A senior white house official told nbc news yesterday, quote, i doubt there will be any redactions. Republicans say the memo shows the fbi relied on an Opposition Research dossier funded by the democrats to surveil trump ve adviser carter page who the Trump Campaign ultimately embraced and then distance themselves from. Democrats say it distorts classified materials to undermine bob muellers problem into russian involvement in the 2016 election. The president has three options for getting the memo out there. The first is to simply declassify it and release it. The second, declassify it and send it to the house for release and the third is to not declassify, but tell the house they wont object if they do. House speaking paul ryan yesterday said he does not view the memo having a broad impact. Let me tell you what this memo is and what this memo is not. What this memo is congress doing its job in congress doing its job in conducting legitimate oversight over a unique law fisa. Fisa involves American Civil Liberties. If American Civil Liberties he were abused, then that needs to come to light so that that doesnt happen again. What this is not is an indictment on our institutions, of our justice systems. This the memo is not an indictment of the fbi, of the department of justice. It does not impugn the Mueller Investigation or the Deputy Attorney general. People should not be drawing lines or implicating independent issues. This does not implicate the Mueller Investigation. This does not implicate the this is about us holding the system accountable. So you heard that from paul ryan. But theres reporting from the Washington Post and axias of concern within the Trump Administration that the memo is not as compelling as some Congressional Republicans have made it out to be. Take a lisp ten to this. Showing misconduct on the part of people at the top of the doj and fbi. Youll see a need for a change for certain practices up there. There will be a need for a change of certain personnel towards the top. Meanwhile, john thune of south dakota said the memo should be shared with the Senate Intel Committee chair richard burr before its release. Burr has been blocked from reading it. Jeff flake wrote that the memo, quote, undermines u. S. Intelligence gathering efforts. Just yesterday, theres been speculation that gates might be seeking to cooperate with mueller. Both the special counsel and gates attorney declined comment on that one. In a special filing yesterday, attorneys for Michael Flynn say theyre not ready for the National Security adviser to be sentenced because of the current status of the investigation. Sentencing hearings are commonly delayed until the government believes a person has fully cooperated. And President Trump spoke at the gop retreat in white sulfur springs, west virginia, yesterday where he touted his view of the state of the Republican Party. What are you hearing and what do you think is going to be the impact here . Theres two buckets of potential impacts from the memo being released, which i think were all expecting to happen sometime today barring a change. But really, what with is it going to do for the relationship between the intelligence committees and the fbi and the white house . Particularly because and you said the this in the lead into this segment that richard bur, the chairman of the Senate Intelligence committee as best as we know has not had an opportunity to review in this memo. The Senate Committee which has been doing this investigation into Russian Election meddling that seems way more bipartisan than anything going on in the house or anywhere else. The fact that theyre not involved in this memos release, as best as we can tell, is maybe the most disturbing sign of all. And it seems as youre saying theres a major split amongst peoples views of whether or not this memo can be released at all, a lot of senate republicans, they seem to be die verging from their house colleagues on whether the memo should be released as youre talking about. Were seeing a difference on immigration and raising the debt ceiling, as well. You heard from the president that the republicans have not been more united than they are now. But from what were seeing, are we seeing a divide within the Republican Party . Theres this unity that we had on tax reform doesnt seem to be necessarily carrying over. And i think the next test, as youre saying, is coming into next week. Theres another government funding bill thats going to need to pass by thursday otherwise we have a Government Shutdown on our hands again. And the question is whether or not youre going to get any sort of agreement on this immigration matter which the president says you should not be calling it the dreamer issue now, whether or not that issue is going to have any resolution at all before february 8th which doesnt look likely. Then in that case, do the republicans in the house and senate come together to come away with a bill that will avoid a shutdown . Right. While the security review of the memo is only a few days old, new reporting says President Trump has been fighting to make it public for at least two weeks. House Freedom Caucus chair says he and congressman jim jordan brought his attention on january 18th during a call about the Government Shutdown. A president ial adviser tells the post, quote, there was never any hesitation. The president was resolved on this. He was not go to be persuaded. He wanted it out saying people familiar with his discussions, trump told aides and confidants he believes the memo would vindicate his claim early last year about the russia investigation that was being overseen by bob mueller which was, what he says, a witchhunt. The president says he thought the release of the memo would help with build a public argument against Rod Rosensteins handling of the case and suggested the memo might give him the justification to fire rosenstein or make other changes at the Justice Department which he complained was not sufficiently loyal to him. And the top two democrats in congress are calling on House Speaker paul ryan to remove congressman devin nunes as house Intel Committee chair, Chuck Schumer and nancy pelosi both sent letters to ryan yesterday. The threat from russia to our democracy is now far less than the threat from within. And tragically, that is, i think, so plainly the case. There is nothing russia can do to us the that rivals what we are doing to ourselves right now. As the russia Investigation Continues to heat up, an overwhelming majority of americans say trump should talk to special Counsel Robert Mueller under oath. In a new poll, 71 of americans say trump should agree to be interviewed by mueller about the russia probe. 22 said he should not. 51 of republicans, 74 of independents and 85 of democrats are among those who say trump should agree to sit down with the special counsel. And 8 in 10 americans say if trump does speak with mueller, he should do so under oath. That includes 67 of republicans, 85 of independents and 93 of democrats. Amid the ongoing bashing of republicans, james comey is speaking out. He took to twitter yesterday writing all should appreciate the fbi speaking up. I wish more of our leaders would. We expect the Senate Intelligence committee is going to come up with some sort of report, at least, on steps that should be taken before 2018, the midterms are coming up in november. But the timeline for that is not entirely clear. And the more time that is spent talking about the scope of thing investigation, about things like this memo with the thought about what russia has done or is trying to do going forward. Of course, we havent had them as best we know actually manage to manipulate Election Results yet, but that may be the next thing they try. Yeah. Lets switch gears here and talk about Immigration Reform. We have this march deadline approaching with daca. You hear from the president that they want to get daca figured out, they want to get Immigration Reform figured out. But we also know with daca comes the attachment to the border wall funding, which a lot of democrats obviously are not on board with. Do you think were going to see a fix on this . Well, the fix that seems to be available is a fairley narrow one in which he gets some Border Security money. President trump can call it a wall if he wants to. And you get the daca situation resolved, the legal status, the Young Children who came here without legal status, that all gets resolved. But if the continues insistence, what i hear from the senate is if you get this continued insistence on these other provisions, on this socalled chain migration matter which basically most republicans did not stand and applaud in the senate during the state of the Union Address the other day, the more you get that, the more unlikely it gets that we get a deal by march.
