Sanders tries to get a scoop on New Hampshire with ice cream social events. Kamala harris in san francisco, three different events, including the pride parade a short time ago. The current occupant of the white house has no appreciation, probably no interest clearly, and probably no knowledge of this history, of this work. He says he wants to make America Great again. Again for whom . Back before couples could marry, all couples . Back before gay couples could adopt . Beto Orourke Presses on immigration. He walked into the same child detention city in texas that castro stopped by a day earlier. 8yearold kids taking care of 8monthold toddlers, toddlers without diapers. Kids without soap or toothpaste or the ability to clean and take care of themselves. This hour, we will start with the president. He is in the air now and will arrive at the white house in a matter of hours after capping off his overseas trip at the dmdm dmz. The president met with kim jongun at the korean Demilitarized Zone. He shook hands. He became the First American president to set foot in north korea. Some of the outcomes, a public invitation for kim to visit the white house. The plan in two or three weeks to resume lower Level Nuclear talks potentially. A little more than 12 hours ago, when we were on air, the meeting ended. We were wondering what did happen . In that 30 minutes where they were inside the freedom house. Any readout . Whats the latest . The best readout is from the president. He is saying that he offered economic incentives to the North Koreans to let them know how they can bring their country forward and have it be part of the 21st century. We had the pageantry. Now the diplomacy. The president designated his team to start on these lower level talks. We dont know who has been on the north korean side. The president did hint this idea that you would be able to lift some of the sanctions i stress some before you had a final deal. Listen to how the president talked about sanctions. At some point, look, im looking forward to taking them off. I dont like sanctions being on his country. Im looking forward. The sanctions remain, yes. At some point during the negotiation, things can happen. Thats what we will be talking about. There are a lot of dangled possibilities out there. Among them was this conditional offer to visit the white house. That would happen at the end of the process to finalize it. Its clear the president wants to keep the conversations going. Now we have to have conversations at a lower level. Mike pompeo is saying they are not at square one. We can have a discussion on whether or not this was a restart of negotiations or a reset. What is clear is they have a long way ahead of them. The two sides need to come together at some crucial issues. Stay with us. I want to bring in our panel. Christopher hills and victor chau and lauren gambino. I want to start with you, victor. You and hans were working on this topic. Now that we had time to think through what happened, what is the next crucial step based on what hans was saying as they look at low level talks and try to put a plan together in the next two to three week ss . The main thing you are looking for is the u. S. Top working level negotiator starting meetings with his counterpart. Up until this meeting that took place yesterday, it wasnt even clear who his counterpart was. I think we have some idea of who it is, both ambassador hill and i have worked with that person in the Six Party Talks for the last agreement. Those working level talks need to start closing the gap on things like how do we define denuclearization . Are the North Koreans going to offer up more than the main nuclear site to include other facilities outside of that . From the north korean perspective, is the United States, as President Trump suggested, willing to partially lift sanctions in return for some denukization steps . We are looking for an agreement on the big deal, all the weapons for all the sanctions. The first step down the road that can be verified of starting denukization in return for partial suspension. Putting back on your old hat, if you will, what would you be watching for in terms of the next step in the next three to four weeks to see, this is working, this sort of cart before the horse approach . Yeah. First of all, its a little worrisome that you never even hear the word denuclearization in all of this fanfare up in the dmz. I would like to hear that a little from the North Koreans. Secondly, the president has talked about being very patient. He has been very patient. Very little has been done. But i think in being patient, he is expecting the North Koreans do it all at once. I think what i would like to see from the u. S. Side is a willingness to do this more on a step by step basis with the North Koreans. From the North Koreans, i would like to see a restatement of their interest in denuclearization. I would like to see a kind of list of steps theyre prepared to take, starting, for example, with the list of their programs. They have never listed that. Secondly, with some notion of scheduling of how they might dismantle these programs. They offered, for example, to dismantle the one complex which is as far as we know the largest. Lets hear a little more about that and lets see if they will put that in the context of an opening step rather than a sort of concluding process which is clearly not enough. There needs to be a lot more discussion. Frankly, i think as victor suggests, we need to really get serious at the working level and not just have these photo ops at the president ial level. Lauren, who is the team . It was mentioned by the president , we are going to put a team together. I feel good about my team thats going to be focusing on the Korean Peninsula . You have donald trump. He says he is assembling this team. We have seen him sort of put forward recently we saw him put forward ivanka. Shes playing a more front and center role. Now i guess we just have to were going to have to wait and see to see who he is going to assemble and how i guess how thats going to start to structure this these sort of markers so that we know exactly what to expect and what has been agreed to. Hans, as you were reporting on this, its not like the president s team before. It was fully behind this meeting, whether we know whether it was a game day call or not, they didnt necessarily want the president to put out that tweet to say, chairman kim, lets meet. Yeah. The president wants to tweet, theres not a lot any of his ai aides can do to stop him. The bigger question really would be, who will be on the north korean team . There were reports published after the failure of the summit in hanoi that one of those negotiators on the north korean side had been executed, had been roughed up. Some of them had gone missing. There were there was a picture of one top negotiator. Appeared to be in good health or in health or alive. One of the more telling aspects of the exchanges yesterday we have to know that President Trump was interacting with the media in real time throughout this. At the beginning, during, middle and end. He gives a wrap from twitter when he is flying home. The president was asked on whether or not any of the previous negotiators from the north korean side had been eliminated. He said, i dont really know. I certainly hope not. Thats an indication that the u. S. Side doesnt have great visibility into whats happening in north korea on the internal dynamics, internal politics. Victor and chris know that from their time there. Its always been a challenge trying to figure out the power structure inside the kim regime. That dynamic hasnt changed. Victor, talk about that. Looking inside north korea and who might be the team thats going to be working with the americans and for that matter as well since we saw jay moon, who there . The secretary of state and then his deputy on this. In north korea, the issue was that the initial negotiations that led to the singapore summit and hanoi on the north korean side were led by people from the united front department, which is not the people that we have negotiated in the past with on these nuclear deals. After the failure in hanoi, it appears that those individuals have been sort of pushed to the side. It looks like the Foreign Ministry in particular the foreign minister who was in the room for those discusses yesterday and his first vice foreign minister, look like the people who are going to be now the point people for these negotiations. These are people that we know well. They actually we were involved chris and i were involved with negotiations with them in the past. They are the most experienced negotiators on the north korean side when it comes to dealing with these nuclear weapons. They both speak english pretty well. Whether that leads to an agreement, its not clear. Ambassador hill, as victor was telling me last night, as we look at this, the former approach might be called strategic patience. If theres an idea that can be put behind or label that can be put behind the way this president is dealing with north korea as the idea of a potential doctrine, what would you call it . What phase are we in now that we have seen the third meeting between the two leader snz. You know, usually, you dont deploy your president until you have a pretty good idea which way you are going. In this case, we have a top down process. The president gets out there and then sort of exploratory talks. The proposition is to convince the North Koreans they have a Better Future without nuclear weapons. Many say they will never give up their nuclear weapons. Thats music to the north korean ears. What they are hoping is that everyone will say that and then we will slide into some sort of other mode. I think its very important to press them and make it clear that we cannot walk away from this and leave them with nuclear weapons. I think the president is doing this first. He is up in front. I think we all should support him. Frankly, i would like to see his National Security adviser, mr. Bolton, who spent a lifetime opposing talks with north korea is supporting the approach of his boss. If anything, were not seeing what was typical during both of your times and the idea of multilateral work and discusses and negotiations as we look now at this president working directly with the leader of north korea. Lauren, you will be back with us. Hans, thank you for your nonstop work for the last 24 hours. Ambassador hill, victor, thank you as well. This week, it was all about the democratic debates. For two nights on nbc owned stations, frontrunners tried to distance themselves from the pack. Lesser known candidates tried to make lasting impressions. The big name on the stage, elizabeth warren. She took center stage at the first question of the night and had a strong showing but was one of the more obscure candidates who took everyone by surprise and made the biggest splash with New Hampshire voters. I honestly could not tell a few of them apart. Castro surprised me. I was surprised by how much i liked castros perspective. Castro, i liked him in the beginning. He faded. I thought he made some good points. Actually, castro had the strongest surprise moments for me. I thought castro got a lot of great points out that i think i hadnt saw people talking much about. Castro was pretty good as well. The exchange between castro and beto was a good exchange. Castro kind of took a moment to really stand out, especially. There was night number two, the main event for many of the democrats. The night was supposed to be dominated by the candidate everyone thought was the democrats top dog, joe biden. When Kamala Harris turned the table by confronting the former vicepresident on race, the night took a different tone. I think last night we saw Kamala Harris break through. We saw a clear delineation between the older generation of democrats and newer, more progressive voices emerging. Some people quick to say this could be really, if not fatal, seriously damaging to bidens prospects. I heard that. I think biden still has a lot of obawe bbama supporters. Biden shows he had his day. He was defensive and living in another world. I thought he would be a little more assertive in his approach. Of course, Kamala Harris was a superstar last night. I think kamala stepped out of her zone. She got a leg up on the competition. She was being real and felt that that was the time that was her opportunity to confront him. To some reaction from newspapers around the state of florida. The key swing state as many of you know. An opinion piece titled put beto, marianne and the other lightweights at the kids table. Its time for the real candidates to share the stage and everyone else to be relegated to the kids table. Another headline from the south florida sentinel says joe biden may have been hurt by the way he was depicted as old by swalwell. Red, white and you. 2020 candidates are coming to the defense of Kamala Harris after taking heat from donald trump. Its not the one who occupies the oval office who is doing this. The candidate has a busy day in her home state with three events in san francisco. One of which is marching in the citys lgbtq pride parade. Harris is dealing with an Online Smear Campaign after donald trump junior share and deleted a tweet questioning her race. A statement from a spokesman for don junior says his tweet was simply him asking if it was true that Kamala Harris was half indian because its not something he had ever heard of before. Harris fellow candidates, theyre not having it. Putting their rivalries aside to tweet against the Smear Campaign effort, including man she won fronted over the issue of bussing at the debate, joe biden. The former vicepresident defended harris calling it disgusting and called it to the birtherism attacks against obama. The spokeswoman for harris said, it didnt work then, it wont work now. Vaughn, one of the questions, first of all, is how is she reacting to the Smear Campaign . Reporter i think to answer your question, its an interesting day to do that. She was here at the pride parade in san francisco. She grew up on the other side of the bay in oakland. We had the chance to talk to senator harris about what could call a Smear Campaign about those racist tweets going around. We just talked to her after she addressed folks at city hall. She said specifically that it shows that racism still exists here in the United States today. Its about confronting those issues head on when they come about. Of course, she had the backing of her democratic opponents that came to her defense saying those type of racist smears should not exist in a Campaign Like this. She was born across this bay over here in oakland. That conversation was about, frankly, one, me sharing a pers
