Republicans attach something they thought would be a sweetener, a legislative trap that helps low income people knowing democrats would insist on something that would help the dreamers, those individuals brought here involuntarily as young people and remain here. Lamar alexander is a republican thats seen as a Bridge Builder and expresses frustration you see over the state of play in the capitol. Its as if democrats and republicans are still negotiating what the table should look like, right . As mike pointed out, you have this new line of criticism from the white house suggesting that the senate change its rules to prevent such impasses from happening again in the future. They dont make sense when youre dealing with somebody like chuck schumer. If we want progress in this country, we have to get rid of the filibuster in a lot of these instances. The constitution calls for three coequal branchs of government but has not stopped the president from suggesting how the chamber might function more effectively. You can argue all sides share some blame here. The republicans and donald trump are trying to argue that democrats held this continuing resolution hostage by demanding a settlement on daca and originally, democrats werent wrong. Whats interesting here, though, is that youre seeing kind of both sides and a real base play, especially as were analyzing what kind of impact this could have on the midterm elections. Youre seeing the president and republicans argue that democrats are more concerned with undocumented immigrants than they are with the military and youre going to hear democrats say that the republicans here are playing games, they are not negotiating in good faith and so when you look at who is to blame here, the polls show republicans and donald trump, because they share all levers of government are going to take the brunt of the publics blame, u but i wou remind everybody, we have many, many, many, months of news cycles before. Republicans shut down the government in 2014 but took over the senate the following year. Democrats are feeling emboldened and dont think they will suffer from this. Nine and a half months is a long time in politics. Alex, i want to play what a democratic congressman said yesterday. I think it would be a monumental waste of taxpayers money to build a monument to stupidity but if thats what it takes to take 800,000 young men and women and give them a chance to live freely and openly in america, then ill roll up my sleeves. Ill go down there with bricks and mortar and begin the wall. Okay. How did democrats get to this point . Is st what is stopping the president and republicans from taking this deal . It seems like its the president himself. I mean, weve had a number of moments where it looked like they were close to a deal and then the president backtracked or changed his mind or had advisors speak to him like negotiating with jello. Its really notable to have gutierrez who has no more credibility apong among activis say he would be willing to give money to fund the wall in exchange for a daca deal. That was an obvious possibility for months now that could have been done. If hes saying that, maybe that signals democrats are willing to back down a bit and cut a deal there. You have to get the president s sign off and as senators on both sides said, they can find a deal but without the president , the house, the president has unique credibility with his wing of the house caucus and they never air cover from the white house to vote for anything on immigration. The white house staff came back and said thats not really the way to go and youve also seen we saw this in that first immigration meeting where the president said that he would sign anything and he would take the heat for it and then you had republicans come back and say wait a second, we control all levers of government here, we want a more conservative, much more conservative harder line approach to immigration and so i think youre seeing these factions kind of fight it out as it pertains to this and thats why schumer is saying look, the president is all over the place and backed up with that with Mitch Mcconnell that said they arent sure what the president wants for immigration and they want to wait to see what he wants before they proceed. To expand on that, chris, the Associated Press heard from a white house official that said that the presidencys th sees th shutdown as his commitment to tough negotiations, he believes the democrats will be the ones to blink first. You know, donald trump knows how to do one thing, that is to dem demonize, divide and disrupt. And thats campaigning, not president. John kelly doesnt seem to understand the difference, either. Do you agree with that, mark . I do. There are comparisons made between donald trump and Richard Nixon but a big, big difference between the two. Its a mistake to cannonize in comparison. If you look at nixon, nixon knew government. He had been a congressman for four years. He knew the lever s of government. He read a lot. Donald trump doesnt seem to be interesting. Hes running the government as though it is his own family business, that is a big mistake. Given the fact there are comparisons between the nixon presidency and Trump Presidency, where where the similarities . Why do people make those anal y analogi analogies . On the obvious similarity, we dont know what robert mueller, the charges he may bring, if any. Ill tell you one thing about donald trump, it frightens me and that is i think Richard Nixon was more mentally stable than donald trump is and i think Richard Nixon had a minimal respect for constitutional norms. When nixon was on the verge of conviction in the senate for watergate, a delegation went to him, explained he had to resign and went quietly. How unique is this . There is a protocol among former president s. You step down. You kind of remain quiet in the first year of your post presidency to allow your successor to get his sea legs in the job and find himself in the job. The Trump Presidency is unique because the one thing we know donald trump stands for is everything anti obama. Its probably been harder for barack obama to step back and not say anything but its important to note that not only has barack obama not spoken out directly about donald trump, neither has jimmy carter or either of the bushes during the course of the obama, the Trump Presidency. So its not unusual for a president to step back, but i think its likely to see barack obama get more involved, if not taking on trump directly, but certainly to get more involved with his party as it relates to the future of the democratic process. You know, i just found myself wondering as youre talking about that how three years from now or seven, how this president will behave if he does in t
