Joining us from london with more on this, nbc newss matt bradley. What do we know . Reporter this is really an evolving situation. What weve heard so far from the u. S. Military and this is in a statement that a combined u. S. And afghan force conducting an operation in nan ga har proch province was engaged by direct fire. We are assessing the situation and will provide further updates as they become available. Thats what weve gotten officially from the u. S. Military. A New York Times correspondent in afghanistan, he said that this might be what you would call a green on blue incident, and thats one in which Afghan Soldiers fire upon american troops, and of course weve seen this a lot in what has now become rekrercently americas longest war, the longest in history. This New York Times correspondent said there may be as many as five or six fatalities. None of this has been verified independently by nbc news except for that statement from the u. S. Government saying that u. S. Soldiers had engaged in enemy fire. Were trying to get all that information right now nailed down. This comes at really difficult moment for u. S. Forces in afghanistan because, you know, these sorts of green on blue incidents, theyve happened a lot, as i just mentioned. And you know, this comes during a particularly tough period because the Trump Administration has been trying again and again really for the best part of a year in on again off again negotiations with the taliban. The primary u. S. Enemy in afghanistan that would try to come to an agreement to allow u. S. Troops to leave once and for all. The Trump Administration is so used to reducing the number of troops in afghanistan that theyre trying to go down to as low as 8,600 even if there isnt a deal with the taliban. Thats quite a big reduction. Theres still 12,000 to 13,000 u. S. Troops in afghanistan. It looks as though the taliban couldnt be more anxious for those troops to leave. Richard. The breaking news matt bradley out of london with u. S. And Afghan Forces engaging fire. We will go back to you if we get more information. Thank you for that reporting. Also this hour, more breaking news in thailand to tell you about where a soldier is still on the loose after killing at least 20 people in a shooting rampage at a mall. Shots were fired in multiple locations across a northeastern thai city during a busy saturday. Local police say it started when the suspect shot dead another soldier and a woman at a military barracks. That suspect then escaped in a humvee and opened fire at a number of different locations around the city. Investigators believe the attack may be tied to a dispute over a land deal payment. Police have issued a wanted poster with details. Well continue to follow both of these breaking news stories right here on msnbc. Also today, right now straight to the to 2020 race, lots of energy across New Hampshire right now with three days to go until the crucial democratic primary, and the president ial candidates are fighting for every last vote. The latest nbc marist poll showing Bernie Sanders leading the pack in New Hampshire with 25 of the vote. Pete buttigieg falling closely behind with 21, warren and biden falling in third and fourth place. Were going to start with Vaughn Hillyard with the Buttigieg Campaign. How is the candidate reacting to how his front runner status has evolved, and this after last nights debate . Last night debate up on stage down the road over in manchester, but really the news out of today is the fact were three days out from the New Hampshire primary, and nbc just put up polling just yesterday showing Bernie Sanders in the lead here in New Hampshire, but Pete Buttigieg in second place which after an iowa caucus victory is big news for the former south bend mayor, especially because of where joe bidens positioning in that same poll shows the former Vice President. Of course, he lost by a good margin in iowa, and now he, as you heard on the debate stage last night, suggesting and essentially lowering the expectation that he does not expect to finish off well here on tuesday night. And that is where just in the last two hours the Biden Campaign put up an ad online in which i actually talked with our mike memoli, we were trying to figure out a way to best characterize it, the word mike used was snarky. I would use the word dismissive of Pete Buttigiegs time as south bend mayor. Putting the two records of those individuals against one another. The former Vice President joe biden was in washington, d. C. , Pete Buttigieg was in south bend making the case in this ad that, well, joe biden was working to pass obamacare, Pete Buttigieg was focused on putting Pretty Lights on a bridge in south bend and fixing sidewalks in south bend, and at the end of this ad, it says were electing a president making the case what youve done matters. Which that is joe biden here st not only not performing well in iowa but also concerns about what happens from here going out. Vaughn hillyard, the latest there with Pete Buttigieg and his campaign, with ali vitali with senator Amy Klobuchars cam pain. You were on last night, a lot of the zest postdebate was Amy Klobuchar had a good night. Thats true, and weve seen her on debate stages frank try to figure out how to bring the percent she has on the campaign trail to the debate stage. In this case pitching herself to New Hampshire voters specifically. Her campaign has said theyve raised 2 million since she got off the debate stage. For a candidate like Amy Klobuchar thats money thats going to be really important. Whats going to happen after New Hampshire, whether she does well here or not, is shes going to move on to nevada, South Carolina, and quickly after that super tuesday, other campaigns, Elizabeth Warren and certainly Michael Bloomberg have been able to build out over the course of the last few months in those states, putting staffers on the ground. That takes money and resources, thats something the Klobuchar Campaign has 2 million more of after the debate last night. Theyre going to need it if the theory of the case is stay in long enough for voters to be able to consider her once the field has winnowed. Shes making a pitch here today thats, yes, for democratic voters but also for the more moderate independent leaning voters in New Hampshire who can also vote here. Listen to what she said to this town hall behind me in a frankly, packed room. Listen. It is that fired up Democratic Base, but it is also bringing in independents and moderate republicans like this guy up in conway when we had a long line of voters and they had little stickers on. They said happy stickers im a reproductive rights voter. I am a Climate Change voter, im a Supreme Court voter. And this guy comes up with a brown jacket, doesnt have a sticker on. I say sir, you dont have a sticker on. He says, thats because i was a trump voter, and we dont have stickers here, and he said but i dont want my neighbors to know. They dont know, but i did that, so dont say anything. But im not doing it again. And richard, Amy Klobuchar one of those people trying to make a really big tent argument for herself as the potential standard bearer of the Democratic Party. Why that matters here in New Hampshire, of all the registered voters in the state 42 are undeclared to a party. Thats why shes looking to reach out to the Democratic Base but also the independents who do skew a little bit more moderate. Richard. Ali vitali, appreciate that. Lets head over to the veterans day campaign. Fighting to keep the poll numbers in a state that borders his own. Shaq brewster on the Sanders Campaign, and i guess the word, socialism. Thats exactly right. Senator sanders feels good about how he did in the debate performance. Im a little distracted. Hes walking out to address this overflow crowd in rochester New Hampshire. People waiting very early to see him. Thats the momentum that the campaign is trying to highlight. They feel like if you look at the polls, first the average of polls coming into New Hampshire. He had a strong lead. Recent polls show him with another lead. Thats what the campaign is trying to highlight. What you hear from senator sanders is not holding back. This morning he did a canvas launch. Hes getting his volunteers, mobilizing his volunteers to go knock on doors. He mentioned mayor bloomberg, he said hes fine with him running for president , but he doesnt like how hes fineist funst we have candidates who have in some cases raised substantial sums of money from over 40 billionaires, billionaires by the dozens are contributing to the Pete Buttigieg campaign. Now, i like pete. Hes a smart guy. Hes a nice guy, but if you are serious about political change in america, that change is not going to be coming from somebody who gets a lot of money from the ceos of the pharmaceutical industry. Reporter and senator sanders as i mentioned, he has a town hall here just a couple of minutes. One thing, i spoke to the state director and one thing theyre highlighting and the reason why theyre feeling good is the amount of doors theyre knocking on here in this state. Theyre averaging knocking on one door a second, with all the volunteers they have here on the ground. Its not just the Television Ads. Its not just the staff on the ground, they feel like they have movement and some momentw men t lets go over to former Vice President joe bidens campaign. He admitting his campaign, well, theyre facing some struggles. In the last few days youve been saying that democrats would be taking too big a risk if they nominate senator sanders or mayor buttigieg, but they came out on top in iowa. What risk did the Iowa Democrats miss . They didnt miss anything. This is a long race. I took a hit in iowa, and ill probably take a hit here. Nbcs mike memoli on the trail with biden today in New Hampshire. He joined us live, and you know, mike we were talking with vaughn a second ago about a new ad coming out and how the Vice President is handling not being the front runner, at least in these two states. Yeah, richard, its so interesting because in the earliest days of the Biden Campaign, he did nothing but warn democrats about what he called a circular firing squad. He said explicitly that he was not going to say anything negative about a fellow democrat. What weve seen after that gut punch that biden talked about that he received in iowa, hes now launched a twofront war against Bernie Sanders warning about what it would mean to have a selfdescribed democratic socialist at the top of the ticket but also against Pete Buttigieg warning pant what it would mean to nominate someone whose only experience is a mayor of a small city. South bends population is smaller even than manchester, New Hampshire. Those attacks have gotten more directed and more pointed with each passing day. Lets take a look at that video the Biden Campaign launched today making that argument taking it even further. Barack obama called joe biden. The best Vice President americas ever had. But Pete Buttigieg doesnt think much of the Vice President s record. Lets compare. When president obama called on him, joe biden helped lead the passage of the Affordable Care a act, which gave health care to 20 Million People. And when park goers called on Pete Buttigieg, he installed decorative lights under bridges giving citizens of south bend colorfully illuminated bridges. Joe biden just finished speaking in the last hour. He went on in person to go further with his attacks on mayor Pete Buttigieg. Looking ahead to super tuesday and the South Carolina are primary saying democrats cant nominate somebody who doesnt have an appeal to africanAmerican Voters. He said hes shown he knows how to earn their support. He has earned it in his career, and hes the one who can do this going forward. Mike memoli, thank you so much there with the joe Biden Campaign. Coming up later on msnbc, my colleague, Alicia Menendez anchors coverage live, 4 00 p. M. And 6 00 p. M. Were going to turn to fallout from President Trumps medical treatment acquittal by the u. S. Senate. The president is tweeting about Lieutenant ColonelAlexander Vindman who testified in the houses impeachment inquiry. The president writing vindmans rank in quotation marks as if to call that into question. Vindmans testimony led to President Trump removing him from his job at the white house and reassigning him to the pentagon. President trump has also recalled u. S. Ambassador to the eu Gordon Sondland for his testimony all in one day on a friday. Consider that as you listen to this moment from a few months ago during vindmans appearance before house lawmakers. Dad, im sitting here today in the u. S. Capitol talking to our elected professionals, talking to our elected approximatals is proof that you made t officials is proof you made the right decision 40 years ago in search of a better life for our family. Do not worry, i will be fine for telling the truth. Nbc news correspondent hans nichols is at the white house with more on what moves the president is making against those who testified against him. And hans, i guess if youre a viewer, the first question is always why . Reporter well, the president is in defensive mode this morning. Hes explaining why he did this, and hes basically calling vindman insubordinate. Hes gone on to say he was getting bad reviews and he was known for leaking and that is why hes out. Thats the president s version of events. Weve heard from vindmans attorney moments ago. He put out a statement and said the president this morning made a series of obviously false statements concerning colonel vindman. They conflict with the personnel record and the entirety of the impeachment record of which the president is well aware. You have this back and forth from the attorney as well as the president. Who we havent heard from and who were unlikely to hear from is Alexander Vindman himself because he is still a member of the military, so Lieutenant Colonel in the army. Hes been reassigned. He is unlikely to speak out against his chain of command in all of this. Guys. All right, nbcs hans nichols for us at the white house. Thank you so much, hans. A u. S. Citizen in china has become the First American to die from the coronavirus. The 60yearold american died thursday at a hospital in wuhan province. That is the epicenter of the viral outbreak. That happening on friday morning. Nbc news correspondent Erin Mclaughlin is in newark, new jersey, for us this hour. Explain for us what happened when that cruise docked there in new jersey, and what is the latest on the passengers and what weve learned so far . Hey, richard, well, anthem of the seas docked here in new jersey yesterday, four passengers chinese nationals were escorted off of the cruise liner by medical personnel and brought here.
