would not be able to treat you fairly because of that policy? >> yes, it is possible, thoroughly. >> and objections, upsetting lead gz republicans who are finally -- >> look, i don't condone any comments, we can press on other topics. >> would you consider it is racism? >> was that not a racist statement? >> i could not disagree more of what he had to say. >> good day everyone, i am andrea mitchell. the democratic nomination for the presidency with hillary clinton. sanders is not backing down. clinton is turning her attention to the general election where donald trump is giving her plenty to work with, even a reported contender. n newt gingrich found trump's comment is too much to beare. >> this is a mistake he makes. first of all, this judge is born in indiana. >> this would have been thrown out. as far as this is concerned, elves surprised at newt and thought it was inappropriate of what he said. >> joining me now is nbc's katy tur and casey cold front and nbc's kris jansing. katy, first to you, both campaigns focused on donald trump of what he said about judge curiel and what he said about a muslim judge, how far is he willing to take about this criticism and what have you been learning about of what people are now saying? >> reporter: it is many of his republican supporters we saw over the weekend. mitch mcconnell coming out again with comments and newt gingrich came out and distanced himself as you just heard. today, we are hearing reactions and congressmen on whether or not they agree with these comments or come to talk to us about how they feel about it. so far, we are not getting answers or quite a few noes. senator kirk declined. we are waiting responses for a few others. we had a statement from susan colins, donald trump's comments on the ethnic heritage and religion of judges are absolutely unacceptable and his statement of judge curiel could not rule fairly because of his mexican heritage. she said in the past that she's waiting and see and she will likely support the republican nominee. we'll have to wait and see whether or not she will support donald trump. in terms of how the donald trump campaign is reacting and private discussions, aids telling me they are pulling their hair out. i am hearing this with people close to the campaign and outside the campaign and donors as well. >> they don't understand he's going after judge curiel in this way and bringing up mexican heritage and accused of many being out rightly racist over these comments especially adding muslims into it. so this is an extraordinary bad news cycle for donald trump campaign. they are flying in the face and refused to back down. donald trump saying his campaign is being run well and not any decent in the campaign despite of what i have been hearing and other reporters have been hearing. >> kelly o' donnel here in california, you have been covering the democrats. as we have seen some of these members of congress out of the senate twisting themselves. susan colins is the most straightforward of it all saying it is unacceptable. to me, the lady from maine may not be endorsing. >> susan colins appreciates this sort of independent thinking. she has a long history of doing that. when you see mcconnell, remembering that however he want to condemn or criticize the remark, he's thinking of democratic -- and if the word racist coming out with respect to donald trump. that would hurt the republican senators he wants to see reelected or winning elections in order to protect the republican majority. they are twisting themselves to appear to be condemning what he says or trying to give trump guidance to move off of but also trying not to do additional harms in a practical way to not be a big narrative to the big general election. >> briefly, senator john mccain who was standing up in defense of barack obama against donald trump's further criticisms. now, it is stuck in really the grace of his life in arizona where the hispanic americans are just -- fired up. >> absolutely. >> and, mccain running in a year when we know outsiders and he's certainly not an outsider. a real challenge for mccain. they are aware of it in his campaign. he's actively fighting against it. and also having been the nominee himself hard to go against the current nominee. it is really a difficult sort of navigation for mccain. we'll see how it affects. >> a lot easier for mit romney. >> kasie hunt, you were out in the campaign trail, he was all over california and you caught up on with him. we want to play a little bit about that and ask you about bill clinton's campaigning. >> what does this remind you of, of your time of your political career. >> the contentious of it and when i ran in '92, i was smashed by republicans for years. >> on sunday, he kind of went off message. >> the one thing i would say is they have been careful to build under the radar as not necessarily the former president but somebody who could stand on the smaller stage because we saw what happened to 2008 where he did trail his message in 2008 and hurting his wife. we cannot see just under the surface that sort of inclination and understanding that heckling moment hey, i would be screaming to if i knew my guy is going to be toast come tuesday. that's the kind of thing they don't want him to say. we are looking at five months of attacks from donald trump on bill clinton, everything of bill clinton personal and private life. you name it. it is going to be a fair game. that's a long time to to stair down and resist that impulse. >> they may want him to be in the rule communities each front and center. one thing he's doing that is interesting is gathering intelligence. he's applying those key instance. he's done more than 400 stops for her in 40 states over the course of the last four months. you almost never know. >> exactly. >> kris jansing had been with bernie sanders. sanders even on sunday came out slugging against hillary clinton and against the clinton foundation and money and opening up the whole line of attack. there is no sign on the eve of this big primary in california and of her clinton being only 19 votes shy of nailing the nomination and no sign at all that he's ready to conceive for back out. >> you hit on the most important point. yesterday, we heard a lot of attacks from bernie sanders that we never heard before. he went after clinton's foundation and it was a conflict of interest for them and places like saudi arabia that he called out by names. this is not something we heard before. if someone is looking for signs in this final push in california, well, depending on what happens tomorrow night, maybe i will take a step back listening to bill clinton and listening to people like harry reid and diane feinstein, it is all but over and it is time for you to get out. we are not getting any indication of that. there is been a lot of questions over the last 24 or 48 hours of big articles written about whether or not hay did everything they could in this campaign. when i talk to people on that, they said look, we are focused of what we have to do between now and the convention that we are not looking at that. this is the guy that's going through the numbers quickly and he's done 34 rallies in 21 days and he's been here straight in california and gotten in front of 217,000 people who are shouting bernie, bernie, bernie and a big rally with dave mathew and san francisco does not sound like somebody in the head space to drop out >> indeed. thank you very much, chris jansing and katy tur and kasie hunt and kelly o' donnel. thanks very much for being with us and all of you today as we look forward to the voting. by the way, the counting of the votes because there is so many early and mail in votes could in fact take another day to count up california. make sure to tune in first to rachel maddow tonight and hillary clinton is rachel's special >> it would be a huge development and positive in terms of bringing the party together. he's a unique position having gone through the primary years ago and demonstrated how he and secretary clinton forged this unlikely alliance and successful alliance so i think he can play a pivotal role of unifying the party. >> tomorrow is june 7th, 2008 was the day that hillary clinton con seeded and said that there were cracks in the ceiling. for this day for her if she only had 19 delegates left. bernie sanders is making the case and he made the argument against the super delegates and now he is saying he can convert the delegates. what are you hearing from your congressional colleague? is she reaching out to them. we have not heard if any have switched over. clinton will have more votes as she will have higher percentage of the pledge delegates. it is hard to make the argument that the candidates came in those categories. i think it is a tough case to make. >> yes, recently as yesterday he was opening up a whole new line of attack saying that the clinton foundation was taken money from contributors and an argument that donald trump could have made. >> we don't want to see senator sanders really assist and help donald trump. we want to bring the party together and we want to make sure that donald trump never sets foot in the oval office. if we divide it. it is dangerous. you will see the secretary after tomorrow or whatever the results is reaching out to senator sanders and that branch we hope is reciprocated. the last thing that senator wants is to somehow be seen as enabling donald trump to take the presidency. >> won't he have an argument of i won the biggest state and the most diverse state and why should he go onto philadelphia and have a contested convention as he said this weekend he will. >> well, there is certainly possibility of the candidates could split the race. it will be a close race. none the less, he's well behind the delegates and millions of votes behind and while i am sure he would like to win california, it does not change the under line math and it is a hard argument for him to make at this point but particularly early in the campaign he was saying super delegates should not play a decisive role, they should play the same way as the delegates. to reverse that now is a very tough sell. >> i have to ask you as a lawyer, and someone in the legislative branch. what do you think of powers in what donald trump has done in suggesting his attitude towards this judge, towards any judge who maybe a muslim or other ethnici ethnicity, having been able to rule impartially on a case? >> it shows that a lack of understanding of coequal and even bigotry it is plain racism and as simple as that to attack the man's heritage and the origin is awful. it demonstrates he's unsuited for presidency and unfit to hold any office in the land. >> thank you for being with us here. >> continuing the fight. laila's on her father's legacy. that's right here on "andrea mitchell reports" on msnbc. >> it is important to understand of the cultivate and the quality and there is only one way to cultivate the quality is to become more self less and selfish. real is touching a ray. amazing is moving like one. real is making new friends. amazing is getting this close. real ian animal rescue. amazinis over twenty-seven thousand of them. there is only one place ere real a amazing live. seaworld. real. aming ♪ everything your family touches sticks with them. make sure the germs they bring home don't stick around. usorox disinfectin products. because no one kills germs betterhan clor. ll that's why i dug this out for youer. it's yougrdpappy's hammer and he wou have wanted you to have it. yes, ge makes powerful machines.him... but i'll be writing the code that will allow those machines to share information with each other. i'll be changing the way the world works.
