after floodwaters forced them from their louisiana homes. the situation could worsen. a manhunt continues. 24 hours later who killed the leader of a new york city movk and his assistant? why? >> pointing to the broad day light murders, the community wants justice. we begin in rio de janeiro. ryan lochty confirms to nbc news that he was robbed at gunpoint along with other members of the team this morning. krisz, what do we know so far about this case? >> richard, we have the story directly from ryan lochty himself about having a gun put to himself. lochte has won 12 olympic medals. six of them gold. he was with his teammates in a cab. that's a kind of hospitality house set up by france for their team >> i was with a couple teammates. we got pulled over in our taxi. and these guys came out with a badge, a police badge. no lights, no nothing. just a police badge. they pulled us over. they pulled out their guns and told the other swimmers to get down on the ground. they got down on the ground. i refused. i was like we didn't do anything wrong. so i'm not getting down on the ground and the guy pulled out his gun, cocked it and said get down. i put my hands up. i was like whatever. he took our money, he took my wallet. >> obviously, a harrowing experience. the other three swimmers are members of relay teams. obviously, this is the most high profile robbery here, but far from the only one. the security chief here was mugged at knife point as the games were starting. two rowing coaches were robbed at knife point and just before the games got underaway paralympparalimp yans were held up. there's a lot of crime here. but there are at least 8 a,000 security officials. far more than we saw in london. armed military, they get together in groups. however, obviously they are concentrated on the tourist areas and here in olympiapark a venues. you can see from this interview, richard, lochte was not hurt. although his mom said in a separate interview he was shaken up. . gunnar tweeted, we are all safe. >> as you have been following this story, the international olympic committee was saying that the robbery report was not true. that changed. and why? >> reporter: well, all morning there were conflicting stories. the olympic committee said they got their it information from the usoc. they were saying wait, we're going to put out a statement. police said they didn't know anything about it. clearly, it would have been in the best interest of everybody involved for this it not to come out. but lochte's mom talked with a sports reporter and that's how it started. the usoc said, this happened according to four members of the u.s. olympic swimming team and that the swimmers are cooperating with authorities. there's a separate statement from the military police to nbc. that says there is an investigation underway. they plan to interview the swimmers. we don't know if that's hachd. team members have gotten security briefings in preparation for the games pap short time ago, we also heard from michael phelps who said in the field of competition and out of the field of competition, we try to stay together. we do watch out for one another and that's just something we do and we love to do. but i definitely was not there last night. i was dead asleep. >> thank you so much for that. chris jansing in rio e with the latest. taking to violence in milwaukee. then a short time ago edward flynn confirming a 23-year-old was the armed man shot and killed by police officer yesterday. the mayor confirmed the police officer involved in the shooting was wearing a body camera. here's how he described the image from that video. >> that still photo demonstrates without question that he had a gun in his hand. i want our community to know that. >> violent protests raged through a small community. that's what it looked like. the mayor urged residents to stay calm. keri sanders is there and joins me now. are officials expecting more violence tonight? >> they are certainly prepared for it. the governor has activated the national guard. . they will not be deployed to the area unless there's a problem. but there are definitely prepared for the possibility. the mayor and the police chief saying that this is unprecedented for them to make a request like this. but what they saw here last night and you can see the remains behind me is something they have never seen in it their city before. the problems here, of course, go back to an officer-involved shooting. so you had a black police officer who shot a black suspect. the suspect apparently was being observed by the police, they say n a suspicious manner. he jumped out of the car and started running. he got into a foot chase and he then, according to his body camera, turned with the weapon. the police say they have recovered a weapon and say the officer at the time department realize it was a stolen weapon and loaded with 23 rounds. officers are trained to defend the public but also to defend themselves. the officer himself is yet to give an actual statement. that's the normal procedure with the union of presentation. he will sit and talk about what happened. the biggest question is that piece of videotape. members in the community say they want to see it for themselves. there's been a lot of discussion about ideas of what happened. people passing around rumors. so far the only thing we have is the may u your's official statement. the mayor fears happening tonight. let's listen to more of tom barnett. >> we don't know what's going to happen if we have a flare up tonight like we had had last night. so if you love your son, you love your daughter, your grandchild, tell them to stay away from this area. stay away from this area. let's calm things down. >> mayor tom barrett saying he wants things to remain calm. he's concerned it may go. >> folks hoping for a quiet night. keri sanders, thank you. new york city police are still searching for a motive after the leader of a new york city mosque was murdered in broad daylight. police say he and his associate were both shot in the head by gunmen after leaving a mosque in the ozone park neighborhood in queens on saturday. followers gathered at the crime scene saying the killings were an act of hate. the men were targeted for their faith. tammy leitner is following the latest developments on this story and as we look at this, are police suspect in this. >> it's been more than 24 hours and no arrest, no motive. now we do know the shooter was caught on sur vabs surveillance video before the shooting and after the shooting. he was seen with a gun in his hand. witnesses were able to describe to police what the shooter looked like. they created a sketch. we know they left the mosque around 1:30 in had the afternoon. they were walking home together. they were approach ed from behind. both were shot in the head. the big question everybody in the community is asking is was this a hate crime. both men were wearing religious attire and one block from the mosque. earlier we spoke withhe council and the director of new york and let's listen to what she had to say. >> whether it was a hate crime, when we find the perpetrator of this crime, it will become more clear. muslims are walking down the street in sort of a defensive manner worried that the negative rhetoric by people running for office sometimes is going to come back to haunt them personally and cause more tragedies in our community. >> very concerned what is going on. police have not come out and called this a hate crime, but the community evidently believes that it is. they are concerned about the rest of the muslims in the community and that there could be further backlash sblp as you know, this it particular neighborhood so diverse and this mosque serving the muslim asian-american community in queens. as we look at this any indication in terms of what might be next. the trump campaign releasing a statement regarding the attack. it's getting a lot of headlines. >> people are upset, blaming this on trump and other events on trump because of his anti-muslim rhetoric. let's read the statement saying to blame any candidate for these murders is a highly irresponsible and politically motivated attempt to push an agenda. as president will work with law enforcement and community leaders to create an environment where tragedies never happen again. that area is a working class area in queens. a lot of immigrants in that area. a lot of immigrants that go to that mosque. so a lot of concern. >> one of those places where we would see the headline. we're not seeing that. tammy leitner with that story, appreciate it. happening now, historic flooding is being blamed for three deaths in louisiana. fishes say more than 7,000 people have been rescued from the flood waters. some towns have been completely cut off by the rising water. earlier today, governor john edwards urging people in the flood zone to take some precautions. >> i just want to let everyone know that this is a serious event. it's ongoing. it's not over. even with the sunshine out today intermittently, the waters are going to continue to rise in many areas. so this is no time to let the guard down. >> let's take you there to gabe gutierrez. how are rescue operations going? >> reporter: we're here in the eastern part of baton rouge. you see a boat in. front of the camera. this is a fluid scene. throughout the day we have seen rescue efforts here ongoing. you can see all this water. when we arrived here early this morning some time around 9:00, this was all dry, if you can believe it. now there's all this water here. good samaritans and authorities have been here rescuing people throughout the day. >> we're just out here as volunteers. >> you have been here all day. the water continues to rise. we're trying to get stranded people out of their homes. we were there a few hours ago and residents were telling us they have never seen the water rise this quickly. many didn't think it was going to happen. >> it's crazy. since we have been here this morning, it's risen at least three feet. >> good luck. >> so you can see right here this is one of the vehicles that's really stalled out. here in louisiana, it's an ongoing situation. more than 7,000 water rescues according to the governor. three people have been confirmed dead. and the state police have been taking supplies to some drivers that were also stranded along i-12. they haven been stranded there for more than a day. towns like watson, residents have been taking to social media, begging for help. the coast guard and state mrs., they have been overwhelm ed trying to keep up with this demand. you can see right in front of me all this activity. that's a gentleman from the baton rouge fire department. e even on their off duty time. good samaritans trying to supplement the authorities out here. it's an ongoing natural disaster. then the situation is the rain had had stopped earlier today. there was sun coming out. now the rain has started again as we see another vehicle coming in. >> listen, the message that many republicans want donald trump to be talking about is the economy, national security, which he will do tomorrow when he comes out th the foreign policy speech in ohio laying out how he plans to take care of isis. he's spent the morning on a tweet storm against the media. he says if the discussing in corrupt media covered me honestly and didn't put false meaning into the words i'd say, i'd be beating hillary clinton by 20%. saying it's not freedom of the press when newspapers and others are allowed to say whatever they want, this is a lot of pushback from donald trump against some of the coverage that described frankly his flailing campaign. trump in a different tweet wrote, i am who i am. in a sense, making the point impactly of these stories saying he's not going to change. trump seems to believe the strategy that worked for him in the primaries that let him win to this point will succeed in the general election. the problem is what you talked about in the beginning. those poll numbers showing that he's slipping in the states he needs to do better in and showing he's not keeping a strong enough hold on the states he has to hang on to. when you talk to operatives, even they will say he has until labor day, the first debate through september. but if the numbers we see now stick around as we make the turn into october, that's when i think you're going to see a lot of folks who haven't already hit the panic button. >> those numbers have been cascading not in his favor. hallie jackson, thank you so much for that. let's now bring in our political analyst amy holmes. amy, he's asserting here that because of the coverage of his campaign that the poll numbers, as i was just saying to hallie jackson, two weeks, all continue yulely seeing bad. not good for him. is it the media causing this to happen? >> donald trump can say that, but if you look at likely u.s. voters that among u.s. voters we surveyed, 45% say it's donald trump who is his own worst enemy. this is great meat for the base, but e he has to reach beyond the base and while bashing the media e he might have a case from moment to moment, but in terms of overall narrative and story and strategy for becoming president of the united states, he's got to move on. >> if we build on what amy is saying, then maybe blacklisting the media might help him because he will get less coverage. >> donald trump's campaign is insanity. he's becoming e completely unhinged, barely three weeks after he got the nomination. can you imagine him in the oval office president bu office, but this is silliness but where it starts to concern me is this is how fascism starts. when you take half truths and spinning them into complete lies. donald trump cannot separate fact and fiction. e he makes up stories and points the finger and blames other people. this is exactly how fascism starts. i was on yesterday and talked about how obama brought us into war in afghanistan in 2009. this is obama's war. it's not. it was george w. bush's war. obama was noter of isis. as a job of the media as well as shane's to fact check that and check that which is said. so when you see this assertion coming from the campaign that they should blacklist the media and you see mike pence saying i'm not sure. that's not what i want. but he's also breaking on other issues such as taxes saying he will release before election day. he will talk about pensacola penn. do you see trump changing his mind because his running mate is breaking with him on this? >> the list of things that mike pence has broken with donald trump on is long and they have only been a partnership for about a month. blacklisting the media is one. the iraq war of the way trump portrayed his candidacy. other sides on all kinds of things on trade, core issues. and now he's in favor of it. so i don't think mike pence disagreeing over a media blacklist or whether he releases his taxes is going to cause any change for donald trump. >> they may be drive iing the n ty as we look at the running mate say i guess don't quite agree with the principle on this ticket. so that might resinate over time. and i'm going to go to the polls a little more. it's been two weeks now that i have been following these new polls in swing states that don't look so swingy and mark murray said these are some of the reasons why. there's an education gap, for instance. whites with college degree. now going for hillary clinton now in bigger numbers than have been seen before the urban versus rural gap. he really lays it out here. are we seeing a break here even though we're before that labor day line in the sand we have talked about before? >> it's becoming a huge problem because polling shows whoever is ahead at the beginning of september will win the white house. what's happening is donald trump is losing support among conservative leaning independents. we have state he is must win. colorado, virginia, where hillary clinton has double digit leads. you're seeing states democrats haven't carried in decades in play. you're seeing states in like north carolina, clinton has a double-digit lead where the democrat for governor and senator are pulling ahead. we could win the senate and presidency. >> last word here. another one of his takeaways, women growing in numbers going for clinton. >> narrowing and that is not good news for him. he needed that huge advantage among male voters because hillary clinton has such a large advantage among women voters. we are far out from election day in november. donald trump has the debate coming up september 26th where maybe he can start to turn this around. i don't believe the labor day thing. if we know anything about election day, it's been full of surprises and unpredictable moments. >> shane, your reaction to this? (girls sing) safelite repair, safelite replace. welcome back. a short time ago milwaukee mayor tom barrett announced the police officer involved in the shooting was wearing a body camera. the mayor says a still image take frn that video confirms the deceased suspect was armed. after a night o of violent protests, the mayor urged residents to stay calm. today community members held a prayer service near where the incidents took place. the u.s. olympic committee confirming ryan lochte and three teammates were robbed at gunpoint earlier this morning. all four safe and cooperating with authorities. and baton rouge, louisiana, people had to be evacuated after nearly seven feet of flood water flowed into the building. the headquarters was being used as a temporary shelter. at this hour, over 5,000 people are living in shelters while 7,000 had to be rescued from their homes, cars and other structures. gabe gutierrez joins us again from baton rouge. as we think about the areas residents have to stay overnight, there's concern about clean and safe water. >> yeah, certainly. that's always a concern in these type of flood waters, but residents in this area say this level of flooding in louisiana is unprecedented. you can see it's still an active scene, when we spoke to you a half hour ago, we saw several residents come in. now we're able to show you live pictures from a drone over this area. this is an area that just a few hours ago really when we showed up here this morning it was dry. the street i'm standing on was dry. rivers here had been rising and some of them are expected to crest later on today. others in louisiana won't crest until early this week. so that is causing a major problem for residents in this area. now here, again, live pictures from the drone. you can see some of the people around here, the good samaritans that have been around here helping people throughout the day. i understand you're one of the people that have been here throughout the day. what have you seen out there? >> it's unbelievable. i have never seen anything like it. not even on tv. >> reporter: why are you out here? are you a baton rouge resident? >> i'm trying to help. the worst thing about this whole day is that nobody can communicate. there's no communication. >> reporter: the cell towers have been down. >> every at&t phone has no communication. >> we were out there in that neighborhood and what residents said is some evacuated from places like denim springs and came here thinking, listen, i'm going to be dry. then the rain came overnight and the water kept rising. how frustrating that is been for residents that you have been able to rescue? >> i think to not call it a hate crime is irresponsible. the nypd had investigators on the scene, which we applaud. now we just have to catch the person who perpetrated this crime. the community is devastated. but there is a rumor that a suspect has been caught. but we want to find out if this is a hate crime or not. the rhetoric kind of supports things like that, but we're not going to conclude that. >> we can't con if you remember that individual that you're alluding to there. tell us about what you know about the mosque, about this community, about howdy verse it is. >> the community is the fastest growing community in new york city. it's the fastest growing muslim community as well. they congregate and build religious institutions about the communities where they end up. it's on the brooklyn borders. so you'll see them walking down the street clearly being musl muslims. >> you see that every day. >> absolutely. this person targeted them from the rear. he had $1,000 in his pocket that wasn't taken. so we don't think it was a robbery. >> did you know them personally? there are so many numbers to watch that come out within the last several days. what are you watching? >> the first thing i understand is this is not a swing state issue rugt now. donald trump is significantly behind on the national level and focused on any single swing state isn't going to make much difference. he needs to increase and improve his numbers across the board. seven of the key swing states he's an average of 30% favorability. you don't win national elections at 30%. this is a a referendum on donald trump. he needs to turn the focus to hillary clinton. >> when you do that, neil, because if you turn the focus on hillary clinton for a second, let's do that in georgia. some of the red states that you probably would have said they are preswing until 2020 or 2024. one of those polls had clinton up 4 points this week. the new poll has trump up by 5 on the flip side. we know clinton is also making some play in utah as well. what is secretary clinton do you think doing right to bring these preswing states into the swing category. >> it's actually very simple what she's doing right. she's running against donald trump. and these two candidates are the best thing that could happen to each other. hillary clinton, based on her numbers right now, the only candidate she has a reasonable chance is donald trump. so you look at the state where is trump has a hold. he's got to hold georgia, arizona and north carolina. three difficult u states. he has to either win utah or iowa. i never dreamed i'd be saying to win utah. and then if all that happens, he has to sweep florida, pennsylvania and ohio. that's a very narrow path to 270 electoral votes. >> let's go down ballot as we watch the house and senate. it looks almost impossible for the house to swing to blue, but when we do look at the senate, some of the recent polling coming out shows that for those that are toss up when we look at north carolina, pennsylvania, that down ballot effect means those two seats could go blue. >> yeah. in pennsylvania, in north carolina, in new hampshire, the three republican campaigns are running strong campaigns, but there is right now a little bit of a drag from the top of the ticket. the anomaly there is ohio, where rob portman still maintaining a significant lead over ted strickland. what happens, though, truthfully, you don't usually see that kind of -- that slippage until closer to the election, until really two or three weeks out from the election when you see the impact of the top of the ticket. i think voters are going to wait until after the first debate and then that's going to settle things for a lot of voters and they're going to pick their sides and go from there. >> all right, good stuff. thank you so much. i wish we could talk longer. that was a great drilldown. appreciate it. next we go live to rio, where simone biles is competing today in women's gymnastics and justin gatlin amz fims for the title, fastest man in the world. it's the phillips' lady! anyone ever have occasional constipation, diarrhea, gas or bloating?
