misconduct allegations against him. we'll have that for you and the republicans make their tactic crystal clear when it comes to the russian investigation, target the fbi and be robert mueller. will it work in undermining the evidence, though? i'm back from israel. the backlash is obviously in the streets and the anger is growing. all that coming up. we begin in alabama where it's a tale of two candidate strategies this sunday, democratic doug jones looking like the traditional candidate holding multiple events across the state today including an appearance in huntsville that set of this hour and we're monitoring that for you. republican roy moore on the on the other hand with a very different strategy, staying largely out of the public eye again this week even though did give an interview where he once again denied the allegations of sexual misconduct against him. take a listen. >> i did not know them. i had no encounter with them. i never molested any one and for them to say that, i don't know why they're saying it but it's not true. >> roy moore also getting another assist from alabama trump. his robo-call was released today. >> hi, this is president trump and i need alabama to go vote for roy moore. it is so important. we're already making america great again. i'm going to make america safer and stronger and better than ever before. but we need that seat. we need roy voting for us. >> so we are breaking it all down this hour including some key questions taking him at his word. will roy moore's denials resonate with voters in that state. president trump's all in way new approach not helping roy moore. is there a risk for the president in this new strategy and democrat doug jones bringing in corey booker and other african-american leaders here in the home stretch. is african-american turnout the key to an upset victory for jones? joining me now to discuss this von hill lard who is birmingham, alabama, vivian and charles sykes and author and commentator. good to have all of you with us. let me begin with our alabama election resident expert von hillard. i want to start with you. take a listen to roy moore. >> i have written cards, graduation cards. i have known families. i've known a lot of people throughout my life, but these allegations are completely false. >> so there's still a little bit of this hedge by moore i guess where, you know, he keeps saying i don't know any of the accusers, they're lying but i've met a lot of people, i've signed a lot of things over the careers. i don't know everybody. i don't remember remember everybody. is that going to raise concerns among voters with less than 37 hours to go here? >> he's had a tough time answering those questions and that's why he's turned to very friendly media. he hasn't taken an interview opportunity with any news outlet at this point and you hear that resonating within a portion of the republican electorate. you hear many of these republican voters over the last several weeks that have cast doubt on his denial saying that it's tough. nine women have come forward to just push their accusations aside despite them wanting to vote republican and despite them wanting to believe the roy moore they've known. it's important to note on that point, republicans in the state have shown a willingness to cross over. he won that race over the democrat by just 3 percentage points compared to mitt romney who was on the same ballot that year winning by 20%. when it comes to the u.s. senate and roy moore are they willing to do that. that's the question. >> and speaking of republican senators, let me play you what richard shelby had to say today. >> republican, i had to vote republican. i wanted to vote republican. i understand where the president's coming from. i understand we would like to retain that seat in the u.s. senate, but i tell you what, there's a time that we call it a tipping point and i think so many accusations, so many cuts, so many drip, drip, drip, when it got to the 14-year-old story, that was enough for me. i said, i can't vote for roy moore. >> so charlie, shelby said he's obviously reached his tipping point does he have the clout in alabama to get rank and file to follow his example and write in a candidate other than roy moore? >> well, first of all, think about how extraordinary that is to have a sitting u.s. senator make that statement the sunday before the election, an election that looks like is going to be on by roy moore. he's going to be sitting next to roy moore relatively shortly. the question you're asking is we'll find out on tuesday night. the black vote is going to be absolutely crucial but i do think -- i do think the fact that roy moore is basically playing the same strategy that worked for donald trump after "access hollywood," deny, deny, deny and hope that either the voters do not believe the women or i think more troubling, believe the women and think, you know what? it's a binary choice even if he did all of this it's better than a democrat. it's better than somebody who's going to vote with chuck schumer and i think that's the dynamic that i get the vibe coming from republicans in alabama at least right now. >> the president in the beginning of this race, he kept his distance. he didn't weigh in on who he was going to endorse but he's definitely turned that around 180 degrees. he's offered his full throated support for roy moore at a rally friday in neighboring florida. he recorded this robo-call that we were talking about earlier. is there any risk for the president in all of this? >> well, sure, there is and i think at the beginning when it wasn't clear what the shape of the race was going to be, he and his advisers stayed out of it but i think as it appears that roy moore has gained at least a slight edge here and that's what the polls seem to show. i think the president has been emboldened because he wants to declare its a victory for him if that is what happened. the two keys here, one of them as has been said is the african-american vote. that's got to be a larger portion of the overall electorate than it usually is. almost barack obama level in order for doug jones to have a chance. and the other key here is suburban evangelical or at least regular church attending suburban white women. i've spent a lot of time in alabama over the years, i know people in the various churches, the mega churches around birmingham, for example, i talked to some people, some women from those mega churches in the subbushes of birmingham and what they say is, i don't care what anybody's saying, these women will not vote for doug jones and the reason they won't for doug jones is because of issues such as abortion and because of the courts as charlie was saying. as i see it now, those are the two keys. if those white suburban women can't stand the idea of voting for roy moore, then doug jones got a chance. >> republican senator tim scott he was with chuck todd this morning on "meet the press." take a listen to what he said on the president's involvement. >> are you comfortable that the leader of your party all in for roy moore? >> there are a number of people in my party who are not including myself and many republican senators. >> so vivian, and we're talking about this -- again about senator shelby, if moore wins, what's the likely gleeting that he's going to get from fellow republicans when you hear people like tim scott and senator shelby as well, are they going to try to get him out or not? >> i think it's a little bit of deja vu from what we saw with president trump's election a year ago where a lot of republicans were very, very cautious about giving a full throated endorsement to him. they ultimately came around and said we have to work with him so this is the only chance that we have but i want to point something out really important about the robo-call that you were playing earlier is that president trump's exact words were, i need alabama to vote for roy moore, i need alabama to vote for him. this is about president trump's agenda. it has nothing to do in his mind with roy moore with any of the sexual improties that are alleged against him. he wants that republican vote in the senate to help him further his agenda which he's had so much trouble getting through in the past year. that is really where we are two days out. >> interestingly enough. it doesn't make the case for alabamians themselves to have roy moore. charlie, how big of a problem you think would it be for roy moore for him to win if he wins for republicans going forward in 2018? could he become a lightning rod for the midterm elections? >> well, unless the democrats are brain dead he ought to be because the moment he is seated, now you go into chapter two of the dilemma this poses for the republican party, do they follow through on the saber rattling about expelling him. i'm sceptical that they would do that especially with donald trump's support. what you'll have is you'll have republican senator roy moore perhaps providing the decisive vote on key elements of the president's agenda. think about that. just to speculate. imagine if this tax cut bill actually passed because of roy moore's vote. it becomes the trump-moore tax cut of 2017, 2018. so this is a huge problem for the republican party going forward. >> let's go to alabama really quickly with von. doug jones early on was not really going after roy moore on the sexual harassment issue. trying to focus on the issues but towards the ends of his campaign what is the message we're hearing from doug jones now? >> reporter: i don't think we should push doug jones aside in this race at this point. remember, it feels like an iowa caucus situation. he has won. he's been on the ground campaigning every single day, sometimes three, four cities a day. they're out canvassing. the campaign on birmingham knocked on 9,800 doors just this week alone. he's having hundreds of supporters. listen to what he just said. he stopped here with new jersey senator corey booker and this was his message. >> don't let anyone tell you this is an election of choices to what alabama wants to be. it is not that. we know who we are alabama. we know who we are. this is an election to tell the world who we are and what we stand for. >> reporter: roy moore has not been seen since tuesday on the trail. he is no events here this weekend before. doug jones is out there. he's resonating. in terms of just pure energy but, of course, yes, you should note that donald trump got almost double the number of votes that hillary clinton did one year ago so it's quite a mountain to ser mount. if this weren't being alabama, there's doug jones signage everywhere. go and stop in some of these suburbs and you talk to republicans on the fence whether they can vote for doug jones is a very real question. still very much in the air heading down into the last 36 hours. >> we'll see how that plays out in the 36 hours that remain. thank you very much. howard and vivian i'm going to ask you to stay with us for a little bit more conversation in the show. >> i'm just back from covering the unrest in the middle east following jerusalem. we'll look at the global backlash and what it means for peace and stability across the nation. >> the president has tweeted about it and now republicans are picking up on the strategy to undermine the investigation, go after the fbi and robert mueller. the risks of that strategy later this hour. ♪ spread a little love today ♪ spread a the palestinians are once again missing april opportunity to talk about the future of the region in the wake of abbas saying he will not meet with the vice president. >> it's very unfortunate. it's a movie we've seen 1,000 times. actually, no one was more interested in that discussion and that dialogue more than us the palestinians. it was me and my office who received the request from vice president's office for his trip to the region and visit to palestine to which i immediately responded positively that we would like to welcome him and then few days later it was his office senior advisers or the vice president together with representatives of the white house and the state department came to my office early november and we discussed the vice president's program while visiting bethlehem and palestine it was our proposition for him to meet our president and visit the church of nativity but actually have the opportunity to sit and discuss with christian leaders knowing he has christian minorities and communities in the middle east as a top priority for him and we wanted him to hear from the palestinian christians about their wish and the birthplace of jesus that is bem le hem, the wall and the situation in jerusalem as the city of one god and the city for all of the children of god be it jews, muslims, be it christians and we insisted on that meeting and we arrange it and on wednesday vice president pence stands behind president trump as he announced jerusalem as the capital of israel and then he released statements that this is not political, not legal, not even security based or interest based, this is biblical. this is about -- this is about the ordeign of god that this was given by an order of god to which we totally refused. it was the city of one god and god does not choose his people and this has shut down the discussion totally. >> let me just pick up on that point. it shut down the discussions is it to say that aerlt of this the plo, palestinian authority will not be engaging with any talks with the united states going forward, if so for how long? >> it's not the p.a. nor the p.l.o. or the palestinians who walked away from this. we will always embrace a genuine and meaningful peace process. we are the ones who are interested the most to end this conflict because this conflict is costing us the lives of our sons and daughters, our children. it's costing us our land being operated on a daily basis. we're tired. we want to end this. let me tell you this, if the blame game started and i think the statement you just read for me say blame game, if the blame game started that they will blame us for actually rejecting an empty peace process because the declaration has emptied the peace process of its soul. it was based on three things. the first is an honest mediator, broker, fair as was promised by president trump himself during the elections and when we met him three times. the second is the framework, the reference which is international law and the third is the consequences of peace. that declaration on wednesday by president trump i believe he has -- >> so -- >> -- honest broker so therefore i promise you if, if it's about blame, if they blame us for rejecting an empty peace process bring it on, ayman. we will stand tall and we will stand firm defending our internationally endorsed right and happy to discuss. >> let me just -- i have a few questions i want to ask you really quickly. i just spent a will the of time in the region. i had a lot of time to speak to a lot of palestinians. a lot of those i spoke to or very frustrated also upset with the palestinian political leadership for letting a decision like this happen. many of them saying they would like to see a change in the leadership. what cards do the palestinian political leadership have to play in a situation like this? what else can they do? >> that's exactly why i did call it a stab in the back just when it happened. i did call it a kiss of death because this has empowered the lives of america, this empowered the ones who are seeking a peaceful resolution to this and guess who it has empowered. it has empowered the armageddonist, it has empowered the extremist, those who see it as a zeal. it's very unfortunate. i know that severe pressure not only on the palestinian leadership on the egyptian on the jordanian. this one hit has been really been a precious gift to those who are burying families in the west bank. to those settling in illegal settlements. >> very quickly is the two-state solution dead? >> the two-state solution via a u.s. mediation is dead. the two-state solution via should remain and we will be now discussing and seeing how can we find an honest, fair, arbitrator, mediator that would really deliver the international consensus and would make sure that any peace deal would meet the very minimum requirement of dignity and rights to the palestinian people. >> thank you very much for joining us this sunday afternoon. appreciate your time. joining me now is ambassador denis ross, former assistant to president obama. it's great to have you with us. let me pick up on that last point there you just heard saying that the two-state solution is dead. do you share that assessment? >> well, what he said was it was dead if the u.s. was the mediator. he said it wasn't dead if it was through international mediation which is another way of saying he doesn't really think it's dead. the real question here is, would the palestinians not respond if the united states let's say a couple months from now after the atmosphere has cooled, would the palestinians not respond if the united states presented a plan that was seen as serious and credible? one of the things jared kushner said a week ago publicly was that the united states was going to prepare and present a plan for israeli palestinian peace and it was going to be on the big issues, not the small issues. the big issues will have to include jerusalem and one of the things that president trump said was that the borders of israeli sovereignty as it relates to jerusalem have to be resolved through negotiations. the borders more generally have to be resolved through negotiations. so if the u.s. presents a plan that is credible on all the issues including on jerusalem, then i suspect that the palestinian position of today might not look the way -- may not look the way it is then as the way it is now. >> if i may ask and i was in the region a lot and one of the things that a lot of palestinian i was speaking to was, this decision by president trump really unmasked something they've known all along that the united states could not or was not an honest broker in the israeli-palestinian conflict. do you think that the united states under this administration, president trump's administration, given all of the personnel involved, jared kushner, david freedman, everyone else, can they be and are they an honest broker between the israelis and the palestinians? >> the proof will be in the pudding. >> based on the decision they've already made what would you say? >> i would say clearly at this point they've adopted positions that look like they're much more sympathic to the israelis. i can tell you the experience i had when i went to gaza in 2005, a few months before the israelis withdrew from and i met several hundred palestinians and they kept saying the u.s. can't be an honest broker, what you want is an america that can be an effective broker. no one else took the place of the united states during the first four years of the george w. bush administration when it walked away from peace making after bill clinton. the europeans didn't, the russians didn't. no one did. the reason is no one else has the ability to influence the israelis as well as the palestinians and so i think the u.s. can be an effective broker but that's the key. you can't be an effective broker unless you address the needs of both sides. >> you probably heard nikki haley statement at the top of the segment that we're doing where she said that this is the first american president to reflect the will of the people. i want to put up a poll from december 1st that the u.s. sentiment toward israel and palestinian. 57% want u.s. to be neutral and 63% opposed an embassy move by the united states unilaterally to jerusalem as the capital of israel. so is this administration out of touch with the american public when it comes to this issue? >> i think this administration is focused more on its base and to the extent to which for evangelicals this was an important move. there's no question in my mind that this is one of the reasons that the president made the decision. i will say this, having said that, no one doubts whether jerusalem is going to be at least a part of jerusalem is going to be israel's capital. there's no question about that. even the arab peace initiative which basically offers full diplomatic recognition and relations with the israeli if they withdrew to the june 4th '76 lines, even that by definition means all of west jerusalem would be part of israel. so in a sense what the administration is done is recognized reality. for me what they did from that standpoint was not the wrong thing, it was the right thing. the problem for me was not what they did, it was how they did it. you needed to work this quietly with arab leaders because they were going to be attacked once this decision was made. you want them to have the political space to be able to make difficult decisions and take on history and mythology. so from that standpoint the administration didn't make it easier for the arabs to take the kind of steps that the administration says it wants to be able to fulfill. it wants to present a serious israeli palestinian peace plan, to do that it needs a response from the palestinians and arabs as well. >> it's making that decision at this stage alone. is corrupt. the senior fbi is corrupt the system is corrupt. >> how about that? all three of them, frank, you worked for the fbi. i'll give you the chance to respond to this. what is your reaction to what appears not to be a blatant effort to try to discredit the fbi and its institutions? >> it's clearly become the defense strategy of a desperate white house right now that's directing folks and even through their own media channels to lash out the accusers because the facts aren't on their side. having led fbi public corruption investigations, served as assistant director i never once walked into a squad area and asked for a show of hands as to who was a democrat or republican and who was an independent. i simply selected the very best agents and investigators in the office and that's what mueller's done and that's what the american people expect. but we're going to see more and more of this as you see a more and more desperate white house. >> i know that republicans are focusing on a member of the mueller team who was removed due to anti-trump tweets earlier this summer. is there a danger here from mueller that this could raise enough questions about impartiality that it, in fact, could undermine what he's trying to do, could impair his conclusions or even have them outright dismissed? >> he got rid of the person who was responsible for the tweets because i think he correctly perceived that his presence on the team would be a distraction but at the end of the day the case is going to rise or fall on its evidence, not on the side activities of the investigators and so if the evidence is strong enough and powerful enough then those are going to be the decisions that get made and i don't think that the activities, political activities of individuals who working on the case should matter at the end of the day. >> frank, since you are the one person who was on the inside of the fbi. would republicans trying to paint the fbi as being full of anti-trump or anti-republican voices is there any truth to that? is there any way internally that people track or monitor which balance they have in terms of political party or ideology? >> it's a great question because it shows some of the lack of understanding on the american public on how investigations work. so within the fbi, there's this apolitical tone to everything that's done and it's all about the mission so the -- the very notion of asking people what their affiliation is or selecting a team because of political affiliation is simply something that's not done because it's all about the facts and the professionalism of the investigation. so it's not something that really enters in and when you do find some bias and twice in my career and only twice in my 25 year career i did remove agents from corruption investigations when i thought there might be the appearance and merely the appearance from the outside looking in that someone had some bias and that it could undermine the investigation because of an appearance problem. and that's it. that's how that works. >> barbara, i know there's been a lot of focus on donald trump jr. because of his closed door testimony in congress with some democrats saying he seemed to have a case of amnesia on some questions and, in fact, said attorney-client privilege protects his discussions with his father despite the fact that neither one of them is actually an attorney. will that sort of thing fly if and when he's interviewed by bob mueller's team? >> no, i don't think so. the attorney-client privilege is defined as communications between a client and his lawyer for the purpose of seeking legal advice. the presence of a third party waives the privilege. so the fact that president trump was present when they had a lawyer on the phone to make this conversation means that's a nonprivileged conversation. now when you say it before congress, if congress doesn't push back on that and accepts that answer, well, then, that's all you have. but in front of robert mueller i don't think he's going to be satisfied with that response. he will challenge that assertion of privilege and if donald trump jr. continues to assert it, robert mueller has the recourse of going to the court and arguing to a judge and asking the judge to direct donald trump jr. to answer the question if he is relying on some affirmativus privilege and the judge would direct him to answer the question, assert his fifth amendment privilege against testimony or being held in contempt of court. >> we'll have to wait and see if, in fact, >> that's been sort of the narrative since this came out with roy moore. he hasn't really spoken about it for a while, but that's the thing he wants them to seize on, and that's the only message that's come out. of course, he hasn't been seen since last tuesday until he appeared before that very friendly interview. so that's what he's counting on, but we shall see. >> john, you wrote a column this week titled "hellbound in pam b -- alabama" where you talk about the faith and race. you said, i thought the single most important message of jesus was love. but what do i know? i'm in alabama and bound for hell, as they say, but roy moore does not speak for my god. what has this race taught you about alabama and their citizens, and in some cases, their relationship with god? >> like anywhere, elements to god in many different ways. i see religious freedom in very different ways, and i think that's the most disturbing development to many of us here, is that roy moore has managed to run for office and looks to be leading in the race with the message that says he is for religious freedom when religious freedom to roy moore means freedom to worship as he does. and that's the most alarming thing from this position. >> yeah, and your family has a history of quite a religious history, i should say. >> right, but they're methodist, so as i was told by many people who read that column, they're not christian, so what am i listening to you for? >> howard, let me ask you this question. what do you think this race says about the state of the country in terms of where we are, that somebody with as many accusations against him, some in great detail, seem to be brushed aside, discredited. >> well, it speaks to the power, the riveting power and divisive force that is donald trump. the way i see the race here, the republicans are who are backing moore or are saying vote for trump, vote for the trump agenda, vote for so-and-so. if you heard in that robocall, the president says, i need that seat. he almost doesn't mention who the candidate is. >> he doesn't mention what he's going to do for alabama. >> no, it has nothing to do with alabama. he said, i need this seat. so i think it speaks to the galvanizing impact of donald trump on national politics, and if roy moore gets in, don't forget donald trump won alabama by almost 2-1, so that's going to be the reason. opposition to doug jones on abortion with those women i talked about in the evangelical churches. >> howard, real quickly, is the strategy going forward for anyone who gets accused to just say deny, deny, deny and hope for the best here? >> that's what it looks like. senator al franken is going to be out because he said i want to listen to the version and credit the version for women who accused me. and he's gone. roy moore may end up in the senate. >> there was the possibility of facing an ethics investigation in the senate. take a listen. >> would roy moore go there and testify under oath disputing these allegations? >> you know, mitch mcconnell and his crew have been threatening judge moore from the get-go. they spent $30 million down here trying to get him in the primary, then all this fake news surfaces. judge moore is going to washington, judge moore is going to win, and i highly doubt there will be a senate investigation. >> so how big a problem will roy moore be for mitch mcconnell if he wins, given the fact mitch mcconnell has already committed to him facing an ethics investigation? >> you've seen the emergence of the two sides of the gop, which has basically started since president trump was campaigning last year, where you have what they call the mainstream or the establishment republican party. then you have sort of the further right, the more conservative elements. it's going to be very interesting to see the more these nontraditional republicans come in, how they work together, whether or not they actually have a way to kind of combine forces and further the president's agenda or whether or not they basically counter each other and blow up the entire agenda. and so we'll wait and see what happens there. >> let me ask all three of you -- i'm going to start with you, john, first, since you know alabama probably better than anyone. what's your prediction for tuesday? >> you know, my head tells me roy moore is probably up five or six points, but there's something nagging in it as well that says we may just not know, because it is just this one race and it's a heightened environment. it's kind of a coin flip in my head right now. but, you know, the smart money goes to roy moore. >> vivian, you're up next. who do you got? >> traditionally, i would say because it's the state of alabama, the republican definitely has, you know, an advantage, but i learned a lesson last year which was not to predict these races, so i'm not going to guess. >> howard, you got the final word. >> i agree. especially -- i'm not going to guess, especially in a race like this where there are going to be more people lying to pollsters than in history. nobody wants to tell the truth about how they're going to vote in this race. >> guys, thank you for joining us. you can reach out to me on social media as always. be sure to join in casey hine. joe biden's chances on taking trump in 2020. next, it's "meet the press." needles. essential for vinyl, but maybe not for people with rheumatoid arthritis. because there are options. like an "unjection™". xeljanz xr. a once daily pill for adults with moderate to severe ra for whom methotrexate did not work well. xeljanz xr can reduce pain, swelling and further joint damage, even without methotrexate. xeljanz xr can lower your ability to fight infections, including tuberculosis. serious, sometimes fatal infections, lymphoma and other cancers have happened. don't start xeljanz xr if you have an infection. tears in the stomach or intestines, low blood cell counts and higher liver tests and cholesterol levels have happened. your doctor should perform blood tests before you start and while taking xeljanz xr, and monitor certain liver tests. tell your doctor if you were in a region where fungal infections are common and if you have had tb, hepatitis b or c, or are prone to infections. needles. a must for vinyl. but for you, one pill a day may provide symptom relief. ask your doctor about xeljanz xr. an "unjection™".
