The serious bipartisan negotiations that have been going on for months now to resolve our unfinished business, military spending, disaster relief, health care, immigration , and Border Security will continue. It would be my intention to resolve these issues as quickly as possible so that we can move on to other business thats important to our country. However, should these issues not be resolved by the time the funding bill before us expires on february 8, 2018, assuming that the government remains open, it would be my intention to proceed to legislation that would address daca, Border Security, and should. So i will add my vote for this this agreement as the majority leader has simply outlined, that we have a c. R. That runs through february 8, we seek to have an agreement on immigration before that time, as well as the other outstanding issues, but if an agreement has not been reached by february 8, that we move to immigration, and that the senate deals with it as the senate should, without relying on the white house or other bodies, other chambers to dictate what essentially the senate floor would take a step before february 8th. Yes. The problem is if you finish the immigration bill before february 8th, then will we have to deal with the next shutdown february he 8th. Right. That kicks the bill off the senate calendar. And you can only bring it back so there are the yeah. We want to start and finish the immigration bill. That will give us time. What does that mean for schumer is going to talk to members of his caucus. Is it your sense that he will be receptive to this . I think some will. Some will remain reluctant. The weekend has been jammed with negotiations and failed attempts to bridge a gap. Mulvaney accused schumer of not agreeing to the border wall funding. And schumer said mulvaney was out of the loop. He had the gall to look at the president and say im giving you everything asked for the wall and when pressed admitted he wasnt doing it. That is the type of negotiation he is engaging in with the president. He will have to up his game and be a little more hon heest with the president of the United States. You offered 1. 6 billion in funding. He was not in the room. He does not know the truth. Of. How much did you offer the president . Im not giving you a number. He put a number on the table, and we took it. It is appropriating the the money. Thats the difference. No one has pressed mr. Schumer on. He wants to authorize it but doesnt want to spend the money to get it built. The president demanded for months that a deal on daca include the wall. Because the president campaigned on the wall, even though he said it be paid for by mexico, and demands the wall for the sake of compromise. For the sake of coming together. I offered it. Despite what some people are saying on tv, and mind you these are folks not in the room during discussion, that is exactly what happened. The president picked a number for the wall. I accepted it. It wasnt my number. It wasnt the number in the bills here. He he picked it. Now, it would be hard to imagine such a more reasonable compromise. All along the president saying ill do daca and d. R. E. A. M. Ers in return for the wall. Hes got it. Cant take yes for an answer. Thats why were here. We are hearing all of this sound how divisive washington has been this entire weekend. Its hard to see what the point of all the drama and the disruption. And we are so deep in the senate weeds right now, it is hard to see what the point of all of that was. So it does appear that at noon they may cobble together the 60 votes to move forward, reopen the government after two and a half days. Its unclear what the future may hold and whether or not we will go through this exercise again in a few weeks. Let me pick up on the last point you were talking about. Even if a deal is reached to reopen the government later today or tomorrow, where does the actual debate on immigration policy stand . Has there been a softening on either side. Have you seen a willingness that may point to immigration policy which really started this Government Shutdown on daca and immigration and the border wall. First of all, democrats did not vote to fund the the government because they insisted the advocates for immigrants and those undocumented here in the United States including the socalled d. R. E. A. M. Ers, who were brought here by unvol is tailor by their parents and have lived here for years to allow them to stay, to continue president obamas program that would allow them to stay.
