extended from 2016 into 2017 now 2018. Do you feel that theres a difference between this cpac and last years . I think what was interesting was last year there had been sort of this accord nation of donald trump. In fact, there was a real incredible moment at the end of last years cpac when a pollster got on stage and he said, look, the conservative movement is donald trump, donald trump is the conservative movement. That was last years message in a bottle. I think this year we have taken that and advanced it a bit. You are going to hear very little, if any descent from trump or trumpians speakers that parade on the stage here. Tim i want you to stand by and im going to bring in ken and kelsey here. Coming now with the administration framing some of the toughest actions against texas just by the olympics is wrapping up in south korea. And as ivanka trump. Just landed in south korea. The allegation there will include north korea representation and we saw how that was uncomfortable for mike pence. The Vice President at the opening ceremonies. He was sitting in feet of the north korean sister and had an Awkward Exchange there as some people held up as a diplomatic embarrassism for the united states. Dont expect to see a lot offen gaugement between ivanka trump and north korea. This is an interesting thing to watch. Without having the ambassador there, who will speak for the united states. The president will talk about immigration, that is a topic that is an interesting one for this audience, tim, on the one hand you have the president very, sort of continued to be strong on the idea for his wall and protecting our border. But he also has said he wants a deal to protect dreamers. I wonder how you see that conversation playing out in the courtroom. Halle, its interesting that you raised that. I spoke to a couple of attendees yesterday, trying to get a fill for where people are in this point, in the second year of the trump administration. Almost to a person, when i asked for a criticism of trump certainly mentioned i know hes coming out. Im sorry i left you midsentence. Tim, thank you very much. Behind you, donald trump is walking out on stage, shaking hands with the organizationer of cpac, a very strong supporter of donald trump. His wife works in the Communication Office over in the weve wing. Were going to listen in to the president s remarks, not far from where we are right now in washington, d. C. Lets listen in to what President Trump has to say. Lots of different topic he will be discussing, including the gun debate happening right now in this country after last weeks shooting in florida. The president in front of a very receptive crowds of conservators. Thank you very much. Thank you even. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you very much. Thank you, matt for that great destructi introduction. Thank you for this big crowd its incredible. Weve come a long way together. Im thrilled to be back at cpac with some of my wonderful friends, amazing supporters and proud conservators. Remember when i first started running, because i wasnt a politician, fortunately. But, remember when i started running people would say, do you think hes a conservative. I think i proved that im a conservative right . For more than four decades this event as served as a forum for some of our top leaders. Year after year leaders have stood in this stage to discuss what we can do together to protect our heritage, to promote our culture and defend our freedom. Cpac has always been about big ideas, and its also been about putting those ideas into action, and cpac really has put a lot of ideas into action. Well talk about some of them this morning. For the last year with your help, we have put more great conservative ideas into use than perhaps ever before in american history. Right . By the way, what a nice picture that is, look at that. I love to watch that guy speak. Thats love. Oh, i try like hell to hide that bald spot folks. I work hard. Doesnt look bad, hey, were hanging in there. Were hanging in there, right, together were hanging in. Weve confirmed a Record Number, so important of Circuit Court judges, and we are going to be putting in a lot more. And they will interpret the law as written. And weve confirmed an incredible new Supreme Court justice, a great man, neal gorsuch. Right . Weve passed massive, biggest in history, tax cuts and reforms. I dont use the word reform, there was a lot of reform too, very positive, i dont use it. When we were first using it i told everybody, everybody gathered, just talk about tax cuts. People dont know what reform mean. They think reform might mean going up. And i said do tax cuts. [chanting] thank you. How did he get in here, matt . Boy, okay. Just for the media, the fake news back there. They took very good care of him, they were very gentle, she was very obnoxious. It was only one person. So we have thousands of people here. So, listen, tomorrow the headline will be, protesters disturb one person folks, doesnt deserve a mention, doesnt deserve a headline. The headline tomorrow, disrupters of cpac and he was very nice. We looked at him and he left, okay. Now, ive had it too often. Youll have one person and you can hardly even hear. In fact, the biggest disturbance are you people, hell Say Something and nobody hears him, and then the crowd will start screaming at him and then all of a sudden, we stop. And thats okay. You have to show your spirit right . You have to show you spirit. Its true. So, we passed the biggest tax cuts in the hor of our country and it was called tax cut and reform. And i said to our people, dont use the word reform. I said, no wonder for 45 years nothings been passed, because people want tax cuts and they didnt foe what reform means. Reform could mean you got to pay more tax. So i convinced politicians whose done this all their lives, and theyve done a good job, but they were going the Tax Reform Act of whatever year we want to put. Okay. So they have the Tax Reform Act and that was it. And now it was called the tax act, tax cut act and jobs. We got to add jobs into it. Because were picking up tremendous number of jobs, 2. 7 million jobs. 2. 7. So so now people here tax cuts and it has been popular. Remember it started off a little slow, but it got passed. We got some great help. I will say we got some great help in the senate and house. We have some guys here today we have congressmen and a lot of senators. We got it pass. It wasnt easy. We didnt have one democrat vote. I know thats going to cost them in the mid terms. Whoever reason the presidency theyre beginning to have a disadvantage in the midterms. You know what happens, im trying to figure out, historically if you win the presidency you dont have good years later. We cant let that happen. Its just happened statistically all the time for many years. What happens is you fight so hard to win the presidency, you fight, fight, fight. And now only two years, thats a very short period, and by the time you start campaigning thats a year, now you got to go and fight again but you just won. So nobody has that same drive that you have. So you end up not doing that well, because the other side theyre crazed. By the way theyre crazed any way, they had people, they are really crazed. Right . So, you know i kept trying to say, why is this but its just there. So, the great enthusiasm, youre sitting back, youre watching television, maybe i dont have to vote today, we just won the presidency. And then we get clobbered and we cant let that happen. We get clobbered in 18 and we cant let that happen. Were so happy, weve passed sod many things. My administration, i think has had the most successful first year in the history of the presidency. I really believe that. I really believe it. I really believe it. So, i mean, judges, regulations, everything. And the beautiful thing, the beautiful thing about the tax cuts is nobody thought we could do it. Because, again we had to get 100 of the vote and nobody thought we could do it. And frankly, to me, we got it and its turned out to be the most popular things. And by the way, for the republicans in this room, of which i assume, would you say is it 99 matter or 100 . I would hope it close to you know what, we probably want to have some democrats to come over, we had the great governor that left the democratic party, big jim, and he came over to the republican party. So so, people are sitting there and they say, we just had that great victory, lets not vote, lets go to the movie, a republican party, were doing great and they end up losing. So you got to keep up the enthusiasm. If they lose, and then you have the president ial election coming up again, and you clobber them because everybody gets off that have ass and they get out and they work, right if and they work, and they work and work and work. And you end up winning the presidency again. And hopefully were going to do that very easily. But never, never we have to weir, right now we have a big race coming up in 18. You have to get out. Get that enthusiasm, keep it going. See the word really is come place sent. Its a natural instinct. You just won, youre happy and complacent. Dont be complacent. If they get in they will repeal your tax cuts. They will put judges in that you wouldnt believe. Theyll take away your Second Amendment, which we will never allow it to happen. Theyll take away your Second Amendment. [ cheers and applause ] remember that, they will take away thank you, they will take away those massive tax cuts and they will take away your Second Amendment. By the way, if you only had a chance of one what would you rather have, the Second Amendment or tax cuts . Go ahead. Second amendment. Tax cuts. Second amendment. Im going to leave it at that Se
