is it a position she's taking to ward off challengers or is it truly her philosophy? is her lean to the left to get her through the primaries or a set of principles she'll defend to november? according to the new york times, mrs. clinton's aids say it's the only way to win in heightened polarization when voters is truly up for grabs and her liberal policy position they say will fire up democrats, a less difficult test than trying to win over independence in more hostile territory, even though a broader strategy could help lift the party with her. well, secretary clinton backed a constitutional right for same-sex marriage. she's tweeted back in april coat every loving couple and finally deserves to be recognized and treated equally under the law across our nation. she's spoken about issues of race and criminal justice. here she is. >> from ferguson to staten island to baltimore, the patterns have become unmistakable and undeniable. there is something profoundly wrong when african american men are still far more likely to be stopped and searched by police, charged with crimes and sentenced to longer prison terms than their white counter parts. >> last week she took up voting rights to make it harder to vote. here she is. >> today republicans are systematically and deliberately trying to stop millions of american si sevens from voting. what part of democracy are they afraid of? >> well, here she is talking about immigration and go further than president obama from deportations. >> i will fight for comprehensive immigration reform and a path to citizenship, congress continues to refuse to act as president, i would do everything possible under the law to go even further. there are more people like many parents of dreamers and others with deep ties and contributions to our communities who deserve a chance to stay. >> she's also spoken about paid leave and issues of pay equity for women. here she is on that. >> it is outrageous that america is the only country in the developed world that doesn't guarantee paid leave to mothers of newborns. [ applause ] >> it is also hard to believe that so many women are still paid less than men for the same work with even wider gaps for women of color. >> i'm joined by ""huffington post"" and msnbc politicalest and all of you, this to me is a profound statement in the campaign. if you look at issues on blacks and how treated by police, she could be al sharpton ask just as tough, immigration fighting for the rights of hispanics and voting rights sounds like me. she's really hitting the hard point. not much room to her left if you're bernie sanders, where do you go? >> i don't think there is, either. what she's doing is a primary seasoned strategy and a general election season strategy. you can learn about her by comparing her to husband. bill clinton got on a bus of the democratic convention in new york and worked the seam of white middle class voters along ohio, pennsylvania, west virginia and going for democrats white swing voters, well, in 25 years, the demographics have changed. the electric and democratic party -- >> talking about women, hispanics, a new demographic america. she's going to also have have to the address them on the tough economic issues which are a little less low hanging fruit than what you put? >> have to make a decision about the hot issues. it seems to me howard laid it out because that diagonal that goes down through appalachia, white people have been in the mountains for years and americans to the roots all the way back. the hardest folk to catch and never caught them and sounds like joe should be mad because that's his crowd she is on. >> coming back to the democratic party. >> she made a decision to go to the big cities, the great lake states. >> i mean, the campaign would say they are going to fight for every vote in every state and so forth and clearly, they would love to win ohio among the states along that seam at the very least, they would love to win as many as they can, but howard is right, they will slice and dice the rest of the electric and try to target both with positioning on some of these issues and on turnout on motivation. >> it's the bush strike that strategy of work the base, right? >> bush meets barack obama there is technology at work that wasn't available to george bush and a whole kind of motivation of getting people to come out and vote again. >> joe of west virginia said the plan was a recipe, catch this, for the status quo in washington to continue. he told "the new york times" that's not good for the country. if they go too far over there, it's going to be more difficult to govern than it truly is. he will join us tomorrow and wrote quote, the 2016 campaign can't be merely about winning but win income a way that makes the successful candidate successful president. until a bold new leader breaks the sickle of negative partisanship support for the two major party wills continue to bleed away, lesser of two evils, voters will dominate a sad electric and more americans will check out of the system all together. as i said, ron will be on. perry, seems like she made a decision, it will be announced this saturday, we're going to get the democratic base out, we'll get the northeast, we'll get the industrial midwest, the hurting, what do you call it, the rust belt. we'll work and give up in the south and give up on the boarder states basically and give up on the prairie states, give up on the rocky mountains and work our base. >> of course she's doing this. two things to note here. her president was so, her husband was so unifying he was impeached. think about 2014 where you saw clintons went over and over and over again to arkansas and kentucky. democrats are not voting in kentucky and arkansas in high numbers, hilary is doing the only -- >> okay. the time. now that you're really going here, i like this, train is moving here. if hilary is right to go to the left and work her base and get the electoral votes that way, what does that do to carry the congress again because according to the times in their lead about the two paragraphs down, they said this is not a broad strategy. take this, a broad strategy to grab the house. they might squeak the senate back but no 218 in the house, therefore no legislation, no tax changes, physical changes, policy changes, what kind of presidency is that? >> part of it depends on whether she's got some coat tails able to bring democrats -- >> this strategy be coat tails? >> it doesn't appear -- >> it might knock off kirk in illinois. >> right, on the face of it, it doesn't appear to have a lot of coat tails and you saw what happened in the mid terms, right, despite the best effort of other -- >> i wouldn't blame them. >> no, perry is right, she did campaign in a lot of places where it looked like a lost cause and was, she's likely by pursuing a fair amount of the obama strategy to have a version of the obama problem -- >> sure. >> can i say a couple things, first of all, the republicans right now don't sound to me like they are speaking to the whole country. they have tremendous demographic problems, why isn't somebody saying well if they want to govern the country, why aren't they reaching out more to minorities? why aren't they reaching out more on women's issues? why aren't they expanding the demographic base. part of the problem is the republican party is in danger of becoming a white people's party. let's be blunt about it and key republican strategists understand that and almost in the middle of the night trying to figure out how to he out of that. that's the republican's party. >> somebody must be right. both parties giving up -- >> yes, they are. that's exactly right. that's why turnout is down and the house is so hopelessly jerry bandered, you can't move the house one way or another. you just can't. it's not hilary's responsibility. >> to an extent, a lot of this is based on they don't think, neater party thinks there is center left. >> let me tell you, i'll let you finish but i've been talking to people and make one prediction, hilary is a favorite but i predict it will be another midnight. close and won't get results until maybe after midnight. the country is like this, just like that 50/50 so maybe that was hilary's calculations or people said let's live with the world we live in and fight with the army we got. >> two kinds of swing voters, one people who are democrats or republicans and people do that don't vote and maybe suedeed to vote if hilary campaigns. there is a way to turn minority women. >> you may want to take a bite as a completely straight reporter. is the it the right assessment to bring out the base, go left, don't try running to the center. is that smart based on the numbers you look at? >> by the numbers. >> perry. >> of course. >> is it smart to go to the center? >> if she takes on the more difficult issues from the left, namely, going after big banks and showing she has the guts to go after that part of the coalition and past. >> her money. >> her husband did it a generation ago from going to the right and she has the to have the guts to do it from the left. >> takes more guts to go after wall street. >> exactly. >> thank you, guys. you are smart. i think i might agree with you, we'll see. it matters. i think we're talking about last really matters, we'll talk about this a year from now. thank you. coming up, former house speaker dennis will be in court tomorrow for his arraignment. this is coming at him. he's got a new lawyer and tonight there are questions whether he set up his retirement to yield big money payouts immediately so he could make those payments to conceal his past misconduct. it's all coming together. plus, standing up to the war hawks, we'll meet a father that lost his son in afghanistan and taking on tom cotton, one of the senate's biggest hawks about the never ending push for war in the middle east. by the way, i called tom cotton baits motel. figure it out. two months away from the debate. republicans revving engines and the guy i predicted to be the front runner is going to be scott walker. finally, let me finish with the close relationship we saw in the little church on saturday. this is "hardball" the place for politics, . you know, in any job any profession image matters. i want some gray...but not too much. only touch of gray uses oxygen to gently blend away some gray but not all for that perfect salt and pepper look. satisfaction guaranteed. just you and the look you want. just for men touch of gray how do you get to the top of your game?
