Contenders is showing its first signs of breaking up. Two new polls now taken after last weeks debates, one from cnn finds two candidates cutting into bidens doubledigit lead, Kamala Harris and Elizabeth Warren making strong gains. Paris moving into second place. Were seeing Similar Movement in a poll of iowa voters from a brandnew usa today in Suffolk University poll thats just out. We get details now from nbc news road warrior. Mark leibovich, chief National Correspondent for the washington times. Former democratic congresswoman Donna Edwards, and contributing columnist for the Washington Post is with me, and so is david jolly who is also an msnbc political contributor. A big thanks to all of you. Shaq, ill start with you on the ground. Youre with mayor pete. What are you hearing from that campaign somewhat do we expect to hear from the candidate this hour . Well, hell be taking the staining here ju stage here in a couple minutes. I spoke to a lot of people as they were coming in and they are saying that he will make an appeal to the black Business Owners hell be speaking to today. But as i was talking to people filing in, many of them were unfamiliar with mayor pete and even if they knew his name they were unfamiliar or didnt have a strong opinion of him either way which speaks to the mixed indicators were seeing. On one hand we saw the Strong Fundraising numbers, 25 million, but on other hand you have those stagnate poll numbers. His numbers that are not moving nip where, 4 in the latest poll and particularly among African Americans, barely registering to some effect. We spoke to him a little bit earlier today. He took some questions from reporters. Listen to what he said when we asked him about that point pot. Look, when youre new on the scene and youre not from a community of color, you got to work much harder in order to earn that trust. Because trust is largely a function of quantity time. Im committed to doing that work. But i think the most important question is will our policy benefit black merps and all americans . And if that happens and if i can show that, i think the politics will start to take cavre of themselves. And hes dealing with that contentious officerinvolved shooting in south bend, indiana. He was asked about that and reverend Jesse Jackson who was at that press conference said hes handling the situation well with the transparency that hes showing. Its something thats taken him off the trail hes had to deal with that. But today he will talk and not only naengs shooting, but hell go a little bit beyond that and talk about his socalled dug blas plan for black america. Hes going to talk about his plan to reform how Credit Scores are calculated, his plan to increase the amount of federal contracts that minorityowned businesses have access to. Hes going to hit everything from criminal Justice Reform to blam empowerment. Its supposed to be a speech directly targeting African Americans here in chicago. Craig. All right. Hes using i had golf announcing voice because hes a few feet away from where pete is going to be speaking moment now in chicago. Donna, let me turn to you. Your colleague at the Washington Post wrote recently, quote, in part whether it comes to connecting with voters, buttigiegs difficulty reaching African Americans remains arguably his worst problem. Iowa and New Hampshire are overwhelmingly white providing him with a more successful electorate in his first two contest. But a democrat who cannot win africanamericans votes is highly unlikely to win the nomination. How does mayor pete beauttigieg raise his favor ability among black voters and even introducing himself to black voters . I think its really tough, especially when your first entree is dealing with a policeinvolved shooting in south bend, indiana. I dont think its impossible. Ive said all along that all of the candidates need to start speaking with black voters from the beginning if they hope to win the nomination. And that is certainly true for mayor pete. Look, today is a good step for him to be in front of a black audience, in front of black Business Leaders really talking to them not just about where hes been, but where he hopes to be and how he sees his presidency in terms of black voters. But hes got a lot of ground to make up. I notice, for example, Elizabeth Warren has made tremendous ground with africanamerican voters if you look at these polls. Kamala harris has also gained. Of course joe biden has still a very strong hold on africanamerican voters. David, lets talk money here. Weve got some brandnew fundraising numbers in for the second indicator. Senator Bernie Sanders just announcing that he has raised 24 million. We learned last night that mayor Pete Buttigieg raised 24. 8 million. Are we seeing a shift, a dramatic shift here or are remaking too much of the fundraising numbers . I think the shift is less in t public opinion, although money does reflect some of that. And mayor petes numbers cover his cinderella rise, if you will. What it means for a candidate with those types of resources is they now have money for infrastructure and advertising. I think where you see the separation within the democratic field right now is you see people like sanders, mayor pete, senator harris, biden and Elizabeth Warren who will have the resources and frankly the polls to back them up that will get them through iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina. Now voters are going to have a big impact on who goes on from there. Theres only three or four tickets coming out of those three states, maybe throw in nevada. To donnas point, mayor pete will do fine with infrastructure and resources in iowa, New Hampshire, likely do very well. The Inflection Point for him will be South Carolina. If he cannot put himself in a Competitive Position in a state in south caroli like South Carolina, then it probably dims for him from there. What matters more, is polls . Is it cash . Well, i mean, its both. I mean, thats not really an answer. But, yeah, its cash is an indicator of your seriousness, of your staying power. But also you do need to get votes. And after New Hampshire and iowa, i mean, as you mentioned david, South Carolina is where mayor petes going to have to make some stand. Look, the majority of democratic voters in South Carolina are african american, as weve talked about. This has been a challenging area for mayor pete especially given the events in south bend around the officerinvolved shooting a few weeks ago. So he has a lot of end roads to make. But theres a shortterm and a Long Term Benefit to great fundraising numbers. The shortterm is you get good stories out of it. Theres a good couple of days of press. You show mow nent meant tomb, draw other supporters in, other donors in and the long term you will have money to put yourself on television and do infrastructure Going Forward in the say long game theyre both playing. Well see if the voters agree. Lets talk about this headline that you wrote a couple weeks ago. 23 democrats are running for president. Do any of them know what theyre doing . Since you wrote that piece weve had the debates, weve learned a bit more about where these candidates stand. Whats your assessment now . Do any of them know what theyre doing . Well, look, every campaign is organic. Every campaign is defined partly by the one that came before it. I think to some degree democrats are still trying to get their heads around the impact of donald trump winning last time and just what everything from 2016 means. I think thats one of the rare elections thats going to loom over the heads of a party longer than it normally would. But, look, given the fact that we have such a divisive incumbent, very unpopular among democrats and also given that there are so many candidates in the field and in social media just keeps having a bigger and bigger impact, youre really making it up as you go along more than you usually do. And i think this campaign reflects that. Because theres a lot of sort of throwing stuff against a wall and seeing what sticks and think were get an early indication of what might work and what might not. Lets talk about one of these new polls thats out. One of them focuses on just iowa. And in that poll, Kamala Harris saw her support more than double compared to the june poll from 7 to 16 . And then theres this new cnn poll as well it shows former Vice President joe bide wn with 10 drop since last poll, Bernie Sanders 4 drop. Beneficiaries senator harris picking up 9 points, Elizabeth Warren picking up 8 points. How serious should we be taking these polls at all in the early stage of the campaign, david . It is early but i think very seriously. Because what you often see in president ial campaigns is that top tier usually sticks together, if you will. In 08 the democrats had hillary, barack obama, john edwards and from early on stayed many that top tier until ultimately barack obama bested the other two competitors. And we saw that in the 08 republican primary as well with romney and mccain and huckabee and others. What you will see, though, i believe, is somebody will fall out of that tier. And you will would have to ask right now would it be joe biden . Going into 2008 rude jewel was the presumption favorite on the republican side. Huckabee won iowa, mccain won New Hampshire, giuliani wound up without a delegate. Somebody will fall out. But for the most part this top tier will move from iowa into New Hampshire and well see from there. Donna, tim alberta assessing the democratic parties goal of retaking the white house here, overcoming 2016, writing in politico in paint the unifying objective of defeating trump in 2020 likely wont be sufficient to wart off what everyone now believes will be a long, divisive primary and a lot of folks are surmising that we got a bit of a glimpse into what that primarys going to look like over the last few months at the debate last week in miami. What effect what a long, divisive primary have on the future nominee . Well, think its going to make the eventual nominee tougher for the fight against donald trump. You dont think to it weakens the presumptive nominee at all . I think that this is a really important fight for democrats to have right now. It is about its both about defeating donald trump, but also about a vision for the country. And i think that the democrat who can marry those two and come out on top is going to be the one whos really tough for the fight in november 2020. Look, it should be expected that this field is going to narrow. That may come more quickly, especially between fundraising and also their demonstrated support coming out of these debates. And what youre going to have is democrats then making a choice about the future of the party. And as a democrat, i am heartened by the fact that we show the breadth and the depth of this party, we show that vision to the American People. And i think that were going to be, you know, democrats are going to be ready when that nominee is chosen. Look, theres a long way between here and there. Candidates are going rise and fall as these polls are going to be up and down. And thats healthy for the party. Donna edwards, david jolly, mark leibovich, big thanks to all of you. Shaq, keep us posted on the happenings in the windy city. Polls not the only thing shuffling on the 2020 front. John hick he loopers Campaign Staff is getting a bit of a new look. Well dmi well dive into that on the other side of this break. We also have senator cory Booker Joining me ahead. Well talk about his just revealed plan to overhaul this countrys immigration detention system. And thats an issue that sent more of a dozen of his Congressional Colleagues to texas yesterday to tour two border facilities. Had is just part of what congresswoman alexandria ocasiocortez had to say about what she saw. Well, what we saw today was unconscionable. They should be given water. They should be given basic access to human rights. And it is a false notion the idea that we have to choose between people is a false notion. A false notion eyebrows first, just tease it a little. Where do you see your party right now . Its going to be how do we think government should work and who do we think government should work for . Work for . A new cnn National Poll shows after last weeks debate down in miami 11 Democratic Candidates are now polling under 1 . On that list, former colorado governor John Hickenlooper. Some of his key Campaign Staff has left. He has a new Campaign Manager now. So, is it enough to reset his trajectory in this race . Democratic president ial candidate John Hickenlooper joining me now. Thank you so much for your time. Do appreciate it, governor. You just lost your Campaign Manager, your finance director, youre losing your spokesperson as well. Why so many changes at the top of the team right now . Well, we thought it was time to make a change. You know, these campaigns are long, hard campaigns. You dont always get it right with the first team. Its a little bit you know, i used to be in the Restaurant Business and its a little bit like putting a restaurant together. Sometimes you dont quite get the right team at the right time. Did you let them go or did they quit . Oh, a combination of the two, you know. We felt that there was, you know, it was the right time for a change. You know, its funny when i first was trying to open that restaurant, that first brew pub, it was one of the first ones in the countries, it took a long time. People didnt think it would work. It took a long time to raise the money and we switched some of the people involved with the project about halfway through and it made a tremendous difference. Same thing when i was running for mayor back in 2003 and i never never even run for student council. And i was at 3 , 4 in the polls with nine people running. We changed things up a little bit and good things happen. So, you know, obviously there are 20 some people running, we understand, you know, its a steep hill. But we want to give it our best shot and, you know, push ourselves. I look at that time think there im the only person running whos actually done what everyone else is talking about, right . Colorados the number one economy for the last few years. When i was mayor we got universal prek. Weather first do west of the mississippi do Major Police Reform back in 2004, ten years before ferguson. These are things i should be able to sell. Why do you think youve had such a tough time selling them so far . Well, part of it was so many candidates its hard to. Break through. Hard to get the voice out there. Im not sure im not always the perfect spokesperson for my own for my own ideas. But were working on that. What do you mean by that . Youre not the per inspect spokesperson for your own ideas . Well, you know, like as a debater, im not a im not a former prosecutor, i dont go after the other candidates. You know, i built my when i ran for mayor, ive never done an attack ad, ive never attacked the other candidates. You know, my focus has always been to try to present a future and in this case its heres what we did in colorado, heres how i can scale that up for the united states. And, you know, thats hard a hard message, its nuanced. It doesnt translate into a slogan. You know, i could say im the one guy whos done what everyone else is just talking about. And thats part of it. But, you know, ive got to get better at painting that Bigger Picture so people do hear it. And see it and understand the clarity. It sounds like you dont think its necessarily the message, it sounds like you think its the messenger . No, no, i think its i think its a little the message, a little of the messenger, little bit of the team. This is, again, any enterprise ive ever been in in my life its a combination factors that creates that ultimate success. And innovation, im a Small Business guy. I was an entrepreneur, i opened 20 businesses, created a thousand jobs. Innovation comes from recognizing whats not working and trying new ideas and bringing new people together. And you just dont quit. Thats you know, my mom was widowed twice before she was 40 years old and she told us, you cant control what life throws at you but you can control how you respond. And her big push was, you know, you never quit. You just keep trying other things until you make things work. Youve positioned yourself as more of a moderate in this in this crowded field and you were asked you were asked at the debate last week about providing Health Insurance to undocumented immigrants. And you, along with everyone else on that debate stage, you all raised your hands. How does that square with you being a moderate in this race providing healthcare to all undocumented immigrants . So healthcare was what the question was. And we do that already. And i think everybody country, every developed country in the world does. If someones in your country and they get sick and they go to the emergency room, we take care of them. Thats not the same as giving Health Insurance i wasnt talking about okay. I dont think in many of those candidates were talking about giving Health Insurance to everybody who was here. But if someone gets sick in your country, you take care of them. Thats the Good Samaritan is one of the most famous passages in the bible. The debates also look at a candidates number of donors and as we look forward to the second debate and the third debates in addition to polling we look at donors. Weve heard from mayor petes folks over the last 24 hours about the amount of money he raised in the second quarter. Bernie sanders just put out the fundraising numbers as well. Do you have any new information to share about how well you have done with fundraising . Well, we certainly havent raised 24 million. Have you raised 2 million . 3 million . Well, im not going to get into it until we pull the numbers together. But the bottom line is for a Small Campaign like us from a, you know, colorados about 6 million or a little less than 6 Million People, its harder to raise money because we dont were not promising free healthcare or, you know, to forgive free tuition for everyone, forgive student debt. Were trying to present a picture of this country and what it can be in the future that will resonate with everyone. And that has, you know, thats a harder a heard vehicle by which to get small donors. Governor, it sounds like youre describing two of the policy proposal the elimination of student debt and free healthcare, it sounds like youre describing them as pie in the sky ideas. Yeah, i think theyd be very hard to implement. I think, you know, one of the points ive tried to make is as democrats i think weve very clearly got to say that were not socialist. And many people view those large, you know, large expansions of government as in some way socialists. Im not saying they are, im just saying that the republicans are going to say were socialists and i think we very clearly got to say socialism is not the solution. I can say that governor, i want to follow up here because what you just said that this idea that you and your 19 or 20 other democratic contenders have to convince a large swath of this country that youre not socialists, thats i think thats a bit telling, no . Yeah, i think it does represent the fact that theres a lot of large programs that have been proposed that are, you know could be perceived and in many ways are expansions of government. If the Green New Deal promises, you know, every american a government job, if you look at medicare for all as portrayed, that implies taking away healthcare, private insurance from 180 americans, i mean, those are big, you know, i would argue pie in the sky type programs. And i think weve got to be very clear that socialisms not the answer. In colorado we got near universal healthcare without that big expansion. In colorado we got the number one economy. Weve passed universal background checks in a purple state. There are ways to get to very progressive objectives without these massive programs. Colorado governor, John Hickenlooper. Enjoyed it, sir. Thank you for your time. You bet. Thank you. Degrading images, jokes about Migrant Deaths, authorities now investigating a private online group involving Border Patrol agents after a report detailing shocking posts. It comes as lawmakers tour texas facilities under scrutiny for abysmal conditions. Well go live to one of those buildings after this. And well talk about a new plan to overhaul the entire system being rolled out today by president ial candidate senator cory booker who will join me just ahead. Andidate senator cory booker who will join me just ahead there are 6. 5 million of them; they all need a forever home. It would mean the world to them, and they will love you forever. Being rolled out today by being rolled out today by woman on phone discover. Hi. Do you have a travel card . Yep. Our miles card. Earn unlimited 1. 5 miles and well match it at the end of your first year. Nice im thinking about a scuba diving trip. Woman ooh gasp or not. You okay . Yeah, no, im good. Earn miles. Well match em at the end of your first year. The outcry over conditions at migrant shelters continues to grow. Democratic lawmakers talked about those conditions at a facility they visited in clint, texas. There were times when i walked through these facilities and i was enraged. One of the women said that she was told by an agent to drink water out of the toilet. I will never forget the image of being in a cell and seeing 15 women, tears coming down their faces. What we saw today was unconscionable. Im joined now by nbcs gabe gutierrez. He is on the ground in clint, texas. Hes been on this story from the beginning. How are officials there responding to what these Lawmakers Said that they saw about the conditions, gabe . Or are they responding . Reporter hi there, craig. Officials here with customs and Border Protection are pushing back very hard on those allegations basically saying what the Lawmakers Said about that woman telling them that these some of the migrants had been forced to drink out of out of toilets because they had no running water, cbp said that those allegations are untrue and there are adequate supplies in these facilities. When we toured this facility here in clint, texas, last week we were not allowed to speak to any of the children inside that facility. But they did make it a point show us all the supplies on hand, telling us they bot 61,000 worth of supplies for unaccompanied migrants, for migrants that came over the border buying 61,000 worth of supplies every day here along the el paso sector, craig. Gabe, customs and border, theyre also facing some criticism this morning over this reporting from propublica. Theres a quote secret Border Patrol Facebook Group where agents joke about Migrant Deaths and post sexist memes. We should note here that nbc news has not confirmed the post, but hows cbp responding . Reporter well, those are certainly disturbing allegations and disturbing posts that were report odd by propublica. Nbc hasnt been able to verify thols. But according to propublica, thousands of Border Patrol agents were part of that private Facebook Group and cbp has said it is launching an internal investigation and put out this statement, quote, these posts are completely inappropriate and contrary to the honor and integrity i see and expect from our agents day in and day out. Any employees found to have violated our standard of conduct will be held accountable. So certainly after the tour from those members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus yesterday put that together with the report from propublica, the debate here along the southern border is certainly heating up. Craig. Gabe gutierrez there in clint, texas, along the border. Thank you. The situation at the border that we were just talking about, that we just showed you, one of the key issues of this 2020 election. And candidates are putting forward their plans on how to best address it. Just this morning, new jersey senator cory booker released his plan that he says would drastically alter the nations detention system on his first day in office. He joins me now to talk about said plan. Senator booker, good to see you, sir. Thanks for your time. Whats in your plan . Well, first of all, understand that this is a crisis that donald trump has created through executive action. Congress has taken none of these steps and that there for its something that i can end through executive action. And so number one, we are going phase out these detention facilities. These private prisons, these ones that are violating peoples human rights. Were going to stop the criminalization of immigration and go back to the system as it was before he was president , which was a civil system which actually shows evidencebased models of having a better standard for protecting our country, for evaluating legitimate asylum claims and not violating peoples human rights. And then part of my plan is right away appointing a special envoy to those northern triangle countries, not doing what trump is doing right now, which is pulling resources away from those countries. Further aggravating that ongoing crisis. And instead, leaning in with Area Partners to make sure that we are stopping that corruption, that violence, and those items that are those horrible things that are pushing people out of the country in the first place. Senator, your plan, as i understand it, would, quote, virtually eliminate these migrant Detention Centers. These detention facilities seem to have a number of legitimate issues. But where would unaccompanied minors go . Where would they stay when they enter the u. S. If these facilities dont exist . Well, again, a lot of folks seem to think that we have to have these some thousand protect ourselves. And instead what we often see is nursing mothers, pregnant women, elderly, children being held in conditions that does, according to the governments own reports, permanent harm to these children. And so by having a system thats not of detention facilities, but finding placements for them, working on the kind of things that everybody from the American Pediatric Academy to the American Bar Association have spelled out, again, evidencebased programs that give them safe and secure housing and resources. And actually even for parents, a system so that they can come back through the civil process and be evaluated for their asylum claims. And if they have a legitimate pathways to become citizens in this country. So there would still be facility of some sort, they just wouldnt be detention facility, is that accurate . Again, we we can do this by relying on, number one, very shortterm facilities that are not in any way these kind of detention facilities. Got it. That affirm peoples human rights and dignity and have evidencebased often run by nonprotests placements for these children that dont hurt and harm them but actually help them. U. S. Customs and Border Patrol reports that some 132,000, i want to make sure i have this right. More than 132,000 migrants were apprehended in may. Thats around nine times the amount of people who entered in may of 2017. How specifically do you plan to address this obvious surge in migrants crossi migrantsi migrants crossing the border in the shortterm. A lot of President Trumps bolster and rhetoric is being used by the coyotes to create a more sense of urgency to come it our country right now. So the special envoy and the work well do in those countries on day one of of my presidency will reduce those folks making this dangerous journeys. At the border with do not need to be criminalizing folks, sucking in expensive Law Enforcement resources that we show there are models in our own country that we have shown that could lower cost, increase the safety and security in our country, have more effective evaluation dollars of peoples legitimate claims. Theres a better way to go. This crisis has been created by a president through his blust, he through his criminalization, through his inhumane detention facilities, through the separation of families, all of these practices are more expensive violating values, permanently harming the human rights and wellbeing of folks. We do not have to do it this way. Your plan focuses on executive orders. You and other democrats have been critical of the use of executive authority by president s in the past. Why not go through congress . Well, again, i look for a bipartisan Immigration Reform and i think we can do that. But in the immediate, there are real crises that have to be dealt with. Whether it daca children and their parents, i will give them security not living in the anxietyridden limbo that theyre in right now. In neighborhoods and communities communities all across this country like the city i live in, i will stop these i. C. E. Policies that are actually making us more dangerous by making, creating fear in communities, having immigrant communities afraid to come forward and talk with the police. I need to stop the things that are making us a less secure nation, creating more dangerous environments, driving people who should have pathways to citizenship like our dabbing ab kids, dreamers, like people here on temporary protected status, driving them into insecurity and undermining their wellbeing. We can do this in a way that reflects our values area, firms our security and human riefts others and makes us be a beacon of light to the world. I have governor John Hickenlooper on a few minutes ago and he talked about some of the proposals that had been touted by a number of your democratic contenders. Free healthcare, free college, loan forgiveness. He called them pie in the sky proposal. He also expressed some concern about the tilt of the party, if you will. Used the word socialist a number of times, expressed some concerns over the party veering towards socialism. Are you equally concerned . You know what . Im concerned right now in a 2020 election to run my race. Im not in this race to talk about other folks. Im in this race to talk about my plans and my visions of the country. Not about the plans and proposals, not about the governor, but about some of these proposals. This idea that democrats are offering a bunch of free stuff for primary voters and they wont be able to deliver . Well, again, what im offering is actually common sense things that make us all better. Healthcare proposal that will drive down the cost of prescription drugs. Make healthcare more affordable. Proposing debtfree college and helping us to compete with countries like germany where the cost of college is between zero and 4 . Canada where the cost of college is about 7 of median income. But there are far few people that live in canada. People love to compare us to canada. Were talking 30 Million People in canada. Thats not new york city. You know what . We used to have the top educational system, k through college on the planet earth. The World Economic forum competes that. The most valuable Natural Resource a country has and a global knowledgebased economy is the genius of its children. If we dont get back to investing in education as a country, we will not compete globally in this economy because chinas top 10 of their High School Students are roughly more than all of the High School Student we have. We are in a global competition here and we better do a much better job of investing in the we will being and educational pathways for our children. Thats why from apprenticeship programs to pathways to college and careers, im going to be a president that stands up for Public Education and pathways for our kids to nurture our genius. This is common sense in the is what your fathers generation and my fathers and mothers generation did, they invested in infrastructure, they invested in education, they shupd Small Businesses. They create a country when we invest in each other they grow and they succeed. We stopped doing that. Lets get back to doing the common sense things we know work. Really quickly. Axios is reporting your campaign had the three biggest fundraising days outside of the launch. From wednesday night weve gotten fundraising numbers from mayor pete and from Bernie Sanders in the last 20 four hours. You want to break some news on a Tuesday Morning and tell us how much money your campaign raised last quarter . We know the momentum since the debate and 20 million mernds got to see me standing toe to toe with other Democratic Candidates. The surge has good going on. Weve been enjoying a good week of fund raising. How much, senator . Go to cory booker,. Com, you can give a dollar, anybody can give a dollar, be a part of this momentum and well report those numbers soon, but lets not stop, please. If you want to keep my voice in this debate, go to corybooker. Com, help out, give a buck. I enjoyed our substantive conversation. Thank you, zblir youre the man, i really are. I enjoy our talks as well. I hope to be in studio sometime soon. Make it happen. Invitations open. Safe travels. Lets get realtime action from one of our reporters who has covered the situation involving migrants and the border extensively the. Jul Julia Ainsley covers the department of immigration for us. Gut check for you here. That plan we heard from senator booker, will it make a meaningful change on the ground based on what youve seen in your reporting . Well, i mean, hes right in that right now we are really focused on detention because weve seen reports of some terrible situations happening for children as well as all immigrants in these Border Patrol stations along the border. But i thinks had plan focuses very heavily on detention and it leaves out some of the things that those Detention Centers actually do. For example, children are vetted to go to sponsors, to go to relatives, to make sure they end up in a safe home by the government, by health and human services. If you place that in the hands of a nonprofit, im not sure that that situation could be regulated. And there have been cases in the past where children have been sent off to places where theyve had to do manual labor and they have not been put in a caring and loving home. And so you could run into that again. Also, lets think about the communities. If you did not have detention, a way to process immigrants and then strategically plan where they go around the country as they wait for their asylum hearing, a lot of these border towns could be extremely overwhelmed. As you know our correspondent Cynthia Mcfadden went to new mexico, a town that was ofrp overwhelmed where they were having to move their shelter to deal with something that had been a federal responsibility. I think my questions to senator booker would stem around how are you going to answer the questions around and put these responsibilities that normally go to the government in the hands of nonprofit and make sure that the Community Stays safe and that these people actually get the care that they need . A lot of these immigrants when at the come through this dangerous journey, the first place where they are screened and they get medical care is by our government officials. Julia ainsley, thank you. Realtime fact check there. Weve just heard from two of the candidates this hour making news of their own. Today, we will get reaction to all of that right after this. Go all of that right after this with tough food, your dentures may slip and fall. Fixodent ultramax hold gives you the strongest hold ever to lock your dentures. So now you can eat tough food without worry. Fixodent and forget it. Stimulant laxatives forcefully stimulate i switched to miralax for my constipation. The nerves in your colon. Miralax works with the water in your body to unblock your system naturally. And it doesnt cause bloating, cramping, gas, or sudden urgency. Miralax. Look for the pink cap. All right. Weve got a lot to digest from this hour with our two new interviews with president ial candidates. I want to bring back former democratic congressman Donna Edwards and david jolly. Let us start with cory booker here, the senator from new jersey. Heres what he said when i asked him about where those unaccompanied children will go if we close detention facilities. A lot of folks seem to think that we have to have these somehow to protect ourselves. And instead what we often see is nursing mothers, pregnant women, elderly, children being held in conditions that does, according to the governments own reports, permanent harm to these children. And so by having a system thats not of detention facilities, but finding placements for them, working on the kind of things that everybody from the American Pediatric Academy to the American Bar Association have spelled out, again, evidencebase prod grams th evidencebased programs that give them safe and secure Housing Resources and for parents a system so that they can come back through the civil process and be evaluated for their asylum claims and if they have legitimate pathways to become citizens in this country. So there would be still be facilities of some sort, they just wouldnt be detention facilities, is that accurate . Again, we we can do this by relying on, number one, very shortterm facilities that are not in in way these kind of detention facilities that affirm peoples human rights and dignity. All right, congresswoman, theres the senators plan with regards to those detention facilities. Donna, what do we make of it . I think it was really important for cory booker and i think for some of these other candidates following the democratic debate to begin to really flush out what it means for them to have a border a border policy. And think hes right, weve got to phase out these private forprofit detention facilities that are dangerous and are harming children. Now, theres a question about what the role of the federal government should be. I dont think that he was enti clear about that, but the fact is that his policy is actually quite comprehensive when you look at dealing with the northern triangle countries and whats driving the immigration numbers upward because of the pressure that President Trump is wrongly putting on the border. That will lower the number, uniting families using alternatives to release the controls, how it is that people get back into the system and get their cases evaluated. All of these things in cory bookers proposal i think go to the heart of making sure we can reduce the reliance on detention as a deterrent and detention as the alternative for dealing with the migrant population. We heard from senator hickenlooper, his response to my question about providing healthcare to undocumented immigrants. You positioned yourself as more of a moderate in this crowded field. You were asked at the debate last week about providing Health Insurance to undocumented immigrants. And you along with everyone else on that debate stage, you all raised your hands. How does that square with you being a moderate in this race, providing healthcare to all undocumented immigrants . So healthcare was what the question was. We do that already. And i think every country, every developed country in the world does. If someones in your country and they get sick and go to the emergency room, we take care of them. Thats not the same as giving Health Insurance. I wasnt talking about it i dont think many of those candidates would talk about Health Insurance to everybody who is here. If someone gets sick in your country, you take care of them. David, how does that position resonate with voters like you, once republican, now potentially open to other options . Yeah, you know, the fight for the heart and soul of the Democratic Party makes me happy. Im a registered independent, i dont have to be in the scrum. Most democrats on stage is right and its a matter of communicating to the American People where we are as a nation. If someone walk s into a publicly funded hospital and theyre il, regardless of nationality or their legal status theyre provided healthcare. They should be because thats who we are as a nation. A lot of my never trumper friends have been taking heat for giving advice to democrats. Ive not giving advice to democrats whatsoever. I do think any candidate running for any office as you fight for the heart and soul of your party, dont forget to show voters youre fighting for the heart and soul of who we are as a nation. We have kids in cages at the border. We have an accelerated wealth gap. If youre running for school board or the white house, point out where the problem is. Voters will come out and reject the policies of the last three years if you frame them as such. Thanks to both of you. Do appreciate you. Close the camps. Family separation is unamerican, its horchtorture and illegal. It didnt correspond to our values as a nation. Reporter what are you asking senator marco rubio and other members of congress some. Were asking the senator to listen to his constituents. We dont want children in cages. We want safe border with due process with immigration which is what we have left by brutalizing the process. This is the letter we want the camps closed. We want to end family separation. We want the resources to go to family reunification and due process. Everyone in america deserves due process.
