The truth is truth. I dont mean to no, it isnt truth. Truth isnt truth. And then the president on twitter today out bashing a new report about White House Counsel Don Mcgahn cooperating with the mueller inquiry, a story the president already confirmed. All right. Lets go to geoff bennett, nancy cook, caitlyn huey burns, and guy lewis, a former u. S. Attorney. Geoff, we have more revelations on this sunday as well as the president reacting to the headlines that spewed over from yesterday in that New York Times article. What is he saying today . Among the many revelations included in that New York Times report is that the president wasnt fully aware of the extent to which the White House Counsel Don Mcgahn was cooperating with Robert Muellers team of investigators. While the president tried to counter that today in a series of tweets, one he says, i allowed White House Counsel Don Mcgahn to fully cooperate with the special counsel. He also attacked the New York Times for implying, the president says, that don mcgahn turned on him. The president says the failing New York Times wrote a fake piece today implying he must be a john dean type rat. Well, any student of history or viewers of a certain age might remember that john dean is the nixonera white House Counsel who ultimately flipped on the then president and helped brought nixon down in the watergate coverup. Interesting choice of words for President Trump to refer to, dean as a rat for cooperating with law enforcement. In another tweet the president says mueller and his gang make Joseph Mccarthy look like a baby. He is invoking the 1950s anticommunist crusade by the former senator Joseph Mccarthy, which of course was a stain on the modern political era. The president trying to make his case here that don mcgahn offered no incriminating information and that his cooperation with the special counsel wont pose a problem for the president. We, of course, dont know that to be true yet. We are still looking into that reporting coming out of the New York Times. Nancy cook, geoff, your colleague at the white house, setting it up for us, giving us good background. There is also what was said by the president s top lawyer, and that is truth isnt truth. We knew when we heard it on meet the press it was going to be a meme. What did he mean here, nancy . Well, i think that Rudy Giuliani a lot of times goes on tv and basically just says a lot of Different Things to a lot of different people. I think thats part of a strategy to sort of scramble the jets on every news story that comes out of the russia investigation and sort of create a sense of confusion and then deflect from the real story, which is that its a huge deal that the white houses top attorney don mcgahn is cooperating with mueller and has sat down for 30 hours. He has been in the oval office and behind the scenes for all of these major decisions that the president has made, including the firing of mike flynn, the firing of fbi director james comey, and he can really give the special investigators a roadmap and a sense as to the president s thinking on these issues, what he said, what he was thinking, what went into it, and i think that giuliani is just trying to distract that and sort of make this broad argument about truth, you know, just a deflection from the real story. Caitlyn, mayor giuliani indicated the article we have been following for the last 24 hours from the New York Times, this again on mcgahn, 30 hours, right, three separate interviews over some nine months speaking with mueller. Its the question of extent that mcgahn might be having exposure to the special counsel. Well, today giuliani saying, guess what . It was Robert Mueller who probably leaked the information to the New York Times. Thats a pretty serious accusation for a person who i dont know when is the last time we heard him in public. Consider that don mcgahn is the white House Counsel. He is not Donald Trumps personal attorney. Nancy is absolutely right to note exactly what don mcgahn might have been privy to, what he has seen over the course of this year and a half, and also what his own interests are to protect himself and protect the office of the white house. So we dont know the extent of those many, many hours of conversations. We do know, however, that the president is reacting to this in real time, continuing to voice frustrations about the special counsel investigation as a whole, and then wondering what this might prompt him to do even further as this story hangs out there. The story hanging out there at the moment, guy s the question of obstruction. That was the focus of this more than 2,000 word report we are still looking into today. The issue of collusion was not brought up in the article nor the issue of conspiracy, but john brennan, former cia director, today did allude to those two items on meet the press. Well listen to that first. You have gone farther than most on collusion. You have gone farther than most on conspiracy. Is this no, conspiracy, chuck, i said collusion is in plain sight. The things that have come out, the individuals who already have admitted to wrongdoing, these are things with the russians, and this is what speaks to collusion. Guy lewis, as a former u. S. Attorney and you have obviously followed the conversation about the mcgahn reporting, speaking with Robert Mueller, there is also john brennan with the accusations of collusion as well as obstruction, at least in his commentary so far. Whats your reflection . Its extraordinary, richard, for a lawyer within the white house who has inside information, personal access to, speaks to regularly, sat through all these meetings, that that lawyer himself is now a witness to the probe. Look, it could be something either really, really bad where the president says, look, these are the reasons that im going to fire him. I dont care what the truth is. Or, or frankly, it could be very, very good, that the president went down a list and said, these are why why i dont like comey, these are why flynn needs to be fired. The inner thinking of the president s occurring in real time with his may not be his personal lawyer, but certainly its a lawyer inside the white house who is charged with helping the president make these decisions. Guy, we dont know exactly, as has been said by the panel so far, what was discussed in these 30 hours in meetings in nine months. All things being equal, based on your experience as a former u. S. Attorney, is it probable that this openbook policy, this openbook approach that john dowd started, if you will, and by the way he did call this New York Times report fictitious and fiction, although now giuliani is saying now that, no, this did happen. So they are not on the same page, shall we say. All things being equal to you, do you believe at the end of the day any discussions that may have been had abouten helpful for President Trump . Its fascinating, richard. If they did sit down for 30 hours, i mean, think about it. The last time youve interviewed somebody for 30 hours. I mean, there is a lot of information thats going back and forth. A lot of questions. You got it. And a lot of documents, information, everything thats being conveyed. So even if from the president s side he is going to pick out a few choice questions and answers, but the danger, the real danger and the reason why im very uncomfortable, if i was the president s lawyer with this openbook scenario, is bob mueller and his group are going to do just the same. Richard, they are going to pick out a dozen, 20 questions and answers thats going to support their theory for obstruction of justice, and therein lies the risk and the danger. Well, also at risk is director john brennan. He has faced criticism after his interview with Rachel Maddow on friday fridand then here on me the press. He was facing many issues. Why should he be in front of the camera, number one. Number two, the claim about short of treason. This is related to the president. This is how he defended himself. Well listen to that. I called his behavior treasonous, which is to betray ones trust and aid and abet the enemy and i stand very much by that claim. You are the former cia director accusing the sitting president. United states. Its not a private citizen. Accusing the president of the United States of treason. Thats monday thats a monumental accusation. I have seen the lights brinking red in terms of what mr. Trump has done and is doing and is bringing this country down. Geoff bennett, although he is very respected, director john brennan, former cia director, lots of criticism in the beltway about what he is doing and how he might be affecting the hue of the intelligence community. The president take refuge in a talking point that was offered up by richard burr, the republican head of the Senate Intelligence committee. Burrs point was if john brennan had any misgivings, he should have made this known some time ago. Brennan makes the point what he is referring to is activity in the public view. Of course, the fact that don jr. And the top echelon of the campaign met with that russian lawyer. The president s behavior in the helsinki summit. One he said in the interview with chuck todd that i was particularly interested in is the potential for retaliatory legal action. Remember, there are some 13 guidelines that set out whether or not someones security clearance should be reviewed or revoked. Saying negative things about the president is not one of these criteria. Lawyers have reached out to him about taking potential legal action. I will pay close attention to that. Caitlyn, the statement by the president today about again whats happening today brings he brought it up. Joe mccarthy is what the president is making the comparison of today and mule. Mueller. Startling especially since they share a common ally in roy cohen. The president is clearly ruffled and interested in this investigation. He comments on it every day it seems. The past week we have seen multiple tweets coming from this president about this specific issue, and again because this investigation is ongoing, because of the scope of it not only in terms of russian meddling and the question of collusion, but also the question of obstruction of justice, what he is doing, what he has done, all of these raise more questions that we dont have the answers to yet about how this all ends up. Okay. Thank you so much. Great way to start this hour. Have a good sunday. On the attack. Former white house aide omarosa Manigault Newman appeared on Msnbcs Politicsnation just this morning to share her reooactiono the number of public attacks from President Trump. After the release of her book unhinged where she goes into details about her struggles at the white house, President Trump fired off a bunch of tweets. How did you feel when you saw the president call you a low life and a dog after you had taken all of these arrows for him . You know, when he called me that dog i thought that it was clear evidence, one, that he has absolutely no respect for the presidency. It was such a vulgar slur. And can you just imagine if he would say that publicly . What is he saying about me and other africanamericans privately . But just really it makes the point that donald trump is not equipped to serve in the role that he is in. In fact, i would say he is unfit to serve as the president of the United States. Joining us now, democratic strategist adrian elrod, tim carney, former george h. W. Bush aide and republican strategist joe watkins. Joe, lets start with what has been said in the headline out of the interview this morning that is new. She is calling the president racist. You heard her reaction to being called low life as well as a dog. Those are tough charges. Omarosa has fired big shots at the president , at the white house, and they are hard charges because after all she was the president s top africanamerican advisor at the white house. Somebody close to him for a long time. She has a 15year history with him. These charges interest her are very, very serious. As long as the white house doesnt have any africanamericans in senior positions in the inner circle of the white house, they are going to be exposed. These are very serious charges coming from omarosa Manigault Newman today. Adrian, as we know, omarosa very serious charges, but also reversal from statements that she has made previous to these recent interviews. Yeah. Look, i think there is a lot of reputation building going on here with omarosa trying to, you know, sort of reinstate herself in the Africanamerican Community in terms of being a credible spokesperson. But look, i dont think that you need omarosa going out there and telling us all that donald trump is racist. We know that. His presidency has been largely indicative of his racist comments. He has criticized Maxine Waters by calling her low iq maxine. He criticized lebron james. We know how he handled the charlottesville situation. Of course, during the campaign he criticized mexican immigrants as being rapists. So this is not new to us. I dont think that we need some sort of tape of him using the n word or a derogatory term to describe africanamericans to know where he stands. A common headline at least in the notes and in the papers in the beltway here, tim, that you are aware of, all of us are aware of because we read them, where is the check and balance to ethical behavior. Then the fingers go to congress, then to the party in control. Where are the leaders in the gop that might then go to the president and say, hey, hang on a second, this is not the way to conduct business if you sit in that big white house . Well, one of the problems is, is we knew what we were getting when trump was elected. Frankly, of all the people who knew, omarosa, who has known him well, who was on that show, what, three seasons, knew very well. I take with a grain of salt, oh, i was surprised. She knew who she was when she helped him win. A lot of republicans were opposing him when omarosa was helping him and they have tried so many times. One thing you are never going to do is get donald trump to behave in a manner that most of us would consider fitting for the white house. He is, you know, as old as he is, if he is still acting like a child, no slap on the wrist or anything from either the speaker, any of the republican senators is going to get him to shape up. One of the reasons i think you see republicans being quiet and rolling their eyes and dodging questions on this is nothing they will do will make donald trump act like a grownup, so they are not going to try. It seemed like there may have been an attempt, tim. I will play a little bit more of the conversation from this morning when omarosa, she turned up the boiler a little bit in this commentary. Take a listen. I am fully cooperate rating with them. I will turn over all of the things. I will turn over additional things that i have discovered as i have gone through the two years on the campaign. I am here and willing to serve and continue the dialogue that i started with them this spring. She started that dialogue. It sounds like she is going to be cooperative, she has been approached once. The turning up the boiler commentary, i will get with that in a moment. We will go with this cooperation statement she made. Joe, it appears she has been tapped on the shoulder and that she maybe wants to be tapped and the shoulder again by the special counsel here. I think she does, richard. After all, she says she has an arsenal of maybe a couple hundred tapes and other evidence of her time in the Trump Campaign, the Trump White House that she cant wait to use, and i think she is very, very willing to be used by the Mueller Investigation in any way she can to further support her claims against the president. So, adrian, should at this point, Rudy Giuliani and the president , and weve asked the question because we continue to get that drip, drip, drip from omarosa Manigault Newman so far. Is that concern, do you think, growing in intensity as she continues to take to the airwaves . Of course it is. You can see the Trump Administration is completely panicked right now. Of course, President Trump himself is panicked given his multitude of tweets he issued this morning and over the weekend since omarosa has been talking. So i thi
